Description: Abstract:

This data set contains lines and polygons representing coastal hydrography used in the creation of the EnvironmentalSensitivity Index (ESI) for the Aleutian Islands. This data set comprises a portion of the ESI for Aleutians EastBorough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). The HYDRO data layer contains all annotationused in producing the atlas. The annotation features are categorized into three subclasses in order to simplify themapping and quality control procedures: GEOG or geographic features, SOC or socioeconomic features, and HYDROor water features. These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data includeinformation for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

Purpose: The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response.The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate andeffective protection of sensitive resources.

The process includes a standardized data entry methodology, hardcopy data review by in-house andexternal resource experts, a final Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process, and multiple automated logicalconsistency checks. Quantitative data (such as densities, counts, abundances, or concentrations) provided by resourceexperts for inclusion in the data set may vary widely in attribute accuracy, depending upon the methodology used tocollect and compile such data. The shoreline was derived primarily from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) digital line graph (DLG) files andAlaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) data. In some cases, gross shoreline changes or additionalhydrography polygons were sketched during overflights. These polygons were then digitized from the scannedand registered hardcopy maps. Also, additional hydrographic features were digitized directly from scannedUSGS topographic maps. Hardcopy maps of the attributed shoreline and habitat polygons were plotted at1:63,360 scale for verification of attributes.

Field verification has shown that the absolute positional accuracy of breaks between shoreline ESItypes with a 95-percent error bound is approximately 58 meters. The intertidal habitats of the Aleutians East Borough were mapped using the ESI shoreline ranking schemeoutlined below. In a typical ESI survey, a combination of observational scales is employed. Prior to overflights,existing aerial photos and 1:63,360 topographic maps are examined and parameters such as tidal regime, waveenergy, and long-shore sediment transport are assessed through interpretation of coastal landforms by anexperienced coastal geologist. If possible, modifications to the digital shoreline to be used in the project aremade at this time. Overflights are then conducted, flying at altitudes ranging from 300 to 600 ft. and speeds of80 knots. The timing of any ESI overflight is dependent upon the timing of the spring low tides. During afive-hour interval of time centered on the peak low tide, a portion of the coast is flown and categorized in theterms of the ESI scale. Mapping only during this interval of time ensures the proper delineation of tidal flatsand allows the maximum amount of the intertidal zone to be exposed and evaluated. ESI classifications aredenoted directly onto 1:63,360 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maps. Additionally, small changes in theshoreline, such as inlet positions or new man-made structures, are drawn onto the basemaps. The finalcomponent of an ESI survey is the ground verification of the classifications made during overflights. Dependingon logistics, representative examples of each ESI category are surveyed on the ground. The maps used in thefield are then digitized by teams of geographers, and the digital shoreline is updated to reflect the observationsmade during the survey. For the Aleutians East atlas, the ESI shoreline types from the existing hardcopy ESIatlases of Bristol Bay and the southern Alaska Peninsula, which were produced in the 1980s, were digitized andintegrated with a newly acquired biological database. The intertidal habitats of the Aleutians West CoastalResource Service Area (CRSA) were mapped using two systems: (1) the ESI shoreline ranking scheme, and (2)the Coastal Habitats shoreline ranking scheme. The shoreline of Unalaska Island was classified using the ESIranking system during overflights conducted by an experienced coastal geologist on 30 June-3 July 2000. In thecourse of a typical ESI survey, a combination of observational scales is employed. Thetiming of any ESI overflight is solely dependent upon the timing of the spring low tides. During a five-hourinterval of time centered on the peak low tide, a portion of the coast is flown and categorized in the terms of theESI scale. Mapping only during this interval of time ensures the proper delineation of tidal flats and allows themaximum amount of the intertidal zone to be exposed and evaluated. ESI classifications are denoted directlyonto 1:63,360 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maps. Additionally, small changes in the shoreline, such as inletpositions or new man-made structures, are drawn onto the basemaps. The final component of an ESI survey isthe ground verification of the classifications made during overflights. Depending on logistics, representativeexamples of each ESI category are surveyed on the ground. In the case of Unalaska, ground-truthing locationsincluded: the north shore of Beaver Inlet near Ugadaga bay; Summer Bay; Iliuliuk Bay; Dutch Harbor; the

