The Situation
l Fire units with a hazmat team are dispatched to a small explosion in a residential area
l The explosion occurred in a shed and was self-limited. There is no residual fire.
l Investigation reveals equipment suspicious for a meth lab in the shed and subsequently in the house

The School
l A 10 year-old child in the classroom with windows overlooking the scene sees the officers dressed in PPE
l Shortly thereafter, he begins to complain of a headache
l Within about 30 minutes several children are complaining of headaches, dizziness and nausea

The Property
l The home is a rental property l All of the lab equipment and chemicals have
been removed l Authorities have finished their investigation
and the home is no longer a crime scene l Essentially all of the family’s personal effects
are still in the home

l The owner of the property would like to put this whole incident behind her and rent the home to another tenant
l She is unsure what she must do in order to safely and legally return the property to service
l She is also very concerned about who will bear the costs of repairing the damage to the property, the investigation and the clean-up
