Merry Christmas

CLERGY LETTERAdvent – awaiting a momentous arrivalAccording to the dictionary the word ‘advent’ means “Arrival that has been awaited (especially of something momentous)”. I wonder what momentous events you have waited to happen over the years? Perhaps the birth of a child or grandchild? Waiting for a wedding day or exam results, or to move house? Or perhaps waiting for test results or, sadly, watching as someone close to you is dying? All of these things, and many others I’m sure you can think of, are momentous as they change our lives; things can never go back to how they were before. Thinking about this has made me reflect on whether we always know just how momentous some events will be for us, and whether we can really comprehend what it is we have been waiting for?

As you read this we should be into what the church calls the ‘Season of Advent’. This includes the four Sundays preceding Christmas Day, and this year is the shortest Advent can be as the 4th Sunday in Advent falls on Christmas Eve. In the season of Advent we watch and wait as the Church prepares for the momentous arrival of Jesus into the world which we celebrate on Christmas Day.

But was Jesus’ arrival, which had been long anticipated and long awaited by God’s people, recognised as being momentous when it came? Or is it only as we look back we can see just how momentous it was? For Mary and Joseph it was probably as worrisome as any birth can be, with the added complication of not being booked in to the local delivery suite! For the shepherds it was perhaps perplexing, and for the wise men it would mean a long and exhausting journey. Perhaps only the angels truly understood how momentous that moment was as they sang “Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth” - recognising the arrival of that momentous day when God himself came to earth as the Prince of Peace, changing forever the history of God’s people.

We warmly invite you to join us as we celebrate this momentous season - please see the list of services which are happening across our Benefice: Carol services, Nativities, Christingles and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. You will be very welcome to join us as we celebrate together the advent of Jesus coming into the world to dwell among us.

SK ALERT SYSTEM

The police have advised us to set up a group for quick transfer of information about break-ins / burglaries etc across the village which is linked to the police. This is in the form of a WhatsApp group that will enable alerts to be very quickly relayed about any suspicious activity involving property or individuals. Its main function is to quickly notify all group members of such activity. As the police will be part of this they also will be notified immediately.

Rules for the Alert System

• There will be two administrators who will control who joins the group i.e. Gary Aram and Jill Harvey.• Your details will not be passed on to anyone outside the WhatsApp group – but you need to be aware that your details (mobile phone number and name) on WhatsApp will be available to the group.• The Group will be restricted to villagers and PC Andy Cooper. We will link in with the North Kilworth group via one of their administrators who will be on the group.• People need to familiarise themselves with the security and privacy settings of WhatsApp.• We cannot guarantee an outsider will not get access to the group. Please therefore do not put any sensitive / personal details on the site or information that may help a thief i.e. “Please keep an eye on my house whilst I am away for two weeks….”• The group is not to be used for anything other than conveying security alert information. If you need to contact someone directly please do it separately. The administrators will monitor activity on the site.

To Join

• You need have or install WhatsApp on your smartphone.• To join the WhatsApp group alert system you need to send a WhatsApp to: Gary Aram 07799 894207 Jill Harvey 07834 278152• Firstly add Gary or Jill’s number (above) into your contacts on your phone. Then please send your contact information on a vCard** (see below) via WhatsApp to Gary or Jill.• If this is difficult you can also send Gary or Jill a WhatsApp message with your full name and address.

**A virtual card / vCard is an electronic business card that can be created on your mobile phone by going into your contact list and then “sharing” this contact. To do this:

• Add your own contact information into your contacts on your phone - make sure that you include your address so that your village address can be verified.• Choose “Share contact” option for your address and• Share this contact via WhatsApp to Gary or Jill, it will create a vCard for you.

Please note that whatever personal information is on your vCard this will all be conveyed to Jill or Gary and shared with the group.

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS

Well things have certainly slowed down over the past few weeks. The number of wintering wildfowl is now increasing with the first 11 goosander moving in. In addition, there has been 2 red-crested pochard which have been present for around a week.

There have been very good numbers of winter thrushes (redwing and fieldfare) moving through and feeding along the hedgerows. These are worth keeping an eye out for, as they will feed in local gardens around the village, especially on fallen apples.

Gail and Rob would like to invite you and your friends to The Pink Peony during our extended Christmas shopping hours,

open every day from 6th December until 3pm on Christmas Eve.

Bring along your Christmas shopping lists and enjoy a relaxed and

friendly atmosphere whilst selecting your Christmas goodies!

The Pink Peony is where you will find a warm and festive welcome, affordable prices, unique and quality gifts, along with the very best old fashioned customer service.

. We will have a selection of

*Special offers *Fabulous Christmas gift ideas, including jewellery, scarves, winter fashion hats, candles and natural body products and lots more *Christmas Decorations *Hand-made Cards and Crafts *Hampers

One of the best birds of the month came in the form of a little gull, which I found on the 31st October. I then saw the bird a couple of days later. This was my 150th species at the reservoir in 2017. The overall total for the reservoir stands at 157 (the previous best year was 151 species). It would be a great achievement to reach 160.

One of the best birds “seen in the hand” was a fine green woodpecker (see photograph). They certainly look a lot meaner when you see them up close. The other bird in the collage is a redpoll, which was caught on the same day.
