No, I am not planning to commit some act which will lead to my firing. Actually my ten week internship here at Asbury is coming to a close. I hope I got the chance to meet you during this summer. It was certainly a gift to meet and talk to so many of you. Im naturally an introverted person and I m not keen on sharing about myself. Howev- er, since Im gone now I will take this time to tell you a bit of my story. There were three big moments in my faith journey that occurred during my childhood and adoles- cent years (three is a biblical number afterall). The first occurred in fifth grade at a week-long summer camp in Georgia called Centri-kid. This certainly wasnt the first time Id heard the Gospel, but it was the first time that it stuck with me. I consider this to be the first time that I understood and accepted the good news of the message of Christ. The second moment occurred at another summer camp called Revive, this one in Alabama. I was in seventh grade at the time and I specifically remember a powerful worship service that was filled with ambient guitar, pounding drums, and def- initely some Holy Spirit. Something about the emotion during this service brought me to realize that faith is a relationship and part of that relationship is the deliberate seek- ing of God through spiritual practices (prayer, worship, scripture, etc.). After this expe- rience I began to work some of those practices into my daily life. The third big faith moment took place in Quito, Ecuador during the summer before my senior year of high school. While kicking around a soccer ball, speaking in broken Spanish, and mixing concrete by hand with others in my youth group I realized that faith is an ac- tion. More importantly, I learned that to have faith means to show love and to be in community with others— both Christian and non-Christian. A theme for my life at the moment is breadcrumbs”. In other words, I take a step and grab the breadcrumb in front of me, and then I look up for the next breadcrumb and take another step and grab the next one, etc. I took a step and came to UCF, which lead me to the Wesley college ministry, which lead me to be a counselor for a sum- mer and a half at Warren Willis UM Camp, which lead me to spend another month in Ecuador, which lead me to be on the Wesley leadership team at UCF, which lead me here to Asbury UMC in Maitland to be a pastoral intern. What a wonderful breadcrumb this summer has been for me. I am truly grateful to have gotten the opportunity to serve and worship with this church. What an encour- agement you all have been! I fully believe that God has used this summer to equip me for the next breadcrumb in my life. WELCOME TAMARA ALEXANDER, DIRECTOR OF TRADITIONAL WORSHIP MUSIC: Though born in Newburgh, NY, Tamara's childhood home is Long-wood, Fl. She grew up in the United Methodist Church watching her mother lead music and worship through organ and choir directing. While her family attended Zellwood UMC, she recalls that "some of my fondest memories are of singing with my family in church!" She is a graduate of Winter Park High School and the Hartt School in Connecticut where she attained a Bachelor's Degree in music (vocal performance). In addition to working on church staffs in music ministry, Tamara has worked with public school students in mu-

sic, preparing many to perform musicals and training many vocalists as well. She has also been leading traditional worship singing at Asbury for the past year. She is a busy mother of 2 young children, Braeden (3) and baby Aislyn, and wife of Lance. She writes, "I’m excited to create new ensembles and ex-periment with a fresh and challenging repertoire! The youth are such an im-portant part of the church, therefore, I am eager to start a youth vocal ensem-ble along with other performance groups! I hope with God’s help, to bring us together musically and spiritually through song!" Welcome, Tamara!

SEEING GRAY IN A WORLD OF BLACK AND WHITE

During Wednesday Night Live there will be a video study called “Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White” by renowned Methodist Pastor and Theologian, Adam Hamilton, which advocates seeking common ground in an increasingly polarized and often divisive world. Hamilton’s approach, first published in 2008, is even more applicable in 2019. Hamilton encourages us to unite scripture, tradition, experience and reason in the Wesleyan tradi-tion of practicing scriptural and social holiness in every aspect of our lives. In the study, we will explore the interpretation of the Bible, Beliefs, and the Spiritual Journey and how, as Christians, we can apply these to every aspect of our journey, including the Workplace, Business, Church, Social/Sports Events, Politics, Ethics and Morality. For more infor-mation please contact David Vatcher at [email protected] or 407 616 8514. Please let David or the office know if you plan to join the class as we need to order books which cost approximately $14.

COMMUNION FOR SHUT-INS: At Asbury we believe that all people are invited to be a part of what God is doing. One way we live out this truth is through sharing com-munion. If you know of a church member who would like to receive communion and is unable to come to church, please let the church office know at 407-644-5222.

Our PETAL PUSHER team thanks you for all the contributions of small vases and cards! Keep them coming! We would love to have you join us if your Mondays are free and you’d like to pass on the Love of Jesus that you know so well to people in our church family who have recently experi-enced a difficult time. Florist experience is not necessary nor is craftiness with scissors and glue! Just a heart full of love and a desire to serve our Lord. Call Christen Cavanaugh at 321-663-0983 or the church office if you feel that nudge from Above!

ASBURY WORSHIP CHOIR

LOOKING FOR SOME ENTHUSIASTIC SINGERS

Please take a moment to answer these simple questions: 1. Do you like to sing? 2.Can you sing with other people?