northern and eastern shores of Amaknak Island, and Captains Bay. The maps used in the field are then digitizedby teams of geographers and the digital shoreline is updated to reflect the observations made during the survey.The shorelines of all other islands in the Aleutians West CRSA, from Attu to Umnak, were mapped at a scale of1:250,000 by the same coastal geologist using the more general Coastal Habitat classification system. Overflightsof these islands were not conducted, hence the separate mapping scheme. While interest remains high inconducting traditional field-oriented ESI surveys for these islands, budget considerations and logistical factorssuch as fuel staging, a short field season, habitation, and helicopter availability must be addressed. The mappingdone in the Coastal Habitat classification scheme is based on field experience gained in the Unalaska mappingeffort, National Imaging and Mapping Agency (NIMA) 1:250,000 topographic maps, USGS bulletin series 1028(1951-1971) and local expertise. These classifications are not field checked. The categories in the CoastalHabitat scheme are similar to those included in the previous Aleutians West CRSA Resource Inventory atlas.However, the Coastal Habitat scheme improves on the previous work in that individual beaches are mapped asdistinct coastal habitats.

The Coastal Habitat mapping scheme is based on the same factors andprinciples as the ESI mapping system; however, because it is not a field survey based mapping scheme, itprovides less resolution. It should be noted that the Coastal Habitat mapping scheme is for estuarineenvironments. For each ESI code definition below, the associated ENVIR code is referenced in parentheses. TheESI rankings progress from low to high susceptibility to oil spills. To determine the sensitivity of a particularintertidal shoreline habitat, the following factors are integrated: 1) Shoreline type (substrate, grain size, tidalelevation, origin); 2) Exposure to wave and tidal energy; 3) Biological productivity and sensitivity; 4) Ease ofcleanup. Prediction of the behavior and persistence of oil in intertidal habitats is based on an understanding ofthe dynamics of the coastal environments, not just the substrate type and grain size. The intensity of energyexpended upon a shoreline by wave action, tidal currents, and river currents directly affects the persistence ofstranded oil. The need for shoreline cleanup activities is determined, in part, by the slowness of naturalprocesses in removal of oil stranded on the shoreline. The potential for biological injury, and ease of cleanup ofspilled oil are also important factors in the ESI ranking. Generally speaking, areas exposed to high levels ofphysical energy, such as wave action and tidal currents, and low biological activity rank low on the scale,whereas sheltered areas with associated high biological activity have the highest ranking.

Logical_Consistency_Report: A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attributeaccuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistencychecks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles,unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, wherethe data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjected

These data represent the boundaries of all the hardcopy cartographic products produced as part of the EnvironmentalSensitivity Index (ESI) for the Aleutian Islands, as well as digital data extents. Primarily, 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 USGStopographic maps were used to provide boundaries for cartographic products. In some cases, the polygons represent U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps that were re-tiled, moved, or extended to provide better cartographic coverageof the study area. Finally, polygons representing the outer extent of all digital data are included in this data layer.


Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The index polygons in this data layer were generated in Arc/INFO from the coordinates of the USGS 1:63,360and 1:250,000 topographic map corners. Some small amount of positional error may be present along the arcsforming the boundaries of these polygons, particularly away from the polygon corners. Some boundaries weredeveloped from pre-existing digital and hardcopy sources and reflect the positional accuracy of these originaldata. See the Lineage and Process_Description sections for more information on the original source data andhow these data were integrated or manipulated to create the final data set.

This data set contains biological resource data for alcids, shorebirds, waterfowl, diving birds, pelagic birds, gulls andterns in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Vector polygons in this data set represent locations of bird nesting, foraging, andrafting sites. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in relationaldata tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set comprises aportion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West CoastalResource Service Area (CRSA). These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI datainclude information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-useresources. Logical_Consistency_Report: A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attributeaccuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistency

checks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles,unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, wherethe data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjectedto a number of quality and consistency checks. In the process of checking for topological and database consistencies, new ID'sand RARNUM's or HUNUM's are also generated. The new ID's are a combination of atlas number, element number, andrecord number. In addition, the value used to represent the element is modified to reflect the type of feature being mapped. Inthe case of an element that is normally represented by a point or polygon, a value of 20 is added to the standard element valuefor mapping of linear features. In the case where an element usually mapped as a polygon is represented by a point, a value of30 is added to the regular element value. The RARNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number, so multiple atlasescan be combined and RARNUM's remain unique. RARNUM's are redefined on an element basis, so "resource at risk"groupings will contain only a single element. HUNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number.

