ebola fears after death in donegal

by BriAn huTTOnDOCTORS suspect a man found dead in Donegal was infected with the deadly ebola virus while working in Africa.

The suspected victim was named lo-cally as father of one Dessie Quinn.

Mr Quinn, 43, is thought to have been living with his partner in Dublin but was visiting his family in the Doorin area, outside Mountcharles, when he was taken ill.

Neighbours said the man may have been receiving treatment for suspect-ed malaria after returing from Sierra Leone when he died.

However, it is not thought he was an in-patient at any medical facility.

The Health Service Executive would only say the remains of a per-son who recently returned from an area of Africa hit by the ebola out-break were found in Co Donegal yes-terday.

‘Until a diagnosis is confirmed, and as a precautionary measure, the indi-

vidual’s remains will stay in the mor-tuary pending the laboratory results expected late today,’ a HSE spokes-man said.

One local man who knew the sus-pected victim said he was talking to him last week.

‘I met him at the festival in Mountcharles last Friday,’ he said.

‘He was just home and was in Don-egal since he came back from Sierra Leone. Everyone knew him.

‘He was great company. He was a very nice fella.’

The suspected victim’s body has been transferred to Letterkenny Gen-eral Hospital where precautionary measures have been put in place.

However, the risk of transmission of the disease is considered to be ‘extremely low’.

UP TO 500 jobs on a massive motorway project should all go to Irish workers, not to ‘foreigners’.

That’s the view of Galway county councillor Michael Fahy, who warned that if construction jobs on the €550million Gort to Tuam motorway were to go to non-Irish

nationals, the money would ‘simply leave the country’.

Work on the massive M17/M18 project is expected to get under way early next year and Cllr Fahy

(pictured) said he wanted the jobs to go to ‘local Irish people and local Irish young men so that some might be able to come back from Australia, from Canada, England and other countries’.

A spokesperson for the Immigrant Council of Ireland described Cllr Fahy’s comments as ‘offensive and unacceptable,’ adding: ‘Some 17 per cent of those who call Ireland home were born in another country and are making a positive contribution to the economic contribution to the economic contribution to the economic recovery. We would ask Cllr Fahy to withdraw his remarks.’

Rail customers advised to make alternative plans

COMMUTERS and Gaelic football fans are being advised to make alternative trav-el arrangements ahead of planned strikes at Irish Rail on Sunday and Monday.

The two-day work stoppage will mean no trains will operate in the country for August 24 and 25, disrupting travel to Sunday’s All-Ireland Football semi-final between Kerry and Mayo.

Dublin Bus, Luas and Bus Éireann will operate as normal.

The National Transport Authority con-firmed the train company will lose €500,000 in State funding if this weekend’s stoppage takes place, while up to €1.2m is in jeop-ardy if all five days go ahead. An NTA spokeswoman said it would withhold the funding as Irish Rail is ‘not providing the service’ if there’s a strike.

The industrial action follows an ongo-ing dispute between Irish Rail and un-ions Siptu and the National Bus and Rail Union, who have refused to agree on temporary pay cuts for staff that would see a 1.7 per cent reduction for staff earn-ing €56,000 or less, and up to 6.1 per cent from those earning over €100,000.

It was also confirmed that Irish Rail CEO David Franks will return home from holiday after it was revealed he would be in Mauritius during the strike.

Former taoiseach Albert rey-nolds has been remembered as a courageous peacemaker, after he died following a long illness.

Taoiseach enda Kenny led tributes to the 81-year-old, who had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, for the risks he took to secure the peace process in Northern Ireland and the energy and drive he brought to economic growth in his roles as minister for industry and finance.

President michael D Higgins said mr reynolds was a dynamic minis-ter and a courageous leader. ‘It is ap-propriate that we pay tribute to his significant contribution to our con-temporary society,’ he added.

major, who signed the 1993 Down-ing Street Declaration with mr rey-nolds, that paved the way for the Good Friday Agreement, described mr reynolds as ‘a friend he cher-ished and will miss’ and a politician deserving of his place in history. mr major said, the Irish leader ‘took risks to deliver a future for Ireland that many thought was impossible’.

Born in 1932 in rooskey, Co ros-common, mr reynolds was a show-band promoter before being elected to the Dáil in 1977 as a Fianna Fáil TD. He went on to become Taoi-seach in February 1992 in two coali-tion governments.

He served less than three years and, after controversies, includ-ing the X case and the Beef Tri-bunal, the mishandling of the ex-tradition of paedophile priest Brendan Smyth brought his time at the top to an end.

