Sitting back with my mug of coffee and reading this newslet-ter, it truly makes me feel proud to be part of such a dynamic community.

Compiling this, for me, was a truly amazing experience.

“The Overview” has been creat-ed to give you a summary of all the wonderful things that your children with their teachers par-ticipated at the school and also an overview of things happening around the school.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

In turn, I would like to wish you all the best for the New Year.

In the beginning of the term a par-ents presentation of the Award was organised which was then followed by 4 similar presentations to the students. Students have already shown great enthusiasm for the return of the Award and the num-bers speak for themselves with over 300 registrations for all three levels of the Award. During this first term, 9 ORB Reg-

The School was very happy to re-establish its DofE Award Centre earlier this year, which once again allows the Award to be run by the School's staff. In doing so, the School wishes to take advantage of the its staff expertise and experience in the field and also to en-courage and promote bonding between students and staff beyond the classroom. This return to the School acknowledges the long and distinguished history of our School with the Award. The English School was the first to introduce the Duke of Edin-burgh's International Award to Cyprus following the sug-gestion of the newly appoint-ed Headmaster Mr. David H.

This year our application process once again ran smoothly, with many of our applicants already holding offers from (and not limited to) Bath, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, King’s College, Imperial, Queen Mary, UCL and War-wick, so our congratulations go to them, and well done on their success.

Our Cambridge applicants have now returned from their interviews, and are eagerly waiting for the University’s decision; we will keep you posted on this. Our medics are beginning to prepare for their interviews and we are keeping our fingers crossed for these applicants who have to go through what is often a very stressful process.

Looking ahead in 2016, we remind our students to login to their school email account on a regular basis. There is a great deal taking place again this year, so please ensure that you don’t miss any events and/or workshops that are relevant and useful to you.

Just before the school started our Year 1 and Year 2 students went to Troodos to Jubilee Camp. They took part in many dif-ferent activities aimed to build new friendships and develop some old ones.

These activities develop students’ self-confidence and self-esteem.

Bonding Activities

Years and later on in their adult lives. Already Year 1 have had an educational trip to Ktima Georgiades at the village of Skarinou where they had new experiences as well as good fun with their peers and members of the Pastoral Team. It was lovely to watch the juniors picking olives

form the olive trees and then using the olive mill in the old traditional way. They also enjoyed the donkey farm while listening to the people there talking about the use of these animals by farmers in the past.

Based on our commit-ment to offer our stu-dents an all-rounded ed-ucation, more education-al, fun and bonding activ-ities are being planned to take place during the year. We are constantly trying to think of new, creative ways to enhance our students’ develop-ment and prepare them to face challenges with confidence, in upper

Non-Physical Activity

All students need to attend games. Should any student not be able to engage in physical activity, the non-physical activity has been created so students can be educated about the importance of engaging in sports.

We have continued to develop and enrich the programme of activities that we would like to offer to our students this year, working with a number of spe-cialist coaches who have agreed to work with the PE Department. Following feedback from stu-dents, we decided to maintain the activities that were intro-duced last year, such as Martial Arts/Self –Defence, Greek/Cypriot Dancing, Yoga and Zumba. Our students have also requested more fitness classes and this year we will work with three additional coaches to pro-vide more options such as Body Combat, Functional Training and Body Balance. Of course, we will also maintain the “tried and tested” options of Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Bad-minton, Football, Softball, Ath-letics, Futsal, Hockey and Ten-nis.

Just like every year, the school honors our Founder Frank Darvall Newham, with two different ceremonies: one for the Lower School and one for the Upper School. During the Upper School, our guest speak-er was: Mr. Constantinos Christofides, Rec-tor at the University of Cyprus.

Over 170 students were awarded for their academic excellence. Musical interludes included: Athina Stavrou—Violin, “1st Movement of Concertino op. 12” by Ferdi-nand Kuchler, Julia Jenkins-Song, “Let it be” by John Lennon and Paul Mc Cartney, Marilena Antoniadou—Piano, “Danza de la moza donosa” by Alberto Ginastera and Alexandros Groutides—Guitar, “Oblivion” Improvisation.

Some information about Mr. Newham. Frank Darvall Newham was born in Leicestershire, England on the 6th March 1864. He gained a First Class degree in Theology at Cambridge University

and later, at the age of 36, came for the fist time to Cyprus. In 1901 he was appointed Inspector for Schools for the then Colonial Government and 6 years later, he became Chief Inspector, an office whose title subse-quently changed to Director of Educa-tion.

During his 1st year on the island, in 1900, he founded a school for boys. Initially there were just 13 boys but that school developed into what is now our wonderful School, The English School, with over 1122 boys and girls. He was Headmaster of the school for 36 years. In 1936 he hand-ed the school over to the Colonial Government, on condition that its essential character should be main-tained. He was a generous man who ensured that the school was open to pupils from all the communities and creeds of the island. It was Frank Newham who introduced football and hockey in Cyprus. He died in Kyrenia on his birthday in 1946 at the age of 82. His legacy, The English School, lives on.

