Message: April 4, 2021 “Eighth Day” (Begins)

(Easter) Since we aren’t able to meet today—.

Never forget: During these days of change and uncertainty, we still have a One sure Hope, and Constancy. Namely, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

Suggestion: As you read Scripture look for the presence of the Trinity and make a mark, perhaps a triangle. ∆

➠ * REMEMBER: [It is helpful to read the highlighted passages to get insight.]

INTRODUCTION:

Today is, “Easter Sunday,” the “Resurrection” day!. As we continue the series called “The Eighth Day,” We have come to the real beginning of

the “Eighth Day,” continuing the theme I am using as an analogy. Remember, in Genesis, the Seven Days of Creation? The seventh day was the “Sabbath.” This was to be a day of rest. I’m going to suggest that God actually has an “Eighth Day” of Creation. Remember, I am using it as a metaphor to describe God’s work during the time of Christ, and beyond. Remember, again, what Jesus said, John 5:16-13 (NIV)

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.

17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”

He also said:

Luke 5:5 (NIV) 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

As I said last week, Jesus and His Father worked together to establish an “Eighth Day” of Creation. This “Eighth Day,” I’m going to call it the “Kingdom Day,” or “Kingdom Age,” since it continues forever. When Jesus lived, died, and rose from the gave, He established a new era. This is the LORD’s Day, the “Kingdom Age” in which we now live and will be completed when Jesus returns setting up the Millennium and then the New Heaven and Earth!

Today, we celebrate the greatest event in all of human history; the “Resurrection” of Jesus Christ. We remember this historic time which established the internal kingdom that allows us to live in this “Eighth Day” of Creation!

[Aside: perhaps Sunday, the first day of the week after the Sabbath, could fit into this analogy by imagining it as a celebration of the resurrection of JESUS! The church celebrates on this day because the early church (see: Acts) began worshipping on this day, calling it the “Lord’s Day.”]

Page of 1 14

His Kingdom Age began on this Sunday and continues as an invisible kingdom which lives in the hearts of people who have been transformed by the Gospel.

In reflecting on Easter week we must remember “Good Friday,” the day after “Maundy Thursday” (which celebrates the “Last Supper”). It is called “Good” because Christ’s death redeemed people giving them the ability for a “new birth” into the hope of eternal life. The events certainly were tragic, but the results are glorious!

Reflect on the seven last words of Jesus on the cross:

1. “FATHER, Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”— (Luke 23:32-34*)

2. “TODAY, You will be with Me in Paradise.” — (Luke 23:35-43 *)

3. “DEAR WOMAN, Behold your son.” — (John 19:16-27 *)

4. “Why have you forsaken Me?” — (Mark 15:25-35*)

5. “I Thirst” — (John 19:28-29*)

6. “FATHER, Into your hands I commit my spirit” — (Luke 23:44-46 *)

7. “IT IS FINISHED!” — (John 19:30 *)

Thinking on these last words of Christ gives us a sense of what the Cross means for all of the Redeemed.

Luke 23:44-49* gives us some interesting details: Centurion amazed, the sun darkened for three hours, and the Temple curtain was torn from top to bottom.

Matthew 27:51-56* also contains interesting elements in addition to the sun darkened and curtain torn. He says there was an earthquake and tombs were opened.

Perhaps it could also remind us of the events leading up to Calvary. Remember when Simon of Cyrene was conscripted to carry the cross.…

Mark 15:21(NIV) 21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on

his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Remember what Jesus said to His Disciples and us, about the necessity of carrying the cross of allegiance to Him.…

Mark 8:34-38 (NIV) 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my

disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for

the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

Page of 2 14

38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

That’s a severe warning to us! We must give Jesus 100% allegiance to Him, if we are to meet Him in Eternity!

These Hymns say it well… Calvary Covers It All

Verse 1 Far dearer than all

That the world can impart Was the message that came to my heart

How that Jesus alone For my sin did atone

And Calvary covers it all

Chorus Calvary covers it all

My past with its sin and stain My guilt and despair

Jesus took on Him there And Calvary covers it all

Verse 2 The stripes that He bore

And the thorns that He wore Told His mercy and love evermore

And my heart bowed in shame As I called on His name

And Calvary covers it all

Verse 3 How matchless the grace

When I looked on the face Of this Jesus my crucified Lord

My redemption complete I then found at His feet

And Calvary covers it all

Verse 4 How blessed the tho't

That my soul by Him bo't Shall be His in the glory on high Where with gladness and song

