Disposable Instrument, Lenexa, Kansas, has recently installed a new CITIZEN K16E Type VII Swiss automatic lathe. The 44-year-old firm specializes in machining, pointing (grinding) and bending of round stainless and aluminum from .031” to .512” in diameter and up to 25” in length. The company also offers buff-ing, polishing, electropolishing and packaging. Vendor managed inventory (VMI) is also avail-able. “We can handle jobs from 50 to 50,000”, noted Ken Erich, operations manager. “As well as prototypes.”

The new CITIZEN, the company’s second, was purchased from McClain Tool & Technol-ogy. It was needed to keep up with customer demand and for its productivity. “McClain is big part of why we brought the machin-ing work in house,” commented Erich. “Our Citizens have greatly reduced our delivery time. Mc-Clain’s local service techs are real experts.”

The new Citizen K16E features dual spindles, 7-axis, a 15,000 rpm spindle and an FMB 12’ magazine barloader.

Other equipment at the com-pany includes several specialized grinding, bending and finishing machines along with the electrop-olishing operation.

Disposable Instrument has recently expanded and now has al-most 12,000-sq.-ft. of space for its veteran crew of 11 (average tenure of over 15 years). It primarily serves the medical and animal health industries world-wide.

“Our quality, delivery, ex-perienced crew and customer service has been important to our long-term success,” stated Sandy

Microfinish, a metal finishing company with four locations in the Greater St. Louis area, is cel-ebrating its 55th anniversary and continues to expand and improve its operations and services.

The firm offers a wide range of metal finishing services includ-ing zinc plating, nickel/chrome plating, e-coating, powder coating and mechanical finishing (de-burring, burnishing, blasting and washing).

The ISO-certified firm has four locations that specialize in particular processes/sizes.

The 15,000-sq.-ft. Sunset Hills facility (formerly C&A Metal Finishing) offers vibratory finishing, deburring, ball-burnish-ing and pre-plate finishing. Both automated and manual cabinets are available to clean parts of al-most any metal and configuration.

Operations Manager Mike Heinze commented that mechani-cal finishing takes a lot of trial and error to find out what works with different metals, sizes and finishes.

“We have vibratory units ranging from a ½ a cubic foot up to 20 cubic foot units,” stated Heinze, a long-time industry veteran. “We know that quick turnaround is key so 90% of our work is completed within three days.”

The Sunset Hills facility works with many metals as well as castings, stampings, forgings and carbon fiber parts.

Its Warrenton powdercoating location has 48,000-sq.-ft. and meets John Deere JDM F-17 specifications and Caterpillar’s 1E 1951-1952 quality specs for powder coating. Its powder-coat-ing operation is also designated as a PACCAR Certified Quality

supplier (for the rail and truck industries).

The Warrenton facility houses two high-production, variable speed, powder coating lines. One includes a climate-controlled booth for tight quality con-trol. Custom racking, masking, labeling and packaging are also available.

The 125,000-sq.-ft. Gratiot facility, features a RoHS compli-ant high production nickel/chrome plating line; an E-coating line and a new larger zinc plating line for larger parts and assemblies.

The 20,000-sq.-ft. St. Louis zinc plating location offers two fully-automated rack lines and one barrel line. It offers yellow and black chromate and RoHs com-pliant blue-bright finishes. Two

ovens for baking and hydrogen embrittlement relief are also on site.

Microfinish’s plating is certi-fied to ASTM, CAT, Ford, John Deere, GM and Toyota specs.

Tractor trailer and van trans-portation are also available.

“Having exceptional people is key to our success,” stated Bill Stock, president, with 33 years of experience in the finishing indus-try. “Our four locations really complement each other and can handle all our customers’ metal finishing needs. We like to say ‘Let us finish what you started!’”

Modern Plating Co., Inc., Tulsa, Oklahoma, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The firm offers a variety of plating and finish options includ-ing: anodize, chemical film, elec-troless nickel, passivate, silver, tin, zinc and zinc phosphate.

“We have focused on the processes that we do well,” stated Modern Plating’s Terry Lazar. He and his sister, Lesley Lazar Ault, are co-owners and children of company founder I. N. “Ike” Lazar.

In 1964, Ike Lazar, a long-time veteran in metal finish-ing, sold his house and used the proceeds to start the company at its current location. Plating part time (and with the help of Terry) the business was built up until Ike could work at it full time.

“My dad’s approach was ‘no job is too difficult’,” stated Terry Lazar, who is also a former Air Force fighter pilot and retired reservist. “Modern Plating always concentrates on responding to our customers’ needs,” he continued. “Our priorities are delivery, price

and quality. We work hard to keep our customers in parts. We have often been able to perform same-day service for a client that’s in a jam. We have several customers that have been with us for 50 years.” Lazar and Jeff Blanke, general manager, com-

bine for almost 80 years of experi-ence in plating and metal finishing. The two are quite proud of their crew and provide extra bonuses and incentives to keep everyone motivated.

