Dear Parents, Teachers and Boys,Happy new school year! On behalf of PTA please accept my warmest congratulations to all Grade One students and parents in joining this big Diocesan Family. education and to understand more about the psychological health for our boys, the PTA organized two parents’ forums in the school year. The rst parents’ seminar was held on 3rd December 2011, titled “親子「正」策及精神健康” by Dr. May Miao (苗延琼醫生) and Ms. Annie Ho (何念慈小姐).The second seminar was held on 26th May 2012. we were delighted to have Dr. Ng Kee On, an experienced clinical psychologist, to share with us the topic of “Child and Adolescent Sexual Development – If Education is the Answer, What is the Questions?”. Both seminars attracted more than 100 parents in attendance and the feedback was very encouraging.

Parents’ ForumThe PTA held two parents’ forums in October and December last year to enhance communication between the parents, teachers and the school. We received positive feedback from parents. Their questions and comments were well appreciated and forwarded to the school management team for review. These were mainly on matters related to teaching methods, lunchbox issues and on school bus and traffic issues. Many parents commented that this open and transparent communication channel was useful and constructive.

Cultural and Welfare ActivitiesThank to Ms. Sharon Lu’s e orts, various cultural activities were organized by the PTA during the year, including discounted tickets and priority booking for performances of Hong Kong Arts Festival’s World of WearableArt (WOW) in Jan 2012 and The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s “Field of Dreams” in Jan 2013. There were also 2 on-site performances at school last year, namely “MTR x Hong Kong Repertory Theatre: Master of Railway Safety” offered to G1/2/3 in Dec 2011 and the Sherlock Holmes show o ered to G 4/5 in June 2012. In addition, complimentary tickets were o ered to DBSPD families to enjoy a HKPO’s concert by Thibaudet and Markl Bolero on 8th June 2012.With the help of our Co-opt member, Mr. Henry Tong, the PTA had negotiated some discount privileges for our boys in some leading book stores and music shop in town, namely Cosmos Books, Swindon, HK Book Centre, Kelly & Walsh, BookanZen, T.H. LEE (天利行) and Tom Lee Music.

Soccer Fun DayThis is a new event this year for our parents and boys. Credits should be given to Mr. Joe Ngai, Dr. Peter Lam and Mr. Sydney Mok for their kind organization of the 3 soccer practice sessions during the year. Each practice attracted more than 60 participants. Besides the friendly match for

our parents, a quali ed soccer coach was present to teach our boys soccer skills. I am con dent that they all enjoyed the happy Sunday afternoons. We will keep this a routine function of the PTA.

School Tra c and Lunch Sub-CommitteesThe School traffic to make matters go as smoothly as possible Sub-Committee, chaired by Dr. Rocky Lam, faced a very challenging year this year. More than 6 meetings together with an open forum for the school bus issue were held and every member had contributed a lot to make matters go as smoothly as possible. Special thanks to Mr. Nicky Lee for his kind co-ordination. We promise to do our best in defending the interests of our boys and parents in the coming school year.

The Lunch Sub-Committee, chaired by Dr. Peter Lam, is responsible for drafting the monthly lunch menu and monitoring the quality and nutritional values of the food provided by our new food caterer, Hearty Meal. A number of food tasting sessions and kitchen visits were also organized for our parents throughout the school year. A questionnaire was designed to collect the opinions and suggestions from the parents/students which was re ected to the caterer accordingly.

DBSPTAL-PD Facebook GroupUnder the leadership of Mr. Joe Ngai, we created a facebook group under the name “DBSPTA-PD”. All (and only) PTA members are welcome to join this private Facebook group. We are having more than 680 facebook friends so far. To join the group, please send your Facebook email address to [email protected] or [email protected] (with the student’s name, class and class number for ver cation). We will add you as a “friend” and invite you into the group. We look forward to seeing you on our Facebook page!

PTA Website (http://www.dbspd.edu.hk/dbspta_pd/)The PTA webpage is linked with the school website. A new website with added functionalities was designed and maintained by Mr. Stephen Chang this year. We received lots of great feedback that our website has an user-friendly layout where parents can view the photos and information of our events in a very convenient way.

Volunteers’ Tea PartyThroughout the year, over 400 parents contributed their valuable time to help in various functions, especially those helping in the library, the School Fete, School Cleaning Day, Open House, the two sub-committees, G6 Graduation

Dinner Party, and being our story moms and dads, etc. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parent volunteers, PTA Executive Committee members, Teachers’ representatives and in particular, our Headteacher Ms Phyllis Lo for their tremendous support and contributions. Certificates of Appreciation were distributed to parent volunteers at the end of the school term and a Parent Volunteers’ tea party was held on 13th July 2012 to acknowledge their unfailing e orts throughout the year.