A short trip to Fiction and Back

Other Activities

By Kleopatra Olympiou

On the 7th of November, in the distant realm that is the English Centre, a group of about 30 students walked up the wooden stairs of the building, and with each creak of the steps another creative mind entered Room 52. They formed an alliance of students representing the English, Greek, Turkish and Modern Languages De-partment, in a unified defiant meeting against the sci-ences… Well, not really, but it is fair to say that the 30 crusaders found comfort in each other’s presence, and, admittedly, the presence of fresh sandwiches, juice and marble cake. Yet the crusaders were not distracted by the culinary appeal of this mystical ceremony. They stayed true to their purpose; they were there to write, in a creative writing workshop led by award-winning Cypriot poet and short story writer Nora Nadjarian. The workshop’s promising name, “Creative Writing: Unlocking Your Imagination”, did not disappoint the eager crusaders, as it focused on the writing of short stories, combining theory and writing advice with writ-ing prompts and exercises. The happily fed crusaders were able to play with lan-guage, crafting imaginary situations where a dinner date went horribly wrong, a heart was broken, a baby ap-peared out of nowhere and libraries became threats and shelters. Ranging from moving to humorous, our Lan-guage Defenders’ responses quickly warmed the hesita-tion of some participants away, creating a happy envi-ronment where all could participate in an interactive game of (metaphorical) literary table tennis and ideas bounced around the room in respectful turn-taking. Constrained by time, Ms Nadjarian was forced to end this game, closing the workshop with a few readings of her own work and of the work of other writers. As she uttered the final words of her poem ‘Ledras Street’, a tremor went through the room. Our crusaders put aside their armour and quietly left the room, re-entering life in their capacity as ordinary humans, this time with a somewhat subdued, discreet, internalised passion for defending languages. As they left, Ms Economou, Ms Efthymiou, Ms Karaviotou, Mr Uzuner and Ms Neo-cleous (of the Greek department) smiled. For this day, at least, languages and literature had prevailed.

Attending a Debate at the EU House On Friday, 04th December 2015, five of our students attend-ed the debate at the EU House with topic: “The new generation discusses the refugee crisis – veto to racism” These five students, represented our school impecca-bly. They did us proud by asking the MEP’s challenging questions regarding the topic of racism, the media and the refugee crisis. They were not always happy with the MEP’s response and continued to probe for answers to their questions!

Center for Talented Youth Summer Camp The Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Anatolia College is the result of the stra-tegic partnership of three institutions with strong and long-lasting traditions in education and in service to society. The Stavros Nearchos Foundation (New York, USA and Athens, Greece), Anatolia College (Thessaloniki) and the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MA, USA) have joined forces in establishing a unique cen-ter for Greece, South Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The aim of CTY at Anatolia College is to identify and educate primary and secondary school students who possess special academic talents or skills, who stand out with their perfor-mance in and out of school or who share a common passion for learning and edu-cation above and beyond the confines of the school curriculum. An introductory program took place at our School on Sunday, December 6th from 10:30-15:30. Students of the ES Years 1-4 were invited and took part, to select one of the offered courses, full of exciting advanced material and of versatile teaching strategies, while parents attended a short (45 minutes approximately) information session at 10:30. Students found it fascinating as the photos portray.

Annual Blood Donation Blood Donation has been a traditional activity of the English School for more than 35 years. On Friday, 4th December 2015, the School organized the annual Blood Donation which took place in our Hall. It started at 8.30 a.m. and over 80 students and staff took part as donors.

Other Activities Our Year 1 group have been very busy in December month in raising money

or working on different initiatives to help those less fortunate than our-selves. On Monday, 30th November our 1M students had a Christmas Bake sale, raising EUR170.00. The week starting the 7th December our 1G students brought in blankets to be used by the babies in the Makarios III hospital and on the Friday 11th December our 1W and 1Y students held a very successful Christmas Bazaar raising EUR951.00. All proceeds were used to buy medi-cal equipment and very much needed bed linen for the pre-mature infant ward at the Makarios III Hospital. On the 18th December 2015 Year 1 groups went to the Makarios III Hospi-tal to deliver our gifts. It was truly an emotional, yet wonderful experi-ence. The students were allowed in groups of 10 to walk around the ward to see the little infants in their incubators. So many little babies being cared for, that will unfortunately will be away from home for Christmas. Juniors you have really made us proud! The love and care you all put into this initiative is truly amazing.

The Spirit of Giving

3 Jade walked to Makarios Hospital this morning with their Form Teacher and Head of Year to take gifts with the money raised from their Halloween bake sale. They bought four TV monitors for the children’s wards at the hospital, at the hospitals request. They were very well behaved and wished the children in hospital a Merry Christmas and gave them small gifts. Well done 3 Jade!!

Trying to bring a little joy to the hearts of the children in the Makarios Hospital, they bought some gifts and became Santa’s little helpers. The smiles obtained were priceless. Small pray: That this festive season, we are all blessed with health, happiness and prosperity.

The 8.00pm performance tickets sold out on the second day of announcing the tickets were available, that is ap-proximately 300 people attended the show. In light of this, a second performance was organized whereby over 120 people attended.

Some of the reviews received on the morning of the 18th December were:

It was an amazing night!

It was enjoyable and relaxed evening

It was an outstanding performance!

Listening to the Senior Choir singing Acapella made me emotional.

As we all work the last moment, coming to this Christmas Concert really put me in the Christmas Spirit. We continued signing in the car on our way home!

The event was co-organized by ESPA and Parents.