I'll be one of the throng And Calvary covers it all

At The Cross Verse 1

Alas and did my Savior bleed And did my Sov'reign die

Would He devote that sacred head For sinners such as I

Verse 2 Was it for crimes that I had done

He groaned upon the tree Amazing pity grace unknown

And love beyond degree

Verse 3 Well might the sun in darkness hide

And shut his glories in When Christ the mighty Maker died

For man the creature's sin

Verse 4 But drops of grief can ne'er repay

The debt of love I owe Here Lord I give myself away

It's all that I can do

Chorus At the cross at the cross where

I first saw the light And the burden of my heart rolled away It was there by faith I received my sight

And now I am happy all the day

Chorus 2 At the cross at the cross I lay my burdens down

At the cross you paid the cost For the freedom I have found

At the cross at the cross I lay my burdens down

Now as we look at that great morning, Sunday almost 2000 years ago, we see the ushering in of the whole new age for mankind, the “Kingdom Age.”

Eighth Day Begins (Easter Sunday)

Now we will look at the account from three eyewitnesses to the Resurrection Day: Luke, Matthew and John. (Mark’s brief account gives a similar version of what the other Gospels say. Mark 16:9-20 is not found in the earliest or better manuscripts. It does contain several items that may have been added later, and are questionable, to some degree.) Each Gospel has a unique account of that day. One of the strong proofs to the authenticity of the resurrection is that each of the Gospels say the similar account about that day, but give different details. In the courts of law in eyewitness accounts, if each witness says it exactly the same, it gives evidence that the answers are rehearsed. Variations show that each one had their own observations. [If you want to do serious study about the proof of Christ and Christianity, the be most thorough book is “Evidence That Demands a Verdict” by Josh and Sean McDowell. (c.2017). Lee Strobel’s books are also very helpful, and easier reading, “The Case for Christ” etc. HAPPY READING, (this should only take a month or so?).]

I. Resurrection Day

A. Early in the Morning Luke 24:1-3 (NIV)

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the

Lord Jesus.

Reflections & Thoughts: Luke tells us that this is happening on the first day of the

week, after the Sabbath. Since the Jewish custom was to anoint the body for burial with spices. Since the crucifixion was on Friday, and Sabbath began at Sundown, they were unable to complete the task until after the Sabbath. (cf. John 19:38-32,* Mark 15:42-46*).

The amazing discovery was that the stone had been rolled away, and here was no body! The evidence is building. The grave stone rolled in a trench into a dip so that it could only be rolled away with strong force of several men.

B. He Is Not Here Luke 24:4-8 (NIV)

4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.

5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:

7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”

8 Then they remembered his words.

Reflections & Thoughts: They apparently began to wonder what had happened and as they waited suddenly two men

appeared. The appearance was so brilliant that the ladies bowed to ground, afraid. These men were obviously angels, and they reminded the women that Jesus had told them He was going to be crucified and raised to life on the third day. [Note: Jewish reckoning is that any part of a day is counted as a day.]

After the two men reminded them of Jesus’ words to them in Galilee, they remembered Jesus’ words.

C. Nonesense Luke 24:9-11 (NIV)

9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.

10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.

11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

Reflections & Thoughts: When the women reported to the eleven disciples and the other followers, they were not

believed. The message was not something they had experienced and they felt it was not logical. Remember, they were all in the state of grief over Jesus’ death and it was a difficult time to understand.

Matthew 27:55-56* gives a fuller list of the women who were witness of the Crucifixion.

Page of 5 14

D. Peter Wonders Luke 24:12 (NIV)

12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Reflections & Thoughts: Luke tells us that Peter ran to the tomb. Looking inside he saw no body, only the burial

linens [More details will be given in the other Gospels.]

II. AFTER THE SABBATH

A. Earthquake Matthew 28:1-3 (NIV)

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

Reflections & Thoughts: Matthew points out that during a “violent earthquake” an angel rolled the stone away and sat

upon it.

B. Do Not Be Afraid Matthew 28:4-7 (NIV)

4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus,

who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you

into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

Page of 6 14

Reflections & Thoughts: Here are some interesting facts that are not contained elsewhere. The guards were so afraid

that they were paralyzed. This angel told the women “do not be afraid,” but look in the empty tomb. [Aside: I wonder if he guards were lying on he ground when they came?]

The women were instructed to tell the Disciples to meet Jesus in Galilee. [Interesting note: in Mark 16:7* the angel told the women to tell the Disciples “and Peter” to meet Jesus in Galilee.]

C. Greetings Matthew 28:8-10 (NIV)

8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.

10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Reflections & Thoughts: Notice the women were afraid, but also “filled with joy.” Jesus met them and they ran to

Him (John points out Mary Magdalene only.) He repeated the message to meet Him in Galilee.

