A word from the Superintendent

Many things canlet us down –but we can trulydepend on GodDEAR Friends,How dependent are you on things that aren’t really allthat important?

In the last few months we have been having prob-lems with our phone and broadband at home, whichhas left us for days at a time without these connectionsthat we consider to be vital.

The final straw was that we arrived home from hol-iday on 2nd January to discover that we were discon-nected again. When I phoned the provider I was toldthat major work was being carried out in the area andwe would not have either broadband or telephoneuntil 10th January!

I did plenty of ranting at the time and it has beeninconvenient not to be able to have contacts in theusual way and for this to be an added complication toworking life when we have become so used to havingthese available 24/7. And catch-up TV doesn’t work, either!

It is important, and it does matter, and we are thank-ful that we have mobile phones that allow us to keepin contact with the family, and that we can still see andrespond to e-mails, even if only in a limited way. Butit does make we wonder whether we have become toodependent on these means of communication.

Perhaps, in our current climate, there are many otherthings that we have become too dependent on.

Those of us who have cars expect them to start at theturn of a key (or press of a button) and we get frustrat-ed when they don’t. Gadgets and white goods aroundthe house that make life easier throw us into chaoswhen they break down. The list could go on.

At the beginning of this new year (while we haven’tgot internet and telephones) it makes we wonderwhether we should be trying harder to be less depend-ent on these things. Then, perhaps, we will becomemore dependent on each other, on our human relation-ships, and we might also reflect on our relationshipwith God.

During the season of Lent we reflect on Jesus’ timein the wilderness, when he put aside everything else tospend time alone, fasting and praying and seekingGod’s guidance for his ministry.

Many of the things we are dependent on today haveactually become distractions. How many times do wewalk into a room (public or otherwise) and almosteveryone is sitting, head down, staring at a screen.

That isn’t necessarily all bad, but what conversa-tions could be had if we engaged with each other faceto face; how could our lives be enriched by focusingon the people around us; how could we grow spiritu-ally if we were less dependent on ‘things’ and moredependent on God?

In this season of Lent can we find ways to be a littleless dependent - putting down some of our gadgets -and fasting from these so that we may create a spacethrough which God may enter more deeply into ourlives and we will recognise our true dependence onthe one who creates us, and, through his son, redeemsthe world. With best wishes,Mick

‘A great nightof inspirationalspeaking andChristian music’ ON Sunday, March 15, at 6.30pm, the BarnsleyMethodist Circuit will be hosting an event called‘Honesty Over Silence’, which is touring the UK.

The event is based around the book ‘Honesty OverSilence’, written by Patrick Regan OBE, who willbe exploring themes from his book, accompaniedby a number of musicians, including Joanne Hoggand Natasha Petrovic de Maio.

Organised by Kirstie Hall and Ian Wragg, it ishoped that the event will attract people from withinthe church and external organisations involved incommunity mental health work.

Said Ian: “We have been very blessed in gettingthe ‘Honesty Over Silence’ tour to Barnsley. I heardPatrick speak at an event I attended last year andwas inspired to try to get him to Barnsley. He is sogood at opening up conversations around topics thatmany find difficult, such as trusting in God whenlife is painful, dealing with anxiety and depression, learning to look after ourselves.

“I think we are going to be in for a great night ofinspirational speaking and some of the best currentChristian music. I hope everyone in the circuit willsupport us at what promises to be an inspirationalevent.”

Patrick is the founder of a charity called KintsugiHope and previously founded the urban youth workcharity XLP. He has worked with some of the poor-est communities around the world and regularlycontributes to radio and TV on issues of poverty andjustice.

He received the Mayor of London’s Peace Awardand is an honorary fellow of the London SouthBank University and the Centre for Social Justice. He has written five books, Honesty Over Silencebeing the most recent.

Joanne Hogg is a Northern Irish singer-song-writer, who is best known for her work as the leadsinger and songwriter with Iona, the CelticChristian progressive rock and pop band. Iona havebeen making records since 1989 and have beendescribed as being amongst the most skillful musi-cians in Christian music, if not the entire musicbusiness.

Jo will be performing songs around the theme ofhonesty, faith and hope.

