November 24, 2018 I am delighted to know that The National Academy of Sciences, India, the first Science Academy of our country, is holding its 88th Annual Session and the Symposium on ‘Science, Technology and Ecosystem for Sustainable Rural Development’ during December 6-8, 2018 at M. G. Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Satna, M. P. in collaboration with the DRI, Chitrakoot – a great endeavor.
Rural areas are still plagued by manifold problems. Poverty reduction and
economic growth can be sustained only if natural resources are managed on a
sustainable basis. Greening rural areas can stimulate economies, create jobs
and help maintain the critical ecosystem services and strengthen climate
resilience of the rural poor. Therefore, breaking the vicious cycle of poverty-
environment trap and integrating poverty alleviation with ecological
restoration has been a major concern of NASI in contributing towards rural
development.
Science and society programmes of NASI have generated scientific temper and
have been working towards addressing many societal issues. Therefore,
organizing the present symposium in Chitrakoot and focusing on harnessing
the ecosystem of rural resources seems to be a benevolent step towards
development of the Rural India in general and the Sustainable Agriculture, in
particular.
As the academy is celebrating 125th Anniversary of Prof. Meghnad Saha
(Founder President of NASI) and also 150th Anniversary of Bapu and BA in the
year 2018, trying to inculcate the message of both of them to harness science
and technology for the benefit of the poor.
The technical sessions on the important issues will give a fillip towards
scientific and technological interventions in the areas such as nutrition,
agriculture, food security, health and sanitation as well as entrepreneurship
development. We will be delighted to have a large number of young scientists
attend this session. They are always the hallmark of any societal development
programmes – future of India.
I extend my warm greetings to the organizers and wish the event to be a
grand success.

I am delighted that the 88th Annual Session and the Symposium of the
National Academy of Sciences, India, (NASI), the first Science Academy of our
country, is being held at M. G. Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Satna, M. P.,
in collaboration with the DRI, Chitrakoot, during December 6-8, 2018. The theme of
the Symposium, ‘Science, Technology and Ecosystem for Sustainable Rural
Development’ is not only relevant to the local region but also very important to
balanced development of the country as a whole.
The larger segment of India’s population still resides in villages, a situation
that is likely to persist for quite some time, despite the rapid urbanization that is
taking place. In spite of rapid economic development that we are witnessing, the
disparities in the country seem to be growing rather that getting bridged. The
average per capita rural income is around half of corresponding figure for urban
population. The key to addressing this challenge in a sustainable way, according to
me, lies in capacity building of rural people to leverage knowledge, particularly
related to science and technology.
In the knowledge era that we are fast embracing, there are new
opportunities to reduce disparities, since the knowledge technologies are very
supportive of decentralization and democratization and so access to urban
opportunities is also possible in rural areas in addition to opportunities that
already exist. It is in this context, that holding of this symposium at Chitrakoot is
very important. To me, this is a win-win situation for NASI as well as the host
institutions, since there is so much to learn from each other and reshape our
approaches to the balanced development of our country.
This year is the 125th birth anniversary year of our founder Prof. Meghanad
Saha. ‘Science and Society’ has been a major thrust of NASI activities right since the
days of our founder. As mentioned above, we now have new opportunities in the
knowledge era that we are currently in. This year also happens to be 150th birth
anniversary of the father of our nation ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. Holistic village
development has been at the core of his vision on India’s development. Women
empowerment particularly in the context of science has been a key activity that
NASI is pursuing as a part of its ‘Science and Society’ programs. That this year is
also the 125th birth anniversary year of Kasturba Gandhi, ‘Ba’ as we fondly call her,
adds a further dimension to this year’s annual meeting and Symposium. As the
entire country commemorates Ba-Bapu 150thyear, we are very gratified that this
annual event is also dedicated to the respectful memories of Ba and Bapu.
I sincerely hope that the Session and Symposium will be of immense value
and benefit to the researchers as well as the participants in motivating the young
minds to take new strides for rural development, leveraging the modern and
traditional knowledge base, scientific tamper that our constitution strongly
emphasizes and human development efforts duly strengthened by technology and
human empathy.

