Chief Ed Holmes said that in his experience, there is not a connection between solici-tors and burglaries.

“Only one time in the last 10 years did we find a con-nection between a solicitor and a crime,” he said.

“It is possible,” he said, “but we do not see it.”

But Holmes acknowledges that more aggressive solici-tors seem to be appearing on the Island.

“From January to May of this year, we have had 59 calls from people who were uncomfortable with the peo-ple who came to their door,” he said.

The city does have a law on the books regarding solicitors that was passed in 1994. But the city does not enforce it.

“It is a problem for us,” he said. There are constitutional issues regarding freedom of speech.

Holmes was referring to a lawsuit over an ordinance to regulate solicitors in the

city of Medina. The law was struck down by the court as unconstitutional.

City Attorney Katie Knight agreed. Laws that require solicitors to register or get a license first repre-sent a prior restraint on free speech, she explained.

Despite problems with the existing ordinance, City Council members wanted to offer some assurance to citi-zens about the people who come to their door unin-vited.

Ideas discussed during the Council study session on Aug. 12 included having solicitors register at the city or to have photo ID.

City Manager Rich Conrad said he has had many people come to his door.

He said it is important for people who answer the door to know who they are talk-ing to.

“If I can’t figure out who they are, that is a problem,” he said.

The Council also dis-cussed setting hours when solicitation would be allowed or whether or not any new ordinance would invite a lawsuit.

Other issues with a solicitors ordinance is what exemptions would be made. Examples would be Boy and Girls Scouts or neighbor-hood kids selling items for school fundraisers. But how to choose or describe those exemptions would be diffi-cult.

Despite the many issues with enforcement or con-stitutionality, deputy mayor Dan Grausz wanted to refo-cus on the problem.

“What are we trying to accomplish here?” he asked.

“[People] fear that people who are coming to their homes are casing their homes,” he said. “If an ordi-nance does not do that, then we are wasting our time.”

Both Holmes and Knight said that the best and most immediate protection for homeowners would be to post a ‘No Trespassing’ sign or a ‘No Solicitors’ sign on

their door. “It is the most effec-

tive way to deal with this,” Knight said.

It sends a clear message. “If you are told to leave,

then you cannot be here, and do not come back,” she said.

Trespassing is already a crime under Chapter 9.14 MICC. If a homeowner posts a ‘No Soliciting’ or ‘No Trespassing’ sign, or actu-ally communicates to the solicitor that the homeown-er desires that the solicitor leave, and such a sign or actual communication is ignored, a trespass has argu-ably occurred.

Islander Larry McWilliams told the Council that he does not mind the tree-trimmers or the neighbor kids coming to his home, but “we need to be able to identify these people.”

“Please get serious about this,” he told the Council.

King County law on solicitors

Two years ago, the King County Council took steps to regulate solicitors in unincorporated areas with a new regulation.

The regulation prohibits commercial solicitors from contacting residents who have posted ‘No Tres-passing’ or ‘No Soliciting’

signage on their property. Similar regulations al-

ready are in place in many King County cities. Resi-dents, they said, wanted protection from what they described as “aggressive solicitors such as maga-zine salesmen who harass neighbors and perpetrate scams.”

The restriction on solicitation does not apply

to political, religious or charitable activities by nonprofit organizations such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, in order to avoid any conflict with First Amendment rights to free speech.

Solicitors who ignore signage and try to contact a resident anyway face a civil infraction with a fine of $100.

Firefighters from around the region partici-pated in rescue drills at the East Channel Bridge and the Mercer Island boat launch last week. The training ended on Monday.

Mercer Island fire per-sonnel joined a host of fire departments in the East

Metro Training Group — including Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond and Northshore — for the training, focusing on confined space and rope rescue scenarios that involved live patients.

The East Metro group consists of more than 500 firefighters. Seven days of training are held, with an estimated 80 to 90 fire-fighters per day, 30 appa-ratus and 9 units per ses-sion.

The U.S. Department of Education extended Washington state’s waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) — also known as ‘No Child Left Behind’ in recent years — for the upcoming school year.

The waiver helps the state avoid penalties under the ESEA as Washington state tries to implement three reforms that were part of its original waiver plan. Those reforms include:

• College and career-ready expectations for all students;

• State-developed recog-nition and accountability support system; and

• Teacher/principal evalu-ations.

The Department of Education termed this year’s extension “high risk” due to issues with specific wording in Washington state Senate Bill 5895. Washington state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn’s office said part of that bill reads, “Student growth data … must be based on multiple measures that can include classroom-based, school-based, district-based and state-based tools.”