Grade 6 Graduation DinnerThe last event of the year was the Grade 6 Graduation Dinner which was held on 14th July 2012 at Mira hotel to celebrate the graduation of our Grade 6 boys and also to thank the teachers and the parents for their tremendous efforts in the DBSPD educational journey. Big thanks to the concerted e ort of the Graduation Dinner Organizing Committee chaired by Ms. Julie Chow, coordinated by Dr. Raymond Sin and the fellow team members plus the class representatives. The evening was filled with joy and excitement echoing the enthusiastic, creative and talented performance of the graduates. It was an evening to be remembered.

The Way ForwardThe primary role of PTA is to facilitate communications among parents and to foster effective home-school collaboration. The success of PTA depends on the active

participations of both parents and teachers. It is through teamwork, enhanced communication, and mutual understanding that we can reach our common goal in promoting a warm and sustainable nurturing environment to our boys. I would l ike to enl ist your continual participation and support to both the school and PTA.

I am an old boy of the school and connected to the school for nearly 30 years. After 4 years of service to the PTA as a parent representative, I have learned a great deal about the challenges our parents face today as well as the school’s intent and determination to educate our boys well. I am fortunate enough to work with our dedicated exco-members, parents, teachers who share one common dream “the better the school, the better our boys”.

Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Terence Chang, Ms. Phyllis Lo and Mrs. Emily Yip for their endless contribution in nurturing our next generation.

In the end, may I wish you and your boys, to have an enjoyable and successful journey here. I can assure everyone of you that you won’t regret your time spent at DBS.

Message from the Vice-Chairperson

I had the privilege of serving as the vice-chair of the PTA this past year, and it was a pleasure to support our PTA Chairman Tony Tsui, and our Headteacher Ms. Lo throughout the year. Although I have been a member of the PTA committee for the past three years, it never ceases to amaze me the dedication and the care that our teachers and parents put into the school. From Garden Fete to all the Fun Run to the Outing to the seminars, it was really a team e ort that made all these wonderful events happen.

One of the highlights this year was the starting up of our PTA soccer team. What star ted as a dinner conversation, became a regular outing where twenty to thirty families would come out on Sundays to kick around in the school field. Seeing all

the kids and their fathers (and mothers on the sidelines) having fun together was extremely gratifying. I look forward to even more games next year, as well as other new ideas.

As I look back on the year, it wasn’t without its share of challenges, from incidents at Garden Fete to the school bus discussions towards the end of the year. I am proud of

how PTA was able to act as a bridge between the parents and the school, and I am grateful at how everyone pitched in (teachers, PTA committee, and parents) to help come up with solutions and suggestions. This is what makes the DBSPD family special.

The 2011-2012 school year has been a year of great blessings. DBSPD has grown from strength to strength and reaped many success in numerous undertakings. I hope all parents would share my joy to see our PD boys bene ting from the broad curriculum and the great variety of activities o ered by our school.

Having the trust and support from parents, I am pleased to see that all areas on school administration, curriculum, and student development are evolving at a steady pace. With a broad and balanced curriculum to unfold students’ diverse potential, and e ective and e cient administration support to lay a rm structure for school development, we have set our way to forward.

With the completion of the new IB Complex, Auditorium and St. Augustine’s Chapel, besides having greater admiration of our campus, I am sure you would also agree with me that the provision of these state-of-the-art facilities will enable us to better cater to our boys’ diverse talents, interests and learning styles, as well as to uplift their mind, spirit and faith. It a signi cant step forward to enable the school to further cultivate a rich and diverse heritage for future generations of students to come.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the DBSPTA-PD, especially the Chairman, Dr. Tony Tsui, for their excellent work in organizing the PTA activities and their support in all fund-raising events this year. Without their wisdom and hard work, all those functions would not have been held so successfully. I look forward to their continuous support in the coming school year!

Dear DBSPD Parents:I would like to congratulate the success of Diocesan Boys’ School Parent-Teacher Association (Primary Division) in the year of 2011-2012. I must thank the PTA (PD) for organizing many interesting activities for parents and our boys, for launching new initiatives e.g. PTA (PD) homepage and parents (and boys) soccer matches. I am especially delighted to see the healthy development of DBSPTA-PD Facebook as a platform of communication, with growing number of parents signing up as members.

