I am writing this President’s Message from an extremely unusual location for the President of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery: from my house in Wisconsin, USA. Moving to the United States was not a career direction that I had planned, and I greatly miss my colleagues and friends in Ottawa and across Canada, but the move was an opportunity I felt I couldn’t pass up. I would like to thank the Society for allowing me to continue in my role as President despite this move; I have been involved in the Society for almost two decades, and will continue to be involved for the rest of my career from my vantage point across the 49 th parallel (at least for now). I especially want to thank Patrick Gullane and Donna Humphrey for their unwavering ongoing support through this interesting career “detour”! One of the highlights of the past year for me was returning to Ottawa for the 68 th Annual Meeting on May 11-13 th . Our President, Patrick Gullane and our Scientific Program Chair, Fred Kozak, put together a wonderful scientific and social program in my favourite Canadian city. Invited guest speakers Martin Birchall, Dan Alam, and Joe Kerschner, along with notable Canadian Otolaryngologists from our “Celebrating Our Own” program, provided fascinating and cutting edge lectures. The Poliquin Resident Research Competition showcased, as always, the future of our specialty. Finally, the social program allowed the attendees to visit our beautiful nation’s capital and gave our membership the opportunity to catch up with networking and social opportunities. It truly was a resounding success, academically, socially, and financially. Congratulations to Pat and Fred! half-day of time should allow us to continue to showcase this excellence within our Society without having to turn away very deserving work. I hope the experiment meets with the approval of the membership. The Society remains committed to advancing Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery in Canada, and to delivering value to our members. The Society’s journal, the Journal of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, through the stewardship of the “dynamic duo” of Dr. Hadi Seikaly and Dr. Erin Wright, continues to publish high quality peer-reviewed articles, now in an open-source format. Our many subspecialty and special interest groups within the Society continue to advance various initiatives for the improvement of our specialty. It is all done through the volunteer efforts of our members of council and committees. I would especially like to thank those who come in early for the council and committee meetings; the earlier start to the AGM will force us to move these meetings earlier as well, which in many cases will result in more time away from work for these members. The Society greatly appreciates their sacrifice in this regard.

Finally, I know all the members of the Society value the incredible work that Donna Humphrey does in the running of our Society. We truly couldn’t do it without her. I would especially like to thank Donna for her continued support despite my missed deadlines and late responses as I learn about medical practice in the United States and build an Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Department across 17 hospitals. Her patience and forbearance is greatly appreciated! I hope to see you all in Winnipeg in June 2015!

Martin Corsten, MD, FRCSCPresident

With Much Appreciation! The CSOHNS would like to thank all the Council and Committee members who have completed their terms of office. Without the help of our volunteers, the Society could not function!

Canadian Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Fund Dr. S. Mark Taylor, HALIFAX, NSPresidentThe COHNS Fund continues to thrive and we are now approaching the $1 million dollar mark thanks to ongoing member support and the renewed corporate support we have seen over the last few years. Once again this year Takeda Canada and Johnson and Johnson/Ethicon have each supported the Fund with a $25,000 grant which completely covers the two fellowship awards currently offered. We thank them both for their generosity and ongoing pledge of enhancing educational excellence for recent Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery graduates pursuing subspecialty fellowship training. Following our last board meeting in Ottawa, it was decided the holdings of the Fund would be moved from Heward Investment Management in Montreal to MD Management. This decision was made for two reasons; the first being the reduction of management fees possible with MD management. Secondly, this will give the current and future Presidents of the Fund the opportunity to work locally with an advisor given the national presence of MD Management. This transfer is currently in progress and will soon be completed.I would like to remind members of the availability of funding for active members of the CSO to do a mini-fellowship in their area of interest. Also, the Global Health Stipends have been very popular with residents travelling to underserviced areas and two of these are available each year. In general, our Society seems particularly interested in this endeavor and I would remind members that donations can be specifically earmarked (no pun intended) to this cause. The future of the COHNS Fund remains bright. I would encourage you all to have a look at the CSO/Fund website and to pay particular attention to the circle of donors section. I would challenge you to get your name on this list with the full knowledge that your donation will support our specialty moving forward. Thanks once again for supporting the COHNS Fund and I look forward to seeing you in Winnipeg!