Northern Ireland Deputy First min-ister martin mcGuinness, former taoiseach John Bruton and Fianna Fáil leader micheál martin were among those who praised mr rey-nolds for his courage and crucial role in the peace process.

Bertie Ahern, who succeeded mr reynolds as party leader in 1994, said his predecessor’s role was a critical one in the road to peace.

‘If there hadn’t have been a Down-ing Street Declaration, I don’t think there would have been [an IrA] ceasefire in the first place,’ he said.

In a landmark symbolic gesture, mr reynolds instigated a public handshake between mr Adams and former SDLP leader John Hume fol-lowing talks in Government Build-ings in Dublin in 1994.

Former US president Bill Clinton said the world owes mr reynolds ‘a profound debt of gratitude’. He add-ed: ‘I will always be grateful for his encouragement, advice, and support in the peace process.’

A HOSTAGE who was held alongside James Foley by the Islamic State be-lieves he knows the identity of the Brit-ish jihadi who beheaded him.

Didier François was captured by the extremist group and locked up for seven months with his fellow journalist.

When asked yesterday whether he rec-ognised the killer in the murder video – nicknamed ‘John’ – the Frenchman re-plied: ‘Recognised is a very big word. I see roughly who it is.’

The 53-year-old said he was warned not to speak out by the IS after they re-leased him in April, or they would harm their remaining hostages – Mr Foley and fellow American reporter Steven Sotloff.

He said he was told: ‘If you make pub-lic the fact they are being held or that you were together, reprisals will follow against them’. Mr François added: ‘Their exact words were, “They’ll be punished”.’

He was eventually freed by the group after the French government reportedly paid a ransom to the organisation.

And last night it emerged the Islamic State had demanded €100million for Mr Foley’s release. The demands, under-stood to have been issued late last year, were sent in emails to the journalist’s family in New Hampshire.

During his time in captivity, Mr Foley was singled out for beatings after his cap-tors found his laptop pictures of his broth-er, who works for the US Air Force.

He was also subjected to mock execu-

tions, including one in which he was ‘crucified against a wall’, Mr François revealed. Paying tribute to his fellow captive, the Frenchman said: ‘He was an extraordinary boy – an extremely friend-ly companion, very solid.’

Meanwhile, the US Air Force carried out six more strikes on Islamic State fighters yesterday as they gave support to Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

A barrage from above helped troops to push the militants away from the Mosul Dam. The US is worried IS might blow up the dam, setting loose a tide of water that would flood parts of Baghdad.

The latest attacks bring the total to 80 to have taken place since the US got involved in the conflict.

HAMAS finally claimed responsibility for the kidnap and murder of three Israeli teens that sparked the Gaza crisis, as three of its senior commanders were killed in an Israeli air strike yesterday.

Senior official Salah Arouri told a news conference in Turkey the teens were killed to spark a broader Palestinian uprising.

A four-storey house was levelled in the attack in the southern Gazan town of Rafah that killed the three Hamas commanders.

The men played a major role in expanding Hamas’ military capabilities in recent years, including digging border attack tunnels, training fighters and smuggling arms, Israel said. A military spokesman said the attack sent a ‘clear message that we will strike those that have terrorised our communities, towns and

cities and we will succeed in restoring security to the state of Israel’.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the ‘superior intelligence’ of the Shin Bet security service and the military’s ‘precise execution’ of the attack. However, three others died in the 3am raid which killed Mohammed Abu Shamaleh (pictured), Raed Attar and Mohammed Barhoum.

They included the parents of Issam Younis, the director of a leading Gaza human rights organisation, who lived in a neighbouring property.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said Israel ‘will not

succeed in breaking the will of our people or weaken the resistance’, and that it would ‘pay the price’.

Since the Gaza war erupted six weeks ago, more than

2,000 have died in Palestine, with 67

deaths on the Israeli side.

US law chief: I have been victimised tooI KNOW why black people don’t trust the police, America’s top law enforce-ment officer said yesterday as he tried to defuse tensions after the shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri.

Eric Holder, the first African-Amer-ican to serve as attorney general, told community leaders in Ferguson he had experienced the frustration of being stopped and searched.

He said he had once been on his way to a cinema when an officer in a squad car flashed his lights and yelled: ‘Where are you going, hold it!’ On two other occasions, officers accused him of speeding before searching his

car – looking in the boot and under the seats. ‘I remember how humiliat-ing that was and how angry I was and the impact it had on me,’ he said.

