anticipation, a stream-lining of the process is in the works —
areqest from concil to simplify a long &complex exercise.
Concillor LindaBrown broght p a qery abot the ‘a-tomatic’ annal 2%
tax increase that was
bilt into the previos concil’s 5-year bdget plan. She
also mentioned thatwe’ve had “hge srplses over the lastcople
years”, and wonders why we’d
raise the tax rate when that is the case.If yo’re not paying
attention to
things, it’s easy to miss picking p on or“hge srplses”. Bt later
in the meet-ing, the planning manager’s report states:the Bilding,
Safety and Inspection Serv-ices Dept is working on many major
proj-ects inclding the NVIT Tradesexpansion, Merritt Green Energy,
BenchSchool addition, an indstrial warehose,two hotels, and the LNG
felling station.
It also says that active bsiness li-censes nmber 603 (p from 544
in 2014).And year-to-date (one has to assme hemeans the end of
2015) total vale of
bilding permits was $26.974 million (pfrom $7.598 million
in 2014).
Perhaps this will be the year that citizenstake an interest in

Merritt Herald andthe Merritt News have been added to
the“Newshond” newspaper digitizationproject. This has been done in
partner-ship with the NV Msem and Archives.
There will be a special lanch on Feb-rary 11, 4pm at the Merritt
Library, tocelebrate a major milestone in the effortsto preserve
local history of the NicolaValley. Refreshments will be
available.

CEO E!!o! A company, feeling it was time for a shakeup,
hired a new CEO. The new boss was de-termined to rid the company of
all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy
leaningagainst a wall and idly picking his teeth. The room was full
of workers and he wanted to let themknow that he meant business. He
asked the guy, "How much money do you make a week?" A
littlesurprised, the young man looked at him and said, "I make a
little over $400 dollars a week, why?The CEO said,"Wait right
