A special statement giving the con-dition and plans of the Grigsby-GrunowCo., this city, has been issued by B. J.Grigsby, president of the company.Sales figures for the first two monthsof the current year as compared withthe corresponding period a year ago,and for the nine months ended Feb-ruary 28 1930, as against those for thenine months ended February 28, 1929,arc included in the statement, as arethe company's plans in the electric re-frigeration field and the prospects forMajestic in the future, and its positionin the field of radio. 91r. Grigsby inhis statement said:

"In 1929 the radio industry passedthrough its long anticipated climaxwhich every new industry must experi-knee before settling clown to a periodof stability and normalcy. It paralleledthe experiences of the automobilé indus-try and, earlier, that in the electricalfield.

"The final struggle for supremacylast year resulted in some over -produc-tion, too great expenditures in salesefforts and advertising, and. price con-cessions not warranted by productioncosts. The stock market crash hastenedthe result and proved a blessing in dis-guise.

TEXAS HOUSE PASSESBILL TAXING CHAINS

The House of Representatives yes-terday, by a vote of 76 to 25, passeda bill to place a tax of one per cent.on the gross receipts of chain storesoperating in this State. Agitationagainst chain stores here for sometime past crystalized itself in the billto gain revenue for the State by theimposition of a tax on chain business.

John C. Tully, Chicago, has just beenelected president and chairman of theexecutive committee of the SteiniteRadio Co., this city, and its five sub-sidiaries, the Steinite ManufacturingCo., Steinite Laboratories, and SteiniteDevelopment Co., also of this city; Avi-ation Radio Corp., Atchison, Kan., andthe Leslie F. Muter Co., Chicago.The board of directors likewise named

Arthur T. Haugh, Rochester, N. Y.,vice-president of the Steinite Manufac-turing Co., around which center themajor activities of the Steinite group.

He was also designated general mana-ger of the holding company as well asthe subsidiaries.

The election of these two well knownradio executives to head the corpora-tion places the entire management andresponsibility for its success in theirhands. Their election came with theadoption of a new plan of uniformoperation by all those financially in-terested in Steinite's future operation.

Both Mr. Tully and Mr. Haugh areamong the best known radio executivesin the industry, and have long been

RMA BOARD TO MEET

dising problems will be considered bythe board of directors of the RadioManufacturers' Association at a meet-ing Friday, at the Hotel Statler, Buf-falo. H. B. Richmond, of Cambridge,Mass., president of the RMA, will pre-side.

The RMA board meeting will followa group meeting of set manufacturersat Buffalo to consider special problemsof set makers.

At the meeting Friday plans will bemade for the Sixth Annual RMA Con-vention and Trade Show to be held atAtlantic City during the week of June2. A record -breaking trade show al-ready is assured, space reservationsnow exceeding the high water mark of30,000 square feet established last yearat the show in Chicago. Reports re-garding plans for the Atlantic Cityevents in June will be submitted to theRMA board by Chairman Jess B. Haw-ley of the show committee, and Chair-man B. G. Erskine of the conventioncommittee.

Creditors to MeetFort Wayne, Ind., Friday.

A meeting of creditors of the Conti-nental Radio Corp., this city, will beheld in the offices of Wheeler Ashcraft,referee in bankruptcy, at the UnitedStates Court here, March 24, at 11 a.m., to consider and vote upon a propo-sition by the alleged bankrupt for acomposition of its debts.

The composition now prepared, andwhich will be presented by the credi-tors, consists of the giving to thosecreditors entitled to participate, thecorporation's six-month notes for twen-ty-five per cent. of the amount of theproved and allowed claims.

Alfred Marchev, former president ofthe Temple Corp., has been appointedgeneral sales manager for NathanielBaldwin, Inc., this city, manufacturerof radio products. Mr. Marchev is apioneer in the radio industry and isknown throughout the country.

As Chief EngineerDr. Ralph E. Myers, of East Or-

ange, N. J., formerly chief engineer incharge of research and development onlamps and radio tubes for the West-inghouse Lamp Co., Bloomfield, N. J.,has been appointed vice-president andchief engineer of the National UnionRadio Corp., New York. Dr. Myerswas associated with Westinghouse fortwenty-one years, and was one of thescientists who developed the 227 tube.He also played a part in the develop-ment of the general line of oxide -coat-ed filament tubes, and has participatedin the laboratory and actual manufac-turing task of perfecting radio audi-tion since the industry's earliest days.

Dr. Myers was also elected a mem-ber of the board of directors of Na-tional Union along with William M.Parke, New York attorney, and Wil-liam T. Bacon, Chicago banker.

Five of Dr. Myers' staff of assist-ants at the Westinghouse Lamp Co.have also joined the National UnionRadio Corp. They are Dr. Ernst A.Lederer, engineer; M. N. Fredenburgh,chemist; Frederick F. Wallen, plantsuperintendent; Willaim Perkins andCharles E. Swiss.

As a step in the move to reorganizethe Kolster Radio Corp., this city, itsplant is expected to reopen next weekre-employing between 600 and 1,000men in the manufacture of sets. TheKolster company was put in receiver-ship more than two months ago.

of the plant, which wasclosed down soon after receivershipproceedings were started, was discussedyesterday at a meeting between ElleryW. Stone, former president of the com-pany; Harry G. Hendricks and HarryMeyers, the receivers, and their coun-sel. Plans were made at the meetingfor the manufacture of 15,389 sets,which fifteen distributors are pledgedto buy for $419,905, under a courtorder of Vice -Chancellor Alonzo Churchsigned February 11.

Under the terms of the order, thedistributors accepted 18,850 sets al-ready manufactured for $500,000. Workon the additional sets depends upon thesigning of a contract and the workingout of additional details.

As a result of the reorganizationplans under way, a second commonstockholders' committee has been form-ed for the deposit of Kolster stock. L.Scudder Mott is secretary of this com-mittee, which is separate from thestockholders' committee formed Febru-ary 19 of which A. Harry Moore. form-er Governor of New Jersey, is chair-man, and Samuel J. Marshall, secre-tary.

Dr. Myers and his staff will be givenevery technical and plant facility forthe production of the National Unionproducts clueing 1930.

Money Out the Window

Everyone observing the customary sacrifice -sale practicesof the radio -talking machine line must be impressed with thefact that here, at least, minds are shut and ears are deaf toingenuity in specialty selling. The only way radio knowshow to dispose of surplus goods is to sell it at the greatestpossible, not the least possible, loss. It is all very well to saythat each bargain is staged on the best terms to the seller,that "we got all we could out of the stuff," that "there wereonly umpty thousand sets anyway." But the fact is thatwhen the wreckers are called in, the seller's blood has turnedto ice water, he is licked to a frazzle and in no condition totemporize and the bargain buyer knows it.

One dumping operation which has been accomplished wasconceded by outside authorities at the time to involve so rela-tively few sets that one or two or three first-class salesmenwho knew the jobber trade-if the concern that dumped hadever had salesmen who knew its jobber trade-could havetaken the excess and turned it at very little less than listprices providing everybody concerned made some extra moneyout of the operation. Another sale of scarcely seven thousandsets, which could have been coupled in a two -for -one sale, andsold for premiums and by special canvass through dealers,would through such channels have returned cost at least, whenas a matter of fact the merchandise went for far below cost.The two -for -one scheme alone has never been tried in radiomerchandising, though there are thousands of families thatwould buy two sets for the price of one-one a higher -pricedstandard model and the second one of the over -production atcost-firstly because thousands of families want and can usetwo sets and secondly because thousands more would give theextra set away to some less prosperous relative or friend.Similarly, the post -card canvass of small wage earners, work-ing women, men and boys and so on who because of their eco-nomic condition and environment seldom read or respond tonewspaper advertising, is known to produce sales results thatare astonishing when both price and merchandise are right.A girl working in a ten -cent store is no prospect for a $200radio set but she very well can be for a $60 set, for which theseller would get only $39 if he sold a trainload.