D. Bribes Matthew 28:11-15 (NIV)

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,

13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’

14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been

widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

Reflections & Thoughts: This passage tell about the plot to discredit the Resurrection. The evil one was also at the

scene and began to allow the chief priests to construct a lie, that the disciples stole Jesus’ body. This story was especially for the Jews. [Note: this story is readily available and used today as atheists and unbelievers seek to deny the Resurrection.]

Matthew points out some interesting facts about the lie. The fact that they gave the guards a large amount of money, indicates that it was a bribe. They also planned to defend them against Rome. History tells us that Roman soldiers who lost a prisoner were to be executed. What a dastardly plot by the very people who should have honored Jesus as the Messiah. Isn’t is sad today, that Jewish leaders today, still deny their own Scriptures that point out clearly, Jesus is the Messiah. (cf. Isaiah 53*).

E. To Galilee Matthew 28:16-17 (NIV)

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

Reflections & Thoughts: The Disciples met Jesus in Galilee and worshiped. The sad part is that some still doubted

(Probably among the other followers). Perhaps they were people who only wanted to see miracles being performed, not the sacrifices that might result if they continued to follow Him? Remember Jesus’ confrontation to the crowd that followed Him after the feeding of the5000? (cf. John 6:26-27*).

Page of 7 14

F. Make Disciples Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Reflections & Thoughts: This is the last words of Jesus in Matthew and have been called the “Great Commission.”

This is the greatest instruction to Believers to do missionary work around the world. The foundation of this command is that the church is to “make disciples.” The other parts of the command tells us the process will involve, baptism in the name of the Trinity! The church is also to disciple them to obey Christ’s words. But the significant completion of this command, is for all Believers to remember that Christ promises to be with Believers “to the end of the age!”

Remember in Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer” (John 17*) He asks the Father to dwell with Believers. When Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit (John 14*) He promised that He would dwell in them, along with the whole Trinity!

Low In The Grave He Lay (Christ Arose) Verse 1

Low in the grave He lay Jesus my Saviour Waiting the coming day Jesus my Lord

Chorus Up from the grave He arose

With a mighty triumph o'er His foes He arose a victor from the dark domain

And He lives forever with His saints to reign He arose He arose

Hallelujah Christ arose

Verse 2 Vainly they watch His bed Jesus my Saviour

Vainly they seal the dead Jesus my Lord

Verse 3 Death cannot keep his prey Jesus my Saviour

He tore the bars away Jesus my Lord

Now let’s look at John’s narrative. John give a very rich and expanded description of this day and beyond. (We will continue with John’s narrative next week.)

III. AT THE TOMB

A. Stone Removed John 20:1-2 (NIV)

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Page of 8 14

*Reflections & Thoughts: John begins with a personal account of Mary Magdalene. Apparently she ran back to the

Disciples and without knowing, yet, what had happened, she ran to Peter and John (the other disciple). Her anxiety caused her to fear that someone had stolen Jesus’ body.

B. Peter and John John 20:3-10 (NIV)

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips

of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its

place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and

believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Reflections & Thoughts: Having heard what Mary reported, they both investigated. Whereas, Luke had only talked

about Peter, John fills in the story about himself. John, being younger, outran Peter, but his timidity only allowed him to look inside. Peter with his boldness, entered the tomb first, then later John went inside.

Their belief was that Jesus was not there. They still did not understand about the Resurrection, even though Jesus had told them many times. Having returned to the others, they were still mystified.

C. Mary Magdalene John 20:11-15 (NIV)

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the

other at the foot. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said,

“and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was

Jesus. 15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”Thinking he was

the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Reflections & Thoughts: John now gives a clearer picture of the women at the Tomb. Remember there were other

women there (Matthew 28:8-10), but John singles out Mary. [There is no indication about the other women, so it could be that the events were close but isolated. Matthew may have condensed these events.]

Again it talks about two angels, describing them in the tomb. They talked to Mary and asked why she was crying? Again she expressed her fear that someone had removed His body.

John’s personal narrative now shows his compassionate heart. In giving the detail that Mary thought the man standing there was the gardener. She asks were they have taken Jesus? She probably thought she could still give Him the burial spices. Remember that Jesus also disguised Himself to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:15-17*).

D. I Have Seen The Lord! John 20:16-18 (NIV)

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”

Page of 9 14

18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Reflections & Thoughts: This passage is one of the most beautiful description of

Jesus personal relationship with Believers. When Mary recognized Jesus voice when He said her

name, she fell at His feet to worship. [See: Matthew 28:9* where all the women worshipped.]