Nineteen-years-old Natasha Petrovic de Maio –better known as Tashi – started playing the violin atthe age of four and by the age of six had alreadycompleted her grade four and participated as theyoungest performer at the Edinburgh Festival thatyear. In September 2008 she was granted a fullscholarship into the Yehudi Menuhin School.

She has performed both nationally and interna-tionally, including solo and orchestral tours aroundEngland, Scotland, Belgium, Spain andSwitzerland, and has also played at a number ofChristian festivals and conferences.

The event will be at Emmanuel Methodist Churchand there will be a cover charge of £5, includingrefreshments. Tickets can be obtained from JayneWragg at the circuit office (01226321522) or Ian07974649958. If you can, please support thisunique alternative worship opportunity.

A Mission to fulfilJan andBarryEldredandRachelMarsdenready tobravetheSleepOut

NOVEMBER was wet! Wet and cold! The floodswere all around us in South Yorkshire. Three of usmet up in the dark; we watched the rain bouncing offguttering and checked the weather forecast: tempera-tures were falling. We looked at each other – were wemad? Should we go home now?

But we had come so far and there was no turningback; we had a mission to fulfill that night and peoplewere relying on us. We encouraged each other, stamped our feet and rubbed our hands, pulling ourjacket zips up to our chins and our hats over our ears.

We found a shelter, where the concrete was dry, andalthough the wind was whistling around us, the rainwas not blowing in our direction. We put down ourbags so that we could jump around and move morefreely.

More people joined us, asking: “Do you think wecan do it?” We reassured each other that this missionwas important for so many people and, in spite of theweather, we should carry on.

Kind people were there, offering us cups of hot teaand coffee and the luxury of hot chocolate; othersoffered us food. In difficult situations there is alwayssomeone who extends generous, practical support;they would help us get through the night and completethe task ahead. Someone produced a football and wetapped it between us – another way of keeping warmand passing the time, whilst we waited for the missionto start.

As the temperatures dropped further, around10.30pm, we were ready to begin; we unpacked ourbags, checking that the rain wouldn’t reach us and try-ing to find a spot where the effects of the cold windwere minimized. Our mission kit was laid out; card-board, aluminium, blankets, sleeping bags and someemergency high energy snacks. We were ready; at11.00pm we began.

Our mission was taking part (again) in the SleepOutfor Centrepoint Barnsley, designed to raise awarenessof, and funding for the wonderful work ofCenterpoint, in our town, with young people 16- 25years.

The evening was full of camaraderie, shared withapproaching 100 like-minded people. We slept under-neath the East Stand at Barnsley Football Club and, yes, it was wet, windy and cold. The concrete wasfreezing and the cold rose up through the layers but, totally submerged in our bags, we stayed pretty warmand managed to snatch a few hours of slumber.

Was this like sleeping rough? In some ways, yes: wefound a bit of shelter; we slept on the ground insideour sleeping bags; strangers offered us food and drink;we woke up feeling stiff and as soon as we wriggledout of our bags the cold hit us. People sat, in theirsleeping bags, leaning against a wall looking dazedand sleepy; images with which we are familiar on thestreets of Barnsley.

In many other ways, no: we were safe; we knew itwas only one night; we had homes to which we wouldreturn; we knew where to find our next meal; we knewwhere to go for a warm shower; we knew what we hadplanned for the following day was likely to happen.

As we drove away, we wondered what a roughsleeper would be doing in the rain, (yes it was stillraining); where they would go to be dry and warm, find drinks and food, let alone how they could face afuture of the same.

Fundraising is used in Barnsley to support over 60young people (16-25 years), with accommodation, supported living in the community and education andtraining.

Importantly Centrepoint works with young people, for as long as it takes. Support is individual; sensitive;small steps; suffers set-backs and deals with complex-ity, but 86% of all the young people experience posi-tive outcomes.

We slept out for one night in the hope that youngpeople in Barnsley may never have to. Between us weraised over £1700; a huge thank you to those whodonated. We hope and pray that one day, together, wecan fulfill that mission. Join us next year?Jan and Barry Eldred and Rachel Marsden

James Campbell, Chief Executive, Blythswood CareDear friends of Barnsley Methodist Circuit

Thank you so much for being an important part ofBlythswood Care’s 2019 Shoe Box Appeal. Yourinvolvement has made a difference.

