MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

On behalf of the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors (a voluntary

group made up of various medical and community representatives) I would like to take

this opportunity to thank you for your continued support – past, present and future.

After all, it is the people of Newfoundland and Labrador who make it possible for us

to care for our province’s children right here at home.

Throughout this past year, as Board Chair, I have had the honour of working with the

wonderful people who make up our Janeway community. And it has been my privilege

to watch as we move forward with several major advancements in pediatric care. Even

more importantly, however, as part of a growing economy, I look forward to all of our

future projects as they will allow us to strive forward and keep pace with a booming

province and economy.

It is with pleasure that we present you with the following 2009/10 Annual Report.

HILARY WILLIAMS

Hilary Williams, a busy 14-year-old social butterfl y, charms everyone she meets —

especially those at Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre, who she has

come to know and love while being treated for bone cancer.

However, Hilary is more then a patient; she is also an ambassador for the many children

across Newfoundland and Labrador who are treated at the Janeway every day. In 2009,

she represented the province as she traveled to Ottawa and Orlando with Champions

Across Canada, a national Children’s Miracle Network program presented by Walmart

Canada. Then a few short months later, she represented the Janeway again as the

2009 Telethon Champion Child.

Hilary fi rst came to the Janeway ER at age 10 because of a pain in her arm. A routine

x-ray worried doctors, and within 72 hours she had a CT scan, MRI and biopsy. They

all confi rmed a diagnosis of osteogenic sarcoma. Doctors continued to act quickly and

started her on chemotherapy treatment. Several months afterward, Hilary underwent

a 10-hour surgery to replace the affected bone with a prosthetic, one of the fi rst

procedures of its kind at the Janeway. Now, Hilary only visits the hospital twice a year

and doctors do not expect a relapse.

DONATIONS AT WORK - EQUIPMENT

Donations at work – As a teaching hospital the Janeway continues its excellence in

child care while providing its staff with the tools to ensure that our medical students

become the skilled professionals that our children reply upon.

One of those tools is the Video Camera Tower, used predominantly for the evaluation

and treatment of orthopedic conditions or to examine the interior of a hollow organ

or cavity of the body. The Tower houses a small state-of-the-art, medical imaging

device - camera - called an arthroscope that is inserted into the affected area through

a small incision.

For example, in the case of knee surgery, the joint will not be fully opened, nor will the

patient have a six inch incision on each side of their knee. Instead there will be two

small incisions – one for the arthroscope and one for the surgical instruments being

used. Minimally invasive surgical procedures means shorter recovery times; less pain

post-op; less stress and anxiety on the patient and shorter or no hospital stays.

Benefi ting our young patients surgically, this equipment also offers an additional

teaching tool to our hospital and its medical professionals. During surgeries not only

does the surgeon see what is happening, those that are in the operating theatre can

also view the procedure on the Tower’s video monitor or screen. These surgical videos

and still photos can then be stored on DVD’s for subsequent classroom teaching and/

or medical research.

DONATIONS AT WORK - RESEARCH

Donations at work - Research is essential to improving the health and well-being of

our province’s children.

Throughout the Janeway high quality research is currently underway by pediatricians,

faculty and staff, offering immediate and long term benefi ts to improve the health and

well-being of our province’s children and their families.

With the number of research accomplishments expanding rapidly our skilled researchers

and clinicians have made great strides in their local and collaborative research projects

in areas such as – child development; cardiology; child protection; adolescent medicine;

oncology; newborn medicine; infectious diseases; respirology and rheumatology.

Dr. Paul Dancey, Janeway Rheumatologist, in conjunction with the National Institute

of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, made a breakthrough discovery in the study of auto-

infl ammatory disease. This discovery was instrumental in the diagnosis and treatment

of Jacob Whelan, the fi rst person in the world to be diagnosed with DIRA (a defi ciency

of important proteins within the body that help control infl ammation).

“Despite test results and Jacob’s deteriorating condition Dr. Dancey kept

forging ahead, searching for answers to Jacob’s illness through research and

consultation with colleagues. Our son Jacob is here with us today thanks

to Dr. Dancey and the Janeway.”

Donations at Work – Promoting the further education of its staff, the Janeway offers

professional development initiatives and staff educational bursaries, providing additional

tools to assist in the quality health care that our children receive.

Though the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation typically raises funds for medical

equipment and vital medical research, it is also important to continually fund educational

opportunities for our Janeway staff, allowing them to expand their knowledge and

enhance their clinical practices.

The Staff Education Fund has received many worthy applicants and have funded staff

attendance to programs/ conferences in the areas of Neonatal/ Pediatric Transport;

Adolescent Medicine; Cleft Palate-Craniofacial; Mental Health & Addictions; Diabetes;

Ophthalmology and Pediatric Surgery, just to name a few.

As a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a member of the provinces only Neonatal

Transport Team for the past 28 years, Agatha Howlett knows fi rst hand the importance of

continued education as it relates to the health care of our smallest patients. Attending

the Neonatal Transport Conference this past October offered transport professionals

an opportunity to learn new techniques and the latest advances in neonatal/ pediatric

transport from experts in their fi eld.

Upon completion of these various programs/ conferences Janeway staff then share

the information obtained to help advance the practices of their colleagues throughout

the health care system.

I HAVE TYPE III OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA

Before she was born Amber Lynn Bartlett was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

(a rare genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or

no apparent cause). Immediately following her birth on October 31, 2004, Amber was

x-rayed - she had 28 new fractures and evidence of old fractures that had occurred

and healed.

Today Amber is a very vibrant, very independent 5 year old who will be starting

Grade 1 this year. After surgery to help straighten her legs Amber began intensive

physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. She is now able to use a

walker, often making steps on her own without any type of aid. She can write her

name, feed herself, brush her teeth and, of course, is sure to let everyone know that

she can do everything on her own.

Amber’s family credits the staff of the Janeway Development and Rehabilitation Centre

for her many accomplishments. Amber is in excellent hands.

STAFF

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Thousands of children from across Newfoundland and Labrador arrive at the Janeway

Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre every year in need of medical attention.

Without you, our generous donors, we would not have the necessary tools to care for

these children. Without you, we would not be able to provide our province’s children

with the special care they both need and deserve. Therefore, on behalf of the Janeway

Children’s Hospital Foundation, I thank you for your continued support.

However, as the Janeway consistently evolves, we must stay up-to-date with the latest

in technologies, research and education in order to provide the best possible care. As

such, we have embarked on a number of exciting new projects, each of which will allow

the Janeway to become one of the top pediatric care facilities in the country.

We hope that you will continue to support our efforts, providing our local children’s

hospital with the best technologies and services possible.