He indicate that Mary should not restrain Him, because He needed to see His Father first! The words He spoke has ramifications for all of us who are Believers. She was to convey to the others… “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”

This is Jesus’ indication that God is our God and Father! the very same relationship He has!

That’s what Easter is all about!

When Mary reported to the Disciples: “I have seen the Lord!” it was with great joy looking forward to Jesus’ next appearances.

I've Just Seen Jesus Verse 1

We knew He was dead It is finished He said

We had watched as His life ebbed away Then we all stood around

'Til the guards took Him down Joseph begged for His body that day

It was late afternoon When we got to the tomb

Wrapped His body And sealed up the grave So I know how you feel His death was so real

But please listen and hear what I say Chorus 1

I've just seen Jesus I tell you He's alive I've just seen Jesus

My precious Lord alive And I knew He really saw me too

As if till now I'd never lived All that I'd done before Won't matter anymore

I've just seen Jesus I've just seen Jesus

And I'll never be the same again No I'll never be the same again

Verse 2 It was just before dawn

I was running along Barely able to see where to go

For the tears in my eyes And the dusky sunrise

Seemed to cloud up my vision so It was His voice I first heard

Those kind gentle words Asking what was my reason for tears

And I sobbed in despair My Lord is not there

He said child it is I I am here

Page of 10 14

Chorus 2 I've just seen Jesus I tell you He's alive I've just seen Jesus

My precious Lord alive And I knew He really saw me too

As if till now I’d never lived All that I’d done before Won't matter anymore

I've just seen Jesus I've just seen Jesus I've just seen Jesus

And all that I've done before Won't matter anymore

I've just seen Jesus And I'll never be the same again

E. Peace Be With You! John 20:19-23 (NIV)

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Reflections & Thoughts: On that first day, Jesus now appears to the Disciples, They were gathered together in a room

with the doors locked. They had just witnessed the Jewish leaders killing Jesus, now they feared these powerful Jews were hunting the rest of them.

When Jesus just appeared, not opening the door, it showed what His resurrected body was like. [Paul talks about that in 1 Corinthians 15.]

The greeting, perhaps, reminded them of what Jesus said in John 14…

John 14:27 (NIV) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not

let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

When Jesus told them, He was giving them the same commssion as Matthew 28. Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

Then Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on them. This was a taste and forerunner of what would happen on the “Day of Pentecost.” (Acts 2)

The statement about forgiveness, I believe, is basically saying that it is a reflection that when a person is “born again” they are forgiven and the Disciples have confirmed that promise in the person’s life. This is acknowledgement of the message of forgiveness because of belief in

Page of 11 14

Jesus. [People have falsely used this verse to usurp Jesus power (only Jesus can forgive), and have harmed the church.]

Next week we will continue with the appearances of Jesus, Lord willing, and the great Resurrection miracle!

These are familiar and fitting Conclusions. He Lives

Verse 1 I serve a risen Savior

He's in the world today I know that He is living Whatever men may say I see His hand of mercy I hear His voice of cheer

And just the time I need Him He's always near

Chorus He lives He lives

Christ Jesus lives today He walks with me and talks with me

Along life's narrow way He lives He lives

Salvation to impart You ask me how I know He lives

He lives within my heart

Verse 2 In all the world around me

I see His loving care And though my heart grows weary

I never will despair I know that He is leading

Through all the stormy blast The day of His appearing

Will come at last

Verse 3 Rejoice rejoice O Christian Lift up your voice and sing

Eternal hallelujahs To Jesus Christ the King

Because He Lives Verse 1

God sent His Son they called Him Jesus He came to love heal and forgive

He bled and died to buy my pardon An empty grave is there to prove

My Savior lives

Chorus Because He lives I can face tomorrow

Because He lives all fear is gone Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living Just because He lives

Verse 2 How sweet to hold our newborn baby

And feel the pride and joy he gives But greater still the calm assurance This child can face uncertain days

Because Christ lives

Verse 3 And then one day I'll cross that river

I'll fight life's final war with pain And then as death gives way to vict'ry

I'll see the lights of glory And I'll know He reigns

Next week we will continue with the appearances of Jesus, Lord willing, and the great Resurrection miracle!

Remember: Jesus is God’s Love Story!

Benediction:

This Blessing given by God for Aaron to bless Israel is the same thing that God would say for us today!

Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV) ‘ “The LORD bless you and keep you;

the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ’

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NIV) 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. ∆Remember, again… “The LORD is good, and His love endures forever.”

ALSO, REMEMBER…

Romans 8:34b (NIV) …Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Remember… you are loved!