For 26 years, the kindness of people like you hasallowed shoebox gifts to reach people of differentages, with different backgrounds and different storiesto tell.

Our Shoe Box Appeal started in 1993 with 300boxes being given to people in Romania. Last year, more than 107,000 shoeboxes were given to people inneed of care and support across Eastern Europe.

This winter, our shoeboxes are being deliveredacross eastern Europe and Pakistan.

People like you have been filling gift-wrapped shoe-boxes with items carefully chosen to show you care.Every gift in every shoebox makes a difference. It canprovide practical support, but, more than this, it letssomebody know that they’ve been thought about, thatthey are valuable, that they are loved – what an amaz-ing gift to give and receive! The impact can last longerthan the festive season; it can bring a smile, it cantransform a life.

I’m pleased to enclose a certificate of appreciationthat you can display. This is a small thing to showappreciation for your kindness and generosity. Thankyou on behalf of Blythswood Care and especially onbehalf of those you won’t meet, but whose livesyou’re helping make better with your great support.

Ignite team going from strength to strength

IN 2014 the Methodist Church in Barnsley decided tobegin working with primary and secondary schoolsacross the area.

After some conversations with schools it becameapparent that the help schools wanted was in improv-ing mental well-being and promoting positive mentalhealth. In response we developed, and now deliver.early intervention workshops for both primary andsecondary age children which are interactive, ageappropriate and engaging for all children and youngpeople.

Since then, we have gone from strength to strength,so much so that in 2019 the North Area Council gaveus a grant to deliver our workshops in some of the pri-mary and secondary schools across the North ofBarnsley.

Last year was the busiest year yet for the IgniteBarnsley team, working with sixteen primary schools, five secondary schools and one group of young peoplefrom the Smithies Caravan site.

Through all the projects we offer to schools and thecommunity we have seen over 650 children and youngpeople in the name of Christ and His church.

All the projects offered help children and young peo-ple to understand what it is to have positive mentalhealth, along with a range of positive coping mecha-nisms to reduce stress, help with well-being and thepromotion of positive mental health.

We also hope to help prevent over escalation of emo-tional issues, improve communication skills throughpromoting good self-esteem and self-awareness,improve attendance and help to reduce pressuresencountered in schools and life.

Over the next year we hope to work with even morechildren and young people across Barnsley.

If you would like any more information about theproject please contact Kirstie Hall at [email protected].

Thy kingdom come - with a cup of tea!Louise Dawson focuses on Fairtrade fortnightOCTOBER 2019 marked the 25th anniversary of theFairtrade foundation, the UK arm of an internationalmovement which tries to ensure that the people whowork to grow crops such as cotton, tea, coffee, choco-late, bananas and sugar are paid a fair price.

Back in 1979 a group of radical Christians set upTraidcraft and I became one of their earliest volunteerrepresentatives, selling fairly-traded tea, coffee andcraft goods to family and friends and at church events.

Then it was impossible to buy Fairtrade goods inshops and supermarkets, but gradually things havechanged and now we can find many kinds of goodsbearing the Fairtrade mark, which ensures that theproducers have been paid a fair price. The FairtradeFoundation also pays producers a premium whichsupports local social, economic or environmentalprojects.

Today one in three bananas sold in the UK isFairtrade and the UK is one of the world’s leadingFairtrade markets. The Fairtrade Foundation websitehas lots of information about fairly-traded goods andwhere to buy them.

I joined Traidcraft because, as a Christian, I wanted

to do something to address the poverty of so much ofthe world and the inequalities of international trade. Now I am a member of our Methodist DistrictFairtrade Group and we have our own banner with aquotation from the prophet, Amos: “Let justice flowlike a river.”

We hope that churches will continue to promoteFairtrade and encourage people to buy fairly-tradedgoods wherever possible.