The sad part about radio salesmanship, faced by a tempo-rary setback, is that all it knows is how to cut the price tothe bone. The enormous force of an eager and unquenchablepublic demand-as irrefutably proved in the movement ofabout 3,000,000 sets a year, fair weather or foul-is persist-ently denied and the public is made the beneficiary of ridicu-lous values, whether it waits for them or not. If the industryand trade learn a little smarter selling than a sudden surren-der rf all money that has gone before, better days will be instore for radio as a commercial undertaking.

Harmony By Hard Work

The force of time and human custom has practically de-molished the piano business, taken the words of popular songs,out of the mouths of song-pluggers and put them into themouths of mc,vie actors, well-nigh laid low the phonographas it was originally known and stopped the sale of harps in

favor of saxophones. But the harmonica goes marching on.Yet the harmonica is almost as old as any other musical in-strument and is older than most. It begs the question to saythat sale is mostly to boys and young men, because boys andyoung men do not buy bicycles, ear -muffs, watch -fobs or rollerskates in the quantities familiar when the harmonica wasyounger. Something far more fundamental is making the saleof harmonicas grow year after year.

It is likely that two elements, equally important, sustainthis industry in prosperity without respect to temporary outercauses. From them, a good deal can be learned by other busi-ness. The first is that harmonica product is right in appeal.The instrument is easy to learn, low in price and as portableas a pants' pocket. The other element is that harmonica saleseffort never stops. Not merely for 300 business days, butalmost every day in the year and often for many hours morethan usual office custom, the harmonica interests plug dili-gently away, answering questions, advising dealers on thesimplest details of store display and sales promotion, grasp-ing opportunities to get the instrument any conceivable newopportunity for recognition, shipping and billing, advertisingand selling, all the commonplace routine which seems so ele-mentary but which is really very difficult to do effectivelybecause the power behind it must never flag.

A harmonica business offers a mighty object lesson tothe man who is used to crowding on all steam one month andputting out the fires in the boiler the next. In no other waycould profit and permanence be earned out of an item so lowin price. If some other home -entertainment business were runon the harmonica plan there would be surer sales and slimmerlosses. And absolutely all that can be said for the harmonicais that it is easy to play, portable and low in price. All thatcan be said for Rockefeller is that he has a thousand milliondollars.

Look at the group picture of the Victor talking machinejobbers' convention in Colorado Springs, 1921. Little morethan yesterday. But 10 of 90 men in it are dead. Forty-oneof the living are no longer in the Victor business. Nine othersare no longer in the home entertainment business.

Big stores are moving into the country. Best's, famousFifth avenue establishment, is opening branches in Mamaro-

neck, Westchester county, and Orange, New Jersey. Will littlestores begin moving into cities? Not if they have any sense.

Eleven men who have made important money in the linein the last ten years have not changed in manner or tempera-ment a particle. Some others w. h. m. i. m. have changed sothat their own mothers would not know them.

What intellectual quotient can be assigned to any job-

seeking individual who calls up someone whom he expects tohelp him get a position, before half -past nine of a Mondaymorning? If he had an intellectual quotient, would he knowwhat to do with it?

It is the brilliant competitive sense of broadcasting man-agements which leads them, if one system has a dance orches-tra at 8 o'clock, to put eighty-four other dance orchestras onat the same hour. And, if one has a talking number at nine,eighty-four others hire talkers for the same hour. The samekeen sense of enhancing radio's utility leads program arrang-ers, just now, to build their wow time around selections from"Sons o' Guns" and "Strike Up the Band."

Leap year is the year when you discover an advertisingmanager who is interested in the selling effect of his concern'sadvertising for the sake of the concern. Other auctionstores are to be opened from time totime in the metropolitan district, andnumerous innovations in radio mer-chandising are to be put into opera-tion by the new company, which has itsheadquarters at 18-22 West Eighteenthstreet, New York.

The three stores of the company arelocated at 111 West Forty - secondstreet, 16 Avenue B, both New York,and 1730 Pitkin avenue, Brooklyn.

The Chain Auction Syndicate dealsonly in surplus merchandise, and ac-cording to the Messrs. Nussbaum andSchwab, the firm is in the market tobuy out stores, factories and ware-houses. Lots of merchandise will beconsidered, regardless of size.

Brooklyn, metropolitan distributor ofthe products of the Crosley Radio Corp.,Cincinnati, is making an advance surveyof the New York market in connectionwith the new Crosley electric refriger-ator, which is scheduled to make itsappearance within sixty days.

This newest product of the Crosleycompany will retail at $50 to $75 lessthan any other standard make refriger-ator-of the same cubic foot capacity-according to reports.

L. H. Mingins, president of Twenti-eth Century, made the following reporton the new Crosley refrigerator:

"This refrigerator is equipped witha remarkably efficient unit having acold control which will freeze ice cubesin less than two hours, and a box whichis in itself a complete hydrator. Itdraws less than 100 watts, and is neces-sary to defrost but once every threemonths. The running operation innormal usage represents less than one-third of the hours in a day.

"The unit is small, compact, and iseasily detachable, and is at the bottomof the box. Refrigerant used is of thenon-poisonous variety and the new de-sign of the motor and compressor makeit not only fool -proof but silent."

Mr. Mingins also stated that theCrosley company will soon introduce tothe trade a low-priced automobile radioset using screen -grid tubes. The setwill be remotely controlled from thedash board.

Officials of the New York distribut-ing firm report that metropolitan radioand electrical dealers are unusuallyinterested in the Crosley refrigerator.

S. Jay Goldstein, long and favorablyknown in metropolitan retail and whole-sales cirles, left this week on a two-week vacation trip, marking the firsttime that the genial sales executivehas taken "time off" from active parti-cipation in trade affairs for the pastseveral years.

Captain William Sparks, head of theSparks-Withington Co., Jackson, Mich.,maker of Sparton radio, was the guestof honor at three radio gatherings dur-ing a recent one -day stopover in thiscity while on his way to Florida.

At noon he was the guest of honor ata meeting of the Memphis Radio Whole-salers Association and addressed thedistributors. In the afternoon he at-tended and addressed a sales conven-tion of the Dealers Equipment Co., thiscity and Little Rock, distributor forSparton radio. Later in the afternoonhe spoke for thirty minutes over WMC,and in the evening he attended a meet-ing of Sparton dealers of the Memphisand Little Rock territories and againspoke.

The cabinet of the set is of buttwalnut and is slightly more than threefeet high. Sensitivity of the set isunder the control of a "local distance"switch.

North American Zenith

Sales Show 40% Gain,

D. F. Goldman ReportsExtreme satisfaction over the pres-

ent business outlook was expressed byDavid F. Goldman, head of the NorthAmerican Radio Corp., New York, met-ropolitan Zenith distributor, upon hisreturn last week from a vacation inCuba and Florida. Mr. Goldman re-turned to his office to find that Zenithradio sales for January and Februaryof this year exceeded those of the samemonths last year by more than 40 percent.