S. Mark Taylor, MDPresident, COHNS Fund

A New Fundraising Endeavor In addition to personalized lab coats, the Canadian Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Fund plans to make available for purchase beautiful pens and pen/pencil sets. This Culmer product has a great “hand-feel” and was very well received at the Victoria Annual meeting where it was distributed as the delegate gift. It is black and silver with a twist mechanism to open and close. “COHNS Fund” with logo is engraved on the top half.

The cost is $25.00 + tax for the pen and $45.00 + tax for the pen/pencil set. All net profits will go to support the Fund’s various activities including global outreach, fellowship and mini-fellowship grants.

Both the COHNS Fund lab coats and the pens make great gifts.

Look for the order forms to be available on the Society’s website (COHNS Fund section), starting October 15, 2014.

2014 Annual Meeting Wrap-UpDr. Patrick Gullane, TORONTO, ON Immediate Past PresidentDear Members, Colleagues and Friends,First, let me express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of you for your enthusiastic and passionate support of this year’s most successful Society meeting in our magnificent Capital, May 11-14, 2014. This was the 3rd largest attendance at our Society’s meeting with >375 registered participants. It was a privilege and honour to have served as your President of this prestigious society. As I have said on many occasions, we are at cross-roads in medicine where technology is playing a greater role in patient care. In that spirit I had selected last year’s theme -“Prevention and Innovation - A Challenge for the Future”. Our three internationally known faculty presentations captured the theme and provided us insights into to how to think outside the box as we continue to adapt and explore new technology, review the role of transplantation, understand the future of regeneration and address the need for prevention with a vision for the future of surgery and our specialty in the 21st century.I am indebted to my guests of honour, Drs. Ralph Ruby and Ellis Scott and our guest speakers, who could be described as the “Who’s Who” within each of their domains, Dr. Martin Birchall, Dr. Daniel Alam and Dr. Joseph Kerschner for their outstanding presentations that traversed the selected theme of our meeting. The scientific program, under the stewardship of Dr. Fred Kozak and his committee, was balanced, creative and full of nuances. I am indebted to Fred who is to be applauded for his leadership in the initiation of many new innovations in the scientific sessions including the sessions entitled ”Celebrating Our Own”.As I look into the future I see many opportunities and feel confident that our society is firmly established. However, we have numerous challenges that we must continue to address including job opportunities for our trainees, challenges and turf battles with other specialties and finally, maintaining the profile of our specialty as we move

President’s Message continued from page 6

forward in the revolutionary and expensive era of technology. You, the membership, are our future and it is hoped that united we can be stronger as we transverse the terrain of our wonderful chosen specialty.

For the first time, we held the President’s dinner on the Monday evening. This year’s special guest speaker was our own Dr. Roberta Bondar, one of the most celebrated Canadian astronauts. She is both inspiring and a remarkable role model for all of us in medicine. In her presentation she shared her insights and experiences with space travel and brought to our attention some of the after effects of this journey on the human body. I believe that the opportunity to meet this iconic, remarkable neurologist and astronaut was evident after her presentation when we witnessed a line up of members who sought her autograph and wanted a photo with her.

A special thanks to our local arrangement chairs Dr. Martin and Ms. Karen Corsten for their planning and coordination of a most attractive and exciting social program which, as we found, was full of surprises. Their personal connections in Ottawa helped enormously in coordinating the many successful social events.

The CSO-HNS is in a very strong position with superior members dedicated to leadership roles that continue to enhance the profile of our specialty and Society. Next year’s meeting, under the leadership of your President Dr. Martin Corsten, will be in Winnipeg and with the local arrangements committee of Drs. Gigi Osler and Paul Kerr I am confident that it will be exciting, stimulating and futuristic. The best way to predict the future is to invent it!

Again, my thanks to the Society members for your trust and for the privilege in having me serve as your President in 2013 / 2014.