Mr Holder said he hoped his visit would have a ‘calming’ effect on Ferguson, where the killing of 18-

year-old Mr Brown by white police-man Darren Wilson has stirred racial tension. There were signs efforts to engage with protesters were working as six arrests were reported on Wednes-day, down from 47 on Tuesday.

But trouble erupted in New York City where police took a man into custody during a demonstration held to de-nounce Mr Brown’s death.

A grand jury yesterday began hear-ing evidence before deciding whether Mr Wilson should be charged.

The protesters want St Louis prose-cutor Bob McCulloch to be taken off the case because his policeman father was killed while responding to a call involving a black suspect.

US doctor hails ebola cure as a ‘miracle’A DOCTOR who spent more than a week fighting for his life after contracting the deadly ebola virus has hailed his recovery as a ‘miracle’.

Dr Kent Brantly was discharged yesterday from Emory University Hospital in Georgia, USA, where he was flown for treatment after falling ill in Liberia last month. ‘Today is a miraculous day,’ he said.

‘I woke up feeling under the weather, then my life took an unexpected turn.

‘I never imagined I would be in this position.’The death toll from the ebola outbreak now stands at

more than 1,200 but Dr Brantly and fellow US aid worker Nancy Writebol, who was discharged on Tuesday, were treated with the trial drug ZMapp.

I just want to write in and regis-ter my overwhelming disappoint-ment with the standard of graffiti at Lansdowne Road. the draw-ings are really rubbish. there is

no depth, contrast, imagination nor complexity to the scrawls. the ambi-tion for the black drawing at the far end of the stadium seemed to be ‘how high can I reach’.

this is our national stadium lads, I mean you want something that is bold and dramatic, that leaps out at you in a 3D sort of way.

We have the Welsh, scots, English and the French calling in here to play rugby. I mean what do you think the French are going to say when they see ‘ANtO’ in black letters on the side of our stadium. I’ll tell you: ‘Buff Michel, I thought these Irish descended from Celts who drew cave pictures of great art with fine textures.’

It’s embarrassing lads. You need to practise in private and ask yourselves do I have a natural aptitude for graffiti, or should I stick to shop-lifting? I am afraid I’m at that age where if the standard of graffiti is not good

then I deem it to be defacing property.Any feckin’ eejit can spray their tag.

Harry tries a love spell

What if DanielRadcliffe played thelead in an Americanromantic comedy?That’s the punt takenby the makers of thisfilm, and despite adecent script it hasn’treally paid off. Theformer Harry Potter star plays Wallace, a Brit abroadin Toronto who falls for a localgirl called Chantry (Zoe Kazan).Problem is, she has a long-term boyfriend (Rafe Spall). Keepinghis romantic feelings to himself, Wallace enters the friend zoneand various awkward challengesensue at drunken parties andtrips away with their pals. WhileKazan does the kooky thing wellenough, Radcliffe looks ill at

ease playing the stammering,sensitive Brit. He’s proved himself an increasingly mature dramatic actor both on stageand on film, not least in lastyear’s Kill Your Darlings. Butcomedy timing doesn’t seem to be his thing. It’s left to the bestfriends (Mackenzie Davis andAdam Driver) to entertain –so at least the sideshow isamusing, if not the main act.

scarlett Johansson is no stranger to kick-ass roles: only recently she played a dangerously se-ductive alien in Under the

Skin. luc Besson’s new actioner casts her as the titular character, a party girl who evolves into a weird-ly powerful creature thanks to some seriously heavy-duty drugs.

american lucy is living in tai-wan when her new boyfriend forces her to deliver a suitcase to a Korean gangster. Kidnapped, she wakes up with a fresh scar and a choice: act as a drug mule or her family dies.

It seems there’s no way out – until the drug bag planted inside her bursts. Suddenly, lucy is filled with a new substance that helps her use untapped parts of her brain. Not only can she outwit her captors and escape but she can track the drug lords as well as a professor (Mor-gan Freeman), who’s been research-ing this kind of brain activity.

Sounds a bit bonkers? Well, it is. this is limitless meets crank meets a touch of cloud atlas, with a bit more Besson for good measure. this guy brought us la Femme Nikita and the Fifth element – not known for his subtlety but loved for his in-your-face action.

the first act has plenty of bang for your buck: it’s darkly funny watch-ing lucy swiftly strategise and take over technology with the power of her mind. there’s travel, fast cars and one-liners.

title cards tell us how much brain power lucy is harnessing: 20 per cent, 30 per cent, 40 per cent… the higher it gets, the more ridiculous and dumbed down it all seems. Her powers seem increasingly prepos-terous, while Morgan and his chums spout pseudo scientific theory as if talking to 12-year-olds. Flashbacks to the prehistoric age are original but seem at odds with the action-thriller tone.

