Medical Equipment Support Systems

Unistrut Corporationhas been involved inthe engineering, design and installa-tion of medical

equipment supportsystems for over five

decades. Our provensystems support X-ray equipment, surgicallighting, service columns, microsurgery units,as well as other specialized medical equip-ment in healthcare facilities worldwide.

Unistrut support extends well beyondquality products to include in-depth plan-ning, engineering, computer-aided design, fabrication, distribution and installation…a full range of services only Unistrut canprovide.

Our expertise is built on a solid foundation.Since 1935, Unistrut has been helping con-struction and design professionals build abetter world. Specifiers worldwide chooseUnistrut metal framing and related Unistrutsystems for an infinite variety of structuraland secondary-support applications.

You can count on Unistrut quality frompoint of manufacture all the way throughproject installation. The result is reliable, consistent performance wherever Unistrutmedical support systems are used. That’s

why we can issue an identification tagbacked by a full two-year limited war-

ranty that assures the high quality of

your medical support system.Unlike other support materials, our

system features components designedspecifically to meet the performance

demands of the most advanced medicalequipment. With its inherent strength andversatility, the Unistrut system adapts easilyto a wide range of environments and designparameters. Dur-ing installation,built-in adjustmentcapabilities allowthe system to befine-tuned toprecisely matchsite conditions.

With manufactur-ing plants on threecontinents andmore than a hun-dred authorizedservice centers, wecan provide theresources andexpertise to staywith you fromconception to jobcompletion.Whether you’replanning a newwing, upgrading anexisting facility, orcoordinating amulti-locationconstructionprogram, Unistrutprofessionals canhelp you meetvirtually every equipment-support need withproven, dependable, flexible solutions.

Medical Equipment Support Systems

Unistrut MedicalSupport Systemsallow both basic

and micro adjustments, so installations canbe quickly and easily adapted to specific siteconditions. Changes, slight adjustments andprecise “fit” are easy to achieve, simplifyingboth initial installation and future updates.

The Unistrutsystem is strongfrom top tobottom providingdependable andprecise support

for all your medical equipment needs. For instance, the unique Telespar® vertical

support combines the strength of squaretubing with simple adjustability. The Unistrut“K” channel, with its vertical back-to-backdesign, reduces the load at weld points.Together, these components provide supe-rior strength with maximum adjustability—primary requirements for proper operationof today’s precision medical equipment.

Ceiling tiles are installed directly on the“K” channel flange, flush with the bottomchannel opening. This creates a clean, unobtrusive look consistent with equipmentand room aesthetics.

General Specifications

I. GENERALA. SCOPE1. Contractor shall provide and install a

medical support system(s) as indicated onthe reflected ceiling plans, in rooms____________________________________located at ___________________________.System shall be a “Universal Grid” typewhen possible, with rails extending wall towall, perpendicular to the path of travel ofthe equipment. Rail shall be on centers asrequired by equipment manufacturer andallow continuous attachment along anypoint on the rail. System shall be true, plumb and level to the tolerances indi-cated, with no more than 1/720th of thespan maximum deflection in either plane, when maximum loading conditions areapplied due to equipment operation.

2. Work of others sectionsa) Ceilingb) Paintingc) Electricald) _____________

B. QUALITY ASSURANCE1. Material and installation shall be provided

by a qualified vendor, with at least five (5)years experience in the manufacture andinstallation of adjustable metal framingsupports. Vendor shall demonstrateexperience of projects of similar scope andsize, and shall maintain a continuing qualityassurance program for both its material andinstallation crews.

2. Vendor shall provide the single sourceresponsibility for materials and workman-ship, and shall provide a warranty period ofone (1) year from date of acceptance byarchitect/owner.

3. Acceptable Vendors: Unistrut Corporationand/or its authorized representative.

C. SUBMITTAL1. Shop Drawings: Successful vendor shall

submit shop drawings showing thecomplete system, including plans, sectionsand details of the system. Plans shall showall manufactured parts, by catalog numbers, all fabricated parts, and all fasteners andhardware.

2. Manufacturer’s Brochure: Brochure shallshow materials, strengths, finishes andsizes. Sufficient engineering informationshall be provided to permit stress calcula-tions. Materials listed should conform tothe appropriate specifications from ASTM,AISI, AISC, and/or AWS.

3. Calculations (optional): The medicalsupport system shall lend itself to a rationalstructural analysis with section propertiesof framing members demonstrated bycalculations. Structural calculations anddrawings shall be furnished with a stampby a licensed engineer complying with allapplicable codes and regulatory require-ments.

II. MATERIAL AND DESIGNA. MATERIAL1. Materials used shall conform to the

following ASTM specifications:ASTM 653SQ33, ASTM A570 Grade 33,ASTM A575, ASTM 675 Grade 50, SAE J429Grade 2.

2. All materials shall be protected fromcorrosion with a factory applied finish.

3. All materials shall be stamped andidentifiable by manufacturer and partnumber (where appropriate). Materialsthat appear damaged, distressed, unidentifi-able or rusted shall not be used and willnot be accepted.

B. DESIGN1. Support Structure: The support members at

the ceiling plane shall be located asindicated on the drawings. They shallconsist of Unistrut “K” series x-ray channel. The spacing shall allow installation ofstandard modular 24" ceiling fixtures andequipment. It shall be possible to attachthe medical equipment at any point on thesupport system.

2. Ceiling Anchorage: Whenever possible, attachment to ceiling structure above shallbe done by means of imbedded concreteinserts, through bolts, or by directattachment to the structural framing of thebuilding.

3. Vertical supports: The exposed “K” seriesrails and the ceiling anchorage shall beconnected by a series of 12 GaugeTelespar® vertical supports as indicated onthe drawings. Vertical supports shallprovide for both basic and micro verticaladjustment.

4. Seismic Bracing: Medical system shall beadequately braced to meet all coderequirements.

5. Loading: The support structure shall bedesigned to support a concentrated load of______ lbs. , at any single point along theexposed rails. The concentrated load shallbe the maximum that will be encounteredby positioning the equipment at theextremities of its travel (maximal loadconfiguration).

6. Safety Factor: The system shall be designedwith a minimum safety factor of 21⁄2 basedon ultimate strength under static loadingconditions.

III. INSTALLATIONA. FIELD MEASUREMENTS

The contractor shall make field measure-ments to assure that the medical supportcan be installed according to plans, andwithout interference with structuralframing, mechanical systems, plumbing orother obstructions. Any interferences shallbe reported to the architect.

B. SEQUENCINGThe contractor shall assure that thesupport system is installed in a timely andpractical sequence, ahead of any extensiveelectrical, mechanical or HVAC work in thearea, and prior to any ceiling framing orroom finishes.