The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) - A Brief Profile
The idea of establishing a forum for Indian scientists, which would help them in publishing their
researches and bringing them on one platform to discuss and find scientific solutions to the
problems of the country, was mooted by Prof. Meghnad Saha, a great scientist, visionary and
the then Professor of Physics at the University of Allahabad. His views were published in an
article titled 'A Plea for an Academy of Sciences' in December 1929 issue of the University of
Allahabad magazine; in the very next year, The National Academy of Sciences, India was
established as the first Science Academy of this country. Speaking in the inaugural session,
Prof. Saha said:
“An Academy of Science can do a great deal by educating public opinion, undertaking
particular problems, and bringing out scientific workers in various fields for discussion
and cooperative research. But the main function of the Academy should be towards
cultural improvement by contributions to human knowledge.”
Therefore, NASI got the mandate of Science and Society by its Founder. Presently, the
programmes are being steered by Prof. Anil Kakodkar, President of the Academy, and former
Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission. The Past Presidents, namely Prof M S Swaminathan,
Prof (Mrs.) Manju Sharma, Prof S K Joshi, Prof Ashok Misra, Prof Asis Datta, Dr V. P.
Kamboj, Dr. K. Kasturirangan and Prof. Akhilesh K. Tyagi have been taking keen interest in
the development of Science in general and the Academy, in particular. The Academy was also
nurtured by Late Prof M G K Menon, Prof A K Sharma and Dr V. P. Sharma- Past
Presidents, NASI (who, unfortunately, passed away in the recent past).
NASI envisions the cultivation and promotion of Science & Technology in all its branches. Such
as: (1) publishing two quarterly journals (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
India- Section A (Physical Sciences) and Section B (Biological Sciences) and one bi-monthly
journal (National Academy Science Letters); (2) holding an Annual Session in a scientific and
academic institution every year; (3) organizing symposia, seminars and workshops on subjects
of current national and scientific interest; (4) planning and executing science communication
programmes like Science Extension Lectures, State level Science Contests (Quiz, Debate,
Oration, Exhibition, Essay, etc), Talent Search, Teachers’ Workshops, Summer/Winter
Schools, Vocational Training Programmes, National level Scientific Creative Writing Contest,
Celebration of National Technology Day, National Science Day, National Mathematics Day and
World Environment Day, etc.; (5) recognizing the significant contributions of scientists at every
level by honoring them with Fellowship/Membership/Awards such as Lecture Awards, NASI-
Reliance Awards, NASI-SCOPUS Awards, NASI-Young Scientist Awards etc.; (6) instituting
prestigious Research Fellowships/Chairs/Senior-Scientist Fellowships etc. to honor
distinguished scientists; (7) organizing sensitization programmes for women
researchers/scientists all across the country; (8) conducting the ‘Safe water’ project; (9)
organizing/conducting other projects and schemes, such as Nutrition Programme for
eradicating malnutrition, Science Awareness Programme for Army Personnel,
Entrepreneurship Development Programmes and a joint programme of NASI & ICAR on Farm
Mechanization/ Implementation, etc.; and (10) establishing river galleries.

Besides the fore-mentioned activities, the Academy also organizes several other activities
jointly with other two National Science Academies- INSA and IASc- all through the year. Since
the year 2000, the annual sessions have been held at places such as Allahabad, Pune,
Shillong, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Pondicherry, Mumbai, Mysore, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur,
Trivandrum, Varanasi, Goa, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun and Pune.
These annual sessions provide a platform for the scientists across the country to interact,
present their papers and exchange expertise with each other.
The Academy holds a well-organized library known as ‘Dr. Sir Padampat Singhania Library’ in
which there are two sections, one for research students and teachers and the other for school
students. In the year 2011 the library was connected to National Knowledge Network (NKN).
The Academy is also maintaining 18 Chapters all across the country to organize scientific
activities in and around their respective regions.

Symposium on ‘Science, Technology and Ecosystem
for Sustainable Rural Development’
The need for sustainable rural development with S&T interventions has long been recognized
by the scientists as well as administrators. The research community needs to complement its
historic role in identifying problems of sustainability with a greater willingness to join with the
development and other communities to work on practical solutions to those problems. This
means bringing our S&T to bear on the highest-priority goals of a sustainability transition, with
those goals defined not by scientists alone but rather through a dialogue between scientists
and the people engaged in the practice of meeting human needs while conserving the earth's
life support systems and reducing hunger and poverty.
