    Plants and Food

There is a vast variety among living forms found on earth. All living beings are classified as

belonging to one of the two kingdoms: the plant Kingdom or the animal kingdom.

Most plants have a green substance in their leaves, known as chlorophyll, which gives them their

colour. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and helps plants prepare food from carbon dioxide and

water. This process is known as photosynthesis.

Animals depend on plants for their food, as they cannot manufacture their own food.

A food chain is defined as a series of living beings each dependent on the next as a source of

food. A food chain always starts with the producer, the living being that produces food. This is

usually a green plant. All the other beings in a food chain are called consumers, that is, an animal

that eats a plant or another animal.

Humans depend largely on plants for their food requirements. Many people eat meat as well,

which is a good source of proteins.

In the simple food chain, the grass is the producer and the sheep and the man are the consumers.

    Example: Grass ----------->Sheep------------> Man

    GLOBES

Planet earth is round in shape like a ball. To study the earth, we need a proper map. The most

accurate model of the earth is a globe, which is a spherical structure. The globe gives us a true

representation of different places located on the earth.

A globe shows the earth's five oceans and seven continents. A globe also shows how the earth

rotates on an imaginary centre line called an axis. At the ends of this line are the North and South

Poles. These poles help us find directions on the earth.

An imaginary line shown on a globe is called the equator. This is a horizontal line that runs

around the centre of the earth and divides it into two halves called hemispheres. It is exactly

halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. The northern half is called the northern

hemisphere and the southern half is called the southern hemisphere.

Another imaginary line divides the earth into the eastern and western hemispheres. This line is

called the prime meridian. This line runs from the North Pole to the South Pole.