"We achieved this mark in spite ofthe so-called business depression," Mr.Goldman declared upon going over hiscompany's sales figures. He also statedthat he looked forward to a prosperousyear for the company and the ZenithRadio Corp., Chicago.

"The elimination of a great manylines has placed the remaining manu-facturers in an enviable position, andZenith stability, Zenith quality andZenith's protective sales policy are nowmore firmly impressed on the dealersthan ever before," Mr. Goldman said.

"The Zenith Radio Corp. refuses tosacrifice quality for price, and will con-tinue to manufacture in line with themarket demands.

"Only a limited number of standardlines now remain, and I believe deal-ers have learned their lesson and willconcentrate on these few lines. Manu-facturers realize that overproductionhas been the curse of the industry.With the increase in business antici-pated within the next 60 to 90 days,radio will again take its place as aleader in home utility sales, and withthe inauguration of sane productionpolicies by manufacturers, 1930 shouldsee the elimination of surplus merchan-dise sales, cut prices and other evils ofthe past.

"October of last year saw a deflationof credits brought about by the stockmarket decline," Powell Crosley, Jr.,president of the Crosley Radio Corp.,stated here today. "Immediately thingsbecame normal. During all of theperiod of extravagance, when radiomanufacturers, almost without excep-tion, were concentrating sales effortson radio sets selling far in excess of$100, sets within the means of thegreat mass of the people were notavailable. It must be rememberedthat 87 per cent. of the adult malesof the United States have an income of$2,000 or less, a year. Surveys haveshown that even a larger percentageof non -radio owners falls into this class.

"Now purchases are again controlledby income. The radio dealer, jobberand manufacturer, to operate profitablyduring the next year or two, mustrecognize this fact. They must be ableto furnish radio apparatus within themeans of the masses the undevelopedand neglected market. Large turn -overrather than large unit profit mustgovern in the future.

The new Stromberg-Carlson 645 is aradio designed particularly to meet thespecial conditions where a set mustoperate on power from direct ratherthan the usual alternating currentsources.

This set, housed in a walnut finishedart console, employs screen grid tubesof latest design in three tuned radiofrequency circuits; a grid -bias detector,two resistance -coupled audio stages anda final push-pull power audio stage.The screen grid tubes effectively sup-ply the radio gain per stage necessarywith the low voltages available in aD.C. operated set, officials of the firmdeclare.

Because D.C. districts are usually inthe heart of a city where man-madestatic noises are prevalent. and becauseD.C. house lighting systems are usuallynoisier than A.C. lines, two extra pre-cautions for the elimination of noiseare provided with this radio. Theseare 75 feet of shielded lead-in wire anda special line noise filter. The shieldedlead-in prevents pick-up from externalnoise sources and by means of the fil-ter any radio frequency static noiseswhich might enter the set from thehouse lighting circuit are eliminatedand grounded.

The built - in dynamic speaker isequipped with a large sized cone andhas a special non -resonant baffle. Thisset, like all Stromberg-Carlsons, has aphonograph jack for electrical repro-duction of records in conjunction witha magnetic pick-up outfit.

The new No. 645 meets the need ofthousands of prospective radio pur-chasers living in D.C. districts whohave been awaiting a perfected screengrid radio for their particular needs,officials report.

MINNESOTA HOLDING UP AT NORMAL LEVELMINNEAPOLIS, MINN., Thursday.

A gain of 12 per cent. in radio salesin the Northwest over the year 1928was registered, according to reportsjust issued here by the NorthwestRadio Trade Association. Dealers inMinnesota, North Dakota, South Da-kota, Wyoming, Montana and parts ofIowa, Wisconsin and Michigan aidedin compiling the report, all showingsigns of an extremely live business,despite a poor closing for the year.

The report creates considerable opti-mism throughout the trade for the year1930, and an average of the percent-ages of increase expected is 20 per cent.over 1929. This would bring total salesof radio at retail price to over $50,-000,000 for 1930, with a radio set inat least half the homes of the North-west.

The report also shows a rising in-terest in radio in this territory. Thedaily use of sets is increasing rapidlyand dealers advise that once a familyhas installed a radio it is never foundwithout one after that.

Although Twin City reports are stilllargely unfavorable, those coming infrom the country points of the North-west are much more optimistic, and thetrade seems awakening to the begin-ning of a real business in the Spring.Dealers are sending in fairly largeorders and seemingly have every ex-pectation of a good trade.

Phonograph records are picking upin sales. The Columbia PhonographCo. here report a steadily increasingbusiness.

This idea has not permeated theNorthwest to any extent, but has founda very favorable reception in North-field, a college town.

R. O. Foster, of Foster & Waldo,Majestic distributors, is in Pass Chris-tian, Miss., for a short vacation.

A jobber for Brunswick is expectedto be named for the Twin Cities andsouthern Minnesota within a shorttime, it is stated. The Northwest willbe fairly well covered with this lastappointment, with jobbers handling allfuture sales.

A. R. Jewett has been appointed tosucceed F. W. Plant as president ofthe Plant Co., Fada distributors. Mr.Plant died here about a month ago.

With the Summer vacation justaround the corner, increasing sales ofportable radio sets are reported. Port-ables are becoming very popular as in-struments to be carried on a trip andset up after the destination has beenreached.

Large Building Program GettingUnder Way-Dealers' Group ofOhio Radio Trade Ass'n HoldsInteresting Meeting.

Cleveland, Ohio, Friday.

A feeling of optimism pervades thetrade as shown by the several largemeetings held this week of the Dealers'Group of the Ohio Radio Trades Asso-ciation and the Cleveland Music TradesAssociation. Both wholesalers and re-tailers feel that the corner has beenturned and with spring officially abouta week off, not only will the weatherimprove but business also. Clevelandhas a building program covering manymillions of dollars this year which willgo a long way to relieve the unemploy-ment situation, and some of this hasalready been started. There is moreadvertising of radio by manufacturersand distributors than has appeared fora considerable time past. All of whichis serving to create a desire in the pub-lic mind for sets that do not come underthe head of distress merchandise.

This week the music stores, espe-cially downtown, have a very good de-mand for records of theme songs ofpictures that are appearing at localtheatres and this is being accomplishedby the fine . tie --ups through windowdisplays and other means with thesepictures.

The program of the Ohio RadioTrades Association which has been ap-proved by the board of directors of theassociation was presented to the Deal-ers' Group at an enthusiastic meetingin the Euclid room of Hotel Statleron Monday evening. R. H. Bechtol,president of the association, was in thechair. In his opening talk Mr. Bechtolfirst called on the membership to standas a silent tribute to former presidentTaft. He then spoke briefly on thepresent situation in the trade and itsfuture outlook. He stressed the pointthat much harm was being done byrumors, regardless of whether theywere true or false. The radio business,he said, was going through a periodsimilar to that gone through by theautomobile industry in its early daysand the trade can bring order out ofchaos by using well defined merchandis-ing principles and close cooperation.The public need to be told the truthabout the business and this is the jobof every one connected with the indus-try.