For the people in rural areas, particularly the marginalized communities, healthy ecosystems
support sustainable agriculture-based livelihoods and essential services such as drinking water,
sanitation and health care. Investing in natural resources also strengthens adaptation and
resilience of communities towards climate change and natural disasters. The rationale for
sustainable rural development emerges from the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-17) strategy of
faster, sustainable and inclusive growth for poverty alleviation.
With large base of its Fellows and Members spread all across the country; and their
involvement in science-society programmes, NASI has started several societal projects on Safe
Drinking Water & Sanitation, Entrepreneurship Development, Technological Sensitization of
Women, Chaupals on Nutrition & Health for Rural India, Farm Mechanisation, etc. during last
decade. The participatory approach has given immense information about the ground realities;
as well as area and scope of scientific intervention to solve the problem in a pragmatic way.
The symposium on ‘Science, Technology and Ecosystem for Sustainable Rural Development’
is a step forward in this direction, which is specially being organized in the rural area itself to
directly interact with the rural people, as well as the scientists working in the area to discuss,
deliberate and devise the scientific strategies in more meaningful manner, so that the heart of
our nation (Gramin Bharat) could become ‘Swacch, Swasth and Samarth’.
The academy this year is celebrating 125th Anniversary of Prof. Meghnad Saha and also 150th
Anniversary of Ba & Bapu with the full involvement of its Fellows and Members and the rest of
the scientific community. All the Local Chapters of NASI are involved.
The Convener of the symposium, Dr Manju Sharma, Past President, NASI. has developed a
compact programme incorporating almost all the essential points for discussion; and eminent
scientists having experience of working for the rural development have given their kind consent
to make it a fruitful brain storming. Prof. Anil Kakodkar, President, NASI has also taken keen
interest to ensure the involvement of the expertise from all relevant areas directly concerned
with the rural development; and the Vice-Chancellor, M. G. Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya,

-At a Glance
Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidhyalaya (MGCGV), located on the bank of
Holy River Mandakni near Sphatikshila at Chitrakoot was established on February 12, 1991 by
social activist Padma Vibhushan Nanaji Deshmukh, by a separate MP Government Act (9,
1991). Named after Mahatma Gandhi, this university aims to provide higher education to people
living in rural areas. It is a first rural university at Chitrakoot, India.
The broad vision of the University is to develop human resource for promoting activities related
to socio-economic development of rural community and to improve quality of life of deprived
masses through purposeful education in multidimensional field. The University has a mandate to
evolve, promote and impart knowledge and skill to overcome the emerging challenges, create
confidence among the rural community and make the use of recent advances in the field of
higher education for spiritual and social transformation of rural people.
The message is embedded in the emblem of the University in the form of ‘Padukas’. The motto
of the University is ^fo'oa xzkes izfrf"Bre~* i.e., the village is the universe in miniature. It also
focuses on the problem solving action research and transferring the viable technologies to
answer problems confronted by the rural majority.
In order to carry out its mandate, there are five faculties and within them are 15 departments and
two independent entities- Distance Education Centre and Community College. Inter-disciplinary
approach has been adopted for multidimensional growth of rural sector through advanced
technology of teaching and learning. The University offers multidisciplinary higher education
courses up to doctoral level in the disciplines of agriculture and animal sciences, applied
sciences, environment, remote sensing and GIS, agricultural engineering, food technology,
information technology, management, education, languages, communication, fine arts,
humanities, social sciences etc. Those who are not able to attend regular classes due to
economic or other service commitments, the University has established a good number of
Distance Education Centers in the state of Madhya Pradesh for imparting higher education.
Though the University is unitary in character, yet, the University has introduced Community
College scheme to impart the skill oriented courses of different levels viz. Advanced Diploma,
Diploma and Certificate programmes through 43 Gramodaya Community Colleges located in
different areas of MP. The University has conceived various skill development courses after due
consultation with the stakeholders and the same is made available to the community colleges to
be adopted in the programmes run by them. Need based specific programmes are also
introduced as per the regional demand of the community.