The department objected to the use of the word ‘can,’ saying that Washington state’s “interpretation of

including student growth as a significant factor in edu-cator evaluation systems is inconsistent with the ESEA definition.”

Dorn said he saw this objection coming.

“When the Legislature was debating 5895, I said that the language didn’t go far enough,” he said. “The Department of Education agrees with me. Now the Legislature has the next ses-sion to strengthen the law.”

Mercer Island School District Superintendent Gary Plano is chagrined.

“I was disappointed to learn that the Washington Legislature did not address the federal requirements under NCLB and instead allowed local school districts to determine what student measures should be tied to teachers’ performance,” he said. “A persistent pattern seems to repeat itself from Olympia, and it’s the ‘pass the buck’ mentality.”

Plano warned “that if the 2014 Legislature does not address this requirement to the satisfaction of Education Secretary Duncan’s require-ments, the Mercer Island School District stands to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal aid.”

The Federal Way Mirror is a sister publication of the Mercer Island Reporter. Mary L. Grady contributed to this story.

off issues that matter to him and the 41st Democrats. The first matter is edu-cation to be fully funded from pre-kindergarten on; affordable higher educa-tion, the environment and sustainability. He wants to help ensure that there will be mean-i n g f u l gun con-trol, and p a s s a g e of the t r a n s -portation f u n d i ng l e g i s l a -tion. He is opposed to tolling I-90, but said we need to find a way to pay for mainte-nance of the state’s high-ways.

Ellis is the grandson of Jim Ellis, now 92, the activist and visionary who led campaigns to clean up Lake Washington in the 1950s; finance mass transit, parks, pools and other public facilities through ‘Forward Thrust’ bonds in the 1960s; to preserve farmlands in the 1970s; to build and later expand the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in the 1980s, and to establish the Mountains to Sound Greenway in the

1990s. It is big shoes to fill, his

grandson admitted. But his family’s involvement in the community was a forma-tive part of his upbringing.

“It is what I know,” he said.

Ellis, who has a polished speaking voice, started his own company ear-lier this year, David Ellis Voiceovers, to provide voiceover services to com-mercial entities. But since the news of Maxwell’s res-ignation, he has been using his voice to promote his candidacy for her seat.

Tana SennMercer Island City

Councilmember Tana Senn was one of the first people who Marcie Maxwell told that she was resigning her seat in the Legislature to take a posi-tion in Gov. Jay Inslee’s government. Later, Inslee himself called Senn to urge her to put her name in for her replacement. The first thing she thought, she said, was that she could not tell her parents the news.

“I was sad,” she remem-bered. “They are both gone now.”

Next, she thought of her children; one in elemen-tary school and the other

just starting middle school. “I thought, I cannot do

this because of them,” she said. Then, “I thought, wait — I have to do this because of my kids.”

Senn, concerned about education funding, and safety issues for children, sees her young family as an asset to state government. She noted that there are just a handful of legisla-tors with young children in Olympia.

Hearing about Maxwell’s plans was a big surprise, she said. “Honestly, I love local gov-ernment, but there are things you cannot do at the city level like passing a trans-portation budget or improving gun control.

“It would be exciting to work on larger issues,” she said. She sees her pos-sible appointment to the Legislature, “not as ‘a leav-ing,’ but as a different way to serve Islanders.”

Senn, who has not been active in the 41st District Democrats, said she attended her first meeting last month after she heard about the appointment and was elected that evening,

as a PCO. Attending the meeting with her were six other Islanders who were also voted in as PCOs.

Senn joined the Mercer Island City Council in January 2012 when she was appointed to fill the remaining term of for-mer Island mayor, Jim Pearman. She is running unopposed for her City Council seat, up for reelec-tion in November.

Announcing her can-didacy to retain her City Council seat last March, she told Islanders, “I am working hard to fight toll-

ing on I-90 at the local, state and federal levels. At the same time, I’m focused on the day-to-day issues that make our Island a wonderful place to live — parks and open spaces, safe roads and side-walks, a vibrant

Town Center and quality education.”

Senn said that she expects to remain on the City Council even if she is appointed to the year-long position.

Senn has a background in communications and government relations. Senn earned a Master in Public Policy and Administration from Columbia University.

Senn’s volunteer involve-ment includes campaign-ing for the fire station and rescue truck levy cam-paign, Youth and Family Services, and the PTA at Island Park Elementary. She was on the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle for six

years.

