Seventh Microfluidics Consortium

The Seventh Microfluidics Consortium brings together current and future stakeholders from across a wide range of backgrounds with a shared interest in facilitating the growth of the industry through better understanding of the challenges, opportunities and choices which it faces.

Our current membership includes: CEA (F) ;EV Group (A) Philips (NL); Micronit (NL); Danaher (USA); Dolomite (UK) ; Fluigent (F); HP (USA); Dublin City University (IRL) and Fraunhofer (D), Lonza (CH) ; Philips (NL); IMT (CH), Magnomics (PT), and University of Cambridge (UK).

We organize closed meetings for our members on both sides of the Atlantic where we seek to promote our mission “to grow the market for microfluidics enabled products and services” by

While helping our members to do deals along the way.

With the support of DCU Dublin on this occasion as well as our closed session on Oct 7th we are also reaching out to selected guests in Europe and beyond our membership in an Open Meeting on Oct 8th seeking to engage them in our vision, projects and thinking.

Dr. Jens Ducrée is a principal investigator for Microfluidic Platforms at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI) and holds a Full Professorship of Microsystems in the School of Physical Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU). Dr. Ducrée is also academic member of the National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR) and the 3U Joint Institute of Global Health (JIGH).

The main part of his research is directed towards novel microfluidic platforms and associated actuation, detection, fabrication and instrumentation technologies for the integration, automation, miniaturization and parallelization of sample preparation and detection of bioanalytical assays (e.g. immunoassays, nucleic acid testing, general chemistry and cell counting). Typical applications are sample-to-answer systems for biomedical point-of-care and global diagnostics, liquid handling automation for the life sciences (e.g. concentration / purification and

amplification of DNA / RNA from a range of biosamples), environmental monitoring and food safety.

We are developing, manufacturing and selling products and systems that support the migration of testing from the laboratory closer to the patient with the intention of improving both clinical and economic healthcare outcomes. Our initial clinical focus is on developing a range of rapid testing products in the areas of hematology oncology,

specifically B-cell dyscrasias.

Invited Expert Witness: Darwin Reyes-Hermandez NIST

Dr. Reyes-Hernandez is a research chemist in the Nanoscale Metrology Group in the

Engineering Physics Division of the Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) at the

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He received his Ph.D. and B.S.

in chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico. He also received an M.S. in Applied

Biomedical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. In his doctoral work, he

combined the fields of environmental analytical chemistry and toxicology. In it, he

chemically characterized airborne particulate matter from an area in Puerto Rico of high

incidence of cancer, asthma, and other respiratory diseases, using cell-based

toxicological assays. After completing his Ph.D. he was awarded with a National

Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to work with Professor Andreas Manz at

Imperial College, London, U.K., where he worked for two years. During this postdoctoral

experience, he worked with microfluidic devices in developing two-dimensional

separation systems and analog computing using glow discharge in microfluidic chips.

The Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI) is a Science Foundation Ireland CSET (Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology). The BDI vision is to transform healthcare by pioneering advances in the science and technology of diagnostics and by translating these advances into clinical use.

BDI research addresses major clinical challenges informed by the partnership of clinicians, scientists and industry. Building on key scientific insights, the BDI will now apply its established capabilities to create integrated Point-of-Care solutions, which will have major impacts on diagnosing disease and sustaining human health.

Sammy Datwani : Labcyte (US) - Droplets

Design, develop and launch new products to expand the market capability of acoustic liquid dispensing. I direct, manage and lead internal and external research programs for R&D, systems, scientific and advanced developments to create new instruments and new products (plastic consumables and reagents) and other novel capabilities for the company. My unique skill set combines understanding fluid dynamics on the micro- and nanoscale, the knowledge of interactions of system components, interfacial transport, microscale reactors, electrostatics, solution and polymer chemistry, genomics, proteomics, single-cell analysis, advanced applications, instrument engineering, laboratory automation, modeling, microarraying, analytical methods and biological instrumentation.

Professor Gregory Nordin (Brigham Young University, US)

In this talk we demonstrate that 3D printing with a digital light processor

stereolithographic (DLP-SLA) 3D printer can be used to create high density

microfluidic devices with active components such as valves and pumps.

Leveraging our previous work on optical formulation of inexpensive resins (RSC

Adv., 2015, 5, 106621), we demonstrate valves with only 10% of the volume of our

original 3D printed valves (Biomicrofluidics, 2015, 9, 016501), which were already

the smallest that have been reported. Moreover, we show that incorporation of a

thermal initiator in the resin formulation along with a post-print bake can

dramatically improve the durability of 3D printed valves up to 1 million actuations.

Using two valves and a valve-like displacement chamber (DC), we also create compact 3D printed pumps.

With 5-phase actuation and a 15 ms phase interval, we obtain pump flow rates as high as 40 μL min−1.

Anne Le Nel is graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan and Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie Paris. She defended PhD in 2008 in miniaturized system for protein analysis directed by Jean-Louis Viovy (MMBM, UMR168 Institut Curie) and Myriam Taverna (LPNSS, University Paris-Sud). She has a 7 years experience in microfluidics and project management.

“Next Generation inVitro Diagnostics” Filipe Cardoso : Magnomics (PT)

Our device consists of a portable reader with inbuilt sample treatment (swab of fluid),

including bacteria separation and DNA purification. After DNA amplification, also

performed by the device, the DNA is identified via magnetic detection on the surface of

a small chip, which can detect up to thousands of different strands, including antibiotic

resistance genes. This chip is part of a disposable, one-off cartridge that is inserted

into the reader and that can be produced to meet the diagnosis needs of the client.

The readout consists of a simple yes/no marker for each type of bacteria and gene,

sent via email or text message to the user

Mark Gilligan is group chairman and CEO of Blacktrace Holdings.

The group is now structured so that the underlying theme of all that we do is

CEA-LETI-HEALTH (Fr) “Cellenc Platform : First Steps towards Cell Encapsulation Standardization

for Cell Therapy and Tissue Engineering Applications Claire Authesserre, PhD student

The CellencTM platform has the ambition to standardize the cell containing

microcapsules by automating the multi-step process of cell encapsulation. This

microfluidic platform delivers biopolymer microcapsules ranging from 50 to 500µm in

which cells can be cultured. Microfabrication developments are performed to integrate

the whole process in a closed-loop credit card-footprint cartridge in order to insure

sterility. The next generation of µfluidic cartridge will follow the standards defined with

the ENIAC-MFManufacturing project where CEA-LETI is strongly involved. Main

applications of such a platform are the production of bio-inks, the enhancement of

grafting or the immune protection of cells for cell therapy and tissue engineering

applications.

Magnomics is a start-up focused on delivering the next generation of fully portable, easy to use in-vitro molecular diagnostic devices.

Our novel proprietary technology is centred around on-chip DNA extraction, amplification and magnetic detection. It is a lab, on a chip.