In order to promote skill education, the University has already introduced B.Voc. programme
in nine streams on the guidelines suggested by National Skill Development council and further, it
has also introduced BSW i.e. Bachelor Degree in Social Work (Community Leadership) for
functionaries of state Govt. agencies for carrying out Govt. programmes.

The Faculty of Science and Environment came in existence since the inception of the university (Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, 1991). In the initial phase, department of Biological Science was started under the leadership of Prof. Prabha Grover. Later on, undergraduate courses with various subject combinations were started in July, 1992 under the leadership of Prof. A. L. Kirkire (as Dean).

The faculty member’s specializations and their achievements are as follows:
Prof. Indra Prasad Tripathi is Dean, Faculty of Science and Environment, MGCGV, Chitrakoot
Satna, MP India. He has made outstanding contribution towards research and re-
standardization of traditional formulation of antidiabetic and antiseptic drugs using new
techniques and methods. He has simultaneously made remarkable contributions towards the
syntheses, characterization of metal complexes with their antidiabetic properties, antioxidant
activities, superoxide dismutase mimicking activities, free radical scavenging activities, catalytic
behavior etc. Prof. Tripathi has also worked on syntheses, characterization
of carbon nanotubes. He made carbon nanotubes through metal complexes
with natural proteins like spinach, egg albumins using various
spectroscopic, diffraction/scattering, electrochemical characterization tools.
His innovative contribution in the field of water, air and diffuse chemical
pollution of Bundelkhand and Vindhan Plateau of the country is appreciable.
Prof. Tripathi has been invited as speaker and Chair of the Session in the
3rd International Conference on Chemistry for Sustainable Development: Indian Prospective,
UAE, 3rd International Conference on Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Nepal
and 104th Indian Science Congress (Material Science Section) India. He has also organized 25
national level seminars and workshops and activities for rural masses, student's, research
scholars and scientists. He has been honored with a number of awards viz. Professor R. D.
Desai 80th Birthday Commemoration Award-2007, Research Board of Advisors, BIOVED
Fellowship Award-2012, Best Science Research Award-2012 etc. He is currently Chief Editor,
Editor and Editorial Board Member of many Research Journals. Prof. Tripathi has published 130
research papers and his Google Scholar citation-164, h index-06, i10 index-04 and Research
gate value-17.93. Prof. Tripathi is a founder member of BER Chapter, NASI and actively
engaged in the chapter activities.
Dr. Ramesh Chandra Tripathi joined this university in inception and has
been working as Associate Professor in Zoology. He is also working as
Director Research in MGCGV Chitrakoot. Dr. Tripathi completed his higher
education and D. Phil. degree from University of Allahabad. The areas of
specialization are Biodiversity, Biological Control of Insect Pests, Biological
Control of Mosquito larvae; GIS & human health. He has published 72
research papers in 20 reputed national and international journals. He also wrote a text book
Biosystematics and Taxonomy in 2005. He has been honored with the fellowship of Biocontrol
Advancement, Banglore, Zoological Society of India, Scciety of Life Science, Bioved Research
Society. He has been conferred Dr. S.L. Mishra Medal, Prof. J.S. Munshi Gold Medal,
Raghunathi Devi Medal and Young Scientist Award. He has supervised seven Ph. D. students.
He has participated in more than 70 national and international symposium, seminar, and
Training programme.
Dr. Ajay Kumar is an Associate Professor in Geology and Head,
Department of Physical Sciences. He completed his higher education - M.
Tech. (Applied Geology) and Ph. D. from Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University,
Sagar (M.P.). His area of Specialization is Geochemistry and Environmental
Geology. He has published more than 12 research papers. He has
participated in 30 National and International Seminar/Conferences/
Workshop/Training. He has more than 30 years of research and teaching experience. Two
Ph.D. theses were awarded under his supervision.
Dr. Vandana Pathak is an Associate Professor in Chemistry, Department of
Physical Sciences. She completed her higher education from Dr. Hari Singh
Gaur University, Sagar. Her area of Specialization is Analytical, Environmental
and Plant Chemistry. She has published more than 40 research papers. She
has participated in 20 National and International Seminar/Conferences/
Workshop/Training. She has more than 27 years of research and teaching experience. Six
Ph.D. theses were awarded under her supervision.
