Las Aventuras de Mifú y Tina (5&6 years old)

El Abanico Program – Las aventuras de Mifú y Tina

This structured program is the starting point for 5 & 6 year olds and present the adventures of

two lovely characters Mifú and Tina. The program is divided into the 4 seasons of the year.

Children learn to use the target language in real and everyday situations – greeting friends,

naming the words for clothes when it is cold, saying what they can do, asking for food, etc. At

this young age, children are very receptive to new sounds, which become familiar very quickly.

They are uninhibited and quickly become confident and at ease with Spanish.

For these reasons, Las aventuras de Mifú y Tina y las estaciones, contains a lot of stories,

action chants, songs and games so that the children learn Spanish just like young Spanish

children do and in the same way as they learnt their mother tongue. These are activities they

will enjoy and will repeat over and over again, absorbing language as they play.

La Jolie Ronde also provides with fun activity books covering a wide range of useful vocabulary

with emphasis on oral communication

Benefits of teaching a language early in life

Page 13: Methodology 01 - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-17954900/documents... · ¡Hola Pedro y Carmen! (7&8 years old) El Abanico Program – ¡Hola Pedro y

Research and many press articles have highlighted the benefits of learning languages from an

early age. We have picked below some of those opinions

5-7 Educator Magazine October 2010 – “How to introduce other languages” – By leading MFL Advisor for Wakefield LA

Rachel Redfearn.

•There are many benefits of introducing foreign languages to young learners

•Children absorb words and phrases easily through repeated exposure to the language

•Listening skills improve as they listen for key words or sounds and notice the intonation and sound patters of the new language

•When teaching a language to very young learners, it is important to move away from the notion of covering lots of vocabulary and

new phrases

•Young children need much repetition and will benefit from being exposed to language in texts either through song or reading

stories

•Children will happily join in with action songs and will listen to new songs with enjoyment

•Children will enjoy performing simple finger rhymes and will recognise that tone of voice indicates mood

•There are many language games that can be played with children as they learn everyday vocabulary, such as colours or days of

the week

EYE (Early Years Education), September 2006

•Research has shown that learning a foreign language is much easier before the age of six or seven

•Benefits extend to cognitive, psychological and emotional development

•A child learning a foreign language early on is more likely to get the hang of the Spanish accent making

them less self-conscious when speaking and easier to understand; they will also have more enthusiasm

•Children who have learnt a second language tend to outperform peers in all areas of the curriculum and

show superior problem-solving skills

•The extra knowledge a child picks up leads to an increase in self-esteem as greater understanding of the

world and appreciation of other cultures develop. Learning another language so early will also help avoid

negative stereotypes of other nationalities

•Learning a foreign language in nursery is fun, revolving around games, songs and rhymes, without the

pressure often found later on in school when learning grammar or verbs is more of a focus

•There is a growing interest in learning a second language young as early years establishments

throughout the country are introducing foreign languages for children to enjoy

Page 14: Methodology 01 - storage.googleapis.comstorage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-17954900/documents... · ¡Hola Pedro y Carmen! (7&8 years old) El Abanico Program – ¡Hola Pedro y

Supernanny magazine, November 2006 – “ How to learn a language”

•Giving your child the chance to take up a second language early can help them learn quickly and give them confidence

•Their learning is accelerated if they start while they are gathering their basic language skills when their brains are

already geared up for absorbing information

•The more fun it is, the more they will acquire without realising it

•If you leave the learning of a language too late, then you run the risk of a child feeling self-conscious as they don’t want

to make mistakes in front of their friends

•Learning a second language can introduce a child to the idea that other cultures exist

Nursery World, November 2006

•Learning a foreign language in the early years is growing in popularity, providing a good selling point for nurseries, a

draw for parents and a source of fun for more and more nursery age children

•Many parents take the view that nursery is a good time to begin, when children are receptive, are free from pressure to

prepare for SATs and can take foreign language learning in their stride

•Research has shown that before the mental age of seven or eight, children pick up languages more easily

DCFS (Department for Children Schools and Families), 2002 – “Languages for All, Languages for Life”

•Early foreign language learning can reinforce literacy skills and nurture enthusiasm