He then called upon the chairmen ofthe various committees to give a five-minute talk apiece regarding their acti-vities. Joe Gannon told what his mem-bership committee were striving for,stressing that nothing could be accom-plished without cooperation. LambertFriedl told of the publicity programand called attention to the fine cooper-ation of the newspapers and said thatone paper had promised to publish aseries of articles on the industry whichwould be written by its local members.The first apeared last Sunday and waswritten by President R. H. Bechtol.Ralph Myers, of the Finance Commit-tee, told of a proposed finance companyfor local dealers and of the benefits

that would accrue by their forming agroup and joining the Cleveland RetailCredit Men's Association.

He was followed by William Gray,secretary of that organization, whooutlined the services it was in a posi-tion to render.

The advertising program was out-lined by Howard Shartle. He urged thatcopy be less general in ads and morespecific. Mr. Feegan, of the VigilanceCommittee, told dealers to communicatewith them on all matters which cameunder the jurisdiction of the committee.Mr. Nickerson, of the EntertainmentCommittee, promised well worth whileentertainment at all meetings. Thento prove his word he invited all to thebuffet lunch that was waiting.

President Bechtol announced that theassociation had decided to support theCapper -Kelly bill and ask for signa-ture to a petition for presentation tosenators and congressmen. SecretaryEldon Lewis gave a brief talk on thebil and Mr. Bechtol announced that Mr.Eldon would be sent to Washington inconection with the matter. Announce-ment was also made of a Radio Clinicwhich the association is sponsoring.The first meeting will be held in theauditorium of the Cleveland News onMarch 26th and the speaker will beHerbert E. Young; of the Grigsby-Gru-now Co. Subjects of vital importancewill be discussed at these weekly meet-ings and the speakers will be mennationally known in the trade.

The annual banquet and installationof officers of the Cleveland MusicTrades Association took place on Tues-day evening in the ballroom of HotelStatler with a very large attendance.A. L. Maresh, president, was in thechair, having hastened home fromFlorida for the event. Mr. Mareshthanked members for the honor theydid him in electing him president forfive successive terms and promised hisbest efforts on behalf of the association.The other officers, Vice-president HarryValentine and Secretary -treasurer Rex-ford C. Hyre were then installed. TheBannetes ladies orchestra from Chi-cago furnished music for the eveningan dthere was other fine entertainment.The principal speaker was RobertJones, of the Lyon & Healy Co., whogave a most interesting talk on "SomeCleveland Piano History." CharlesYahrling, past vice-president, alsospoke briefly. A demonstration wasgiven of the RCA Theremin. A humor-ous skit depicting a piano sale wasstaged. Arrangements for the affairwere in the hands of a committee head-ed by Ray Shorting who were givena vote of thanks for their fine workin making the affair such a success.Following the entertainment the floorwas cleared for (lancing which lasteduntil midnight.

Special window displays were madethis week of the Victor record, "TheRogue Song," the picture in which itis featured appearing at the State thea-tre this week. The Cleveland TalkingMachine Co., Victor distributors, reportthat their record business is keeping upremarkably well.

Lambert Friedl, president of RadioWholesalers, Inc., Bosch distributors,is receiving congratulations on a seriesof newspaper advertisments that areappearing and which stress the chancethe public take in buying distressedmerchandise. PITTSBURGH, PA., Monday.

An interesting display of radio setswas shown in a miniature radio exhibitat the Stanley Theatre here for oneweek. The exhibit was on the mezza-nine floor of the Stanley and was wide-ly advertised. Hundreds of persons,principally patrons of the motion pic-ture house, were visitors to the display.

On display were the following sets:Victor, Sparton, Majestic, Lyric, Phil -co, Stewart -Warner, Bosch, Brunswick,Atwater Kent and Steinite. Amplespace was devoted for the display ofthe various models. It is believed thatother exhibits will be held from timeto time in similar public places. Oneof the dealers, in referring to the show,said: "We found that the display, whilesmall, was select. People who visitedit had ample time to look, inspect andtalk it over. I am convinced that small-er radio displays, in the long run, aremore beneficial to the average radiodealer than the one big annual radioshow that is held. Mc-Causland's was founded more than 40years ago as a piano shop by the lateT. E. McCausland. Mr. Collins is ason-in-law of the founder. He said:"The new McCausland's will maintainthe most modern sales and service de-partment in Pittsburgh's retail elec-trical appliance and radio field."

George S. Hards, well-known Victordealer of Dormont, a suburb of Pitts-burgh, last week celebrated his elev-enth business anniversary. Mr. Hardsis one of the best known Victor dealersin the Pittsburgh district. He was forsome years manager of the retail Vic-tor department of the W. F. FrederickPiano Co. and later engaged in busi-ness for himself and built up a verysuccessful business.

The Stranburg Music Co., who oper-ate a chain of music and radio shopsin northwestern Pennsylvania will closethe store at Oil City, Pa., on April 1.It was established 31 years ago. Thegeneral offices are at Jamestown, N. Y.

H. F. Andre, manager for ThomasA. Edison, Inc., reports a rather briskdemand for the Edison Light-O-Matic.He stated that Edison dealers weremuch pleased with the price standtaken by the officials of the company.

Toronto, Canada, Thursday.Twelve passenger cars being built in

Canada for the Canadian NationalRailways are soon to be placed in ser-vice with built-in AC radio -phonographinstallations so wired that passengersmay plug in headphones from theirseats or compartments.

Twenty-two outlets for the head-phones are to be installed in each com-partment car and thirty-six outlets ineach lounge car. Each compartmentis to have two headphone outlets andeach drawing room three outlets.

The testimony of the retail trade hasby this time become too unanimous topermit of a doubt about there being apercentage of improvement in activity.While it is true that some are notdoing as much as when they were put-ting over sales on unnloading merchan-dise, it is also true that they are enjoy-ing a fair run of unforced sales, whilethose who have not resorted to forcedsales have increased their volume.

Miss Grace Rubiola, assistant in theJackson radio department, reports thattheir sales are on the upgrade sincesunny weather has begun to smile tinOakland. They have been specially pro-moting the sale of combination instru-ments, and with considerable success,as sales of these are in the lead. Theyare especially interested in these asthey have always had a splendid rec-ord department, and they are still be-lievers in the value of maintaining andpushing the record department. All theforce were pleased to see the smilingface of W. W. Cross again this morn-ing. He has been taking a trip to Ore-gon, and has left for a sojourn on theranch before coming back to take upthe work of the department.

The Wurlitzer branch in Oakland isnow holding its seventy-third annualclearance sale, meaning, of course, theseventy-third annual sale of the Wur-litzer company. They are offering lib-eral discounts and easy terms in cele-bration of the event, and making it theoccasion for unloading good trade-inmerchandise. While pianos have notbeen going so big, they are able to re-port quite a lively trade in radio.

The Oakland Music Co., Bernard S.Goldsmith in charge, has again givenway to the California Phonograph Co.This is a branch of the California Pho-nograph Co. of San Francisco. NeilLansing has been placed in charge, andhe is starting out in a way that lookslike real business. While the windowfrontage is not large, he has been mass-ing the display in the two narrow win-dows in such a way as to make it looklike one of the big things in the block,and the Victor on one side with theMajestic on the other, are making twovery pretty pictures. The location in

the first block of San Pablo just off fromwhat may be considered the pivotalpoint of the city's business, is one ofthe finest in the city for transienttrade, and hence window displays be-come of prime importance. Back thisup with an attractive interior, a pleas-ant greeting and a little good sales-manship, just a little, and one has aPicture of one of the opportunnities inOakland.