Dr. Ghan Shyam Gupta is an Associate Professor of Chemistry in the
Department of Energy and Environment. He obtained M.Sc. (Chemistry) from
Bundelkhand University, Jhanshi and Ph.D. (Chemistry- Applied Chemistry)
from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He has completed various research
projects on surface and environmental Chemistry field funded by DST, UGC,
CPCB etc. He has more than 75 research papers in his credit. He has got
Sulabh International Award (II) and Best Science Research award (MPCST). He has also 25
years teaching & research experience. In extracurricular activities, he has got Colour &
Championship (Athletics), BHU, Gold medal in SAARC Athletics competition.
Dr. Shashikant Tripathi is an Associate Professor in Remote Sensing and
GIS Division, Department of Energy and Environment. He is Post Graduate
in Geology and Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Banaras Hindu University,
Varanasi. He did P.G. Diploma in Environmental Geology from Indian
Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun. He has completed a pilot
project from Groupment pour de Development de la Teledetection
Aerospatiale (GDTA), Toulouse, France. He has also participated in various national and
international symposia/seminar, and Training programmes. He has research experience of more
than 30 years and teaching experience of 25 years. His area of research includes Hydrogeology
and environmental geology. Twenty Ph.D. theses have been awarded under his supervision and
guidance. More than 75 research papers have been published by him.
Dr. Surya Kant Chaturvedi is an Associate Professor in Zoology. He completed
his higher education from University of Allahabad. His area of specialization
includes Wild Life Biology and Landscape Ecology. He has published more than
30 research papers and participated in eight National and International
Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. He has more than 27 years of
research and teaching experience. He has been conferred Best Director Award in 2011.
Dr. Virendra Upadhyay is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Dept. of
Physical Sciences. His area of specialization is Bio-Mathematics. He completed
his higher education from University of Allahabad. He has published more than
15 research papers. He has participated in 20 National and International
Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. He has more than 25 years of research and teaching
experience.
Dr. Bharat Mishra is an Associate Professor in Physics. His area of
Specialization includes Physics & Electronics. He has published more than 76
research papers and three Books and participated in 30 National and
International Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. He has more than 26
years of research and teaching experience. Thirteen Ph.D. theses were
awarded under his supervision and guidance. He was conferred with the Best Science
Research Award in 2011 by M.P. Council of Science and Technology cell,Bhopal.
Dr. Ravindra Singh is an Associate Professor in Botany and Head, Department
of Biological Sciences. His area of specialization includes Plant Physiology,

more than 75 research papers. He has participated in 38 National and
International Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. He has more than 27
years of research and teaching experience. Twenty Ph.D. theses have been awarded under his
supervision and guidance. He got First Ranking in Research Publication in Indian Citation Index
(2014).
Dr. Sadhana Chaurasia is an Associate Professor and Head, Department of
Energy and Environment. Her area of research work includes Environmental
Monitoring, EIA and Environmental Ecology. She has more than 90 research
papers to her credit. She has 25 years of teaching & research experience. She
has supervised eight Ph. D. students and participated in more than 50 national
and international symposias, seminars, and Training programmes. She got Best Science
Teacher Award in 2013 and Fourth Ranking in Research Publication in Indian Citation Index
(2014).
Dr. Ravi Chaurey is an Associate Professor in Geology in the Department of
Physical Sciences. His area of specialization is RS & GIS, Palaeontology and
Hydrogeology. He has more than 10 research papers and 06 international
symposium, seminar, and Training programme in his credit. He got 02 young
scientist fellowships awards (FTYS Scheme of MPCST, Bhopal) and Best
paper award in 3rd International Conference at Kathmandu, Nepal on Sept. 2014. He has also
completed GWPMAP of (RGNDWM) NRSC, ISRO, Hyderabad and Mid Term Evaluation Project
of Govt. of MP completed project of Rewa, Chhatarpur, Damoh, Jabalpur Districts. He organized
as a Member, International Field Workshop on the Vindhyan Super group Central India in 2010
with BSIP & Palaeontological Society of India, Lucknow. He also submitted project DPR of
22.41 Crore with DRI, Chitrakoot and Amay Env. Bhopal to Ministry of Pan. Raj & Rural
Development.
