Metropolitan Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, is the holding company of the Metropolitan Group of companies.

With nine subsidiary companies specializing in a range of sectors from workplace solutions, information technology, communications, engineering, air conditioning and refrigeration, vertical and horizontal transportation, power and energy as well as photography and imaging solutions, Metropolitan Holdings is a privately owned diversified Group.

Active in Sri Lanka for almost six decades, it is one of the foremost business houses in the country. The core objective is driven towards excellence in customer service, bound by a common set of values linked across the entire organization.

The sole authorized distributor for top global brands such as Canon, Acer, York, Johnsons Controls, Pramac, Alvarion, Mitel, Suse, Huawei, Telrad, Double A among others, the Group operates through a specialist sector CEO for each subsidiary company.

THE BIRTH OF OFFICE AUTOMATION Metropolitan Group has carried office space into the new age

When an accountant decided to venture into the office equipment business in 1958, he was taking on established blue-chip competitors in the field. But with an unerring feel for the real needs of his customers and an uncompromising eye for quality, as well as what must have been a strong belief in himself, J S Ambani was able to steer his company to early success, bringing renowned brands such as Royal from USA, Facit from Sweden and Trodat from Austria to the island.

Half a century later, the company that he started and then encouraged his five sons to develop, has grown to proportions that must have been even greater than those J S dreamed of. But Metropolitan's steadfast belief in quality, its commitment to partnering with the best, and its ability to fulfil its promise of creating more productive work spaces is still recognizable today.

When the younger generation of Ambani's, including current Chairman J. J. Ambani joined their father in the business in the early seventies, the stage was set for the business to take off. Electronic office equipment was the latest thing and Metropolitan's business agility and partnerships with top brands, meant that they were well positioned to supply state-of-the-art electronic calculators, typewriters, teller machines, accounting machines and IT equipment.

With the global electronic revolution and the opening up of the local economy in 1977, the company seized the opportunity to further expand its portfolio.

Metropolitan began importing banking machines from East Germany’s Robotron, and at the time were the only local company supplying electro-mechanical current account banking machines for the entire banking industry in the country. Between 1970 and 1980 Metropolitan's staff grew from 30 to nearly 380.

When the telecom equipment and services sector was liberalized, Metropolitan was amongst the first to respond. Metropolitan Communications (Pvt) Ltd. and Metropolitan Computers (Pvt) Ltd were formed in 1980 and 1981 respectively, headed by qualified chartered engineers including current Deputy Chairman Erajh Gunaratne and current Group Consultant A. K. Kumarasena, to focus on the growing telecommunication and information technology needs of the country. Gunaratne, commenting on the company’s diversification at the time says, “We brought technology to a market that was open and thirsty for anything new.”

The strong engineering foundation that the technology-based companies were founded on stood the company in good stead with the quality of their brands and the technical expertise of their marketing and service teams, built up through years of extensive training, together creating an unbeatable combination.

Metropolitan soon became the largest provider of the entire range of telecom related equipment starting from a simple key system to the complex PBX system. The company also supplied automated teller machines and desktop computers. Metropolitan’s turnkey introduction of desktop computing to Bank of Ceylon and its branches in 1981 paved the way to the subsequent rapid development of branch level computerization.

In 1992, the government privatized the plantation sector and Metropolitan decided to venture into a whole new area, offering plantation management as a new service.

This was the beginning of Bogawanthalawa Plantations Ltd which Metropolitan succeeded in turning into the first profit making plantation company. It was also the first to be invited to buy into the plantation companies by the government.

In another profitable departure from its core business in 1995, Metropolitan partnered with Telia, the largest Swedish telecom operator and local National Development Bank, to set up the country's first private telecom operator, Suntel.

Since its inception, Metropolitan has contributed to many major projects of national significance, including communication solutions for the defense forces. Most recently, the Group successfully implemented the new smart card driving licenses offered by the RMV and the city surveillance project initiated by Sri Lanka Police in two showcase public-private partnerships.

The Metropolitan Group today has a wide range of products and services in imaging and photography, IT, communications, engineering technology, infrastructure, power and energy. The Group also markets and supports consumer products such as cameras, tabs, mobile phones, lighting, desktops and laptops.

With an excellent mix of youth and experience, the company’s ‘m-powered’ employees form the backbone of the Metropolitan success story. A senior and well respected sales and marketing personality, Mr. Maharoof counts for over 38 years of sales and marketing career at Metropolitan. As Group Director, he leads the Group’s core business segments and has been instrumental in diversifying the business into the national level public sector projects and driving growth of the product sectors. His vast experience coupled with his strong management skills and vision has helped elevate the company from an office automation provider, to a complete workplace solutions provider.

Mr. Roshan Tissera - Managing Director, MCL

A well respected telecommunications industry personality, Mr. Tissera has been serving the Metropolitan Board for 23 years as the head of the communications sector of the Group. Instrumental in several key partnerships with global brands and acquisitions of projects, he counts for over 36 years of industry experience .With a strong network of experts across the telecommunications and engineering sectors across SL and Asia, Mr. Tissera has been a key driver in the Group’s growth in the telecommunications arena.