The Premier Radio Co. is the nameof a store that shows up well at 1115Broadway in Oakland. It has a longlist of models with but few lines omit-ted all down one length of the store,with an unusual stock of accessoriesadded to electrical goods on the other.

R. A. O'Connor, president of theMagnávox Co., in a letter to stock-holders, reveals that they are definitelyconsidering a merger with some otherinterests that will be advantageous tothem, though the interests involved arenot clearly revealed. The company wasincorporated in 1917 under the laws ofArizona. . But as the law of Arizonadoes not give to their organization suf-ficient flexibility for the proposed merg-ing, they incorporated recently underthe laws of Delaware as Magnavox Co.,Ltd. The stock of the new company

is no par stock. And the propositionis to exchange share for share for the730,800 shares now outstanding unnderthe Arizona charter. As there will beother shares to be placed on the mar-ket, application has already been madeto list the new stock on the San Fran-cisco Stock Exchange.

That there is a larger percentage ofthe people who appreciate some reallyclassical music over the radio than isgenerally supposed is evidenced in thefrequent compliments that are beingpassed from neighbor to neighbor inconnection with the Atwater Kent hour.It is not an infrequent matter to hearpeople rejoicing that they can enjoysuch entertainment in their homes asthey could never afford before.

The San Francisco Radio Retailersstaged an interesting supper at Mar -guard's recently when they securedJudge Frank T. Deasy to speak on theTime Payment Contracts that havebeen handled in his court; using thistheme to impart to the association valu-able information how to handle con-tracts in such a way as to avoid losses.

Evidence that South America is prov-ing a fertile field for the sale of Amer-ican -made radios is indicated by theappointment of Propiedad S. A. RestaHermanos, Buenos Aires, as exclusivedistributor of Stewart -Warner screen -grid radio in the Argentine.

This concern, capitalized at $2,000,-000, has until now confined its activi-ties solely to the distribution of motorcars but, with the improvement ofbroadcasting facilities both in SouthAmerica and in the countries to thenorth, the demand for sets has becomeso great taht the directors were in-duced to add radio to other lines han-dled.

"We deem this an important step inthe expansion of our own radio mar-ket," said W. J. Zucker, vice-presidentand general sales manager of theStewart -Warner Corp., this city, "andare pleased to know that our radio hasmet the approval of this aggressiveSouth American business house."

An initial shipment of two carloadsof radio was started for the Argentinethis week.

While population ofthese cities is not keeping up the rapidrate of advance noted during partsof the last decade, dealers observe thatthere areplenty of unsold ,prospectsand the total contribution made to thestate's volume of radio business thisyear will include a very substantialquota from the cities and towns of tenthousand population and under. Theradio storesin such locations keep upa steady grind, and in general are ex-pecting a normal volume of businessduring the spring months, and turninga good list of sales from week to week.Their operations are as a whole wellmanaged, and they add a good deal ofstalibity to the general market.

Coronado Radio & Electric store, at1120 Orange, conducted by C. H. T.Martin and C. W. [nee, appears to behaving a lively run of trade. As the center of technical under-standing and progress in radio, theregion around San Diego bay holdsmuch of interest to the engineeringfraternity. Radio in the navy has de-veloped a fine group of technicians,aboard ship and at the San Diego navalradio station, which rates high amongstthe world's great stations both in equip-ment and accomplishment in advance-ment in the art. As an aviation centerthis region will undoubtely make fur-ther contributions in applications ofradio communication along lines in-tensely interesting to engineers. Withthis background it is not surprising tofind amongst the residents a number ofunusual enthusiasm and practical at-tainments.

R. D. Mumford, Roberta Apartments,Tenth and Beech streets, San Diego,informs the correspondent of TheTALKING MACHINE and RADIOWEEKLY that after three years ofexperimenting and spending severalthousand dollars in research he hassucceeded in building a compact, practi-cal combination long and short waveAC set. One set works on wave lengthsfrom 10 to 10,000 meters, and picks upall the way through that range. Turna knob and the set changes from longto short wave reception, bringing inforeign countries. He believes the setcan be built to sell around $200 to $250.

Radio dealers in this section havegot around to the point of believingthat prosperity is a local issue. En-couraging prospects to buy promptly isreceiving a lot of thoughtful considera-tion. The number of inquirers is re-ported as picking up, and if some areover cautious sales talks are being builtup to meet the situation. In this con-nection a well read dealer remarksthat he derived much benefit from read-ing an article by Ernest Elmo Calkinsin the March Review of Reviews. Theauthor remarks "It must not be for-gotten that there are thousands of Mrs.ones who do not yet know there hasbeen a slump in the stock market."

This dealer believes in getting goodson the floor, and that the first steptoward normal selling is normal buyingfor the season. He repeats with con-siderable relish the simple analogyused by Mr. Calkins to show the func-tion of money. "In a certain office thebookkeeper owne dthe stenographertwo cents. The stenographer owned theoffice boy two cents. And the office boyowed the bookkeeper two cents. The Oregon sales agency of the Gen-eral Motors Radio Corp., which is oper-ating in the Oregon territory throughthe Condon Co., Inc., has leased thecorner of Eleventh and Alder, Portland,Ore., for distribution purposes.

Firm in the conviction that the WestCoast is the best radio market in Amer-ica, Nat Feldstern, president of thechain of American Radio Stores, Inc.,plans some interesting expansion in thePacific Northwest. Mr. Feldstern wasin Seattle last week, accompanied byJoseph Silverman, Pacific Coast man-ager. A Tacoma branch will be estab-lished immediately and a greater dis-tribution handled from the Seattle storeat 1901 Third avenue. American RadioStores, Inc. will carry several lines ofsets. Thees stores which are estab-lished in all leading Pacific Coast citieshave reported a heavy volume of salesthis winter, according to Mr. Feldstern.

Amateur robbers attempted to robthe safe of Meyer -Toner Piano Co.here, during the week. The combina-tion was knocked off the safe, whichhowever, they were unable to open.They took a radio valued at $100, two$25 piano scarfs and a quantity ofpostage stamps.

Jean Armand, who has long beenidentified with the dramatic and the-atrical life of the Pacific Coast, hasjoined the staff of the S. L. CrossMusic Corp., of Seattle, as vice-presi-dent. He will have complete chargeof exploiting and promoting the firm'spublications. The firm is but six monthsold, yet it is already firmly establishedTwo successful numbers have beenbrought out. Branches have been estab-lished in San Francisco and Los An-geles and eastern connections will beformed in the near future. SylvesterGross is president of the firm.

Julius Bogatin, general manager andhead of the purchasing department ofthe Coast Radio Co. of Seattle, in a re-cent interview stated that the trendnow is unquestionable toward the screengrid tubes, as indicated by his com-pany's sales. Mr. Bogarth has hadexperience with every type of radioreceiving set made since 1920. He re-ported the sale of 1,200 Philco setsduring the month of January, statingthat this number exceeded that for anyfive -month period previously. CoastRadio Co. now handles Philco exclu-sively in this territory. In advertisingthe new line Coast Radio announcedthat carnations would be given all wo-men shoppers and balloons to all chil-dren. In one day alone by actualcounts, 500 women called to hear andexamine the new models, while 150 ofthe toy balloons were given the young-sters.