3. When you sing, do people smile for the right reasons? If you can answer “yes” to at least two of these questions, then this may be the time for you to test drive the Asbury Worship Choir. A test drive allows you to attend a few rehearsals, sit with people who enjoy singing and decide if this ministry is right for you. Join us in the choir room every Wednesday night at 6:45 pm. We rehearse until 8:15 pm. Rehearsals begin August 14th. Feel free to call the church office or talk with any choir member for in-formation. We’d love to have you join us in leading our church body in worship. Tamara Alexander-Music Director

SANCTUARY ANGELS: We are pleased to have 3 teams of 2 volunteers each to alternate straightening Asbury's sanctuary Mondays after Sunday church services. WANTED: Two more volunteers to be a team. It's an easy job to collect attendance sheets, replenish supplies in pews & straighten sanctuary. If you would be interested please call Betty Kendall 407-951-6479 or email at [email protected].

2019 ALTAR FLOWER CALENDAR The 2019 Flower Calendar is available in the narthex for those wishing to give altar flowers in honor of or in memory of a loved one. Please print your name and how you would like the bulletin dedication to read. PLEASE PRINT THE INFORMATION LEGIBLY. If you select a date that already has a name by it, please contact the person to see if they would like to share the cost of the altar arrangement. Alternatively, a separate arrangement can be placed at the lectern in the sanctuary. Please notify the office if you are sharing the arrangement so the bulletin dedication can be properly noted. Flower arrangements are $50 for the two arrangements placed on the altar ($25 per arrangement if split.) THE CARING MINISTRY You only have to be a part of the Asbury community a short time to understand why ours is known as a “very caring church.” One of the many ways this is manifested is through our Caring Ministry that thoughtfully provides food for church families who have lost a loved one and have a service at our church. This is a very impactful way that we can pass on the love of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Joan Kessler has faithfully led this ministry at our church for countless years. Joan is updating her list of individuals she can call upon when she needs a plate of sandwiches, a cake, some fruit, etc. when the Caring Ministry is needed. Please consider adding your name to that list right now. You can call Joan at 407.628.1093 and give her your contact information or you can email it to the church office at [email protected]. Please know that a small effort on your part can have a lasting impact on a hurting family.

CHAPEL MINISTRY We are in need of help with our Chapel Ministry at the 2 assisted living facilities which we attend to bring services to these precious seniors. We need people who can fill in occasionally to do a message, play the piano and be a song leader. Please come to pass the love of Jesus on to these precious seniors. The residents look forward to us coming to minister to them and truly enjoy the services. Please call Susan Hoke 407-637-6857.

SUNDAY MORNING GREETERS An important aspect of our Sunday services is being given a warm, welcoming greeting as you enter our church. The one greeting is an opportunity to engage with fellow worshippers and any visitors. Their questions can be answered and general information given about church programs and Sunday school classes. A greeter can invite the visitor to return. I am looking for additional volunteers who have a limited amount of time and availability but would still like to participate in a service to the church. Greeting is the answer for you. Call the church office or email Sally Zarnowiec at [email protected] if you are interested in this fun and enjoyable service to the church. Thank you.

MISSION BILLBOARD HUNGERFORD RED BAG NEEDS: These bags are used to supply food for the Hungerford School Pantry. We will continue to distribute bags on the 3rd Sunday and return them on the 4th Sunday for delivery to the school shortly after. There is a box in the narthex marked

Sizes would be for children ages 6 thru 11. READ 2 SUCCEED PROGRAM: There is a great need to assist NEW Readers to Succeed at Hungerford Elementary School. For info please contact Helen Cross at [email protected]. It is a simple process to register COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS: Asbury has 2 teams that cook and serve dinner at the Coalition for the Homeless. Want to join? [email protected]. HOME REPAIR NEEDS: Family Promise of Orlando needs all who can help with minor home repairs. More info: [email protected] THANK YOU: Dear Fr iends, your Mission Team to El Salvador left August 10th to deliver food from you. I must deliver the deepest thank you to all who financially or prayerfully helped this team get to El Salvador. The Van Horns provided the wonderful Spaghetti Dinners on the 21st of July. Not only was it a great meal, it provided the funds to pay for the food we will be delivering in your name. There are 8 of us leaving on August 10th and we ask your prayers for a successful trip. We honor the God of plenty who has allowed us to represent Asbury United Methodist Church. Our deepest thanks. We will be posting some pictures as we develop our relationship. BOX TOPS PLEASE keep on bringing box tops to church. Lake Orienta school really appreciates them. Basket is in the narthex hallway. No soup labels please.

INK CARTRIDGE RECYCLING Please bring your empty ink cartridges to church. Small ink cartridges only please. We recycle! Collection boxes are in the narthex.

PUBLISHING NEEDS Asbury has so many wonderful ministries happening on and off our campus. We would love to be able to spread the good news to all of our congregation. If you are in charge of one of those ministries and you have some-thing happening that you would like to publicize, please send a short announcement with the pertinent infor-mation to [email protected]. We can only let the people know if we know. Thank you
