Gippsland Technical School Opening

Last week, three of our Year 9 students were privileged to participate in the official opening of the Gippsland Tech School

which is co-located at Federation Training in Morwell.

Our students joined with others from a range of participating schools to undertake a number of activities designed to

showcase to James Merlino, Minister for Education, what the Tech School offers students across Gippsland, including

robotics and virtual reality.

Doctors in Schools

As most in our community would be aware, the Doctors in Schools program is now operating strongly here at Morwell

Campus on Wednesdays between 12:00 and 4:00pm. Appointments are organised through our Advocate team and our

Youth Worker, Cate Johnson.

We were thrilled to find that funding for this program will be continued through until 2021 which was announced in the

recent State Budget. This is of particular significance, as the program was very slow to be established at our school due to

challenges caused by being a rural school.

Kurnai College Annual Report

The 2017 Kurnai College Annual Report has been endorse and is now available to view on our Website.

Work Experience

Our Year 10s returned to school this week after two weeks out on Work Experience.

Most students had a very enjoyable, if challenging and tiring time, and some have secured part-time work, and even possibly

ongoing employment as a result of their placements.

The next step for Year 10s is to begin going through course counselling in preparation for Year 11. Sheryl Tangi, Year 10

team leader, and I met with the Year 10s on their return to talk about a more vigorous and accountable process for course

selection this year. Further information will be available to our learning community in due course.

2018 College Council Student Elections Nominations

Congratulations to Nathan Britt and Nerroli Hooimeyer (both at the University Campus) on their successful election to the

College Council as student representatives.

We hope your time as councillor will be enjoyable and productive.

A big Thank You to you both for being prepared to take on this important role.

Visiting Psychologist

We are very excited to announce that we have managed to secure the services of a visiting psychologist, who will be able to

see students with mental health issues, absolutely free of charge.

Students and parents who feel that they could take advantage of this service should contact Cate Johnson, our Youth worker.

Year 7 News ……….

Brainstorm Productions

Last Thursday, the year 7 and 8 students were lucky enough to see a live performance of Cyberia – a production on Cyber

Bullying. The performance was designed to show students what can happen when nice, ordinary people do mean or illegal

things to people online, that they regret. The students were all engaged in the performance and participated enthusiastically

in the question session at the end of the production. Below is a write up of the production by one of the year 7 students.

NAPLAN

A reminder that NAPLAN testing for all Year 7 students is on next week from Tuesday to

Thursday. All students have been exposed to practice NAPLAN questions and I am

confident that they will all do their best. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN,

please let me know.

Swimming

Permission forms for swimming (Terms 3 and 4) were handed out to all Year 7 students

last week. This is a compulsory part of the PE program and all students need to return

their forms as soon as possible. If the permission form has been lost/misplaced, please

let me know and I will arrange for a new one to be sent home.

Coolamatong Camp

Year 7 camp week is fast approaching. Please continue to make and finalise payments for this camp. Student attending camp

will be called together in week 6 to go over dietary requirements, medications etc. If you have any questions about camp

week, please forward them to me.

Students not attending camp will be participating in an alternate timetable at school.

Stop bullying

We are living in a world where some people think bullying is the only way to solve problems. If we keep bullying around us it ’s not

going to get better we must stop bullying because 4,400 teens commit suicide per year because they are getting bullied at school,

online and even outside of school. In a presentation I saw at school Ruby put bad things on the internet about some girls and then

she got cyberbullied and then she ended up with no friends at school, and she was scared that Sophie the girl she was bullying was

going to upload a picture of her with no top on and she was scared she was going to lose her reputation. Bullying can cause people

to cut themselves, starve themselves and it can make them commit suicide. People start to get bullied at age 10-18 years old. There

are over 3.2 million students who are victims of bullying per year and approximately 160,000 teens skip school per day to avoid their

bullies. We need to stop bulling because it’s not good for the kids and teens. It’s okay to dislike someone or even dislike someone for

no reason. But it’s not okay to disrespect, degrade, and humiliate that person so do not bully people.

Year 8 News ………. What’s coming up in Year 8!

Around the grounds…

It is great to see some of the awesome work that is being

done at Year 8 so it is only fitting to share it with you all

here:

Students from Year 8 have finished a key holder using

their own designs and skills learnt in wood tech. Great

stuff!

Camp

Permission forms for camp have been distributed. Expressions of interest will be

shown via the return of the permission forms so please return them by Thursday 10th

May. Making early payments is a great way to plan for its cost. Remember, assistance

can make events like this a reality rather than a dream so give us a call if you are

experiencing financial hardship and we will try to help where we can.

Sexual Education (Family Planning Victoria)

All Year 8 students will participate in a Sexual Education session arranged by Family Planning Victoria on Thursday 10th May.

While this may be a confronting and embarrassing issue for some, studies show that the more these issues are discussed,

the greater the awareness.

Swimming Program

A reminder that swimming program permission forms have been

distributed and need to be returned ASAP so the PE faculty can

begin planning for the sessions.

NAPLAN – doing my best on the NAPLAN test

Next week will be a huge week for Year 7 and 9 as they take their NAPLAN tests and those year levels not involved will be

expected to be mindful of the pressures some people may feel at this time and to respect their learning needs.

Year 9 News ……….

NAPLAN next week

Year 9 students are completing NAPLAN next week. Students have been preparing for

these assessments in their Mathematics and English classes. This preparation has

involved building up student’s skills in responding to a variety of question types and

completing sample questions. These skills will enable our students to do their best on

the NAPLAN test and are transferable across all their other subjects. Building up

these skills will provide a lasting benefit to students both for NAPLAN and beyond.