Fans after a typical Besson movie should find plenty to enjoy here; those after a thriller about the power of the brain might want to rent limitless. Anna smith

God heLp the GIrL (15)Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch writes and directs this modern-day musical about a trio of young people who start a band in Scotland. Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) plays an anorexic singer who befriends a couple of students (Skins actors Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray). Heartfelt and sweet.

Remember those old-school disaster movies where a group of townsfolk gather together to survive against the odds? This US tornado movie has plenty in common with them, including stereotypical characters and dialogue. But it also features up-to-the-minute visual effects – and what a difference that makes.

Richard Armitage stars as Gary,

a frowny vice principal. As he and his school prepare for graduation, a group of professional storm chasers head their way, keen to capture an incoming tornado on camera.

Naturally, among their number is an attractive woman (Prison Break’s Sarah Wayne Callies) and a self-serving grouch, Pete (Matt Walsh). As the storm chasers close in, so does the mega-storm and everyone’s whipped up into a frenzy, if not a tornado itself.

No disaster movie cliché is left unturned – think last-minute rescues, self-sacrifices and potential lovers facing the end. But despite the wooden dialogue, it’s gripping stuff – even if you can

guess the outcome. The tornado itself is the star,

whirling and throwing vehicles and buildings into the air with menace.

A formulaic but fun big-screen experience.

In this pilot episode, a prequel to the John Thaw series, Shaun Evans plays a young Inspector Morse, on the hunt for a missing schoolgirl. The detective is sidetracked by burgled gas meters and a string of post office robberies as DC Endeavour Morse and DI Thursday’s newly forged relationship is tested to the breaking point.

RTÉ2, 10.35pmDaryl (Norman Reedus) and Beth (Emily Kinney) are the only characters to feature in tonight’s instalment of the post-apocalyptic horror series based on the Robert Kirkman comics. The pair venture into the woods where they set up camp, but a hankering for some booze leads Beth and a reluctant Daryl to a golf club, where they find a stash of alcohol. Schnapps anyone?

precious BBC2, 11.05pm

Gabourey Sidibe makes her film debut here as Precious Jones, an overweight, illiterate teen abused by her parents. She is sent to a special school where she begins to feel more hopeful about life. The film was acclaimed on its 2009 release thanks to strong lead performances and director Lee Daniels’ innovative approach to storytelling.

With the first world war being widely commemorated and dissected this summer, staging George Bernard

Shaw’s play about England on the eve of the conflict would seem a timely choice.

And Róisín McBrinn’s production is a competent one that coveys a respect and sensitivity to Shaw’s original, without any recourse to gimmicks. the problem is that Shaw’s original, in this case, is a lengthy, unwieldy work (with a running time of approximately three hours) that groans under the weight of its own worthiness.

Shaw has much to say about the state of England in 1914, but you have to wonder if he could not find a more elegant, devastating way to say it than in this dramatic behemoth.

Unsurprisingly, it is one of Shaw’s lesser performed works – it compares poorly with, for instance, Major Barbara, also produced at the Abbey earlier this year, which made serious social comment in a much, much pithier form.

heartbreak house begins with a series of characters arriving at Captain Shotover’s chaotic country home, many of whom fail to

recognise each other – a belaboured attempt to convey the instability of a dysfunctional pre-war England.

Despite a beginning that already seems overburdened with symbolism, the play then develops into what seems more like a Wildean farce of mistaken identities and reversals of lifelong assumptions, salted with the occasional aphorism.

the young Ellie (Lisa Dwyer hogg), engaged to a middle-aged industrialist Alfred Mangan, arrives to discover that the man she is really in love with is married to her friend hesione hushabye (an excellent Kathy Kiera Clarke), the very woman who is trying to persuade her to end her unromantic but financially prudent engagement.

this strand of the play involves much debate about marriage as women’s main life strategy in a time when there were no other career options – a fascinating subject, yet the editorialising manages to smother any sense of drama.

this is not the fault of the cast, who give fine performances – particularly Mark Lambert as the breezily mad Captain Shotover and Don Wycherley as Mangan, a capitalist with a strangely strangulated

(indeed almost robotic) vocal delivery. But despite their best efforts, there is

something utterly unsatisfying about heartbreak house, a politically engaged play that manages to be unfortunately unengaging as a piece of theatre.

the final 30 minutes are particularly dense with speeches – you could sense the first night audience flagging – i don’t think i’ve ever seen a more firmly seated ovation when the end finally came. Ryanair launches nine new routes from the capital

RYANAIR has introduced nine new routes from Dublin.

