Greenpeace China was established in 1997 and is a registered charitable organisation in Hong Kong. Our long-term goal is to help China and the rest of the world to share a clean environment, withoutsacrificing the necessary economic development and standards of living. Environmental problems knowno boundaries. With one fifth of the world’s population, China is a major player in helping to create aclean and safe future for the next generations. We believe that we can play a big role in developing ourenvironmental advocacy work. Greenpeace China now campaigns on Biosafety, SustainableAgriculture, E-waste, Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Forest Conservation. We address theseissues based on our understanding, respect, concern and experience in the environment andsocio-economic development of China.

Greenpeace is an independent international campaigning organisation working for a sustainable andpeaceful future. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations fromgovernments, corporations or political parties. We rely entirely on individuals like you as well asfoundation grants to support our work. Join us and the other 2.8 million Greenpeace supportersworldwide today and become part of the force to save the planet.

2003 was a milestone of our environmental work in Mainland China. We established operations in Beijingand Guangzhou, which help us understand the local realities of domestic environmental problems andinternational links. In addition, we have begun to build up a good relationship with the Chinesegovernment, and have been working with authorities on domestic environmental law and policies.

On behalf of Greenpeace China, I would like toexpress my gratitude for your continuous support, which gives our environmental work its momentum.

2003 was an unforgettable year: Both MainlandChina and Hong Kong were heavily impacted bySARS, resulting in an increased public awarenessabout our living environment, support andrecognition of our work in environmental protectionand improving our living environment.

We take this opportunity to highlight some of ourachievements. Firstly, Greenpeace International’sExecutive Director, Dr. Gerd Leipold, was invitedto Beijing to meet with officials of the StateEnvironmental Protection Administration in order toexplain and to promote Greenpeace’s role inenvironmental work in Mainland. Dr. Leipold alsogave a speech in the Peking University. Weconducted local campaigns in both Hong Kongand the Mainland. Our achievements include:successfully convincing food distributors andproducers in Hong Kong and China, covering120 brands in Hong Kong, and 53 brands in theMainland, to commit to stop selling GE food;pressuring CLP to develop Renewable Energy, encouraging SEPA to ban E-waste imports; andsuccessful postponement of the proposedincineration of dioxin-contaminated mud from theDisney site at Tsing Yi.

To continue our efforts to improve theenvironment in the Mainland and Hong Kong isour long-term, but imminent mission. We needyour continuous support. Your participation isessential to achieving a clean and peaceful world. We sincerely thank for your continuing support!

 !"MESSAGE FROMEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

2003 was the year that Greenpeace committeditself to internal capacity building in order to makeour work in Mainland China more efficient andeffective. Greenpeace globally recognises theimportance of the organisation’s environmentaladvocacy work in the Mainland.

Over the next five years, we will substantiallyincrease our work in the Mainland, so as to raisepublic awareness on environmental issues, andinfluence environmental policy and law making inthe Mainland and Hong Kong. Our environmentalcampaigns will concentrate on long-term andinfluential tasks, including campaigns against GEfood and for sustainable agriculture, the promotionof renewable energy, the elimination of toxicpollution and the protection of ancient forests. We aim to make “Greenpeace” an influential andeffective environmental voice in the Mainland.Greenpeace will work on official registration in theMainland; gain public support and prepareplatform for fundraising work, and exploreopportunity to extend network to Taiwan andoverseas Chinese communities.

Despite the impact of SARS, with the tremendoussupport of individual supporters, our fundraisingincome increased by 10%. In addition wereduced our fundraising expenditure in order tooptimise fundraising income spent onenvironmental campaigns.

Thank you for your support of Greenpeace. We hope with your continuous support, we cantogether create a better and sustainable globalvillage! Why not invite your friends and families tojoin us?

Greenpeace used peacefulmeans in an attempt to stop thewar in Iraq:■ Projected the Peace sign on

the USS Blue Ridgecommand ship in Hong Kongharbour, conveying anti-warmessages of Chinese peopleto the US seventh fleet in thewestern Pacific.

■ Held a series of anti-warcommunity activities: “GreenSquare Movement” providinga focus for Hong Kongindividuals, and conveying themessage in different forms.

■ Protest actions: “Die-in”outside US Consulate tosymbolise the senseless lossof civilian lives in Iraq.

The war still continues.Greenpeace believes thatnuclear non-proliferation anddisarmament should beachieved through theestablishment of a global legallybinding framework, instead ofunilateral warship diplomacy.