My sincere thanks to the Chairperson, Dr. Tony Tsui for his great leadership; the Headteacher, Ms. Phyllis Lo for her unlimited support to the PTA(PD); all parents and teacher members for their devoted time and e ort to DBSPD.

The annual DBS School Fete and Garden Fete Lunch were successfully held on the 13th November 2011. As the representative of the PTA-primary division and a member of the Organizing Committee, I was deeply impressed and touched by the tremendous support from over hundred parent volunteers, whom sacri ced their precious time to play with their boys. All of us had made this yearly event a successful one again! We all sweated out during the day and had served over a thousand guests during the Fete Lunch. More important, friendship was made among helpers during the service. We all look forward to another memorable School Fete in 2012.

1st Parent Seminar:親子「正」策及精神健康 3rd Dec 2011

We have two seminars this year. The main theme of both seminars was to help deepen parents’ understanding of their children from various perspectives. On 11 December 2011, we invited Ms Annie Ho (何念慈, Registered Clinical Psychologist) and Dr. May Miao (苗延琼醫生, Specialist in Psychiatry) to be our guest speakers. The topic was “親子「正」策及精神健康”. Both speakers have extensively experience with children, adult and families on various psychological issues. The talk had given us great advices on how to bring up our children with good psychological health. About 100 parents attended this seminar. On 26 May 2012, we invited Dr. Kee-On Ng (Clinical Psychologist) to talk about a di cult topic “Child and Adolescent Sexual

Development: If education is the answer, what are the questions?” The talk encouraged parents to look at sexual education positively and emphasize more on the education aspect than on sex. We should take this educational opportunity to communicate with our children, but effective education (especially that on sex issues) needs real communication and it builds on a strong relationship. About 160 parents registered. I am sure the PTA for next year would love to hear your suggestions on other interesting topics.

Since its establishment in 2000, the PTA has worked very closely with the school to create an environment in which our boys not only can excel in their abilities, but also mature in their characters. It is with this in mind that the PTA has developed a wide array of cultural programmes:

To facilitate: The PTA has established relationships with major cultural groups in Hong Kong to select performances on a regular basis, often with good discounts, for our families. Our collaborators have included the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Ballet, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. This year, close to 1,000 tickets were arranged through the PTA.

To interact: Master classes, workshops, and short performances are arranged on campus during school hours for our boys. These activities provide our students with an opportunity for face-to-face interaction with artists in a more intimate setting. In December 2011, the education department of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre was invited to stage a play promoting MTR safety awareness, and the most recent performance on campus was on 15 June 2012, when a group of professional actors presented an interactive English drama, Sherlock Holmes, to our boys.

To immerse: In addition to their art/music lessons, competitions, and daily practices, our boys can also benefit from having exposure to a diverse range of cultural/learning experiences. The PTA has organized, and will continue to o er, art exhibitions, book fairs, eld trips, etc. to the boys. We hope these small-scale events will make their lives at DBSPD more colorful and memorable.

***Not many primary schools have the resources and the flexibility to organize multiple arts and cultural activities outside of the regular curriculum. The unfailing support from Ms. Lo, Mrs. Yip, and all the teachers at DBSPD is the key. Their commitment and dedication have inspired us all. Our heartfelt thanks also go to all the parent helpers. It is our common mission to plant little seeds of arts and culture. We hope that these seeds will cultivate creativity, stimulate minds, develop appreciative hearts, and someday inspire our boys to understand who they are.

School Cleaning Day and Annual Health Talk 9th Jan 2012

I am so glad I can be a PTA member to serve our school again. This year I was responsible for two events - “Cleaning Day” and “Tra c subcommittee”.

For cleaning day, the feedback was marvelous that over a hundred parents participated in the event. I did worry so much at the beginning, especially for the crowd control and the smoothness of the whole event because of such huge number of the parents. Luckily and happily, everything was so smooth and all the parents were very helpful and showed greatest support. Both our children and the parent did have a great time.

As regard to the Traffic subcommittee, everything was uneventful until Poon’s decision to withdraw from the local school bus market from this academic year. It was quite a shock to everyone of us and a new bus company was chosen to serve us through a tendering process - The Concord Bus Company. A signi cant rise of the fee was

resulted and some parents decided to take the nanny bus service. In the coming months, we will do our best to deal with the di erent parties, try to monitor their charges/services and to smooth the tra c condition due to the new arrangements.

I was extremely busy with my work last year. So, I must express my deeply thanks to a fellow parent, Mr. Nicky Lee, who hold many meetings and took the duties for me during the second half year.