Patton, William Watson has super-vision over the service department.Schuster has had a wide experience ex-tending over a period of years. He waswith the Radio Corporation of Americaand later with the Sparks-WithingtonCo., manufacturers of Sparton radiosfor which Seattle Hardware Co. is dis-tributor in this territory.

Northwest Conn Co., located at 1421Third avenue, in the Hopper -Kelly Co.store, has recently made a number ofimprovements anti rearranged the de-partment. Neat, attractive displays ofsmall goods in well lighted cases arenow carried in the main floor. In addi-tion private instrument rooms, devotedto violins, banjos, saxophones, etc., arelocated on the balcony. Gus Middle-ton, well known specialist in band in-struments and small goods, has joinedthe staff. He was formerly in chargeof small goods for Sherman, Clay &Co., of this city, where he built a splen-did reputation for the stimulation ofschool bands and orchestras. Cheapband instruments are now a negligiblequantity, according to Mr. Middleton,who states that today people are buy-ing musical instruments with betterjudgment and are purchasing good in-struments which are more in the natureof an investment and which will havea re -sale value, rather than the oldtime cheaper type which must be scrap-ped when their usefulness was over.He attributes much of this educationof the musically inclined public to thetype of programs broadcast today andsays that the grading up is most notice-able in the sale of violins and band in-struments.

Radio sales have again started onthe upward trend and indications arethat conditions will show a marked im-provement during the next two months.Stocks of distressed merchandise arebeing rapidly depleted, much to thesatisfaction of the local dealers.

The North Central Distributors, Vic-tor wholesalers in this territory, reportan increased demand for the album ofGregorian Chants, and also the Chris-tian Science Hymns recorded in themother church at Boston. The RogueSong, which is to be released here inthe very near future, is expected tosell exceptionally well, judging fromreports received from the west coastwhere it has been on the market forsome time. It is said that in many in-stances merchants have been swampedwith orders selling out their entirestocks.

Amrad and Crosley sets are sellingfairly well at the present time, con-sidering trade conditions, according tothe George C. Beckwith Co., distribu-tors in this territory. With the im-provement of general business condi-tions during the next two months, saleswill again mount.

The Badger Radio Corp., distributorsof Majestic radios, report that businessis fairly good and that dealers areanxiously awaiting the arrival of thenew Majestic refrigerator. Set salesare expected to show a considerable in-crease within the next two months. E.Durr, general sales manager of thefirm, is out on a week's trip throughthe State.

Approximately twenty Bosch dealersfrom all parts of Milwaukee attendeda sales meeting at the offices of theInterstate Sales Co., at 191 Fourthstreet, on Monday, March 10. The newBosch motor car radio can now beviewed at the firm's display room. De-liveries to dealers on these new setswill be made within the course of thenext two weeks.

F. A. Quandt, Majestic dealer ofBeaver Darn is recuperating in Mil-waukee from the effects of an opera-tion. He expects to be back at hispost within a week or so to serve hisfellow Beaver Danvers.

Radio dealers in West Allis, Milwau-kee's largest suburb, report that Janu-ary and February sales of this yeardo not equal those of 1929. With theimprovement of general business condi-tions, sets are expected to move at afaster gait.

The West Allis Music Shop, at thecorner of Sixty-fourth and Greenfield,reports that Atwater Kent, Spartonand Victor sets are selling fairly wellat the present time, considering tradeconditions. Record sales continue toimprove, it is said.

Fads sets are moving along at afairly good pace, according to the Cen-tral Radio and Sporting Goods Store,near the corner of Sixty-third andGreenfield. With the improvement of

general business conditions, sales forthis Spring are expected to increase.

The Circuit Electric Co. store atFifty-first and Greenfield will confineitself to the sale of Majestic radiosexclusively in the future. Prospectsfor the Spring season are said to bevery good.

Bosch and Sparton radios are mov-ing along at a fairly good pace, ac-cording to the West Allis SportingGoods House. January and Februarysales are said to have been good.

Distributors and retailers of radioare decidedly optimistic over the Springoutlook in Toledo and northwesternOhio. The reason for this is that onthe whole conditions are somewhat im-proved and the feeling is widespreadthat industrial conditions will soonshow considerable speed in roundingout a more stable situation among themanufacturers here, with consequentwider employment.

The Toledo Radio Co. announces thatin addition to the Sparton radio it hastaken on the OE Simplex radio forautomobiles. The line will be pushedvigorously and it is the belief of Chas.H. Womeldorff, president that the linewill not alone bridge the Summer gapbut that it will prove a popular itemwith motorists. In fact, a survey hasshown that the market for such radioawaits development. Among aggressiveSparton retailers, Chester Ricketts ofTiffin, Ohio, during the past 30 dayshas met with phenomenal success inselling Spartons in Seneca county. CarlMcMillan, of Lima, Ohio, through hissystem of personal contact, has devel-oped a fine batch of raw business re-cently.

At the Columbus Radio Co., Colum-bus, of which Edgar A. Kopf is gen-eral manager, sales judged by condi-tions are holding up very well. B. M.Lepley, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, has start-ed a Spring drive for business and hasclosed a number of fine deals. Bell &Willison, of Cambridge, Ohio, Spartondealers, report a considerable awake-ning of radio demand. Mr. Kopf stat-ed that the company will exhibit theEvinrude line of outboard motors, forwhich it is agent, at the Outdoor LifeExposition, March 29 to April 5.

According to H. H. Henkes, generalmanager of James C. MacDermott Co.,Philco distributor, sales are movingalong steadily and the Spring outlookis promising.

In our last letter we stated inadvert-ently that C. V. Chew has been ap-pointed sales promotion manager ofJames MacDermott Co., Philco whole-sale distributor in nine northwesternOhio counties. This is an error andshould have read that Charles E.Thompson has been appointed to thatpost. C. V. Chew leads the wholesalesales unit.

The MacDermott company has re-cently added thirty retail salesmen toits organization under the supervisionof J. E. Waite, J. M. Beroset and E. C.Sawade.

Grinnell Bros. attracted widespreadattention to the store the past weekthrough the demonstrations of the RCATheremin, an instrument representingthe first major adventure of electricalscience in the field of new musical in-struments. Theremin music programswere heard during the afternoon andevening in Grinnell auditorium. LeonTheremin, young Russian scientist, isthe inventor.

Thos. Taylor, new Grinnell manager,is making a number of improvementsin the store. Departments have beenrearranged and the establishment deco-rated throughout. The house special-izes in Victor products.

The Basil Radio Co. held its monthlydinner for salesmen and their wives atthe Hotel Secor, last Saturday evening.

Manager H. R. McLaughlin stated thiswill continue to be a regular feature.\Vm. Croke, sales manager of Roberts -Toledo Co., addressed the group. Thehouse is carrying on an extensive homedemonstration campaign on Majestic.Sets are left in the home but two eve-nings; after that, unless a decision isreached, they are returned to the store.Each morning at 8:30 a sales meetingis held at the office. Recent additionsto the sales staff include Robt. Lush,Frank Warner, D. Sweeney, F. H.Chaffie and L. R. Jenkins.

The Cleveland Talking Machine Co.,Toledo branch, Norman Cook districtmanager, held a luncheon on Thursdayfor Victor dealers here, at the Com-modore Perry hotel. Howard Shartle,president, was in the chair. Springplans were discussed and a campaignfor promoting sales suggested.

