The Films oF Gerard malanGa6 @ 7PMJoin celebrated photographer, film-maker, and poet Gerard malanga, named by the new York Times as andy Warhol’s “most important associate” before and during the legendary Factory scene, for the screening of three early and rare shorts. Previously featured at the 2005 Viennale and the Toronto Film Festival, these films capture the experimental spirit of their moment, as malanga turns the camera back on Warhol, memorializes his own days in nYC, and searches for his poetic self through the love of his muse. in partnership with the alberta institute for american studies.Gerard Malanga will be in attendance for an intro and Q & A.

Andy Warhol: Portraits of the Artist as a Young ManUSA 1965, 21 min, Silent, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malangain the style of the Warhol/malanga collabo-ration of screen Tests, malanga turns the camera on Warhol’s still-portrait, all shot at the Factory on different days, in a series of 7 individual studies.

The Filmmaker Records a Portion of His Life in the Month of August USA 1968, 19 min, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malangain 1968, without a camera or the means to make a movie, malanga’s mentor and friend, the filmmaker, marie menken, gave him an 8mm Keystone camera and said, “Gerard, go out and make a movie!” The result was a filmic diary in the style of the French scopitone music promotionals of the mid-1960s.

In Search of the Miraculous USA 1967, 29 min, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malangamalanga’s most ambitious film to date, partly inspired stylistically after luchino Visconti’s movie, senso (1954). it deals with an unrequited relationship, thus documenting and preserving even the most remote and minute details of the muse’s life and existence. it is metaphorically a search for what “resists memory.”

The rivalries, alliances politics and intrigues surrounding the sport put ancient values of honor and integrity head-to-head with ego-driven hunger for power and wealth

Patti Smith: Dream of LifeUSA 2008, 109 min, Digital, Dir: Steven Sebring5 @ 7PMFilmmaker steven sebring directs this documentary about legendary musician Patti smith, surveying her life, her career, and the philosophical and spiritual themes that have remained so potent in her work. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devas-tating and uplifting, The impossible is a journey to the core of the human heart.

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters Global Visions EncoreUSA 2012, 78 min, Digital, Dir: Ben Shapiro24 @ 1PM, 25 @ 7PM, 26 @ 9:15PM an acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium. his meticulously composed, large-scale images are stunning narratives of small-town american life - moviescapes crystallized into a single frame. While the photographs are staged with crews that rival many feature film productions, Crewdson takes inspiration as much from his own dreams and fantasies as the worlds of alfred hitchcock, david lynch, edward hopper and diane arbus. shot over a decade with unprecedented access, the film beautifully bares the artist’s process - and it’s as mesmerizing and riveting as the images themselves.

2013 Fly Fishing Film Festival2013, 110 min, Digital, Dir: Various24 @ 3PMThe international Fly Fishing Film Festival, iF4 for short, consists of a collection of short and feature length films produced by professional and amateur filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing. iF4 is making many stops in Canada and the Usa in 2013 – come out and see what all of the buzz is about

Altered StatesUSA 1980, 107 min, Digital, Dir: ken Russell26 @ 7PMin his screen debut, William hurt plays eddie Jessop, a scientist engaged in a series of sensory deprivation and psychedelic experiments, hell bent on discovering the essence of human existence and the “ultimate truth”, who finds himself unlocking his own genetic structure and reverting to pre-human state. The last film written by Paddy Chayesfky, and British director Ken russell’s only foray into science-fiction, altered states is a head-trip through evolutions back door, overflowing with hallucinatory and religious imagery, as well as a moving look at a marriage pushed to the brink by intellectual obsession.

Meet the Fokkens (ouwehoeren) Global Visions EncoreNetherlands 2011, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Gabrielle Provaas, Ron Schroder, Dutch w/ subtitles24 @ 9:15PM, 25 @ 9PM meet louise and martine Fokkens: 69-year-old identical twins who have worked as prostitutes in amsterdam’s red light district for over 50 years. louise is newly retired due to arthritis (“i couldn’t get one leg over the other”), but martine carries on, unable to support herself on a state pension. Between explicit scenes of her daily grind, she and louise stroll the city in matching outfits, recounting hilariously ribald stories from a lifetime of sex work. an immensely affectionate portrait of two women who have seen and done everything (and everyone), meet the Fokkens is a rollicking and revealing look at the world’s oldest profession in the 21st century.

CUlT Cinema///a monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff noel.

