Metro Woodcarving Weekend Class Description – 2017

A. Kolrosing Maura Corey Cloquet, MNTwo Kolrosed projects; one on practice board, the other on the lid of a Nordic style bowlor round plate. Design choices will be provided. History of Kolrosing: a description of allsupplies needed; fundamentals of design and pattern application; a step-by-step tutorial ofthe complete Kolrosing process and aspect of combining additional art mediums. Cost formaterials: $13.00 - $15.00. Materials needed to purchase prior to attending workshop:Kolrosing knife: $27.00: Pinewoodforge.com. Additional materials participant may wantto bring from home: tracing paper, graphite transfer paper, scotch tape, eraser, pencil,stylus, clipboard, acrylic paints, paintbrush and sandpaper. B. Deer Relief Carving Al Gerads Rice, MNDear Relief Carving, "intaglio" relief. Size - 9" X 13" on a basswood, bark edged board. Bring your sharp tools, gloves and bench hook. Al is a member of the CMWA, St. Cloud, Minnesota forover 25 years, and really enjoys the weekend workshops. Skill level: anyone. Cost for materials $22.00. Contact Al Gerads at: [email protected]

C. 13" Crappie Perry Johs Blaine, MNA 13" butternut wood crappie will be this year's wood carving project. No fishscales carved. By the end of the weekend you should be ready for final sanding,finish and mounting. Need: 1/2" gouge, 1/8" to 1/4" or smaller V - tool, carvingknife and if you have, a bench hook. I have three which I'll bring. Skill level:beginner to advanced. Cost: $25.00, cutout, fish eyes and brass rod. Contact PerryJohs at: [email protected]

D. Whimzy House Bob Lawrence Fargo, NDWhimzy house made of basswood. Bob will provide 2” X 2” X 5” to 7” predrilled blank, battery and light. Students can utilize various samples to make their own, or be creative. Finishing materials will be available. Bring: Palm tools/knife and your imagination. Occ/Denny tools will be available. E. Chip Carving Bill Ness Sartell, MNChip carving. All students will start with a practice board to hone skills, thenprogress to projects such as coasters, trivets, and jewelry/recipe boxes. If you do notyet have a Chip carving knife, I have samples from most manufacturers to try outbefore buying. Skill level: beginner to advanced. Cost for materials: $15 plusadditional project fees. F. Fisherman Lee Olson Crystal, MNScandinavian style carving of a fisherman. 7” tall with fishing pole and fish. Lee will give a history of the flat plain style carvings of Norway and Sweden and show his collection of his carvings from his teachers, Harley Refsal and Bill Jaeger. This is a "carving in the round". Lee will show you how he makes his fishing poles and will furnish fishing hooks. Skill level: beginner to intermediate. Cost: $25.00. G. Human Caricature Russell Scott St. Paul, MN Many human caricature rough outs to choose from. Figures range from Santas to cowboys tofemale figures. H. ‘Ninja’ the Turtle Don Fischer Cottonwood, MN "Ninja" the turtle is carved from a basswood rough out. Tools needed: carving knife and gouges, carving glove and a strop. Bring a light if you need one. Skill level: anyone. Costs: $30. Contact Don Fischer at: [email protected]

I. Eagle Bust on Arrowhead Wes Spadgenske Andover, MNEagle bust portrait framed in an old flint arrowhead, about 5 1/2" by 7". The texture of theeagle head and arrowhead are done with Palm tools. We will insert glass eyes. Painting willbe discussed, but not done in class. Tools needed: sharp knives and Palm tools, especially"V" tools for texturing. A bench hook would be handy while carving the frame. Skill level:

J. Wood Spirit in Bark Chris Whillock Faribault, MN Learn to create your own spirit carved in bark with eyes, nose, mouth, features and expressions. Skill level: All. Cost $20.00. Contact Chris Whillock at: [email protected]

K. Butternut Critters Dick Zawacki Northfield, MN Choose from a variety of realistic critters, all done in Butternut, including bull, bear,crappie, or wood duck. We will concentrate on the animal’s anatomy, body posture,and musculature to create a pleasantly realistic carving. Details can be added to suityour own style. Tools needed: sharp knife and assorted Palm tools. Skill level:confident. Material costs include blank, eyes (if used), and related items. – $20.00 -$25.00. General Notes of Importance and Interest

Check in - Saturday, November 11th at 8:00 am. Brief meeting at 8:30 am.

Classes - Start at 9:00 am, end at noon for lunch, resume at 1:00 pm and continues until 5:00 pm Saturday and 4:00 pm Sunday. No class changes may be made without approval of the seminar coordinator. All classes are in the same room. Therefore, there will be no classes that have wood burning or use power tools, because of allergies.

Class assignments - First Come, First Served basis. Earliest postmark on registration ensures getting your choice of class. If all your choices of classes are filled, you will be notified of other classes available or cancellation. Classes are limited to 8 students per class.

Notification of class assignments will be sent out in mid-October.

Cancellation - After September 15, 2017 there will be a $20.00 charge for anyone dropping out of the seminar. After October 15, 2017, there will be no refund. If you must cancel, please notify Cecil Harbaugh at 763-421-9207 or [email protected].

Courtesy - Be considerate of your instructor's time so he/she can spend equal time with each student. Horseplay and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated. Your experience and knowledge may be interesting to the class, but during class time please show respect to your instructor and classmates and let your instructor lead the class.

Lunches - Will be provided and are included in the seminar fee.

Lighting – If you want better lighting, bring a lamp along.

Smoking and Alcohol - Smoking is prohibited in the VFW. Alcohol is available in the Lounge. We ask that you refrain from indulging until the carving day is over at 5:00 pm.
