B o o k R e v i e w - T h e M e r m a i d o f D o o m B a r Merriott resident Keith Maxwell has just had his first children’s book published, illus-trated by Joanna Black and Lydia Carter. Here is a review written by by Elizabeth Dale - Cornish Bird.

“Stories are part of our Cornish bedrock. They once helped us make sense of the world around us, to explain the un-fathomable, the mysterious or the fright-ening. Whether it was using giants to

account for our fantastic geology, or those naughty piskies to explain why we got lost on the way home from the pub. And it is the same today. Stories enter-tain, they enlighten, but very often they help us to understand and to heal.

In The Mermaid of Doom Bar, Keith Maxwell weaves the whispers of an ancient legend into a modern allegory. This is a haunting tale of loss and bereavement, but also an affirmation of the importance of allowing the magical and the unexplained into your world.

Beautifully illustrated throughout ,this is a small book that tackles some big themes with sensitivity. It could be a useful tool when approaching the

subjects of death and grief with a child, but it also stands alone as an entertain-ing and thought-provoking story.

Keith’s love of and connection to Cornwall is clear and heart-warming. The scene he creates is both recognisable and timeless. The Mermaid of Doom Bar is a lovely traditional fable told with a charming, contemporary voice.

The Mermaid of Doom Bar is available to order on Amazon and will be popping up in your local bookshops very soon I am sure.” www.magicalfiction.wordpress.com

The brown of the title would refer to poor, uncultivated land.

This one means an “eye” or islet covered with “buns” or reeds.

in Hinton Village Hall at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 in advance from the Village Shop and Dorothy’s Tea Room, or £5.50 on the door. Doors open 7.00 pm. To reserve tickets please contact Bob Kefford on 01460 72563.

Decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives. Emily Blunt takes over seamlessly from Julie Andrews to much acclaim.

“Mary Poppins Returns really is practically perfect in every way. Walt Disney Pictures clearly realise the legacy of their beloved 1964 musical adaptation of PL Travers’ Mary Poppins stories is not to be trifled with.”. The Telegraph Review and Mark Kermode in The Guardian exclaimed: “not totally expialidocious but still a joy.”

On a lovely Saturday afternoon, the 16 Bells’ Choir held its fourth Summer Concert. Led by our fantastic Musical Director Rachel and accompanied by John on the organ and piano, the Choir performed a selection of music, sacred and secular, including a beautiful rendition of the Nunc Dimittis with our soloist Shelia and with Nick on the Trumpet. We all enjoyed a fun “Afternoon at the Seaside” singing a very successful round of Bottle of Pop, Fish and Chips and Vinegar and I want a Chocolate ice cream. The Concert rounded off with an enthusiastic version of Halleluiah Get Happy.

The Choir is a friendly, non-auditioned group of people who love to get together to sing! We are always open to new members and we will be returning to rehearsals on Wednesday 4th September at 7pm in Merriott Church. And as always, the Concert finished with tea and CAKE! Nicola Cammack

Rev Bob Hicks thanks the choir for the concert.

Last month the Open Group had a very informative talk about Fire Safety in the home. A member of the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service explained about the

fire hazards in our homes.

Most fires start in the kitchen and are caused by people becoming distracted when cooking. The slogan is "LOOK WHEN YOU COOK" and always watch your cooking.

You are more at risk of fire when you are asleep, so things to do at bedtime:

• Close all inside doors to stop a fire from spreading

• Unplug electrical appliances, particularly phones and iPads that can overheat

• Check the cooker is turned off

• Don't leave the washing machine on

• Put candles and cigarettes out properly

• Plan an escape route and make sure it is clear. Have a door key handy.

Smoke alarms are the best way to protect yourself and your home and should be tested every month.

You can have a Home Safety Check completely free of charge and have free smoke alarms fitted by calling 0800 05 02 999.

A technician will call and advise you on keeping safe from fire. After listening to the talk several of our members booked a visit. It will be an hour well spent and could save lives.

