Two Komodo dragons have mauled a fruit picker to death after he fell out of a tree in an orchard in eastern Indonesia, in a rare attack on humans by the world's largest lizard.

The man, Muhamad Anwar, 31, was found bleeding from bites to his hands, body, legs and neck within minutes of falling out of a sugar-apple tree on the island of Komodo and died later at a clinic on neighbouring Flores. The giant lizards had been waiting for him under the tree, according to a neighbour, Theresia Tawa.

Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) are the largest monitor lizards in the world, weighing up to 90kg and growing as long as 3m. Because they are large and predatory, they are even known to eat the occasional human. There are only 4000 estimated to still live on the three Indonesian islands where they are found. Because of this small number, they are in danger of extinction.

In December of 2006, Flora, a female Komodo dragon at Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom laid a clutch of eggs, some of which hatched into healthy offspring. Normally, this wouldn’t be a noteworthy event, except Flora had not been kept with any male dragons, so how her eggs were able to develop is a challenging question.

It could be useful to understand the mechanism behind the hatching of these eggs, presumably without fertilization by a male, as it might be important in helping insure the survival of the dragon population.

Earlier in April of 2006, at London Zoo, another UK zoo, Sungai, who is also a Komodo dragon, had a clutch of four eggs hatch which were also all males. It had been two years since her last known contact with a male.

Based on what you have learned about meiosis in humans and what is known about these dragon egg hatchings, figure out a plausible way in which clutches 1 and 2 could not have had a father. Be consistent with what you know about mitosis and meiosis in vertebrate animals.