Fairtrade Fortnight, which is the last week ofFebruary and the first week of March, is an excellentfocus for this and I hope that all our churches might beable to have a Fairtrade stall or simply promoteFairtrade goods at a regular coffee morning duringthat period, or close to it.

You might think that changing to buying Fairtradetea is not going to have much impact in building amore just world. I disagree. Jesus often spoke aboutthe way in which God’s kingdom comes throughsmall things, small people, small steps. We can allcontribute to that kingdom of justice and love, eventhrough a cup of tea.

‘The Greatest Showman’ comes to BarnsleyDURING Advent a group of people in the BarnsleyNorth East Church met to look at the film ‘TheGreatest Showman’. As they watched the film, sectionby section, over four weeks, Rev Claire Rawlinson ledreflections on some of the themes linked to ourChristian journey.

At the start of the film, the lead character, Barnum, has a dream of becoming a success, and we thoughtabout what dreams we have had over our lives andwhether we achieved them, comparing this to thedreams and expectations we see in the bible about thecoming Messiah.

The story continues with Barnum starting a showfeaturing all sorts of misfits. This prompted consider-ation of how welcoming the church is to those whosociety rejects.

After achieving success, Barnum, who has seemedto chase success without caring for those around him, suddenly loses everything. We were asked how wecope when things come crashing down. Where do wefind support?

We also considered what our priorities are and whatit means to be successful.

The group found this an interesting way to look at

some issues that face us all.At the end we had a wonderful bring and share

Christmas party and watched the whole film through. There were some who even joined in with the singing!Heather Hague

Ninety-plus and still reaching for the stars

A Christmas reflectionDear Friends,IT was one morning before Christmas. House-workdone, I thought ‘okay, Betty, time for elevenses’.Which means, of course, a welcome cup of tea!

The radio was on, and a song was playing whichbrought back happy memories – ‘Catch a falling starand put it in your pocket, never let it fade away’. Mygrandad used to play it and sing it, and he taught methe words. He also did his best to teach me to play hisconcertina, but without success.

There is another song which says ‘When you wishupon a star’. How many of us, especially in our teens, have done just that, and even in later years we stillhave hopes and dreams, don’t we?

On another occasion I was watching a film starringBing Crosby and Danny Kaye, all about folk whowere wishing for snow, and it opened with Bingsinging ‘I’m dreaming of a White Christmas’ – a love-ly, magical song that outlives most of the tunes oftoday.

It’s the same with Elvis Presley. It is 42 years sincehis death, yet he still appears in the musical chartswith songs like ‘Are you lonesome tonight.’

It reminds me that we know, when we accept Jesusinto our lives, we no longer have to be ‘lonesometonight’ – or any other night for that matter. For he isalways with us.

For example, we can find him at Christmas bazaars.Unfortunately, I could not attend Monk Bretton’sevent in 2019, but I’m told everyone had a cracker ofa time, with the bacon butties going down a treat asusual.

We can also find Jesus when listening to brass bands- such as the Salvation Army - playing carols in ourbusy streets and supermarkets and enjoying thoselovely nativity plays, with many parents having sortedout tea towels and sheets to make costumes for thechildren. How we clap at the end!

As children we all loved that magical man, FatherChristmas. When we were very young, my brotherand I shared a bedroom and one year, while lookingthrough our stockings, I came across the book, ‘Alicein Wonderland’. Inside was written: “To Elizabeth, known as Betty, enjoy all the words. Much love,Father Christmas.”

I turned to my brother and said: “Well, I never! Ourdad must be Father Christmas, because this is hishandwriting!”

And what about pantomimes? They have become abig part of the English Christmas scene, telling their

stories in a mixture of song, words and dance. I canrecall one in which our Editor, Keith, appeared, alongwith sister Sheila. (“Oh, no, he didn’t!” “Oh, yes, hedid!”) And we all shouted: “He’s behind you!”

Christmas is a time of giving, so there are all thosepresents to buy. Some people, like my dear friend, thelate Tina Roper, start buying them in January. Othersenjoy the last-minute excitement of rushing round onChristmas Eve. Most of us fall somewhere inbetween.

All the shops entice us to spend, eat and drink toexcess in celebration. But celebration of what? Thereal reason to celebrate is all too often pushed to oneside.