Now all the excitement of the Marquetry Society's Annual Exhibition/Competition is over, I am pleased to say that one of our members, Ron Webster, was given a Highly Commended Award for one of his entries.

The next two shows are the Melplash Show and then the two-day Yandles of Martock Show at the beginning of September - not too far for some of you to travel to and you will be able to see a good display of our efforts.

We are still looking for new members and as usual you can always come and see us on Thursday afternoons at Mike's house, behind Osborne's old shop in the Broad-way. There will also be a Somerset Marquetry Group sign on the house wall, do come and see us, even if it's out of curiosity. It's a hobby for all - male, female, old (like us!!), young and also suitable for disabled persons. There is no subscription or entry fee required (only 50p for tea and biscuits!) and new members will be given expert tuition and help on how to go about it. One way of finding out more about this ancient and fascinating hobby is to go to the website marquetry.org.

The monthly Indoor Market at the Merriott Social Venue's next outing is on the Saturday 14 September, so unfortunately if you wish to see me then don't forget to see us on a Thursday afternoon.

Looking forward to seeing you.

We are really excited to announce that we have just received planning consent from South Somerset District Council.

Over the next few weeks we will be preparing the site to formally open our doors in Septem-ber and we would love our local community to become involved.

ARK at Egwood CIC is a not for profit organisation, set up as a therapeutic land-based day provision for adults and young people, where new skills can be learnt such as animal husbandry, horticulture (flower and vegetable production), hedge-laying, dry stone walling, arts activities etc. When we get our first produce, we will start to prepare and serve community lunches in our local village halls and we hope to evolve to become an integral and valued part of our community.

We will also offer therapeutic services including counselling and nature and equine facili-tated therapy and, as we get established, hope to expand this area further. Hence ARK will be a safe space to over-come anxiety, stress and generally improve the health and well-being of both those using our service and those volunteering with us.

Over the next few weeks, we shall need to re-furbish our bus and boat, build a log

cabin, set up our polytunnel, estab-lish a wildlife pond, install a track and parking and start to set up the growing areas. We are therefore looking for volunteers with a range of different skills, from administration and marketing to woodwork and growing skills …. but enthusiasm is just as important to us!

If you think you would like to help (either for the set-up phase, or on an ongoing basis), we are holding a

Volunteer’s Evening Thursday 15th August 6pm-8pm

If you would just like to come and have a look around, we shall be also holding an

Open Day Saturday 7th September 11am until 3pm

The Merriott Table Tennis Club would like to thank everyone who came along to support our Prize Bingo night in June. We raised just over £300 on the night, so we are now hunting for a good quality second-hand table. The club would also like to thank the many

businesses in Crewkerne and Merriott that donated prizes.

Our training sessions, run for both juniors and seniors by our coach Marc Walmsley, continue to be well supported. The junior session is now being held on Sundays at 6pm which avoids clashing with the scouts.

We have entered two teams into the Yeovil league so we will be playing matches at the club nearly every Thursday night from September to March or April, depending on whether we do well in the cups. You are very welcome to come along and support your local team and to join us to play on Sundays at 7pm, or for juniors from 6pm, at the Merriott Social Venue.

Too Much Stuff…..?

Travelling around Europe in a campervan for a few weeks recently, forced us to think about how much stuff we need in our lives. Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room functions are all rolled into one relatively small space on a campervan. Although ‘campers’ are often very well designed with all kinds of storage, some of which took a few weeks for us to discover, you simply can’t take everything with you! Inevita-bly you have to make do with far fewer things than at home.

Far from being a hardship, this was actually very refreshing – that is once we’d remembered which cupboard we had actually put things in! Having fewer material objects to look after meant we didn’t worry so much. Everything was either functional or beautiful - we did take quite a lot of books to read. I suppose you could say that we were less attached to things.

This allowed time and mental space to properly engage with things that really matter; like peo-ple and the natural world. I really hope that we can hang onto to some of this now we’re back! Rev Bob Hicks 76406
