Now, 17 years later, I am able to make better choices when it comes to supplements. Most doctors today would be just as confused as I once was. In medical school we were taught a model of disease. We were trained to diagnose illness and then to prescribe the one drug to treat the illness. Nowhere in my medical training was I taught about health and how to maintain and achieve it. Later, when I became interested in holistic medicine, I began to test my patients for various nutrient levels. I was astounded at the results. The vast majority of my patients, especially the ill ones, had many different nutrient deficiencies. Correcting these imbalances with a nutritional program has proved very effective for the vast majority of my patients. There is no question, however, that conventional medicine has an inherent bias against nutrient therapies. Recent media attention given to multivitamin use in more than 161,000 women illustrates the bias. The Women’s Health Initiative looked at eight years of multivitamin use in the participants. Researchers speculate that weight gained during the holidays usually portends what the rest of the year will hold, and adds up to be a major cause of obesity. In other words, that five pounds you pack on might end up being a tough burden to carry later on if you are not careful. June 21-July 21, 2006 Vol. 4 No. 6

Bernanke’s Panic: Averting the Coming Currency Crisis

You probably missed this article, but it appeared recently in The Wall Street Journal. It wasn’t splashed across the cover of the venerable financial daily and it didn’t draw any comment from the 24-hour talking heads on CNBC.

But the candid discussion about the state of U.S. currency should have set off many alarm bells.

The facts and concerns laid out in the Journal article offer an understanding of the predicament facing the Federal Reserve, its new chairman Ben Bernanke and the whole U.S. economy.

Bernanke continues to emphasize that “inflation” is the key reason for keeping interest rates high. We have argued that such claims about inflation are nothing more than posturing. Both Bernanke and Greenspan have been hiding behind the smokescreen of “incipient inflation.”

Inflation is currently measured by the CPI (Consumer Price Index) at 5.2% annually. Clearly, it’s an increase over the 3.4% CPI the government claimed for last year. And core inflation — which doesn’t include energy and food — indicates inflation is tracking at 3.1%. That’s up around 50% from last year’s 2.2%.

We have little doubt inflation is increasing — and even more so than the government claims.

With oil prices up more than 100% in two years, we find it remarkable that inflation is moving up so slowly. In “The Inflation Lie” April 2005 edition of FIR, we laid out a compelling argument that for many years, inflation has been much higher than the official rate — for more than a decade, at least.

Contrary to what Bernanke says, he, the federal government and politicians love insidious inflation. It is the easiest political way out of the massive private and public debt that hangs over the U.S. economy like an open noose.

No doubt, the federal government and the central bank love lying about the official inflation rate because the currency supply can be inflated without the additional burden of additional exorbitant increases in government social spending.

Since government spending on social programs like Social Security is fixed to CPI — and almost all government employee contracts are linked to CPI

Updated FIR Portfolio & Review

I have been practicing holistic medicine for more than 17 years. When I first began researching and studying holistic medicine, I was overwhelmed

with the various forms of supplements available. How could anyone decide which form of vitamin C was best? When I went into a health food store, there were more than 20 brands to choose from. I had no idea which brand to choose and why one brand might be better than another. Now, 17 years later, I am able to make better choices when it comes to supplements.

Most doctors today would be just as confused as I once was. In medical school we were taught a model of disease.

The authors of this study reported that the use of a multivitamin did not lower a woman’s risk for heart disease and cancer.

Media coverage of this study was astounding. It made headlines in nearly every major newspaper. In The New York Times, the headline read, “Vitamin Pills: A False Hope?” The article went on to quote a prominent physician, who claimed, “The public’s belief in the benefits of vitamins and nutrients is not supported by the available scientific data.” I wonder to which data he refers.

If he is referring to the data found in this study, then he needs to reread it. It was done via a questionnaire that participants filled out. No one was given a specific multivitamin to take; the women merely were asked whether they took a multivitamin. So, each woman was on her own to pick her own multivitamin and to take it. In fact, it is unclear whether the participants actually took multivitamins.

Furthermore, many multivitamins on the market are of very low quality. Some contain synthetic vitamins instead of natural, bioidentical vitamins. Many of the negative studies about vitamins are

Winter Health WorriesIt’s that time of year again: good food, good friends, and good cheer — bad news for our waistlines and our health.

Let’s face it: The holidays present an especially trying time for most of us. During celebrations we forget about watching our diets and give in to the tasty temptations of the season.

Researchers speculate that weight gained during the holidays usually portends what the rest of the year will hold, and adds up to be a major cause of obesity. In other words, that fi ve pounds you pack on might end up being a tough burden to carry later on if you are not careful.

While we should all enjoy the season and loosen up a bit, we shouldn’t throw all caution to the wind. With a little effort and pre-planning, good times can be had without a total abandonment of good nutrition.

Traditional Foods Come With Modern WoesFor most, the staple of the holiday meal is turkey with dressing

and cranberry sauce or a baked ham. These foods often contain many additives that can have dire consequences to your health.

Examine food labels carefully. In today’s mass production of industrialized food, turkey and

baked ham can present real problems for our health. Of particular concern is the practice of injecting ham and turkey

(as well as other meats) with either broth or hydrolyzed protein extracts.

Labels frequently state that they are injected with “12 percent vegetable broth” or “10 percent hydrolyzed vegetable protein.”

These are code words for the glutamate additives. Their purpose is to boost the taste of the foods. But glutamates do much more than just give foods an extra punch of fl avor. They do untold amounts of harm to our bodies. (For more detailed information on food additive dangers, refer to the October 2007 issue, “Food Additives: What You Eat Can Kill You.”)