Data used to depict bird distribution for this data layer came from a number of sources: personal interviewswith resource experts from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) in Anchorage and with locals who hadexpert knowledge; Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game's Most Environmentally Sensitive Areas maps and HabitatManagement Guides; Aleutians East and West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA) management plan; andinformation from the Audubon Christmas bird count. Information gathered from the interviews and other mapswere compiled onto 1:250,000 scale USGS topographic maps. Digital data were either used exactly as provided,or the information from the coverages was transposed onto the topographic maps by hand if the format inwhich it was received was not compatible with the ESI data format. Following the data compilation phase,several sets of completed maps were sent out to the resource agencies for review, and edits were made based onrecommendations by the resource experts. Concentration information varied, and therefore for some speciesand locations, descriptive terms such as "HIGH", "MEDIUM", or "LOW" were used, while for others,numerical counts of nests or individuals were used. In many cases, concentration information was provided byresource experts.

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: In addition to the geographic data layers, six relational attribute or data tables, BIORES, BREED, SEASONAL,SOURCES, SPECIES, and STATUS, are used to store the complex biological data in the ESI data structure. Thegeographic data layer containing biological resource information (in this case, BIRDS) is linked to the BiologicalResources table (BIORES) using the unique ID and the lookup table BIO_LUT, or it can be linked directly usingRARNUM. The ID is a unique combination of the atlas number (for the Aleutian Islands atlas, the number is 72), anelement/layer specific number (BIRDS are layer 1, FISH are layer 2, etc.), and a unique record number. TheRARNUM represents a unique combination of species, seasonalities, concentrations, and source information. For eachof these groupings, a number is generated. That number is concatenated with the atlas number to create a "resource atrisk" number that is unique across atlases. BIORES and the other relational data tables are described below in detail.See the Browse_Graphic section for a link to the entity-relationship diagram, which describes the way these tablesrelate to the geographic data layers and other attribute tables in the ESI data structure. Due to the complexity of therelational database model, the data items are also post-processed into a flat file format. This table, called BIOFILE,may be used in place of the relational files described below to ease simple data queries. The items in the flat file areELEMENT, SUBELEMENT, NAME, GEN_SPEC, S_F, T_E, NHP, DATE_PUB, CONC, JAN, FEB, MAR, APR,MAY, JUN, JUL, AUG, SEP, OCT, NOV, DEC, BREED1, BREED2, BREED3, BREED4, BREED5, RARNUM,G_SOURCE, S_SOURCE, and BREED. All of these items are the same as their counterparts in the individual datatables described below, except the BREED1-BREED5 and BREED items. BREED is a newly generated variable usedto link to the BREED_DT data table, a modified, more compact version of the relational BREED data table.BREED1-BREED5 give a text summary of when each life stage occurs within the associated map object. The lifestages referred to are the same as those listed in the Detailed_Description of the BREED data table. The link to theBIOFILE may be made through the BIO_LUT, using ID to link to RARNUM, or BIOFILE may be linked directly tothe RARNUM in each of the geographic layer's attribute data tables. As mentioned, BREED_DT is an auxiliarysupport data table to the flat file structure, which allows the user to do searches based on month for seasonal breedingactivities. The link from the flat file to BREED_DT is the BREED item. A second supporting data table is SOURCES.This is the same as the source file described above, and the link from the flat file is both G_SOURCE and S_SOURCE.It should be noted that although the flat file eases data query, it is not a normalized database structure, and actualupdates performed by the states and other responsible agencies should be done using the relational data tables. This data set contains biological resource data for alcids, shorebirds, waterfowl, diving birds, pelagic birds, gulls andterns in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Points in this data set represent locations of bird nesting sites. Species-specificabundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in relational data tables (describedbelow) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set comprises a portion of theEnvironmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource ServiceArea (CRSA). These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include informationfor three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Logical_Consistency_Report: A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attribute

accuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistencychecks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles,unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, wherethe data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjectedto a number of quality and consistency checks. In the process of checking for topological and database consistencies, new ID'sand RARNUM's or HUNUM's are also generated. The new ID's are a combination of atlas number, element number, andrecord number. In addition, the value used to represent the element is modified to reflect the type of feature being mapped. Inthe case of an element that is normally represented by a point or polygon a value of 20 is added to the standard element valuefor mapping of linear features. In the case where an element usually mapped as a polygon is represented by a point, a value of30 is added to the regular element value. The RARNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number, so multiple atlasescan be combined and RARNUM's remain unique. RARNUM's are redefined on an element basis, so "resource at risk"groupings will contain only a single element. HUNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number.

