Picture: ROBERT PEET By SAM HALL KERRY Kyriakoudes spoke from personal ex- perience when he encour- aged graduates at the University of Wollongong to give back to their com- munities. The father of four, who was admitted as a Fellow of the university, and de- livered yesterday’s occa- sional address, urged graduates to be mindful of their success and their potential to give back to the community. The Hansons Lawyers partner has had an ex- tensive role in the com- munity since graduating from the University of Sydney in 1978. Mr Kyriakoudes was chairman of the Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council for eight years and president of the Aus- tralian Federation of Cyprus Communities for six years. He continues to be involved with com- munity groups. ‘‘I urged the graduates to get involved with com- munity organisations through activities. ‘‘I just wanted to en- courage an idea that when an opportunity comes, if they can devote some of their capacity, time and skill towards the community, they will help repay the indebtedness we all have for being able to study at university.’’ Although he didn’t study at UOW, Mr Kyria- koudes has been on the university’s council for the past 12 years. He said the honorary fellowship provided a real link to the university. ‘‘I studied at Sydney University because there was no law faculty in Wollongong at the time, so this is really important to me,’’ he said. International flavour adds to double degree honour Home and away: Sarah Fusco had two degrees to celebrate yesterday. By SAM HALL SARAH Fusco’s road to graduation has been a long and winding one, with a European detour along the way. After finishing her HSC with a 99.25 score, the 24-year-old has studied tirelessly most weekends for the past 6 1 2 years. ‘‘I went straight into the degree following school, but it took a bit longer than usual because I studied in Belgium for six months,’’ she said. The hard work has certainly paid off. Excelling in all her subjects, Ms Fusco’s work has also featured in international journals and conference papers. The Fairy Meadow resident graduated with a double degree Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) yesterday. She was among a host of elated graduates awarded at yesterday’s University of Wollongong winter graduation ceremonies. Despite her achievements, Ms Fusco insisted the hard work hadn’t stopped yet. ‘‘I’ve been working full-time with Macquarie Bank in their IT law division,’’ she said. ‘‘I have to finish my work placement for law so that I can be admitted at the end of the year, so the celebrations will probably be delayed until then.’’ Worth celebrating: Bachelor of Com- merce Accounting Rochelle Harrison is congratulated by Peter Macintyre.
