TRANSPORT Mini-ster Jeff Radebe hasexpressed satis-faction at theprogress made on a
number of Durban’s transportprojects.
Radebe was in the cityrecently to inspect work onthe Bridge City project inInanda.
Bridge City is a multi-billionurban renewal residentialproject that includes anunderground railway station.
He said efforts to provideintegrated transport wouldhelp eThekwini realise itseconomic potential.
“The Bridge City develop-ment will give KwaMashu,Inanda, Ntuzuma and Phoe-nix a facelift, and it bringsopportunities for the peopleof this area,” Radebe said.
The minister said hisdepartment would ensure theproject was complementedby a sound transport system.
“I am pleased to announcethat through South AfricanRail Commuter Corporation,more than R350-million willbe invested in the under-ground Bridge City stationand the rail extension that will
serve 40 000 commuters aday and handle 14 000passengers in peak hours.”
He said more than R350-million was being invested onthe new roads, road upgradesand public amenities withinand surrounding Bridge City.
A R750-million shoppingmall is also on the cards forthe area.
Radebe, accompanied byKwaZulu-Natal TransportMEC, Bheki Cele, and MayorObed Mlaba, later visited LaMercy, where Radebe laun-ched a road improvementproject for the R102.
The road will be a gatewayto the new airport now beingbuilt in the area.
Cele said the airport wouldcreate about 6 000 jobs.
He said his departmentwould be spending aboutR400-million on improvingroads leading to the airport.
The new airport, which willreplace the Durban Inter-national Airport, is expectedto be ready by May 2010, intime for the World Cup.
The 3 700m runways willaccommodate the latestaircraft, including the A380Airbus, and can be extendedto 4 000m.

THE City has released itssupplementary valuation roll.
City Manager MichaelSutcliffe has encouragedproperty owners to inspectthe roll to be sure theirproperties were listed, or thatthey were satisfied with thevalues placed on theirproperties.
The supplementary roll canbe viewed at the Office of the
City Manager, Valuation Roll,13th floor, 75 Dr Langali-balele (Winder) Street, atSizakala customer centres oron the City’s website,www.durban.gov.za .
Owners should object ifthey feel that their propertieshave been under or overvalued.
Objections are lodged byfilling out forms, availablefrom the above addresses andsubmitting it, and anysupporting documents, to
the Office of the CityManager, Valuation Roll, 13thfloor, 75 Dr Langalibalele(Winder) Street.
After the objection islodged, it will be taken up bythe relevant valuer, who willreview the valuation and lookat any other informationprovided by the owner.
The owner will be informedin writing of the outcome. Ifthere is still an objection, itwill be referred to an AppealBoard, a tribunal appointed
by the provincial govern-ment. Those who havesubmitted an objectionshould follow the objectionoutcome letter and ignore therates assessments.
Religious organisationsshould ignore the ratesassessments as they areexempt. Only where theyhave commercial activity onthe property are they liablefor rates.

GOOD news for Durban artlovers is that the popularArts Bus is back, thanks topublic demand.
The bus runs everySaturday until 6 Decemberand visits seven differentgalleries in one day.
The public can park their
cars in Glenwood and hopon the specially-decorated,free bus at the KZNSAGallery several times a day.
The Art Bus is part of theMoveable Arts Feast, acampaign to encourage thepublic to visit Durban’smany galleries and is hostedby the Visual Arts Associa-tion of SA, KZN as part of the
Celebrate Durban season.The galleries are ArtSpace
Durban in Umgeni Road;African Art Centre in FloridaRoad; Durban Art Gallery atthe City Hall; KZNSA Galleryin Glenwood; DUT Gallery atthe DUT campus; BATCentre at the harbour; andthe Kizo Art Gallery inGateway, Umhlanga.
