Director’s Message

Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Mesa residents and playing a significant role in shaping the character of the City through preeminent parks and recreation. The Department manages 2,200+ acres of park land including 205 parks with unique playgrounds, first-class athletic fields, nine aquatic centers, splash pads, trails, five recreation centers, a championship golf course, convention center, amphitheater, cemetery and two spring training baseball stadiums.

By creating a sense of place, parks and recreation services in Mesa provide critical connections for residents through the natural environment, recreational pursuits, historic appreciation, and social and cultural events. This sense of place shapes the cohesive fabric of vision, values and identity of the community while promoting an active lifestyle for all ages. Mesa meets park and recreation needs of today’s residents without sacrificing future generations by balancing environmental, economic, and equity concerns. The department enriches the lives of individuals, families, intergenerational groups and the entire community through positive and fulfilling recreational experiences. Mesa proactively engages in continuous improvement as offerings become outdated or under-utilized, while collaborating with other service providers to achieve balanced availability of programs and facilities.

The Mesa Parks system is a premier destination that welcomes and captivates residents and visitors. The park system and its beauty are part of the daily life and shape the character of the City. Residents are informed and involved in shaping the future of the park and recreation system and its value to their lives.

Our parks are critically important in preserving natural resources that have quantifiable economic benefits to our community, in addition to intrinsic environmental, aesthetic, and recreation benefits. We are a voice in our community for protecting open space, connecting children to nature, and providing education and programming that helps communities engage in conservation practices. Mesa is leading the way in developing new “low water use” parks that beautify our desert community by embracing native flora and trees.

Our parks and recreation staff are leaders in improving and enhancing health and wellness by offering fitness, sports, and healthy lifestyle classes for people of all ages and abilities. We are actively engaged in providing opportunities for citizens in reducing obesity, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition, while strengthening skills that enrich our mind, body and overall attitude. Mesa has miles of bike routes and jogging paths through park land and canal paths as a commitment to outdoor activity.

Our department embraces universal access and inclusion to park and recreation services and facilities. We strive to ensure citizens equal access and opportunities that transcend barriers of income through a low fee structure, fee assistance and scholarship opportunities. New facilities and playground upgrades are made with inclusive designs that allow users, regardless of ability, the opportunity to recreate together. In addition to bilingual customer service staff, the departments print materials are available translated into multiple languages.

Serving the Community

Our department is proud to focus our efforts to serve the community within the National Recreation and Parks Association’s Three Pillars of Impact.
