Pastor Jed’s Message
Friends:
People are familiar with the FAA-mandated safety announcement that’s read at the beginning of every commercial flight, usually when the plane is being pushed back by the ground crew. I’ve noticed that very few people pay any attention at all to that script, which is always the same and which the flight attendants don’t read with much passion or verve. “Say it like you mean it.” Do we ignore that an-nouncement because it’s rote or because it reminds us that something could go wrong during the flight? Probably most of us think of it as evidence that the flight is actually going to take place, which is always in doubt until the airplane is moving, especially at O’Hare.
Do you hear anything of spiritual value in that announcement? I do. The part I’m thinking of the part where they talk about the possibility of losing cabin pressure. In that case, what will happen? An oxy-gen mask will deploy above each seat. At that point what are you to do? Make sure that the elderly or the infirm or the very young or others who might require some assistance have placed their masks properly on their mouths? No. They instruct you to fasten your own mask securely over your mouth. Isn’t that interesting? With all the other people who might need help, you’re told to look out for #1 first. The announcement is very clear about that: help yourself before you try to help others.
It makes sense: you’re not in a position to help others unless you’ve helped yourself. You’re of no use to someone who needs help if you can’t breathe. It’s a directive to engage in self-care. That’s why I’d say it has spiritual value.
Every once in a while, during our prayer time together, someone offers a prayer for the caretakers of those who are in our prayers. I think that’s a powerful prayer, and that it shows great insight. It’s a reminder that we all need to be nurtured and sustained in our faith, whether we are being cared for or are caring for.
We’re called to be good to others. There can be no question about that. You can’t get very far in the New Testament without that being perfectly clear. But we need to be good to ourselves, too: we need to see ourselves as children of God, just as we see others as children of God.
We have to secure our own oxygen masks before we can help others with theirs.
Peace and Love,
Pastor Jed

argo’s Message
Vacation Bible School is now over and our 47 children all had a great time at the Surf Shack! Thanks to all my adult and youth leaders, over 30 in all, who volunteered and made this year’s VBS a great success! A spe-cial thanks to the “guys” who helped take down and setup again the Summer Sanctuary!
Thanks to all who donated items from the Wish List for our Vacation Bible School program, the Surf Shack: Cath the Wave of God’s Amazing Love! We couldn’t do the week long program without you!
It is that time of year again, planning for the 2016-2017 Church School year. We have openings for the fall in different grade levels. Maybe teaching the entire year is too much for you, so think about being an assigned Substitute (8-10 Sundays per year). If you are interested in helping with our Christian Edu-cation program, please call Margo at the Church Office.
There will be a Teacher’s Meeting and Luncheon on Sunday, August 28 after the 9:00 service.

From the Council Moderator “Uh-oh – here he goes again…” I have not taken an official poll of how many people have said or thought that when they see a message from me or see me line up to give an announcement in church. I can say with relative certainty that it’s more than a few. And I get it. It seems like I am always asking for something. And I might roll my eyes if that’s all I saw from someone else too. I try to be mindful of that. I know how much of a struggle it is to give and give and never have it seem like enough. Whether that is at work, as part of an organization, or just life in general – can’t it ever just be enough? Why do they always want more? Why don’t they appreciate all that I do give? That appreciation is something I think I – and we as a church – can do more of. And so I’m asking for something again, but it’s a bit different. I’m asking that you take a moment to recognize someone for all that they do for our church. Thank them for being an usher or a lay reader. Thank them for being a Sunday School Teach-er. Thank them for serving at coffee hour. Or just thank them for being there and being a part of this church community. I need to do that on an individual basis as well, but I will take the opportunity here to express my appreciation for all that everyone has given. The response to our Giving Tree was tremendous. The attendance at the re-cent camping event was phenomenal. The presence of so many at our service each Sunday makes our church a welcoming and inspirational place. I appreciate it all – and I thank you for it. Joel Williams

Fall Rummage Sale October 14th & 15th It’s hard to believe it is August already ! It’s time to start thinking about getting the kids ready for school. As you start to sort through fall clothing to see what they have outgrown since last fall why not pack up all your family’s outgrown clothing and donate it to the fall Rummage Sale. Just put items in boxes, which makes for easier storage at church, label the boxes “clothing” and drop them off at the church. We ask that you place only clothing items in the boxes. That way we can store them away until the fall sale. Household items can also be dropped off (please keep them separate from clothing). We ask that your donations are clean and in working condition. Toys and games should be complete (not missing any pieces or bro-ken). As a reminder, we do not accept large furniture as we just don’t have the space to store and display them.
The Fall Rummage Sale is set for October 14th and 15th. If you have any questions, please con-tact us.
Kris Franks and Virgie Anthony
Church Events
It’s not too early to think about the upcoming church auction. We are in the planning stage of our 5th annual auction, which will be held on November 5th. The previous 4 auctions have raised over $35,000 for the church operating fund. The auction is one of the largest fundraisers for the church. We have had a wide variety of donated items and contributions in the past and need them again this year to make the auction a success. Please consider donating items for the auc-tion now. If necessary, we will make arrangements to pick up and store your items until No-vember. Contact Gary Doolittle, 847-395-3828, if you have questions.
Thank you The Auction Committee

DID NOAH FISH? A Sunday school teacher asked, "Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark ?" "No," replied Johnny. "How could he, with just two worms."