In the Nativity story we read that Joseph, along withMary, had to go to his birth town to register his nameat a census, and I found it ironic that Advent timefound us having to register our names on votingpapers in the General Election. People wondered whatto do. Politicians themselves were in a muddle, andtheir behaviour made one wonder if any were fit torule this country.

But there is always a light in the darkness for thosewho follow Jesus and as I was having these negativethoughts I heard Perry Como on the radio singing‘Magic Moments; moments we’ve been sharing’.

May we continue to share magic moments, like theones I’ve mentioned, as we continue our journeythrough 2020.

May the New Year be for you a star-studded one. Ayear when you ‘wish upon a star’. A year when you‘catch a falling star’ and find that ‘pocketful ofstarlight’. A year when that Bethlehem star continuesto shine brightly in your night sky, leading you, infaith, to that baby in the stable, our Lord and SaviourJesus Christ. God made man. Emmanuel.Bless you for reading this,

Betty Fawcett

WE’VE done it again! Many of you will know that over the last two years

the Barnsley Christian Aid group have been fund-rais-ing towards a £5K project. This is when a localChristian Aid group commits to raise £5000 in twoyears and then the EU match-fund three times theamount raised, securing £20,000 for a Christian Aidproject in the developing world.

This, our third time of achieving this total, has beenby hosting a project in Ghana, where Christian Aidand its partners are working across three districts intwo regions with the aim of promoting job creation, revenue mobilisation and expansion of economicactivities for young people in an environmentally sus-tainable way.

Let’s hear a story from the project:After the misapplication of an injection as a young

woman, Safiya Musah was left physically disabledand reliant on family members. Life became evenmore challenging for Safiya, now 39, following thedeath of her brother, which left her responsible for thecare of his son and daughter.

Before hearing about GEOP’s training programmefor people with disabilities, Safiya had been sellingface towels at markets, but she struggled with non-paying customers and did not make enough money toprovide for her family.

She was accepted onto the soap-making trainingand managed to save £16.67 from the GEOP travelallowance, which she used to buy bowls, buckets andraw materials.

Her uncle invested £83 in her fledgling business and

A fund-raisinghat-trick forChristian Aidafter nine months trading she has produced 350 bot-tles of bleach, 300 bottles of liquid soap and 400 bot-tles of disinfectant.

The combination of a quality product and good mar-keting skills enabled her to make a profit of £347 inthat time and she now has six bulk customers whothemselves sell on Safiya’s products.

Safiya expressed her heartfelt gratitude to ChristianAid and the European Union for improving her liveli-hood, saying: “Participating in the training was thebest decision in my life. The skills I learnt from theproject changed my life as I can work to cater formyself and the children of my late brother and bettersupport their education.”

As you can see, the project makes a real differenceto real people. So, thank you to all those who support-ed the £5K appeal by giving a donation, having a cof-fee morning, hosting a stall or doing the many otherthings people have done. A small amount goes a longway and we are grateful that we have managed tocomplete our third successful project.Thank you.Cameron Stirk (Chair: Barnsley Christian AidGroup)

Easter Offering Dedication service at PilleyEACH year the Methodist Church holds an EasterOffering Dedication Service. This year the event willbe held at Pilley on the afternoon of 19 April, and Ihope that you will join us.

This is an opportunity for the gifts that have beencollected by each chapel, along with the offeringtaken at the Circuit Service to be received and dedi-cated before being sent to the World Mission Fund.

From small beginnings, collecting pennies inManchester over a family Christmas lunch, to theLondon District, distributing collecting bags at Easter, the Easter offering has developed throughout thecountry to become an annual opportunity to help tofinance the work carried out through the WorldMission fund.

This reflects the long history of commitment tooverseas work by the women of Methodism, who helpput together the service and recognises that local spe-cific relationships with overseas projects and the

World Church in Britain partnerships are given broad-er meaning by a national focus.

All the money raised through the Easter Offeringgoes to the World Mission Fund of the MethodistChurch in Britain to be allocated for work in our 65Partner Churches around the world.