Dr. Anil Kumar Agrawal is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Dept. of
Physical Sciences. His area of specialization is Theory of Relativity and
Cosmology & Bio-Mathematics. He published more than 36 research papers
and four books. He participated in 40 National and International
Seminars/Conferences/ Workshops/Trainings. He has more than 25 years of
research and teaching experience.
Dr. S.S. Gautam is an Associate Professor in Statistics Department of
Physical Sciences. He did Post Graduate and Ph.D. in Statistics from Mahatma
Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, (M.P.). He got
Young Scientist award in year 2012. He did “Rajeev Gandhi Jalgrahan
Pravandhan Mission” from Rural Department of MP Government and “Bamboo
Project” funded by NABARD, M.P. Besides this, he has participated in various national and
international symposiums, seminars, and Training programmes. Many National Seminar and
training programme have been organised by him. He has more than 25 years research and 25
years teaching experience. His main research interest is Experimental Design, Demography.
Eight Ph.D. theses have awarded under his supervision and guidance. More than 75 research
papers have been published by him.
Mission of Faculty of Science and Environment The main missions of the faculty are- (i) to promote learning and research generally in all branches of Sciences;
(ii) to promote scientific knowledge and wisdom especially in the rural areas;
(iii) to develop and promote the environmental awareness program in rural areas;
(iv) to advance and diffuse scientific, technical and professional knowledge, combined with
the necessary practical training to help in promoting indigenous industries and in
developing the material resources of the country; and
(v) to promote the building up of character in youth by religion and ethics as an integral
part of education.
Placement of the students Most of the students have got job in government organizations, Multi National
companies and some have developed their own business in the field of rural industries. Many
national and multinational companies/ institution of repute like LUPIN, Ramdev Chemicals,
ROLTA, SGS, RSI, etc., have providing opportunities to our students. Some students are in
job in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and other countries.

Future Thrust
The Chemistry division of Physical Science department has been conducting research
in the frontier areas of subject like Organometillic Chemistry, Biosensor, medicinal Chemistry
and Environmental Chemistry. Mathematics division has worked on Biomathematics,
advanced statistics, statistical based modeling. The Remote Sensing & GIS and Geology
division have conducting research in the frontier areas of subject like– digital image
interpretation, GIS, Geohydrology, mineral exploration and geostatistical modeling.
Department of Energy and Environment have decided to work on the thrust area like– EIA,
monitoring and management of natural resources, satellite based climatic studies, Surface
chemistry of adsorbents etc. The Department of Biological Sciences has been conducting
research in the frontier areas of subject like Biosensor, Biotechnology, Ethnobotany, Wild life
habitat analysis, EIA, Human Health, Biological control of insect pest, Biodiversity
management, and Biosystematics.
Deendayal Research Institute (DRI) - Illuminating the Path to Self-Reliance
Deendayal Research Institute (DRI), established on March 8, 1968 under the inspirational
guidance of Padma Vibhushan Shri Nanaji Deshmukh, is currently working to validate the
philosophy of "Integral Humanism". Models for development such as providing services for
health, hygiene, basic education, training for self employment etc. have been developed to
achieve overall socio-economic development and reconstruction of Indian Society. The
developmental programmes have been carried out at various centers viz. Delhi, Gonda,
Balrampur (U.P.), Chitrakoot (U.P. & M.P.), Beed and Nagpur (Maharashtra).
The mission statement of Deendayal Research Institute is: “We are not for ourselves but for
our kith and kin; our kith and kin are those who are oppressed and neglected”. The Institute
aims at evolving a social system for the transformation of our age old Indian Society suited to
the modern scientific era; and is based on the eternal values of Integral Humanism. The
basic tenets put forward by Shri Nanaji before the Organisation include "Gramodaya" and
"Swavalamban". His vision and down-to-earth practical approach is reflected in the execution
of projects and various activities of the organization. Thousands of enthusiastic young
people, inspired by his personality are actively participating in various programmes. The
results achieved are unique, successful and amazing.