George PieperBusiness owner and

civil rights activist, George Pieper has been an active member of the 41st Democrats for 11 years. He acknowledges up front what the intent is of the replacement process for Maxwell’s seat in Olympia.

“For the 41st, the goal is to keep the seat Democratic — now and later,” he said.

Pieper himself has been active in the Democratic Party for more than 22 years, first in the 36th Legislative District and later the 41st. His application states that he has been involved in and led many party activities, including presid-ing over the state-wide Washington S t o n e w a l l Democrats and the LGBT Caucus. He has been a member of the 41st District Democrats for 11 years, served as an act-ing Precinct Committee Officer (PCO), and then as an elected PCO in his precinct since 2008.

Born in California, Pieper, 42, came to Seattle as a young man. He put himself through college in Seattle. He is now a 17-year resident of Bellevue.

“This is my chosen home,” he said.

He has an Island address for his business, OutSmart Office Solutions.

Pieper describes himself as a community leader, civil rights advocate, and

business pioneer. He is the former vice president of the Greater Seattle Business Association, where he served on the board for eight years. For the last five years, he has served as the 6th District Commissioner on the King County Civil Rights Commission, and as the chair for two years. In 2012, Pieper was hon-ored at the GSBA Business & Humanitarian Awards Dinner as the recipient of the President’s Award for Community Leadership.

He has put his name in the statehouse hat once before, for the appoint-

ment to fill Fred Jarrett’s Senate seat when the Islander decided to join the King County Council staff in January 2010, after being elected a few months earlier. Randy Gordon was appoint-

ed instead. He was later defeated by Islander Steve Litzow in the November general election for the seat.

Pieper said he is well connected and knows how to raise money. He is a pro-lific fundraiser for a range of organizations from KCTS9 to groups within the (LGBT) community.

“I have been fundraising forever,” he said.

For more than 20 years he worked as an advocate for the environment, social justice, economic and LGBT equality issues.

Along with tackling the issues of education and transportation, Pieper says if he were appointed, he hopes to be able to launch a campaign finance effort.

Other candidatesThe two other candi-

dates for the open King County Council position are from Sammamish. They include Don Gerund, a former Boeing scien-tist and a 14-year mem-ber of the City Council there. Also, Seattle attor-ney, Greg Hoover who practices immigration law, civil matters, arbitration and mediation, has put his name forward.

To read about the candi-dates from Sammamish, go to our website at www.mi-reporter.com. Results from the vote will be posted on Wednesday.

EIS will not prevent tolls on Interstate 90

Mercer Island officials are mak-ing a mistake if they think an EIS will prevent the Legislature from imposing I-90 tolls to help fund 520 bridge construction. The WSDOT and legislators can easily argue that the benefits from reduced I-90 congestion from imposing the tolls outweighs the increased congestion from those opting to go around the lake to avoid tolls.

Of course, if Sound Transit were really interested in reducing I-90 congestion, they could have added the fourth lanes to the outer road-ways 15 years ago. Instead, they have delayed that action until 2016 to avoid any suggestion that they initiate BRT on the center roadways; knowing that doing so would have ended cross-lake light rail forever.

The impact of the I-90 tolls that Mercer Island commuters will likely have to pay is dwarfed by their loss of center bridge access from East Link. Sound Transit’s own studies show that adding the fourth lane to the outer roadway will not make up for the loss of the center roadway.

Mercer Island officials could stop both the tolls and the increased I-90 congestion by speaking out about stopping East Link. The $200 mil-lion Sound Transit will probably “invest” next year could be diverted to eliminate the tolls on both bridg-es, add the fourth lane to the outer roadways, and to initiate BRT ser-vice on the center roadway.

Mercer Island commuters and the entire Eastside could benefit.

YTN produces plays as well as role models

My name is Madeline Dalton. I’m 14 years old, and I’m a student at Youth Theatre Northwest (YTN). I played the part of Princess Fiona in our production of “Shrek: the Musical,” and I wanted to share some things with you about my experience in the show.

The process of putting a show together is one of the greatest things in the world. I got to meet a cast of

kids who I, for once, didn’t know. The vast majority of the kids were new to YTN, and the older kids in the cast (like me) had to show them what being in a show was all about. On the first day of rehearsal, a lot of them were confused and scared. Now, they’ve grown into little actors and actresses who put 100 percent into every performance.