Mr. Taslim Rahaman - Managing Director, MPHL

A well known and well respected Marketer, Mr. Rahaman has been a key driver in the development of Metropolitan’s consumer imaging sector and the Group’s expansion into overseas markets. A member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK), a member of the Board of Governors at SLIM and a Masters holder in Business Administration, He has been a revolutionary influence of the photography sector. Counting over 35 years in the industry and in marketing and sales, he has been serving at the Metropolitan Board for almost a decade.

Ms. Roberts is also a member of CIMA (UK) and a member of the Metropolitan Board during the last 8 years, She is also a Masters holder in Finance at Cardiff University (UK) and in Business Administration at PIM (SL).


Mr. Charith Molligoda - Director MEPL

An Engineer by profession, Mr. Molligoda is also a Fellow of the Chartered Management Accountants (UK), and a member of the Lanka Association of Building Services Engineers. He also holds a Degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration. Mr. Molligoda has over 24 years of industry experience and has been serving at Metropolitan for the last 10 years as a member of the Board.

Mr. Jagath Ravindra - Director MATL/ MARL

With more than 30 years of industry experience in technology projects and office automation, Mr. Ravindra is a senior Board Member, overseeing the Group’s technology and infrastructure projects. He specializes in custom designed large scale projects in all sectors and industries.

Mr. Susil Peiris - Director MCPL

A qualified information technology engineer, Mr.Peiris has extensive working experience in diversified companies in Sri Lanka and in the Middle East. With more than 30 years experience in multiple sectors from manufacturing, banking, hospitality and retail, he is also a MBA holder, as well as a former Vice President of the Computer Society of Sri Lanka, a member of the British Computer Society, a certified BPO Team Leader and Quality Analyst. Serving the Board at Metropolitan since 2013, Mr.Peiris is a well respected member of the IT fraternity.

Mr. Anil Gunawardana - Group Chief Technology Officer/ Director MTSL

A Chartered Engineer by profession and a fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (UK), Mr. Gunawardena is the Group’s Chief Technology Officer guiding the Group’s technology projects. He is a key driver in the introduction of cutting edge technology solutions for several projects in Sri Lanka and overseas. With a degree in electronics and communications and more than two decades of experience in the technology sector, Mr. Gunawardena is a well reputed systems design engineering specialist.

Mr. Sanjeev Ariaratnam - Director MTSL/ MCPL

A Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) and an MBA holder, he heads the telecom services and mobile phone business of Metropolitan. With more than 20 years of trade marketing, sales and brand marketing experience, Mr. Ariaratnam has been a country head and business lead in some of Sri Lanka’s top private sector firms. Despite being the shortest serving member of the Metropolitan Board, he brings a gamut of experience from the tobacco, brewery and mobile industries.

Mr. Ali Asgar Roshanali - Director MOL

A Chartered Marketer by profession, Mr. Roshanali is the youngest member of the Metropolitan Board. Counting for 16 years of experience in sales and marketing, he is heading Metropolitan’s corporate B2B business. Joining the company as a Trainee Sales Representative, Mr. Roshanali’s contribution to the business has been both academic and practical. He is a SLIM Practicing Marketer with CIM (UK) and a certified Professional Marketer of Asia Pacific.

Metropolitan Computers (Pvt) Ltd, is the information technology (IT) arm of Metropolitan and is among the largest IT companies in Sri Lanka. Metropolitan Communications (Pvt) Ltd, was established in 1985 the company has been providing mission-critical communication technology solutions for the defense, healthcare and hospitality sectors, as well as private enterprises across Sri Lanka for three decades. Currently, the company offers a range of Copiers, Multi function devices, Presentation aids and Production Machines as well as several other value added services, including a machine rental option to corporate Sri Lanka.

Having introduced the first colour copier to Sri Lanka, Metropolitan is the sole authorized distributor for copiers and production machines from the world-renowned Canon Inc., Japan. Canon has the widest range of printing and imaging devices in the world from basic inkjet personal printers to industrial production machines. The range of models comprehensively fits every segment in the product category and continues to dominate the local market with a major market share. Networked and high security solutions have given users an edge over the competition. With its own high speed digital printing facility, the Company undertakes value added services to scan, print and compile large volume reports and manuscripts. The service includes cost effective and exclusive color printing to customers who seek instant and short-run print jobs.


INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYMetropolitan is an industry leader in this sector in Sri Lanka. Providing a range of products from computers and peripherals, to networking and specialized software solutions such as print and document management solutions, cyber security and several cloud based software solutions.

Metropolitan was one of the first companies to introduce personal computer systems to Sri Lanka and handled the first computerization project of the largest state bank. It is ranked amongst the top five IT companies in the country, having implemented some of the largest public sector IT projects. The information technology company markets Acer desktops and notebooks, servers, LCD monitors, multimedia projectors, together with accessories and peripherals. Metropolitan computers is also an IBM business partner in Sri Lanka, which has installed many IBM servers in key business organizations. The company dominates the large-scale solutions market and has been recognized as an `Outstanding Business Partner'.