It is my pleasure to work in the executive committee of PTA for the second year. I am honoured to be the convenor of the lunch subcommittee which composed of 80 parents including nutritionists and health professionals. Our activities include the drafting of the monthly lunch menus, monitoring the quality, hygiene and standard of meals and providing feedbacks and recommendations on various lunch issues.

This has been a challenging year with a new caterer in service this school year and with the installation of new kitchen utilities, on site portioning is possible since February 2012. 9 lunch tasting sessions had been organized for 160 parents in November 2011. A follow up lunch survey by parents and 660 students on the food quality, quantity and preference was completed and available in our PTA website and facebook. Based on the survey results, the ratios of fruits: juices: desserts that accompanied the main meals were adjusted to 2:2:1. 4 kitchen visits and a few lunch checking visits had been conducted to allow parents to have better understanding of the kitchen environment and operations and food standard. Parents are able to voice out their opinions directly to the

caterer and via our participation in the lunch and tuckshop committee meetings.

It has been a successful year with the tremendous support from parents and school. With our heartedly thanks to Ms. Lo, Mr. Sammy Ho and all teachers in the provision of healthy meals to our boys and all parents for your comments and recommendations.

We then descended on Lau Fau Shan (流浮山) for lunch and spread ourselves over two restaurants for a quick meal. After the “re-fuel”, we headed o to Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery (鄧族屏山文物館) and Heritage Trail in Yuen Long to appreciate some of Hong Kong’s local heritage. Ping Shan is one of Hong Kong’s most historically significant regions and the Tang Clan settled there as early as the 12th century. After some two hours of sightseeing (and walking outdoor), we were then transported back to our more familiar 21st century city surroundings, a.k.a. Mongkok, where we disbanded. We all headed home with an appreciation of the centuries old relics that is only tens of kilometers away, a taste of the weather and sweat that the full summer ahead would bring, and many fond memories of the day’s activities.

As coordinator for the outing, I am most grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the parents that made this event so enjoyable, and indebted to the advices and guidance from fellow PTA Exco members that made the organization of this event so smooth.

Henry WongConvenor for PTA Family Outing

The PTA Family Outing was held on 1st May 2012. This year we had about 800 parents, teachers, school sta , and students joining this annual event for a day of fun and fellowship. With some fine weather and the service of 13 full size buses, we headed o to the planned destinations. Forty- ve minutes of travel and rain shower later, we arrived at Hong Kong Wetland Park (香港濕地公園), where we spent the morning learning about Hong Kong’s wetland ecosystem and enjoying both the outdoor wildlife and the exhibitions in indoor air-conditioned facilities. Many rst time visitors were surprised (and marveled) at the magnitude and scale of, as well as the range of displays at the Wetland Park. The earlier rain while we were on the bus proved to be the perfect coolant for an otherwise warm, albeit overcast day.

This year, I am very happy to take the assignment to help the Class 2012 Grade 6 Graduation Dinner organization. This duty not only gave me a pleasant experience in work-ing with the wonderful G6-parents, but also provided me a learning opportunity to prepare for next year organization because my son will be Grade 6 next year. The Dinner party was held on 14 July 2012 at Mira Hotel. Its theme was “Wild West” with all students put on “Cowboy” outfit. The party was well received by over 500 Grade 6 students and their families, 38 teachers and 17 VIP guests.

I must thank all members of the Organization Committee (OC) who have contributed huge e ort to pull everything together in making such a BIG night for everyone. The OC consisted of Ms Phyllis Lo (Headteacher), myself and 18 G6-parents: they are:

Parent Volunteers’ Tea Party13th Jul 2012

As an old boy myself, I hoped to contribute my effort back to the school and to get more involved with my son’s overall learning experience in DBS when I ran for the PTA Exco last September. And what a year of great learning it turned out for me also! I feel I’m growing with DBS again along with my son while implementing in a variety of colourful school events and PTA-organized activities amidst an action packed schedule.

I got to marvel at the excellent running of the school, by Headteacher Miss Lo and her team, from the vantage point of leading the communication e ort: making announcement for key events, ensuring open channels for dialogue between parents and school, and building out our online platforms. One key task for me this year was to revamp the PTA website, which I hope made it easier for you to keep abreast of what’s going on. The new layout aims to provide a seamless linkage between platforms, such as the school intranet and the PTA facebook group. I am also very happy to see that our community online is strong with parents sharing and discussing actively on topics relevant to our boys.

I’ve tremendously enjoyed this experience, and treasured the friendships from fellow enthusiastic parents, led by PTA chairman Dr Tsui and other Exco members.
