A great way of spending some time with children would be to have them show you around the school to see the examples of the work they have done to try to achieve their personal bests. This process might be every bit as informative and insightful as a parent teacher interview. NAPLAN Reports Mr Danielewski has included some trend data that supplements the data issued earlier this week. In addition, all student written reports will be sent to their classrooms today. Literacy and Numeracy Charts NAPLAN year 3 for years 2008 to 2018

Year 3

From a low base in 2008 significant program and professional

development over the years has allowed us to have an overall

upward trajectory of improvement.

Definitely a challenging area of work for our school

and the nation.

Year 3

Dear Parents I have provided below a graphical representation of our NAPLAN results for both years 3 and 5 over the period 2008 to 2018. The graphs represent our school’s performance against similar schools to Holland Park, the Queensland State School’s overall score and the National score. Five strands are covered: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctua-tion, and numeracy. Our score is represented by the blue line. Whilst variations (dips and rises) may occur within some years of testing it is important to look at the overall long term trend. Regards Edward Danielewski (Deputy Principal)

FROM OUR STUDENT LEADERS

Hi, my name is Henry. I am the chess vice captain and I have been participating in the Holland Park chess program since year three. On Thursday mornings in the library, myself and others play fun drill, practise tactics, hear from experienced players and have a great time. I would strongly suggest chess as a non contact sport and the Holland Park chess program is a great place to start.

Henry G. 6SE Hi, my name is Rianna R and I am the senior Band Captain for 2018. To me it is not a ‘role’, it is an honour and a privilege. Being the band captain helps me to express my love of music. As the band captain, I help our conductor, Mr Bryer, to hand out music and notes. I also help setting up and packing up in the morning practices.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Content and Language Integrated Learning in Physical Education Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an internationally recognised approach to teaching a language and a subject simultaneously. Mr Matt Walker, our physical education teacher, has been trialling the teaching of physical education lessons by providing instruction to students in prep and year 1 using the Japanese language. Students have been participating positively throughout the variety of skills that are being taught in P.E. During the lessons, Mr Walker uses a range of Japanese language in relation to movement, directional instructions and colours. Risako Yamashiro, who has been scaffolding students’ understanding of the Japanese language during the P.E. lessons, has supported him during the lessons. Students are thoroughly enjoying the experience that engages learners and supports their content and language learning simultaneously.

Typing Tournament Our school has subscribed to an online Typing Tournament that helps to rewire kids’ brains, giving them correct muscle memory and enabling them to type efficiently. It works for both keyboards with physical keys and mobile devices with virtual keys. Motivation is developed as users succeed at the progressive challenges. Remember, regular practice is the best approach so encourage your child to use their login details to access the program. Julia Whittaker Head of Curriculum

COMMUNITY NEWS CONT’D

*DONATIONS REQUIRED- LADIES CLOTHING*

As representatives for Beyond DV, a local charity that sup-ports women and children affected by domestic violence, we are once again putting the call out to the Holland Park school community for donations of good quality women's clothes, shoes & accessories. We would also like items to be in very good condition. We will be running our next series of personal development workshops for domestic violence survivors in October, so we would like to collect donations in the last two weeks of this term. These donations can be dropped off to the 1SR class-room in C Block (next to the Admin building) or the PYM classroom in the Prep building. At our workshops, we will have Cate Massi (in house stylist at Indooroopilly Shopping Cen-tre), talking to the ladies about what styles/colours will suit them, how they can get the most out of their clothes etc. Cate will then help each lady put together a few outfits from clothes that have been donated to our charity, which the ladies will then take home with them. Many of the ladies have fled from insterstate with virtually nothing. Others have told me that, with the extreme stress, they have put on or lost weight so the limited clothes they have no longer fit them. None of the ladies have money to buy a new wardrobe. If you have any queries, please contact me via the charity's email [email protected] Thanking you Carolyn Robinson