The airline has extended its Dublin winter schedule for this year, includ-ing routes to Basel, Brussels-Zaven-tem, Bucharest, Cologne, Glasgow, Lisbon, Marrakech, Nice and Prague.

That brings Ryanair routes from the capital to 60. There will also be in-creased flights on 21 existing routes to and from Dublin Airport

The Dublin to Brussels-Zaventem route will operate three times daily from October, a complement to the Dublin to Brussels-Charleroi route.

An additional 850,000 new Ryanair customers per year will bring its Dub-lin passenger numbers up to 8.4mil-lion per annum in total.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said: ‘Our nine new Dublin winter routes with multiple daily frequencies are ideal for business customers.’

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of-ficer of Tourism Ireland, said: ‘To-day’s announcement is more good news for tourism to Ireland this year.

‘We already work very closely with Ryanair and we look forward to co-operating with them to maximise the promotion of this new service to Dublin.

‘As an island, the importance of convenient, direct, non-stop flights cannot be overstated – they are abso-lutely critical to achieving growth in visitor numbers.’

FACEBOOK has been given four weeks to reply to a class action over online privacy.

A court in Vienna has told campaigners behind the lawsuit they have passed the first step in their David v Goliath battle against the social network. Lawyers leading the challenge revealed 25,000 users from

outside the US and Canada have signed up to support the case and another 35,000 have also registered support, and are claiming €500 damages per supporter for alleged data protection violations by the social media giant.

The action is being taken against the Irish subsidiary of the New York-listed company owned by Mark Zuckerberg (pictured) for tracking internet users’ activity on external sites and its analysis of users through ‘big data’ systems.

Facebook has four weeks to reply but can ask for an extension.

The world number one came into the first leg of the four-tournament FedEx Cup play-offs as a hot favourite following victories at the Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and US PGA Championship. One-man show won’t see kerry beat Mayo

Boss Eamon Fitzmaurice insists All-Ireland title hopefuls Kerry don’t view James o’Donoghue as their new Colm Cooper.

Kerry face Mayo in sunday’s first semi-final, a year on from when Cooper gave one of the great Croke Park displays in their epic clash with Dublin.

o’Donoghue is the man the King-dom will look to for inspiration this time around as the ‘Gooch’ remains sidelined with cruciate trouble.

All-star o’Donoghue has done a terrific job of leading Kerry so far with ten points in the Munster final and 1-5 against Galway last time out.

But Fitzmaurice (pictured) said there’s no such thing as a like

for like swap when it comes to the gifted ‘Gooch’ and

insisted everyone has to chip in if

they’re to beat Mayo.

‘James has taken on a bit of a leadership mantle but I’m sure that if Colm was there then James would still be playing the same way,’ said Fitz-maurice. ‘I don’t think anyone views it as one replacing the other.

‘If James had Colm firing in bullets to him, he could only benefit. so I don’t think it’s as easy as calling one a replacement. Colm was al-

ways seen as the talisman up front for Kerry and James is definitely filling that role in terms of being a talisman for us this year but they are different players in a lot of ways. The bottom line is you need everyone on fire to beat a side like Mayo.’

IaIn Moody’s resignation could further damage Crystal Palace’s bid for Premier League stability, according to the club’s caretaker manager Keith Millen, writes Cyrus Pundole.

Moody resigned as Palace’s sporting direc-tor yesterday, amid allegations of sexism and homophobia against him and Malky Mackay during their time at Cardiff.

The Football association has confirmed an investigation into a dossier of allegations submitted to the governing body by Cardiff City bosses.

Mackay was all set to be appointed Tony Pulis’ successor at Palace, until news of the Fa investigation broke.

Millen admitted Moody’s departure could unsettle Palace further, as the club seeks a replacement for Pulis, who left on the eve of the season.

‘Iain was brought in to do a job to recruit and scout players, and Iain was experienced at that job,’ said Millen, admitting Moody’s departure leaves a chasm at selhurst Park. ‘The chairman will now have to look at that situation, to see whether he wants to bring someone in.’

Palace’s managerial search is back to square one after Mackay was ruled out, with Chris Hughton now among the contenders.

Republic of ireland boss Martin O’Neill sprang no surprises when he named a provisional squad for his first competitive game in charge.