The data source used to depict bird nesting locations was the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) BeringianSeabird Database. The positional data were used exactly as provided, and the attribute data were converted to aformat compatible with the ESI data format. Following the data compilation phase, several sets of completedmaps were sent out to the resource agencies for review, and edits were made based on recommendations by theresource experts. Concentration information was numerical counts of nests or individuals, where available, andunknown otherwise. In many cases, concentration information was provided by resource experts.

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: In addition to the geographic data layers, six relational attribute or data tables, BIORES, BREED, SEASONAL,SOURCES, SPECIES, and STATUS, are used to store the complex biological data in the ESI data structure. Thegeographic data layer containing biological resource information (in this case, NESTS) is linked to the BiologicalResources table (BIORES) using the unique ID and the lookup table BIO_LUT, or it can be linked directly usingRARNUM. The ID is a unique combination of the atlas number (for the Aleutian Islands atlas, the number is 72), anelement/layer specific number (BIRDS are layer 1, FISH are layer 2, etc.), and a unique record number. TheRARNUM represents a unique combination of species, seasonalities, concentrations, and source information. For eachof these groupings, a number is generated. That number is concatenated with the atlas number to create a "resource atrisk" number that is unique across atlases. BIORES and the other relational data tables are described below in detail.See the Browse_Graphic section for a link to the entity-relationship diagram, which describes the way these tablesrelate to the geographic data layers and other attribute tables in the ESI data structure. Due to the complexity of therelational database model, the data items are also post-processed into a flat file format. This data set contains biological resource data for estuarine, benthic, and pelagic fish in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.Vector polygons in this data set represent locations of fish concentration areas. This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI)data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). Data used to depict fish distribution for this data layer came from several sources: personal interviews withresource experts from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Anchorage, and with locals havingexpert knowledge; Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game's Most Environmentally Sensitive Areas maps and HabitatManagement Guides; and Aleutians East and West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA) management plan.Information gathered from the interviews and maps were compiled onto 1:250,000 scale U.S. GeologicalSurvey (USGS) topographic maps. Digital data were transposed by hand onto the topographic maps since theformat in which they were received was not compatible with the ESI data format. Following the datacompilation phase, several sets of completed maps were sent out to the resource agencies for review, and editswere made based on recommendations by the resource experts. Only areas of high fish concentration wereincluded in this data layer.

Thegeographic data layer containing biological resource information (in this case, FISH) is linked to the BiologicalResources table (BIORES) using the unique ID and the lookup table BIO_LUT, or it can be linked directly usingRARNUM. The ID is a unique combination of the atlas number (for the Aleutian Islands atlas, the number is 72) anelement/layer specific number (BIRDS are layer 1, FISH are layer 2, etc.), and a unique record number. Sources of data used to depict invertebrate distribution for this data layer came from personal interviews withresource experts from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Anchorage, and with locals havingexpert knowledge; Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game's Most Environmentally Sensitive Areas maps and HabitatManagement Guides; and Aleutians East and West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA) management plan.Information gathered from the interviews and maps were compiled onto 1:250,000 scale USGS topographicmaps. Logical_Consistency_Report: A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attribute

This process includes multiple automated logical consistencychecks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles,unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, wherethe data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjectedto a number of quality and consistency checks. In the process of checking for topological and database consistencies, new ID'sand RARNUM's or HUNUM's are also generated. The new ID's are a combination of atlas number, element number, andrecord number. In addition, the value used to represent the element is modified to reflect the type of feature being mapped. Inthe case of an element that is normally represented by a point or polygon, a value of 20 is added to the standard element valuefor mapping of linear features. In the case where an element usually mapped as a polygon is represented by a point, a value of30 is added to the regular element value. The RARNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number, so multiple atlasescan be combined and RARNUM's remain unique. RARNUM's are redefined on an element basis, so "resource at risk"groupings will contain only a single element. HUNUM's are also modified to include the atlas number.

