A real passionfor community
Give back: Lawyer Kerry Kyriakoudes, and now a Fellow of UOW,urged graduates to be involved in community life. Picture: ROBERT PEET
By SAM HALL
KERRY Kyriakoudesspoke from personal ex-perience when he encour-aged graduates at theUniversity of Wollongongto give back to their com-munities.
The father of four, whowas admitted as a Fellowof the university, and de-livered yesterday’s occa-sional address, urgedgraduates to be mindfulof their success and theirpotential to give back tothe community.
The Hansons Lawyerspartner has had an ex-tensive role in the com-munity since graduatingfrom the University ofSydney in 1978.
Mr Kyriakoudes waschairman of the IllawarraEthnic CommunitiesCouncil for eight yearsand president of the Aus-tralian Federation ofCyprus Communities for
six years. He continues tobe involved with com-munity groups.
‘‘I urged the graduatesto get involved with com-munity organisationsthrough activities.
‘‘I just wanted to en-courage an idea thatwhen an opportunitycomes, if they can devotesome of their capacity, time and skill towards thecommunity, they will helprepay the indebtednesswe all have for being ableto study at university.’’
Although he didn’tstudy at UOW, Mr Kyria-koudes has been on theuniversity’s council forthe past 12 years.
He said the honoraryfellowship provided areal link to the university.
‘‘I studied at SydneyUniversity because therewas no law faculty inWollongong at the time, sothis is really important tome,’’ he said.
International flavour addsto double degree honour
Home and away: Sarah Fusco had twodegrees to celebrate yesterday.
By SAM HALL
SARAH Fusco’s road to graduationhas been a long and winding one, with a European detour along theway.
After finishing her HSC with a99.25 score, the 24-year-old hasstudied tirelessly most weekends forthe past 61⁄2 years.
‘‘I went straight into the degreefollowing school, but it took a bitlonger than usual because I studiedin Belgium for six months,’’ she said.
The hard work has certainly paidoff. Excelling in all her subjects, MsFusco’s work has also featured ininternational journals andconference papers.
The Fairy Meadow resident
graduated with a double degreeBachelor of Information andCommunication Technology(Honours) and Bachelor of Laws(Honours) yesterday.
She was among a host of elatedgraduates awarded at yesterday’sUniversity of Wollongong wintergraduation ceremonies.
Despite her achievements, MsFusco insisted the hard work hadn’tstopped yet.
‘‘I’ve been working full-time withMacquarie Bank in their IT lawdivision,’’ she said.
‘‘I have to finish my workplacement for law so that I can beadmitted at the end of the year, sothe celebrations will probably bedelayed until then.’’
Worth celebrating: Bachelor of Com-merce Accounting Rochelle Harrison is
congratulated by Peter Macintyre.
Family pride: Wayne and Lynn Griffiths were at the University of Wollongonggraduations with Myah and Troy Bramstedt to watch Master of ScienceMidwifery Alison Bramstedt receive her degree. Pictures: ROBERT PEET