Nanaji, with his great vision and complete faith in the latent strength of the people, resolved
to serve the tribal, downtrodden and the neglected rural poor of the society rejecting the
lucrative offer of being Minister of Industries in the Cabinet of Shri Morarji Desai in the year
1977. Subsequently, his declaration made on 8th October 1978 in the presence of Loknayak
Jayaprakash Narayan in Patna, is historical wherein he said, "After having lived through the
experience of today's political working style for 28 years, I have arrived at the conclusion that
the prevalent present day politics can neither help the resurgence of constructive leadership
nor become an instrument of social and economic reconstruction”.
There are several projects being executed by DRI, viz. Delhi Project, Gonda Gramodaya
Project, Beed Project Dhanyata Abhiyan, Nagpur Project: Bal Jagat, Chitrakoot Project, to
name a few. The other areas managed by DRI include Social Reconstruction, Self-Reliance
Campaign Water Management, Livelihood – Income Generation (Agriculture & Animal
Husbandry, Propagation & Conservation of Indigenous Livestock, Entrepreneurship
Development), Lifelong Health, Qualitative Education, Social Consciousness - Dispute free
Society, Research & Development in Physical Science, Information, communication and
publicity services.
In the field of education, DRI is working on a Model Educational System to make the students
self-reliant and integrate them in social activities; it has also established Gurukuls (six for
boys and four for girls) on the ancient Gurukul educational pattern. Deendayal Research
Institute has also taken the initiative of evolving an ideal model of pre-primary level quality
education. In field of health, DRI is working on alternate system, i.e; ayurveda system. Also,
a parallel industrialization system capable of providing employment for all by producing
quality goods from locally available resources through self-employment and Self Help Groups
is also being developed. Deendayal Research Institute, through the efforts of its scientists of
the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, has tried to tackle the issue of water scarcity.

Arogyadham - At a Glance
In pursuance of India’s two ancient Shastras (sciences), Yoga (including Naturopathy) and
Ayurveda for maintaining a subtle balance between body, mind, intellect and soul, the four
aspects of human life, Deendayal Research Institute has established Arogya Dham, the
J.R.D. Tata Foundation for Research in Yoga, Naturopathy & Ayurvedic Sciences. The
Arogya Dham campus, spread over 43 acres on the banks of the Madakini river in Chitrakoot,
aims at providing a model for the realization of a new life system by taking a total overview of
human development with Yoga, Naturopathy and Ayurveda. As the objective is to study the
impact of parentage, family background, environment, upbringing, as well as the properties
and effects of Yoga and Ayurveda on a life adapted to these principles, Arogya Dham has
established these facilities: An Out-patients Department (O.P.D.),In-patients Department
(IPD),Maternity and periodic center with operating theater and a neo-natal periodic wing, Fully
equipped yoga and naturopathy center, Modern Dental unit, An Ayurvedic research center,
Ayurvedic Research library, Herbal Garden, Rural Health Department, Ayurvedic Pharmacy,
Dietetics Department.
It is worth mentioning that for self-reliance campaign, institute has identified 500 villages
falling in the 50 km radius of Chitrakoot. These villages are experimental model for ‘lifelong
health’. Besides this, an outpatient department for the treatment has been set up in the
villages. Rural Health Department organizes Health Awareness & Treatment camps every
week in different villages in which a male and a female doctor, a naturopath & a yogacharya
from Arogyadham go as experts. The medical team also tries to educate villagers about the
principles of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy for maintaining lifelong health and also about
the easily available local herbs to treat common problems or diseases found in this area.
'Arogya Dham' has started its own pharmacy where all the medicines manufactured here are
in accordance with the Ayurvedic texts. All these medicines are prepared using locally
available herbs and are very cheap.

About BER (Bundelkhand Extended Region) Chapter of NASI
NASI-Bundelkhand Extended Region (BER) Chapter, with its founder chairman, Prof. K.B.
Pandeya, Former Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodya Vishwavidalya
Chitrakoot was inaugurated on December 9, 2011 at MGCVV, Chitrakoot (M.P.).