At the Lion Store Music Rooms andRadio Shoppe, a Spring drive is inprogress on Amrad models. Attractivewindows and extensive announcementscharacterize the campaign. Lawson S.Talbert, manager, stated the buyingpower of the average workingman hasdropped, and the average price of radiosets will naturally have to change tomeet this condition. Record sales hereare leaning towards numbers from thecurrent musical film successes, MissZoa Osborn reported.

Assets of the Radio Maintenance Co.,1400 Huron street, were sold at auc-tion on Friday by H. W. Voss, trustee,for the benefit of creditors. Too manyfrozen assets is given as the cause ofthe failure.

Clifford Johnson, president of thePark Lane Radio Co., told members ofthe Toledo Advertising Co., at theWednesday luncheon, that a telephonecheck of people listening to the "Ma-jestic School of the Air" Tuesdays andThursdays reveals that 50 per cent. ofthose called now listen in. He alsosaid that during the first twelve daysof the Majestic drive by the house,twice as many sets were sold as dur-ing the entire month of January. "HowWe Sell Sets During Bad Times" wasthe title of his talk. The enterprisehas 100 Majestic sets out on three-daydemonstration. The sales force hasbeen increased front 8 to 20 men.

At the J. W. Greene Co. the newVictor combination RE -154 is upon thefloors and is the object of much inter-est. W. W. Smith, president, and Win.W. Baillie, manager of the radio de-partment, visited the Capehart plantat Fort Wayne, Ind., on Friday for thepurpose of inspecting new models. Mr.Baillie stated the house will shortly be-gin an extensive drive on the Capehart,three divisions of this instrument willbe concentrated upon schools.

Miss Helen Baumgardner, in chargeof records at Greene's, stated: "St.James Infirmary," "Song of the Is-lands" and "Putting on the Ritz" arenumbers with wide appeal.

Henry F. Stucke, associated withGrinnell Bros. for 23 years, the lastseven of which he was general mana-ger of the local store, has joined thestaff of the G. P. Crosby Co., realtors.Before coming to Toledo he was mana-ger of the Grinnell Jackson, Mich.,house. He has a wide acquaintance inToledo.

The recent public hearing on thesubject of proposed legislation banningradio sets in motor cars in this state,held before the Public Works Commis-sion, gave evidence of the popular inter-est in radio for the motor car, accord-ing to Roy Davey, advertising man-ager for the American Bosch Magnet"Corp. Of more than two hundred at-tending the hearing, only five register-ed in favor of the bill. These five laterwithdrew from the meeting allowingthe vote to be unanimous in favor ofunrestricted use of motor car radio.

Mr. Davey's interest in the proceed-ings were of particular interest be-cause of the design of the new Boschmotor car set.

One of the most spectacular and mostsuccessful publicity stunts ever under-taken in southern Texas for the pro-motion of Atwater Kent sales wasstaged recently by the Straus -FrankCo., distributor in San Antonio andthis city.

Fourteen window displays in out-standing downtown locations, many ofthese being stores not even remotelyinterested in the sale of Atwater Kentradio or other musical merchandise,were used in the drive.

The radio business in this territorygenerally is fair with a steady im-provement in demand, according todealers and distributors. Record busi-ness shows considerable betterment inseveral instances over last year duringthe same period, which leads the indus-try to believe that that branch of thebusiness is staging a come -back.

Paul's Music Store, Inc., after eightyears in business in the same store at1103 Walnut street, is to be enlarged todouble its old space, according to M.M. Paul. The partition dividing Paul'sfrom the next shop south has been re-moved.

There will be a curved stairway witha grilled iron balustrade leading up totwo display rooms where radios willhe demonstrated and where Mrs. Paulwill have a private office. Downstairsthere will be the same record depart-ment, but the shop will be much lesscrowded and there will be room for thecontinuous display of art model ma-chines.

Formerly a record and Victrola store,two years ago radios were taken onand since that time the demand forthem has increased so much it hasnecessitated enlarged quarters. Aformal opening of the new establish-ment will be held soon. In the mean-time temporary quarters only a fewdoors from the store are being occupied.

The L. E. Lines Music Co. and theService Electric Co., of Springfield, Mo.,both derived considerable benefit fromthe use of the Majestic public addressspstem at the annual Industrial Foodand Auto Show there recently. ANeon Majestic sign was suspendedfrom the large horn constructed overthe stage. The show was well attendedand both dealers received many leadsfrom their booths:

The Sterling Co. rang a campaignon Model 92 during two weeks recentlyand sold 750 sets, which established arecord. Combinations are selling verywell which gives Mr. Willis basis forthe belief that record business willcome back this year. The record busi-ness opened up better during Marchthan in January and February, he said.The company will soon conduct its Ma-jestic courtesy inspection month whenthey will check all Majestic sets in theterritory and see that they are workingproperly before the summer period.The Majestic Radio Color -Tone test isalready arousing considerable interestand will be put into advertising imme-diately. The Majestic Club memberstook the test and the average for thegroup was less than 70 per cent.-which indicates the need for a littlemore music appreciation among thosewho sell musical instruments.

The Kipp Music Co., at Manhattan,Kansas, recently conducted a censuswhich showed that there were 1054 whoowned radios and 487 who didn't out of2155 canvassed.

L. C. Brady, of the Graybar ElectricCo. division, here, reports dull activityin radio.

F. H. Lincoln, 66, office manager herefor the Stromberg-Carlson Co., suffer-ed a stroke March 11 and died thesame day. His funeral was held atthe Newcomer Chapel March 14. Mr.Lincoln had been with the Stromberg-Carlson company at this office for thepast 16 years.

Radio business is fairly strong withthe Stromberg-Carlson division here,according to Kenneth Gillespie, mana-ger of the radio deartment. Combi-nations are selling nicely while model846 and the two models released inJanuary-the 652 and 654-are toppingthe list.

Thosedealers who are promoting sales bydoor-to-door efforts and by direct mailcontact and other activities along thisline report growing business.

The sales that have occurred withinrecent weeks have been fairly wellcleaned up and the trade is lookingforward to gradually improved andstabilized radio business with the ad-vent of springtime. The offerings madeby manufacturers who discontinuedlines of receiving sets are about overand the trade is taking a more cheer-ful attitude.

The Bosch Radio Distributors, 45 N.Seventh street, which is a subsidiary ofthe Lewis Radio Distributors, are con-tinuing to campaign on the Bosch radiosas the springtime sales policies arenow under way in their territory whichincludes southern New Jersey, easternPennsylvania, Delaware and Philadel-phia.

PrinceKamel Hassan is of the Turkish dynas-ty which ruled Macedonia and is theson of Pasha Emin Hassan, who wasassasinated during the Balkan Wars ascore of years ago. He came to thiscountry upon the death of his father atthe age of eight years and was senthere to complete his education by theRegent Mehemet appointed to reignduring his minority and who was hisuncle. He was educated in privateschools in Manchester, N. H., wherethere was a large colony of Turkishcitizens and later completed his educa-tion at Boston College and at the Man-hattan College in New York where hewas captain of the football and baseball teams. He has had broad experi-ence which fits him for the special ser-vice as manager of the newly createdMotors Parts Co. resale department.

