Kinder Morganemergency exercise
Kinder Morgan Canada will conductan emergency exercise tomorrow 7:30am-2:30pm on the Nicola River in Lions Me-morial Park and N’Kwala Park.
Today & tomorrow, there will be tem-porary closures to some areas of the parkto move and utilize equipment & vehi-cles for the exercise. Recreational usersare asked to check signs in the park formore info on access points.
The full-scale deployment exercisewill simulate product release and re-sponse on the Nicola River. A 100-foot to500-foot oil containment boom will bedeployed on the river, though no oil orsimulated product will be released dur-ing the exercise.

The Coquihalla’s30th anniversary
Phase 1 of the Coquihalla highway of-ficially opened 30 years ago — May 16,1986. The Coquihalla/Hwy 5 was com-pleted in 3 phases. The first phase of con-struction, which officially opened onMay 16, 1986, was the longest stretch at120km. The 2nd & 3rd phases, linkingMerritt to Kamloops and to Peachland re-spectively, significantly reduced overalltravel time, opening up a connection be-tween major coastal communities and theinterior of BC. It also provided a faster,safer alternative to the Trans-CanadaFraser Canyon route. Choosing the Route
Design of the Coq began with explo-ration of the proposed route in 1973, fol-lowed by an official survey in 1979 whenthe first construction contract was let.
Accelerated design and constructionbegan in the spring of 1984 in prepara-tion for Expo 86 in Vancouver. To be surethe project was completed on time, morethan 10,000 people were needed to fill allof the jobs. More than 1,000 pieces ofheavy equipment worked non-stop everyday during the summer of 1985 to get itdone!Connecting Communities, Building the Future
When the Coquihalla opened, itwasn’t just a faster route to the Interior, italso became a vital link between Merrittand the rest of the province. For yearsleading up to the opening of the Coq,Merritt had been lobbying the provinceto build a new route through the Coqui-halla Pass to Hope, which was accessibleonly by cattle trails. Today Merritt is a vi-brant and growing community, an im-portant hub between the coast and theinterior of the province. Kamloops andthe Okanagan have also experienced atremendous amount of growth andchange since the Phase 2 & 3 of the Co-quihalla were completed, evolving intothe bustling metropolitan hubs we knowthem as today.The Coq by the numbers 9 million tonnes of gravel (625,000 dump
truck loads) were hauled. 45 kms of culvert pipe were installed. 700,000 loads of dirt were hauled. 160,000 tonnes of concrete were poured. 26,000 tonnes of steel were installed. 90,000 metres of fencing were installed. 150,000 metres of median and guard rail