Modern Plating serves a diverse group of industries across the mid-America region including: recreation, military, sporting goods, petroleum and electronics.

The family-owned firm oper-ates in a 10,000-sq.-ft. facility with a staff of 18.

Blanke pointed out that the company strives to maintain a 3-5 day turnaround on orders and is happy to provide tours to educate customers about the services the company provides.

The company has continually updated and improved its equip-ment and processes to maintain its high quality standards.

EDITORIALRAY LIPPE, EDITOR

Before we get too far into the new year, it appears we have to re-turn to the classroom for a refresh-er course on why we should retain the economic system that gave us, and other parts of the world, this very high standard of living.

Capitalism has always come under fire from socialists and communists and various religions. But, following World War II, it was clear that unleashing free enterprise after many years of government controls was a deciding factor in our victories. However, the success of capitalism was soon forgot-ten. By the late 60’s and into the 70’s “profit” was becoming a dirty word.

Businesspeople were caught off guard. Surely the public knows that without profits the factory or store will close. Still, few people spoke up to defend free enterprise. Some schools and colleges seemed more interested in teaching about the evils of the “Robber Barons” than the successes of capitalism in building America.

Today, with CEO salaries out of control, golden parachutes for even the worst performers, the rise of crony capitalism, the housing scandal and government’s insis-tence on income equality, it’s no wonder that even Pope Francis would criticize capitalism. (Of course his experience was in Ar-gentina.)

There’s a TV show called “American Greed,” but that’s a bit misleading. It showcases swindlers.

Any financial system or gov-ernment will fail when it’s run by criminals.

In his book, Money, Greed, and God, Jay W. Richards writes

that “Capitalism doesn’t need greed.” This is according to Adam Smith, author of Wealth of Nations (1776). “In a free market each person can pursue ends within his or her narrow sphere of competence and concern–our self interest–and yet an order will emerge that vastly exceeds anyone’s deliberations.”

Smith believed, “Any system that required everyone to always act selflessly is doomed to failure because it’s utopian. People aren’t like that. That’s the problem with socialism: it doesn’t fit the human condition.”

“In contrast, capitalism is made for real, fallen, limited human beings. “‘In spite of their natural selfishness and rapacity,’” busi-nesspeople “‘are led by an invisible hand...and thus without intending it, without even knowing it, advance the interest of society.’”

Richards, writes, “‘Notice that he says ‘in spite of.’ His point isn’t that a butcher, for example, should be selfish, or even that his selfish-ness is particularly helpful. Rather, his point is that even if the butcher is selfish, even if the butcher would love nothing more than to sell you a spoiled chunk of beef in exchange for your worldly goods, the butcher can’t make you buy his meat in a free economy.

“He has to offer meat you’ll freely buy. The greedy butcher, in other words, has to look for ways to set up win-win scenarios. Even to satisfy his greed, he has to meet your desires. The markets make this happen.” (Perhaps it’s the thought of an “invisible hand” that causes those intellectuals to roll their eyes and dismiss capitalism as smoke and mirrors. After all, how is it possible that one entrepreneur can end up helping thousands of people when all he intended to do was to get rich and become famous?)

Now, “Does capitalism make

is no evidence that capitalistic countries, or Americans in particu-lar, are greedier than average. In fact a recent British study found that America is the most generous with charitable giving.”

Larry Elder, writing for Creators Syndicate, says “Greed freaks out people...” He gives an example of a talk show host that asked Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, “When you see around the globe the maldistribution of wealth, the desperate plight of millions of people in underde-veloped countries...when you see the greed and concentration of power—did you ever have a moment of doubt about capitalism and whether greed’s a good idea to run on?”

Friedman responded: “Is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? You think Russia doesn’t run on Greed. You think China doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? Of course, none of us are greedy; it’s only the other fellow who’s greedy. The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests.

“The great achievements of civilizations have not come from government bureaus...Henry Ford didn’t revolutionize the automo-bile industry that way. In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty we’re talking about–the only cases in recorded history–are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade.”

Elder notes that “U2 frontman Bono, the rock star, agrees with Friedman. Bono has spent three decades raising money to allevi-ate poverty and combat AIDS and HIV in the Third World. In a speech at Georgetown University, Bono talks about his epiphany.”

“‘Rock star preaches capi-talism. Wow. Sometimes I hear myself and I just can’t believe it. But commerce is real...Aid is

just a stop-gap. Commerce (and) entrepreneurial capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid...In dealing with poverty here and around the world, welfare and foreign aid are a Band-Aid. Free enterprise is a cure.’”

We all knew that. The prob-lem is that many of our regula-tions and laws are making our markets less free every year. Let your family, friends and employ-ees know that, despite its flaws, free enterprise is the answer and worth defending.