This money has been used by overseas partners tofund such work as enabling young women in northIndia to undertake nurse and midwifery training, andsupporting Brazilian women to work in their churcheswith vulnerable women and children, developingwomen’s leadership roles and integrating culture andart into worship.

Please look out for the special offering envelopes inyour individual chapels (don’t forget to Gift Aidwhere possible) and come along to this special serviceto learn more about the opportunities the moneyraised helps to finance.Ellie Peet

Stephen, asked us to go up to his house after eveningservice. We didn’t have an evening service that day aswe were going to share tea with the Pogmoor people, but we would be home by five.

On arrival Stephen told us that Tim, our youngestson, had asked him to tell us that his marriage of six-teen years was over and he would be ringing us laterthat evening to talk to us about it.

Sadly, I have to say that I felt a massive weight liftedfrom my shoulders. I had been helping to carry thatburden for our son, as the load for him had becometoo much. It was a very sad time for us as we havefour beautiful grandchildren from Tim and we didn’twant to see them unhappy or sad.

All the love showed to John and me from our churchfamily and others was tremendous and that Joy andreassurance from God was there deep in my heart. Moreover, the love that was shown to Tim from hischurch family and his boss was beyond compare.

He was given a home for ten weeks with his bossand her husband, then a friend and her husband fromhis church gave him a home for a year until he finallymoved into a three bed-roomed converted barn on thefarm estate where he works.

Once again I had that Joy in my heart telling me thatI didn’t need to fret or worry about Tim, as he was inGod’s loving care.

We have had no contact with four of our grandchil-dren for two years now, and, from seeing them at leastonce a month and having them come to stay most hol-idays, that came as a blow.

However, although sad, I don’t feel bereft, because Iknow that the children are being held in the palm ofGod’s hand. I look at their photographs every day and,as I do my daily bible readings, I pray for them, andam reassured in my heart that all will be well.

I Thank God for the day that Jesus came into myheart and gave me His great JOY - a joy that is withme in my darkest times as well as in my joyous andordinary times. So, let nothing ever come between theSaviour Jesus and you.

God’s richest blessings, Mary Durham.

New year, new worship leaders, new members!

ABOVE;

Rev Mick Nealwelcomes threenew members tothe chapel atGreat Houghton.

RIGHT:

Congratulations toRichard, fromRyhill, and Trevor, from Kexborough, who have complet-ed their WorshipLeaders’ course. They are picturedhere with theirtutor, Louise.

The Joy of the Lordis my strength

J stands for Jesus.Y stands for you.O stand between them and it stands for nothing too.Let nothing come between whatever you do.Let nothing come between the Saviour Jesus andyou.

One weekend in February 1961 Mr. and Mrs.Patterson came from Blackpool to preach atKexborough Methodist chapel. During the Sundayevening worship I thought to myself the same thing ishappening inside me just like a few months earlierwhen I had gone on a bus with people fromKexborough and the villages around to hear a mancalled Joe Blinco preach at a church in Barnsley.

At the end of the service at Kexborough MrPatterson asked anyone who would like to give theirlife to Christ to come forward and stand at the front. Iwas shaking from the top of my head to my toes but Imanaged to walk to the front. I wasn’t really sure whatwas happening to me but I knew I had that specialfeeling in my heart that I had felt listening to JoeBlinco.

Next morning I went to work. Although I felt differ-ent I didn’t look any different, but my boss said to me:“Have you got saved Mary? You’re different.” I didn’tanswer him: I just kept on sweeping up. How did heknow?

On Whit Monday that same year I went with lots offriends from our youth club to Cliff College, and dur-ing a service in the big tent everything seemed to clickinto place and I knew I had received full salvation.

A big change had taken place within me and Irealised that the feeling I had was the Joy of the Lord, and that I must never be afraid to share my faith. Likemost people I continued to have many changes andchallenges in my life but nothing can ever take thatJoy away from me.

At 3pm, December 12th 2016, John and I returnedfrom a week’s holiday with our niece in London to seea pile of mail waiting for us on the front door mat. Wedidn’t bother looking at it straight away as a cup of teawas priority.

After a while John started opening the pile of letters. The first informed John that he had to either pay a fineand go to the naughty boys’ school. or get points onhis licence, as he had been filmed doing thirty-fourmph in a thirty zone.