The product portfolio also extends to High-speed ̀ Shuttle Matrix' line printers capable of printing from 500 to 2400 lines per minute from the brand Printronix. POWER & ENERGYIdentifying the need for a strong power and energy sector for the growth of the nation, Metropolitan partnered with Pramac and Mitsubishi, in offering the full range of products and services in standby power generation. The company enjoys a substantial market share with installations with capacities ranging from 1 KVA to 3,000 KVA.

Solutions in this sector also includes a range of lighting products from LED lighting, lighting controls solutions, hotel guest room lighting controls systems. The product portfolio includes internationally acclaimed brands such as Thorn (UK). The company provide lighting solutions for commercial and industrial requirements.

In addition, the Company also specializes in electrical contracting and energy management solutions.

Metropolitan has achieved the highest ranking as an EM-1 contractor registered with the Institute of Construction, Training and Development (ICTAD). The company is now among the few ISO 9001:2008 certified engineering companies in Sri Lanka.


BUILDING MANAGEMENTMetropolitan ventured into building management solutions in 2006, since has implemented several projects in Sri Lanka. The projects are designs with advanced technology from Johnson Controls. As the sole authorized agent Johnson Controls, offers intelligent world-class systems that networks every aspect of a building from HVAC, lighting, security and protection systems – enabling them to communicate on a single platform to deliver the valuable information which allows smarter, decisions while enhancing occupants' comfort, safety and productivity.

Energy Auditing/ ImplementationOver the years, Metropolitan has undertaken energy management solutions in commercial and industrial establishments from initial energy audit to implementation of energy efficiency. The company has carried out energy audits and implemented solutions in plantation, food and manufacturing sector organizations. Metropolitan's clientele varies from government, private and SME sector as well as large manufacturing plants and commercial buildings. A select high end residential projects have also been concluded by the company. Metropolitan ensures that the systems are integrated and intelligent enough to ensure the building functions efficiently. AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATIONMetropolitan is the authorised distributor for Johnson Controls (USA) range of YORK residential, commercial and industrial air-conditioning equipment in Sri Lanka. The range comprise of split, multi split, VRF, air/water cooled package units and a wide range of chillers, fan coil units and air-handling units for commercial and industrial requirements.

Metropolitan undertakes projects on turnkey basis from initial load calculation to layout design and implementation of projects. The company has a team of engineers for design and implementation of projects and after sales support. An EM-1 contractor under the ICTAD classification in the field of air-conditioning, The company has grown to become one of the largest and most cost effective air-conditioning contractors in Sri Lanka.

All YORK chillers are manufactured to Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute standards. A high energy efficiency range of chillers to comply with green building/ LEED certification requirements, introduced by YORK is providing an excellent option for new project requirements and several such projects have been already implemented locally by Metropolitan. Being a global giant in the field of air-condition, Johnson Controls continues to provide latest technology innovations, which are channeled to a discerning group of customers by Metropolitan.


PHOTOGRAPHYIn the consumer electronics range, Metropolitan is the market leader in the photography and related products sector. The company has pioneered in the development of Sri Lanka's photography industry.

Representing the globally renowned brand, Canon for the last three decades, the company has introduced the most advanced camera and lens technology to Sri Lanka. Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator Co., Ltd has been manufacturing and installing escalators and passenger lifts for its global clientele spread across Europe, US, Africa and Asia. The company is currently the largest supplier of vertical and horizontal transport in the Chinese continent and is a market leader worldwide.

In this sector, Metropolitan specialize in passenger lifts, car lifts, hospital lifts, escalators and walkalators.

Relying on the superior pioneering technology of Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevators, all our products provide efficiency, energy saving solutions and comfort.


Incorporated in 1995, the company has successfully completed several property development projects within Colombo and its suburbs over the last 2 decades. The business which aimed at creating well designed and constructed housing for the middle and upper segments of the market, was later expanded into condominium property development as well. Several housing projects have been completed over the period in Battaramulla, Piliyandala, Kottawa and Athurigiriya, which are popular suburbs in Colombo. The projects included development of the property and the construction of dwellings to blend with the local surroundings. The houses were designed and constructed with longevity and comfort in mind. Home owners are provided a broad cost framework and style guideline, which is a unique feature of the Company. PROPERTY & INVESTMENT


CONSUMER SECTORMetropolitan embarked on the retail sector in early 2000, identifying the shift in market trends of purchasing technology products, from corporate to consumer purchasing. With the setting up of ‘M centers’ a retail store chain, in addition to the Metropolitan branches spread across the country, the Company expanded its portfolio to address the technology requirements of the individual consumer. From computing, printing and telephoning devices, the M center offers a range of products that include residential air-conditioning, portable generator, copiers, cash registers and duplicators for SMEs. Establishing itself as a one stop solution for technology and IT requirements of end consumers, M centers today has a branch network of 12 showrooms across Sri Lanka, that include fully fledged service centers for customer convenience and easy access. In addition, M centers had a network of 200 dealers island wide, carrying key IT brands into the grass-root level and urban communities. These dealers are further supported by the Metropolitan regional branch network in marketing, training and after sales support.

The Metro Academy was set up in 2008 as the educational arm of Metropolitan to enhance and develop the skills and knowledge of employees of Metropolitan.
