Tom’s Humour Page
Winters are fierce in Alberta where he lives, so the owner of a construction project felt he was doing a good deed
when he bought earmuffs for his foreman. Noticing, however, that the foreman wasn't wearing the earmuffs even
on the bitterest day, the project manager asked, "Didn't you like the muffs?" The Foreman said, "They're a thing of
beauty." "Why don't you wear them?" The Project Manager said. The Foreman explained, "I was wearing them the
first day, and somebody offered to buy me lunch, but I didn't hear him! Never again, never again!"
My husband and I purchased an old home in Northern Ontario State from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast
approaching and I was concerned about the house's lack of insulation. "If they could live here all those years, so
can we!" my husband confidently declared. One November night the temperature plunged to below zero, and we
woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house
warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up. "For the past 30 years," he muttered, "they've gone to Florida
for the winter."
On New Year's Eve, the hostess stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of
midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. Well, it
was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death. A man walks into a bar and has a couple of beers. Once he is done the bartender tells him he owes $9.00. "But I
paid, don't you remember?" says the customer. "Okay," says the bartender, "If you said you paid, you did." The
man then goes outside and tells the first person he sees that the bartender can't keep track of whether his customers
have paid. The second man then rushes in, orders a beer and later pulls the same stunt. The bartender replies, "If
you say you paid, I'll take your word for it." Soon the customer goes into the street, sees an old friend, and tells
him how to get free drinks. The man hurries into the bar and begins to drink high-balls when, suddenly, the
bartender leans over sand says, "You know, a funny thing happened in here tonight. Two men were drinking beer,
neither paid and both claimed that they did. The next guy who tries that is going to get punched right in the nose."
"Don't bother me with your troubles," the final patron responds. "Just give me my change and I'll be on my way."
A man walked in to a bar after a long day at work. As he began to drink his beer, he heard a voice say seductively
"You've got great hair!" The man looked around but couldn't see where the voice was coming from, so he went
back to his beer. A minute later, he heard the same soft voice say "You're a handsome man!" The man looked
around, but still couldn't see where the voice was coming from. When he went back to his beer, the voice said
again "What a stud you are!" The man was so baffled by this that he asked the bartender what was going on. The
bartender said "Oh, it's the nuts--they're complimentary."
One night, a police officer was stalking out a particularly rowdy bar waiting to catch any drunk drivers. At closing
time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and try his keys on five different cars before he
found his. Then, sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. Everyone left the bar and
drove off. Finally, he started his engine and began to pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He
stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered the Breathalyser test. The results showed a reading of 0.0.
The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be. The driver replied, "Tonight, I'm the Designated
Decoy."
Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the
University of Windsor, "And what starting salary are you looking for?" The engineer replies, "In the region of
$125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a
package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to
50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?" The engineer sits up straight and
says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it!”
A doctor reaches into his smock to get a pen to write a prescription and pulls out a rectal thermometer. "Oh, damn
it," he proclaims, "Some asshole has my pen!"
PRESIDENT’S REPORT JANUARY 2019
Another Christmas has come and gone! Looking back, it was a very good year both personally and at the
Legion.
2019 will bring highs and lows as does every year.
I am looking forward to the new foyer in the main lounge. It is scheduled to be installed in mid February to
keep the cold winter weather outdoors and significantly reduce the cold gusts of air when the outer door is
opened. I am looking forward to the accessible entries it will have thereby making it easier for wheelchairs to
enter our building from the rear parking lot. I would like to thank the Windsor Essex Community Foundation
for their $5,000 grant towards this project.
Community Safety Net. At the November membership meeting Jeff Morrell asked if we would be supporting
the Community Safety Net again this year. It was deferred to get more information and have a discussion with
the Windsor Police Services (WPS) to see if they would use the booklet “Drug Safety: Smart Choices for
Life” in their VIP program. Tim Murphy and Dave Pickford, both retirees of the WPS, contacted Lauren
Brisco, WPS Community Services, who has endorsed this tool to resist illegal drug use. The book also offers
parents practical ideas to raise drug-free children. https://www.communitysafetynet.com/
Membership Meeting Attendance Draw. It was suggested after the December executive meeting that we
should institute an attendance draw at the Membership meetings to encourage member participation. After a
couple weeks of thought I will bring it to the membership. Motion to be made that a $50 draw be held at each
Membership Meeting. If the member has not signed in for the meeting the money stays in the pot for the next
month’s meeting, ie: $50 becomes $100 the second month if no winner the first month, $100 becomes $150 if
no winner the second month…
The Dec 15th dinner dance was enjoyed by all who attended. The band and food were terrific!
Unfortunately, this event attracted less than 50 people, so we lost money.
That said we have cancelled our Chili Cookoff scheduled for January 26th and the Valentines Dinner dance as
we have booked a wedding on February 9th.
We will try again on April 27with a dinner dance featuring the Mojo Wailers. WE need you
to support this event so buy your tickets early!
Scenario: You have been asked to be executor or power of attorney for a family member or friend.
Out of respect you say yes. What is involved? What is probate? What is a Power of Attorney?
At 1:30pm, on Monday January 14th, Andy Chan, an independent Insurance and Financial Services adviser,
will present an insider’s perspective.
Come early to get a seat as I expect this will be a popular topic!
On behalf of the Branch Executive Team we wish
you and your families a Healthy & Happy New Year!
Tom Friesen
President
Metropolitan Branch 594

Children's Christmas Party 2018 review.
Our children's Christmas Party was held on December 9th 2018 for member's children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thirty-seven children and fifty-two adults attended.
The festivities started at 11:00 a.m. with a magnificent magic show performed by “Magic &
Make Believe” brothers Lyall and Paul Cousins.
Included in their performance were the disappearance of rabbits and doves, unlimited ribbons
pulled from their mouths and a machine that could turn a head completely around safely. A
wonderful hour filled with laughter and smiles.
Doughnuts, coffee and juices were served.
A visit by Elsa the Snow Queen brought out more excitement from the crowd, especially the
little girls.
Also on hand was Laurie Bradbury who used her artistic flair to paint images on the faces of
the little ones.
Pizza was served to the crowd at 12:00.
New to our annual party was Zoology who brought in several types of animals from a lop-
eared rabbit, a pair of ferrets, a chinchilla and a goat named Dolly. The children had a great
time petting and holding and asking questions about the animals.
Our final guest was Santa (aka Gary Brooks) who doled out gifts to the children present with
the help of a few elves. Canned goods were collected and will be donated to the LaSalle Food
Bank.
Thanks to all who attended, and we wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2019.

and Donna.