The turn in the road is believed nearat hand, according to the consensusof manufacturers and wholesale dis-tributors interviewed this week. Mostof the cheaper distress stock has beenworked off the local market through thedepartment stores ,and there is ex-pected shortly a period when regular1930. merchandise can be offered thepublic at standardized prices. Witnessespecially the announcement thatGrigsby-Grunow have stated that theprice of their Model 92 will be advancedin price April 1. Also the announce-ment being broadcast by Sparton deal-ers that effective March 15, the priceof the Sparks-Withington model No.589 will be advanced $5.00. What thesetwo concerns do will undoubtedly beemulated by other manufacturers, thewhole action tending to firm up thelocal market. Those who have had the"blues" heretofore are showing evi-dence of getting over them and aretalking in a more optimistic vein.

Leonard Cohen, head of the radiodepartment of the Triangle ElectricCo., returned early this week from anextensive business trip East.

Donald Compton, vice-president andgeneral manager of the U. S. Radio &Television Corp., Marion, Ind., an-nounces that he will sever his connec-tion with the company April 1, at whichtime he will be succeeded here by J.Clarke Coit. Mr. Compton intends togo to Paris, where he will spend amonth or so resting up, though justwhat he will do upon his return is un-certain as yet. The U. S. Television& Radio Corp. plant at Marion is work-ing at an average rate, turning outenough sets to meet demand, it is said.

J. L. Clarkson, district manager forthe Triad Mfg. Co., who covers practi-cally the northern half of Illinois andthe southern half of Wisconsin, saysthe situation is much more satisfac-tory than it was a month or so ago.

Clarence S. Tay, of C. S. president.His radio affiliation began with the

King Manufacturing Co., of Buffalo,N. Y., during the early days of theart. Later he served in the same capa-city for United Reproducers Corp., ofRochester, manufacturer of Peerlessloud speakers. Prior to his entrancein radio Mr. Haugh was an executivein the automotive industry and forthree years was president of the Na-tional Standard Parts Association.

Mr. Tully is a pioneer Chicago radiomanufacturer and with Mr. Haugh isone of the founders of the Radio Manu-facturers' Association. He was presi-dent of the Bremer -Tully Manufactur-ing Co. for seven years, until the closeof 1928, when he disposed of the com-pany to Brunswick.

As the representative of financial in-terests, during the period of financialreadjustment in the radio industry, Mr.Tully has served as "business doctor"for a number of involved radio com-panies.

In commenting upon Steinite's newstatus, Mr. Tully said:

"I feel that Steinite's reorganizationwill prove successful. To insure a con-tinuity of management a voting trustagreement has been put into effect.Principal stockholders have voluntarilyapproved the plan and are voicinghearty approval. Many friendly lettershave been received from stockholders,generally.

"The new factory here is providedthroughout with modern equipment ofthe highest type, and is able to pro-duce quality radio sets on an efficientand economical basis. Unfortunatelythis plant got into operation just atthe time the general slump in the in-dustry occurred and when normal dis-tribution was so seriously disturbed.But with most of the distress merchan-dise of the entire industry off the mar-ket, Steinite enters a period most favor-able to its success."

A new selector of audible frequen-cies, a unit designed for voice controlin talking pictures, has recently beendeveloped by the Triad Mfg. Co., thiscity, maker of Triad tubes.

The SAF 3. as this new device isknown, may be considered as a devicewhich separates the sound into threechannels, each of which can be con-trolled independently, according to offi-cials of the company. It acts as agate which can he opened or closedthereby limiting the proportion of thesefrequency bands passing through to theamplifier.

The channel meeting correction maybe selected by the means of threeswitches marked low, medium and highregister. The amount of correction isgoverned by means of a variable con-trol knob, the percentage of correctionincreasing as the knob is turned to aclockwise direction.

One SAF 3 is said to he sufficient forany installation.

OUTLINES MAJESTIC REFRIGERATOR PLANSBoston, Mass., Friday.

Herbert E. Young, general sales man-ager of Grigsby-Grunow Co., of Chi-cago, manufacturers of Majestic radios,arrived at the Boston Airport March13th, in the $65,000 Sikorsky amphi-bian plane Majestic from New YorkCity, after a tour of the northeast,where the first formal announcementof the Majestic Electric Refrigeratorwas made.

New factories for this refrigeratorline, according to Mr. Young, now inthe process of completion at Chicago,will be equipped to produce 1,000,000refrigerators per year. Production ofthis addition to the Majestic will bestarted at the earliest possible mo-ment consistent with the manufactureof quality products.

"Majestic has produced and sold inless than two years in excess of 2,-000,000 radio sets," said E. H. Mc-Carthy, general sales manager of Ma-jestic Distributors, Inc., "indicatingthat Grigsby-Grunow is capable ofproducing a refrigerator of highestquality as evidenced by the outstandingquality of its radio and at a price with-in the reach of the masses because ofthe production scale planned."

In outlining sales plans for 1930 Mr.Young stated that Majestic is deter-mined to break all sales records againwith their popular set. He further inti-mated that prices for good radioswould not be lower, but rather higherduring the coming season.

IN RADIO INDUSTRY IN GREAT BRIIAINIt.'SHINGTON, D. C., Friday.

There are approximately 200 to 220manufacturers of radio sets in GreatBritain. However, there are a greatmany manufacturers specializing incertain wireless components, who arenot designated as manufacturers ofsets. and, therefore, are not includedin this figure, the Department of Com-merce announced today.

There are about nine American man-ufacturers of radio sets whose productis now appearing on the British mar-ket. but it is the impression of thosefamiliar with the radio market that theexports of radio sets by these com-panies is negligible. The value of allradio apparatus exported from theUnited States to the United Kingdomin 1929, according to the United Statesexport figures, amounted to $631,186,of which only $20,801 was accountedfor by receiving sets.

American manufacturers export aconsiderable volume of radio apparatus,components, and accessories to GreatBritain. The value of components ship-ped to the country during 1929, accord-ing to export figures, reached a totalof $205,362; loud speakers accountedfor $208,444 worth, and accessories$118,946.

There are about 180 distributors, orjobbers, who are recognized in theradio industry of Great Britain. Thisnumber appears in a list of the RadioWholesalers' Federation as being ap-proved by the Federation. This list,however, omits large numbers of com-panies which have a genuine wholesale

business. In addition to this numberthere are about 100 who call themselvesjobbers, but who are in fact only re-tailers. The distinction between a re-tailer and a jobber, or wholesaler,should be carefully drawn, for the rea.eon that the number of retailers ofradio sets runs into thousands.

It is estimated that there are about6,000 radio dealers who handle nothingbut radio apparatus in the UnitedKingdom and thousands of others whohandle radio apparatus as an adjunctor side line.

Various estimates are given as to theannual volume of radio business donein Great Britain, and one firm gives afigure of between $50,000,000 and $75,-000,000. This estimate is based on thetotals, including the total volume ofbusiness transacted in radio sets, com-ponents, loud speakers, tubes, high-ten-sion batteries for radio sets, etc. Onthe other hand, another opinion isgiven that the total annual volume ofradio business transacted in radio sets,portable sets. and components only isbetween $9,000,000 and $10,000,000.

Further evidence as to the volumeof business done in Great Britain dur-ing the year is found in the estimateadvanced by one large dealer in radiosets and components that the numberof radio sets manufactured in the Uni-ted Kingdom during 1929 was approxi-mately 200,000, which does not includea large number of unassembled kits orparts that have been sold by some ofthe radio -tube manufacturers to popu-larize their products. -McG.