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: In addition to the geographic data layers, six relational attribute or data tables, BIORES, BREED, SEASONAL,SOURCES, SPECIES, and STATUS, are used to store the complex biological data in the ESI data structure. Thegeographic data layer containing biological resource information (in this case, M_MAMPT) is linked to the BiologicalResources table (BIORES) using the unique ID and the lookup table BIO_LUT, or it can be linked directly usingRARNUM. The ID is a unique combination of the atlas number (for the Aleutian Islands atlas, the number is 72) anelement/layer specific number (BIRDS are layer 1, FISH are layer 2, etc.), and a unique record number. This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data forAleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Some of the spatial components of the biological data sets are developed using regional experts who estimateconcentration areas. It is difficult to estimate the positional accuracy of such data, except to state that they arecompiled on hardcopy basemaps with a scale of 1:250,000. The rest of the spatial components of the biologicaldata sets are developed from pre-existing digital sources and reflect the positional accuracy of these originaldata. See the Lineage and Process_Description sections for more information on the original data source andhow these data were integrated or manipulated to create the final data set. Note that biological resource data bytheir very nature are considered "fuzzy", and this should be understood when considering the positionalaccuracy of vector digital objects representing these resources.

Aleutian Islands Coastal Resources Inventory and Environmental Sensitivity Maps: SOCECON (SocioeconomicResource Points and Lines)







This data set contains human-use resource data for Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA) boundaries, mineral sites,airports, boat ramps, marinas, and Coast Guard stations in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Vector points and lines in thisdata set represent human-use site locations and boundaries. Location-specific type and source information is stored inrelational data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data setcomprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians WestCRSA. These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include information forthree main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Logical_Consistency_Report: A multi-stage error checking process, described in the above Attribute_Accuracy_Report, is used to verify both attributeaccuracy and logical consistency throughout data production. This process includes multiple automated logical consistencychecks that test the files for missing or duplicate data, rules for proper coding, GIS topological consistencies (such as dangles,unnecessary node, etc.), and ORACLE(r) to ARC/INFO(r) consistencies. A final review is made by the GIS manager, wherethe data are written to CD-ROM and the metadata are written. After the data are delivered to NOAA, they are again subjectedto a number of quality and consistency checks.

Completeness_Report: These data represent a synthesis of expert knowledge, available hardcopy documents, and digital data on mineral resources,airports, boat ramps, Coast Guard Stations, and marinas. Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The spatial components of the SOCECON data sets are developed from pre-existing digital and hardcopysources and regional experts. It is difficult to estimate the positional accuracy of such data, except to state thathardcopy data were compiled on basemaps with a scale of 1:250,000. Process_Description: Several data sources were used to depict human-use resources for this data layer: Alaska Dept. of NaturalResources, overflight observations, local expert knowledge, and CRSA Management Plan. Digital positionaldata were used exactly as provided, and the attribute data were converted to a format compatible with the ESIdata format. Hardcopy data and local knowledge data were digitized off of 1:250,000 scale basemaps. Resourceagencies confirmed the accuracy of the boundaries during review.















Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: In addition to the geographic data layers, two relational attribute or data tables, SOC_DAT and SOURCES, are used tostore the complex socioeconomic data in the ESI data structure. The geographic data layer containing socioeconomicresource information (in this case, SOCECON) is linked to the Socioeconomic Resources table (SOC_DAT) using theunique ID and the lookup table SOC_LUT, or it can be linked directly using HUNUM. This data set is a compilation of faults mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and published in USGSbulletin series 1028 (1956-1971). These bulletins are the last published attempt at mapping structure and stratigraphyof the Aleutians on an island-by-island basis. Only faults that manifest themselves on land were included in the USGSreports. Faults were transcribed from these bulletins onto the ESI maps. On the ESI maps, the faults are portrayed aslinear features, with no map indication of their type (normal vs. thrust). This data set comprises a portion of theEnvironmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource ServiceArea (CRSA). These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include informationfor three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

Purpose: The fault data were collected, mapped, and digitized as part of a general assessment of the geophysical hazards presenton the Aleutians and the Alaskan Peninsula.