Glutamate additives are always a major concern when cooking. A number of ready-made mixes, especially gravies, dressings and other packaged foods, contain glutamate additives, listed as either MSG or as one of its many aliases:

• hydrolyzed vegetable protein • soy protein isolate

ASK DR. BLAYLOCK• High arsenic, iron levels;

The authors of this study reported that the use of a multivitamin did not lower a woman’s risk for heart disease and cancer.1

Simple Nutrients and Foods That Can Save Your Life

In This Issue . . . You are what you eat — literally. All the cells

in your body, including brain cells, make themselves anew every five months. Some, like your skin cells, renew every month. The foods you eat fuel this cell growth. That’s why proper nutrition is so critical to a healthy brain and body.

Food is like a drug, and it has a powerful impact on how you feel. Eat right, and you feel energetic and alert all day long. Eat wrong, such as having three doughnuts to start your day, and you could end up feeling lethargic and dull just a half-hour later.

Likewise, if you want to have a great brain, you must consistently give it nutrient-rich foods. This is one of the easiest, most effective strategies to boost brain power quickly. In this issue, I’ll be sharing nine tips for brain-healthy eating.

Drink More WaterConsidering that your brain is 80 percent water,

proper hydration is the first rule of good nutrition. Even slight dehydration increases the body’s stress hormones, which can decrease your ability to think clearly. Over time, increased levels of stress hormones are associated with memory problems.

I recommend drinking at least 84 ounces of liquids a day. Choose liquids that don’t have any artificial sweeteners, sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol cause dehydration, so they work against your brain’s needs for hydration.

Watch Your CaloriesEating less helps your brain and it also can help you

live longer, according to research. Restricting calories

also controls your weight and helps prevent obesity, which can decrease your risk for heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Limiting calorie intake also triggers certain mechanisms in the body to increase the production of nerve growth factors, which are beneficial to the brain.

Personally, I love to eat, so I hate this principle. My grandfather was a candy maker, and some of my happiest childhood memories are of helping him make fudge, English toffee, and pralines. To this day, candy is the ultimate comfort food for me, but it makes my mind foggy and slow.

My mother, too, is an amazing cook who loves to whip up Lebanese dishes, which aren’t always in the “low-calorie” category. I love her cooking, but I hate the idea of being fat and unhealthy.

Since I love my brain even more than I love Mom’s cooking, I eat fewer calories than I need to maintain my weight, and I recommend you do the same. I strive to eat fewer than 1,800 calories a day, which is about 200 less than what a man my age (over 50) needs to maintain his weight.

Beat the Recession with High-Yield Income InvestmentsAll over the media we hear talk of the ‘R’ word — recession.

We have been forecasting over the past 18 months that the U.S. economy has been moving toward a recession. Our early warning system has once again worked for our readers — though we are not necessarily happy to have been the first to bring you the bad news.

In this edition of Financial Intelligence Report we are again revisiting a topic we have discussed often — investing for income.

We believe during recessionary periods investors should be in a defensive mode. One of the past tactics is to invest in high-yielding income vehicles that protect you from price depreciation while throwing off cash during lean economic times.

But before we discuss these investment opportunities, let’s again take a look at how events are unfolding that will directly impact your economic

well being. The housing bust is far from over. FIR’s May 2007

edition predicted the unwinding of the highly leveraged subprime housing market. That forecast was dead-on, and the subprime debacle caused a potentially disastrous gridlock in the credit markets.

The massive leverage and almost fraudulent “slicing and dicing” of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) eventually

caused a major credit problem, itself a recessionary influence. In addition, as noted in May, a major downturn in residential housing was

likely to occur and worsen. Well, it certainly happened, and it triggered a bursting of the incredible liquidity-driven asset bubble of the past few years. (See chart on page 2.)

A worsening housing market would, sooner or later, affect consumer spending, which makes up 72 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Most Wall Street “experts” and “cheerleaders” ridiculed us. Senior figures such as President Bush, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said that our economy was “strong” and looked good into the future. Nothing to worry about, they said.

So, we watched as the Fed lowered its discount rate by 25 basis points in

The Dirty Little Secret:Stealth InflationToday, stock and bond markets appear to be booming and gold has fallen. This is based on a lowered geopolitical risk, lower oil prices, and low inflation together with an expected fall in interest rates. The key is the outlook for inflation — but what is the real rate of inflation? You’ll be surprised!

When I filed my income tax return this year, I found that my deductible expenses had risen far faster than the 2.8% published Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate. Unquestionably, many readers must have had a similar experience. The costs for transportation, housing, and commodities have risen across the board.

So how can the published “official” CPI be so far below the “real” rate of inflation actually experienced by consumers?

Last month, FIR’s publisher Christopher Ruddy touched on the inflation matter. It is an important topic — one of the most critical for investors, and we are exploring it once again this month.

The stock market is hoping for a downturn in economic growth, but only a downturn that helps bring interest rates down without hurting profitability.

It is a wonderful hope — but likely illusory.

So great is this fascination with interest rates that we have recently seen the strange phenomenon of the “hope-inspired”

stock market taking its lead from the more prudent bond market, as they keyed-in on the 10-year Treasury yield as a predictor of lower rates.

The real Fed rate is at a historically low 2.45% (5.25% less core CPI inflation at 2.80%).

Fed action on interest rates is dependent upon a subtle balance between inflation (headline, core and the true rate) and the outlook for economic growth, with a serious weakening in retail housing.

This is quite some balancing act!

At present the Fed is on “hold,” but what next?

On Oct. 12, The Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. budget deficit had shrunk by a whopping $71 billion, based on lower tax rates yielding greater aggregate taxes.

This was a major event showing that lower tax rates do create enterprise, more jobs and more aggregate taxes.

However, the good news was offset by news that the U.S. trade