Positive Learning Behaviours

While the Year 9 students have generally been displaying positive learning behaviours consistently this year, moving into

Term 2 provides a good opportunity to remind all students that they are becoming leaders in our College and that their

behaviour needs to meet College expectations. Year 9 provides students with a great opportunity to build a solid foundation

for their learning skills as they start to transition into their senior schooling years. Keep setting high expectations for

yourselves.

Attitude to School Survey

Last week most Year 9 students completed the Attitudes to School Survey. This survey

provides the students with a chance to provide feedback on a range of indicators, from

feelings of engagement to the way work is differentiated to suit different learning styles

and levels. The College uses this information to improve the way we work with students

to provide a quality learning environment. Thank you to those students who have

completed the survey and to the teachers that gave up their classes for the survey to be

completed. Mr. Bennett will catch up with those students who were absent to complete

the survey over the next two weeks.

Online Suggestion Box

The Year 9 PBS leaders recently came up with the idea of creating an anonymous suggestion box for students to make

suggestions about improving the school. As a result, Mr. Dockley and Mr. Bennett have set up an anonymous online

suggestion box for all Year 9 students to use. In the short time it has been operating, the new tool has helped teachers be

more aware of the issues and changes students would like to see addressed. For example, students have suggested that “we

need more bins on the oval” and “we need more activities to do at lunchtime, like competitions between year levels”. Please

keep the suggestions coming.

Melbourne Discovery Camp

The Melbourne Discovery camp is on again in Term 4. A meeting to introduce the itinerary and details of the camp was held

last week and students seem quite excited by what the camp offers. Students are reminded to get in touch with Mr. Bennett if

they have any concerns about attending, scheduled activities, food on the camp or finances.

Work Experience

Congratulations to all the Year 10 students who attended Work Experience over the

past two weeks. We have had some fabulous reports from many of the employers.

One student has an opportunity for an apprenticeship in the future and some of our

students have the possibility of part-time work. We will soon be investigating VCAL,

VCE and VET courses and preparing for course counselling at the end of this term.

BrainSTEM Challenge 2018

There are two Year 10 girls teams that are participating in the BrainSTEM Health

Challenge over the next 8 weeks. The students have to come up with a project to work

on and they will be presenting their results to all other schools in June at a venue in the

Latrobe Valley soon to be announced. The two teams are Team 1 – Gabrielle Hines,

Stephanie Tumney, Stephanie Savige and Lucy Bertrand and Team 2 – Monique Powell,

Chloe Mifsud, Yasmin Tanti and Kayla Strickland. These students went to Florey Institute

on Tuesday and visited many of the research facilities.

Camp

School Council approved the Year 10 camp for Tasmania. All students have been given

the permission forms for the camp.

PBS

Students can now receive a cut out on their ticket for showing consistent positive behaviours regarding the school matrix by

their teacher. These tickets once filled in (all 20 cut outs) can cash the ticket in for $2 at the Canteen. Students are also

receiving postcards for displaying consistent behaviours for the four school pillars of Excellence, Relationships, Work Ethic

and Engagement. If the students complete five PBS they can exchange these for a movie ticket.

GPA Scores

The latest GPA reports are currently being filled out by teachers now and they will be available for viewing at the end of next

week. We hope to see some improvement from the last set of reports.

Music Update

Up and coming Music Performances…..

Students participating in the classroom and instrumental music

programs have been busily working towards this performance

throughout the semester. As part of each music course,

performance is an integral part of assessment where students get to

present the works they have been preparing to an audience.

This year, there will be three separate performances that will feature students at each of

their campuses. Each performance program will feature a combination of both group and

solo works, from students who have just started learning to play an instrument to those who

have been doing this for some years.

All family members are greatly encouraged to attend to encourage and support their

child. All performances commence at 6:30pm and will require a gold coin donation upon

entry.

Secondary School vaccinations in 2018

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students.

These vaccines provide protection against:

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent card

booklet coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, com-

plete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Latrobe City immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vac-

cine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to

local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2018 if you do not want

your contact details given to the Latrobe City immunisation service.

To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases

they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to bet-

terhealth.vic.gov.au

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under

20 years who missed scheduled vaccines. If students have missed vaccines, either in child-

hood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immun-

isation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

Information for Parents—Schools’ Privacy Policy

The Department has developed a new Schools' Privacy Policy and related documents for all Victorian government schools. The new Schools’ Privacy Policy will be implemented over term one of 2018 and will replace any existing privacy policies used by schools.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy informs the school community that information about students can be shared to fulfil the schools’ core functions of educating and supporting our students.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy establishes a clarified ‘need to know’ framework, where school staff share information about students with other staff who need to know as part of their role. This is consistent with Victorian privacy law.

For the detailed information, please go to:

Calling for feedback on the Youth Space Latrobe design principles

The Youth Space Latrobe project has been underway over the past few months. Young people have discussed what it is like to live in the Valley, what issues are important and what they think is needed in the Valley to help them thrive.

Led by our Youth Core Design Team, young people came together in February 2018 to workshop what activities and ser-

vices a new youth space could provide, where the youth space should be located, and explore design concepts. Some of the students at your school were involved in this process.

These workshops led to the creation of nine design principles that will inform the creation of a new Youth Space Latrobe.

The Youth Core Design Team would love to know the community's thoughts on these principles. A short, de-identified sur-

vey has been created to describe and evaluate the design principles.

We are seeking your feedback and your support in getting this survey out to your school community.

Once the design principles have been refined, they will be presented to the Victorian Government for consideration.

Click below to start the survey or follow this link: youthspacelatrobe.typeform.com/to/oeHLEt