The second letter was from the hospital to me. Iasked John to open it as I was texting my niece to saywe had arrived home safely. It was almost certainlythe results of my mammogram that I had on the thirti-eth of November.

John did as I had asked and said that I should havegone back that morning, I thought he was teasing, buthe said he would never tease about such a thing. Iquickly read the letter and rang the department toapologise. It was ten minutes to four and they askedme to go straight up to the breast unit as theConsultant Radiographer was still there and wouldstay to see me before going home.

Within ten minutes John and I had arrived. By twen-ty past four I had had all the necessary tests done andwas gently told that I had a tumour about two centime-tres in size, very deep, in my left breast, and that Iwould have to have it removed. They said they wouldsoon have me on the road to recovery. Recovery? Ididn’t even feel ill!

On the 11th January 2017 I had the tumour removed.I didn’t feel that my life was coming to an end but Idid say to the Lord if this is my time then please helpme to accept it graciously. I never felt afraid becausethat same joy that had been in my heart for fifty-fiveyears was stronger than ever.

Just before I was to start Radiotherapy our son,

Youngsters have an amazing time at 3generateON a cold November weekendsix young people and two lead-ers set off to sunny Southport tojoin over 1200 young people toattend 3generate, the Methodistchurch’s annual youth assembly. From all around the countrychurches sent representatives tojoin in the conversations andlearn more about how theycould have an impact on theworld.

3generate actively encouragesyoung people to think aboutissues facing the world todayand promotes opportunities forthem to get involved to make achange. Each year the assemblyproduces a manifesto which ispresented to the widerMethodist church and chal-lenges local churches to join theyoung people in making a dif-ference.

The young people fromBarnsley had an amazing timelearning and sharing their viewsabout the issues that face youngpeople today.

This year’s theme was set by

the current youth president was‘Jesus loves all’. The groupwere challenged to how thiswould look in their local com-munity and the wider world.Since returning from 3generatethe young people are beginningto think more about their ownfaith journeys and how they canencourage others to do this too.

In 2020 3generate is movingto a bigger venue so that more

young people can attend. It’shoped that a group of youngpeople from Barnsley will beable to attend 3generate 2020and come back again enthusedto making a difference and hav-ing a voice on the issues thatface the Methodist church andthe wider world.

If you have a young person atyour church, you think mightwant to go contact Kirstie Hallon 07929621018.

A daunting responsibilitybut God is at work…I ORIGINALLY come from North Yorkshire; my dadwas a farmer so I grew up on the family farm. Myfamily were chapel folk so I went to Sunday schooland remembering my gran singing me choruses atbedtime. I cannot remember a time when I didn’tbelieve in God.

Back then I remember being told you had to inviteJesus into your heart and as a child saying the prayerbut then being slightly concerned because I didn’t feelany different.

I became a member of the Methodist Church in myteens and have attended services ever since. While Iwas at University I got involved in the ChristianUnion and it was great to be with Christians my age, joining bible studies, prayer meetings, sharing withChristians from other denominations and starting tothink through what being a Christian meant.

I came to Barnsley just over 12 years ago, moving tobe near my place of work, and looked for the nearestMethodist Church, joining Carlton Chapel.

It was a small congregation and when LocalArrangements were planned, I started to help out. Tostart with we used meditations and readings frombooks but eventually I started to put together my owntalks.

I attended the worship leaders’ course, workingthrough the different parts that make up a service.People started to say I should do local preaching but Ialways put it off, saying I didn’t feel called by God.How I expected to hear that call I’m not quite sure. Isuppose I wanted to experience some definite divineintervention.

I was not sure that I could take on the task of leadingworship, being responsible for finding ways to bringpeople to God and God to people. I remembered someof the local preachers from my past who had seemedso in touch with God, I wasn’t sure that I measured upto that standard.

Despite all this, I had a feeling that I was just puttingit off, and when the invitation to attend a meeting tointroduce the new course for local preachers –Worship Leading & Preaching –was publicised I went

along and ended up saying I would give it a try. Thecourse is now run through information accessed on acomputer.