This data set contains point locations of geothermally active areas as compiled by Motyka et al., 1993. Because of thevariety of geothermal activity present at any given site, each site has been mapped according to the dominant style ofgeothermal activity (i.e. water dominated sites, vapor dominated sites, or sites of known subsurface activity). It isimportant to note that at any given site, a combination of vapor, water, and subtle indicators of subsurface geothermalactivity is most likely present. This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data forAleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). These data identify the marine andcoastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats,sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

Completeness_Report: This data set is a condensed version of the information presented in Motyka et al., 1993. In the original work by Motyka etal., geothermal sites were presented in a table listing all observed geothermal features (i.e. fumeroles, mud pots, hot springs,warm springs, steaming ground, etc.) at each location. As such, each site had a unique combination of geothermal activitytypes. To avoid mapping 56 individually attributed points, each site is mapped according to the dominant type of geothermalactivity. Hence, the spatial data set produced from the Motyka et al. table has less detail than the original compilation.

In Motyka et al.'s 1993 Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) report, "Geothermal Resources of theAleutian Arc," a table of 56 known sites of geothermal activity is provided. The table includes site name,location, and the range of geothermal activity observed at each site. Geothermal activity was observed at eachsite as combinations of fumeroles, crater lakes, hot springs, warm springs, geysers, geothermal wells, mud pots,and steaming ground. However, because Motyka et al.'s compilation resulted in 56 sites with 56 uniquecombinations of geothermal activity, the table was simplified for mapping. Based on the types of activitypresent, sites were classified in one of three mappable categories: 1. Vapor dominated sites, 2. Water dominatedsites, or 3. Subtle indicators of subsurface activity. Location and dominant geothermal activity information wasentered into a .dbf file, imported into ArcInfo, and overlaid as point features atop previously scanned andgeoreferenced 1:250,000 USGS basemaps. Each geothermal site appears on the hardcopy maps as a yellowtriangle containing a V, if vapor dominated; W, if water dominated; or S if the site is marked only by subtleindications of subsurface geothermal activity.

This data set contains point locations of active volcanoes as compiled by Motyka et al., 1993. Eighty-nine volcanoeswith eruptive phases in the Quaternary are mapped as points centered in the active caldera or volcano summit.Volcanoes with a number of satellite vents and/or cones distributed around the main caldera or summit are given aunique identifier so it is clear that geothermal activity is likely to be found away from the point on the map. Differentvolcanic morphologies (Strato, Composite, Sheild) and eruptive histories are not noted in the digital data set, thoughthis information was originally included in the Motyka et al. publication. This data set comprises a portion of theEnvironmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Aleutians East Borough and Aleutians West Coastal Resource ServiceArea (CRSA). These data identify the marine and coastal environments and wildlife. The ESI data include informationfor three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

Purpose: The locations of active volcanoes along the Aleutians Arc were mapped as part of a general assessment of thegeophysical hazards present.

Completeness_Report: These data represent a synthesis by Motyka et al., 1993, of expert knowledge and available hardcopy reports. The data areregarded as complete with respect to the locations of known volcanic calderas. The data set presented here includes onlyvolcano location and name, whereas Motyka et al.'s original work includes morphology, eruptive history, magmatic systemcharacterization, and gross mineralogical properties.


Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: It is difficult to estimate the positional accuracy of the data, except to state that each volcano's latitude andlongitude, as published in 1993 by Motyka et al., were compiled and plotted on hardcopy basemaps at scale of1:250,000 and 1:63,360 (in the case of Unalaska). The coordinates provided in Motyka et al., 1993, were of theeruptive center within the caldera, if visible; the center of the caldera, if no eruptive center was visible; or thesummit of the volcano, if no caldera was present.

In Motyka et al.'s 1993 Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) report, "Geothermal Resources of theAleutian Arc," a table of 89 volcanoes with known Quaternary eruptions is provided. The table includes name,eruptive history, composition, morphology, and location of each volcano in the Aleutians Arc. Name andlocation information was entered into a .dbf file, imported into ArcInfo, and overlaid atop previously scannedand georeferenced 1:250,000 USGS basemaps. Each point representing a caldera or volcanic summit location,and having satellite cone and/or vent activity, was given an Identifier "P" in the attribute table.