The chapter, since its inception has successfully organized various activities of science
popularization that include popular lectures, workshops and seminars etc. in different schools,
colleges and universities of different places/cities of Bundelkhand extended region e.g. Rewa,
Sagar, Gwalior, Chhatarpur, Bhopal, Indore, Chitrakoot, Tikamgarh, Satna, Maihar, Katni,
Narsingpur, Khajuraho etc. More than fifteen programmes (including International conference,
National seminar/ symposium/workshop/ extension popular lectures/ awareness programmes)
are organized every year with a focus on the rural mass connectivity with science in
collaboration with M.P. Council of Science & Technology, Bhopal; M.P. Pollution Control
Board regional office Satna; Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodya Vishwavidalya
Chitrakoot; Deendayal Research Institute Chitrakoot and other academic bodies.
Major events:
The Chapter successfully organized the workshop on "Safe water and communicable
diseases" on 2-3 May 2013 at Govt. P. G. College Satna and also workshop on
"Entrepreneurship and hands on training for skill development" on November 15-17,
2017 at DRI, Chitrakoot, which are the two historical events of this chapter.
Rejuvenation of Baolies (step wells) in Bundelkhand area:
Under the "Safe water" programme of NASI, five step wells in Bundelkhand area were
restored to assure the availability of safe water to the local peoples of Chhatarpur district of
M.P.
This year, the Chapter has started a tribal welfare project on "Participatory observation of
Ethno-medicinal practices of the tribals of Chitrakoot and Balaghat district of M.P., its
documentation; and conservation of those plants" with NASI for the welfare of tribals of
Balaghat and Chitrakoot through generating awareness about the medicinal plants of their
area.

Autonomus College, Satna (MP), who is taking keen interest in organizing several activities of
the Chapter under NASI’s mandate of science and society.

The Host City & Institutions
Chitrakoot, is a town and a nagar panchayat in the Satna district in the state of Madhya
Pradesh, India, nestled in Bundelkhand region of India, is a charismatic land of cultural,
spiritual and historical significance to the folks traveling from every nook and corner of the
world. It is a town where the past is pleasingly treasured in its colorful divine centers, while the
serene rivers, peaceful woods and miraculous sights together make it a highly visited place in
Madhya Pradesh, India. An illustrious place of superb fairy-tale significance, Chitrakoot
imitates the quintessence of Hindu lifestyle. Fiestas and fairs in this holy town have a spiritual
façade and it is geared up to eulogize the charm of Lord Rama with its different fairs. It is a
town of religious, cultural, historical and archaeological importance, situated in
the Bundelkhand region. It borders the Chitrakoot district in Uttar Pradesh, whose
headquarters Chitrakoot Dham (Karwi) is located nearby. The town lies in the historical
Chitrakoot region, which is divided between the present-day Indian states of Madhya Pradesh
and Uttar Pradesh. It is known for a number of temples and sites mentioned in Hindu
scriptures. It was in these deep forests that Ram, Sita and his brother Lakshman spent a few
months of their fourteen years of banishment ; the great sage Atri, Sati Anusuya, Dattatreya,
Maharshi Markandeya, Valmiki and various other sages, seers, devotees and thinkers
meditated; and here the principal trinity of the Hindu pantheon, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva,
took their incarnations.
It is said that all the gods and goddesses came to Chitrakoot when Rama performed
the Shraddha ceremony of his father to partake of the shuddhi (i.e. a feast given to all the
relatives and friends on the thirteenth day of the death in the family). The first known mention
of the place is in the Valmiki Ramayan, which is believed to be the first ever Mahakavya
composed by the first ever poet. As Valmiki is said to be contemporaneous with (or even
earlier than) Ram and is believed to have composed the Ramayan before the birth of Ram,
the antiquity of its fame can well be gauged.
Many people gather here on each Amavasya. Somwati Amavasyas, Deepawali, Sharad-
Poornima, Makar Sankranti and Ramanavami are special occasions for such gatherings and
celebrations. It attracts crowds throughout the year including above occasions and for Free
Eye Hospital Camps. Noted 'Ayurvedic' and 'Yoga' centres like 'Arogyadham' are located in
Chitrakoot.