After reading and thinking about the material, eachsection ends with a choice of tasks to give you thechance to put the teaching into practice – these werechallenging but useful.

I prepared a talk about how what our buildings lookslike can influence what people think about God, spenttime at Monk Bretton priory ruins thinking about howChristians have followed Christ through the ages andput together a sermon on whether Christians should bevegetarian.

In my experience the role of a local preacher was tolead Sunday Worship and most importantly to preacha good sermon. As I have gone through the course, Ihave realised that the sermon is only part of the serv-ice.

As local preachers prepare, they are drawing togeth-er all the different elements – prayers, bible readings, hymns, visual aids, poems- to help the congregationencounter God, and from that encounter move on intotheir everyday world and make a difference.

I still find this a daunting responsibility but time andagain I have found the resources and ideas coming tome as I prepare, and that reminds me that God is atwork.

ChristineHalliday andHeather Hagueshare theirthoughts onbecomingfully accreditedlocal preachers

‘A rocky roadat times, butafter 12 yearsI’ve got there!’WELL, I can’t believe I am actually writing this, but I have finished my ‘Faith and WorshipCourse’ and in March I will be accredited as anofficial Local Preacher!

I know that some of you are probably thinking ‘Ithought she had finished years ago!’ but now Ihave, and may I say ‘I am thrilled to bits’. It hastaken me almost twelve years and, as most of youknow, it’s been a bit of a rocky road at times, butGod is good and by the power of His Spirit I’vegot there.

It was two months after my first service that mydaughter became ill and there were many occa-sions when I honestly thought I would not be ableto complete my studies.

If it wasn’t for the unending support that I havereceived from Mick, Eileen, my friends, myChurch at Houghton, the Circuit, the District andeach of you, I would not be writing this, and thatbecame especially true after Naomi’s death a yearago. Your kindness, patience and understandinghave been a real God-sent blessing, and I thankyou so much.

I became a local Preacher thanks to Joyce Hillfrom Houghton, who first suggested it many yearsago, but, to be quite honest, I doubted my callingso much that I ignored her. However, she kept on

persisting, and encouraged others to join her, andeventually I took the plunge, deciding that Iwould continue until someone told me to stop.

I can still remember what it felt like to walk intomy first Local Preachers’ Meeting, but the loveand support that I was given from that very firstminute has been unbelievable.

I was appointed a brilliant mentor in JanetLowrie, who I must have driven to distractionover the years, and I accept full responsibility formore than a few of her grey hairs, but, as I keepreminding her, ‘she got me for life and not just forChristmas’.

I am sure we have all seen many changes overthe past 12 years, some good and some not sogood, but despite it all I know we will all agreethat the love of God is the one thing that hasremained a constant in our lives, and that is thething that keeps us going and keeps us movingforward.

Our heavenly Father loves us all so very muchand I truly believe that if we remember that thenthe rest will follow.

I have met some amazing people over the yearsand we have shared some great times. I can’t waitto see what the next chapter will hold for us all.

The love and support that I have been given has been unbelievable!

A wake-up prayer Dear God,Even though I clutch my blanket and moan when thealarm clock goes off, thank you, Lord, that I can hearit. There are many who are deaf and cannot hear at all.

Even though I keep my eyes closed against themorning light as long as possible, thank you, Lord, that I can see. Many are blind and cannot see.

Even though I huddle in bed and put off getting upfor as long as possible, thank you, Lord, that I havethe strength to get out of bed. There are many who arenot as fortunate because they are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of the day is hectic, whenthe socks are lost and the toast is burned and tempersgrow short, and the children are noisy, thank you,Lord, for my family. There are many out there who areon their own and lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks likethose in glossy magazines and the menu is at timesunbalanced, thank you Lord for the food we haveevery day. There are many in the world who arealways hungry because no food is available for them.

Even though the everyday routine of my job is oftenmonotonous, thank you Lord for the opportunity towork. There are many who are unemployed.

Even though I grumble and moan about my fatesometimes and wish that my circumstances were lessmodest, thank you Lord, that I have my life and myfreedom.

New year, new worship leaders, new members!

ABOVE;