Dr ZhivagoUSA/ Italy 1965, 197 min, Digital, Dir: David Lean27 @ 7PMBreathtaking landscapes, multiple story arcs covering decades, grand historical themes, 197 minutes of emotional devastation – films don’t get much bigger than this. Based on Boris Pasternak’s famous novel, it is a long and complex journey through the chaos of the First World War and the russian revolution, but at its heart it remains first and foremost a love story. When the passion between lara (Julie Christie) and Yuri (omar sharif), unexpressed for years (an aching two hours in movie time!), is eventually surrendered to, the effect is of a whole nation finally breathing out. West of Memphis New Zealand/ USA 2012, 147 min, Digital, Dir: Amy Berg29 @ 6:45PM, 30 @ 4PM, 30 @ 9:30PM, 31 @ 8:45PM, APR 1 @ 1PM,West of memphis is an examination of a failure of justice in arkansas. The documentary tells the hitherto unknown story behind an extraor-dinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light. Told and made by those who lived it, the filmmakers’ unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense, allows the film to show the investigation, research and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before; revealing shocking and disturbing new information about a case that still haunts the american south.

Miami ConnectionUSA 1987, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Y.k. kim, Woo-Sang Par29 @ 11PM, APRIL 1 @ 4PMThe year is 1987. motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. multi-national martial arts rock band dragon sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song “against the ninja,” mark (kung-fu master/inspirational speaker Y.K. Kim) and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug world’s smelliest underbelly. it’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but dragon sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”...and the entire miami ConneCTion!!!

Mommie DearestUSA 1981, 129 min, Digital, Dir: Frank Perry28 @ 9:30PMThis 80s camp classic features Faye “she’s my sister (slap) she’s my daughter” dunaway as Joan Crawford, the powerful and glamorous Golden age actress who personally destroyed the wire hanger industry. Based upon the questionably credible autobiography of Christina Crawford, this film has caused dave and Jeff to mysteriously remember abuse suffered at the hands of … sob ... films like this. Wire hangers Forbidden!

miYazaKi and sTUdio GhiBli ToUr: ParT 3our studio Ghibli tour picks up again with three more beautifully animated films from Japan’s most beloved film institution: another fantasy classic from master hayao miyazaki, the fanciful spiritual sequel to last month’s Whisper of the heart, and a rarely seen gem. Venturing further into the Ghibli back catalogue, we invite you to join us as we continue to explore new facets and motifs of such a rich cinematic body of work.

Castle in the SkyJapan 1986, 126 min, 35mm, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese w/ English Subtitles28 @ 7PM, 31 @ 1:30PMlong ago, mankind took to the skies in marvel-ous flying cities, but after a mysterious catastro-phe only one remained: laputa. hidden inside of a continual thunderstorm, the eponymous castle in the sky was thought lost until Princess sheeta (voiced by Keiko Yokozawa) and her new friend Pazu (voiced by mayumi Tanaka) arrive there after a bout with air pirates. once they arrive, they begin to uncover the mystery of why this one city remains. another one of studio Ghibli’s earliest successes, Castle in the sky has all of the characteristic tropes of the classic miyazaki film: a strong princess, fascinating aeronautical engineering, and strange creatures.

The Cat ReturnsJapan 2002, 75 min, 35mm, Dir: Hiroyuki Morita, English dubbed29 @ 9:30PM, 30 @ 2:15PM, APRIL 1 @ 7PM, Today just became really bizarre for student haru Yoshioka (voiced by anne hathaway); saving a cat from being run over by a delivery truck was one thing, but now it turns out that the cat in question is the Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and haru is to be married to him! But she hasn’t even had a boyfriend yet...and she’s a human; how is that even supposed to WorK? and why are her ears becoming so furry and pointed? Featuring the return of the stylish, top-hatted feline Baron von Gikkingen (The Princess Bride’s Cary elwes), The Cat returns feels like the funny and adventurous novel started by the main character of studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the heart.

ocean WavesJapan 1993, 72 min, 35mm, Dir: Tomomi Mochizuki, Japanese w/ English subtitles29 @ 2PM, 31 @ 7PM, While waiting at the train station, Taku morisaki (voiced by nobuo Tobita) catches sight of a familiar young woman. This chance encounter takes his memories back to high school, when his best friend Yutaka (voiced by Toshihko seki) introduced him to a beautiful transfer student from Tokyo: rikako. Both friends vie for the affections of the gorgeous new girl, whose pretty appearance hides a conceited, troublesome and melancholic character. The love triangle escalates as rumors circulate around the school and the boys’ friendship becomes strained. rarely seen outside of Japan, ocean Waves is the first Ghibli film directed by someone other than the studio founders. adapted from saeko himuro’s best-selling novel, the film captures the teenage drama with the same artistry and attention to detail one expects from Ghibli’s acclaimed animation team.