Not only did I get to watch the younger cast members blossom, but I had an amazing time working with my older cast mates. We’ve all been at the theatre for a long time and have developed good instincts on stage, so the directors had the time to really help us delve into our characters. Shrek tells Donkey about how ogres are like onions — they have layers, and Kate Swenson (our director) helped all of the leading characters discover how they are like onions, too.

After all of our hard work, we had opening night. When you step out onto that stage, you get this adrenaline rush that just can’t be

H ere’s the situation. A rash of burglaries coincid-ing somewhat with good weather and a surge of door-to-door solicitors has Islanders on edge. Many

are hoping for an ordinance to limit or control solicitors on the Island. Such a law, they say, would bring a better sense of security to the Island

Would it? Hard to say. Some have suggested that solici-tors register at City Hall and carry some sort of license or photo ID. But, it seems that many who wish to flaunt the law anyway would not bother to comply. How could they even be informed? Even if they are, they could simply pro-fess ignorance. And having to check in with the city may or may not deter solicitors from being aggressive, rude or scary.

Police say burglaries are not related to solicitors. Chief Holmes says that only one burglary in the past 10 years has been traced to a person posing as a solicitor. Nearly all burglaries, police say, are crimes of opportu-nity. Those who break into

homes look for the easy way — eyeballing if people are at home or not, then checking for unlocked doors. Criminals are looking for loot, not confrontation.

A new ordinance with any teeth will invite scrutiny by those who insist that it is a limit on the constitutional right of free speech. Such a law could invite potential lawsuits — costing our city time and money. A discussion about whether an ordinance might pass muster this time in terms of its constitutionality due to the possibility of different judges is simply conjecture. Again, how much city money would it take to find the answer to that question?

Placing a ‘No Solicitors’ sign is certainly the easiest and most expeditious way to send unwanted people away before they get to your front door. If a person does knock anyway or act suspicious, don’t answer the door, and call police. With or without a sign, police say to call them if you feel threatened or uncomfortable with a situation.

No one wants to post such a sign. No one wants to lock their doors just to run to the grocery or pick up the kids from soccer. No one wants to look over their shoulder. But those simple steps can stop a bad situation from happen-ing before it even starts.

A sign or a law?

‘Police say that solicitors are not related to crime activity.’

This time of year is one of transition; back to school, the sun is setting a little ear-lier and rising a little later.

For some of us, the Jewish High Holy days are looming very close. They arrive at a per-fect time — in the midst of all of these changes. It is now that we take account of what is truly important and make adjust-ments accordingly.

Part of our liturgy is dedi-cated to reminding ourselves of our commitment to pass our traditions and beliefs from generation to genera-tion. Our lives are centered around family and commu-nity, and building memories and traditions. Part of our mission as parents, grand-parents and educators is to improve the lot of the next generation.

Though we all take this mission very seriously, I am concerned that we are ham-pered in our efforts without even knowing it.

Of late, I have come to learn that many of our chil-dren’s products contain toxic flame retardants. Those very

products could very well be making them sick.

Many of you may remem-ber, way back in the ’70s, the health concerns about cer-tain cancer-causing flame retardants in children’s paja-

mas. Manufacturers removed them from the pajamas, but those flame retardants, known as chlorinated TRIS, are still used in baby and children’s products from stroll-ers and car seats to nap mats, as well as sofas and chairs.

Un f o r t u n a t e l y, cancer-causing TRIS flame retardants became popular again when Washington and other states banned the neurotoxic flame retardants called PBDES. Companies just moved from one harm-ful chemical to another without regard for our chil-dren’s health.

Shockingly, a recent study found toxic flame retar-dants in 17 of 20 children’s products tested, includ-ing nursing pillows and changing pads purchased at Washington retailers, such as Walmart and Target. When the toxics escape, they mix with household dust and are ingested by our children as they explore the world around them. As

a result, our little ones are exposed to cancer-caus-ing agents and neurotoxic chemicals while they sleep, play and eat.

There are safer ways to achieve fire-safe products. Inherently flame resistant materials, smarter meth-ods and safer chemicals are available and used by numerous companies.

“Why isn’t using harm-ful flame retardants against the law?” you may wonder. That’s a great question.

The Toxic-Free Kids & Families Act will ban the most harmful flame retar-dants and help prevent companies from switching to yet another bad alterna-tive. Washington’s House of Representatives passed it last year, but the Senate failed to pass anything meaningful, leaving us all vulnerable for another year.

As we take stock of where we are and where we want to be this High Holiday sea-son, please remember that we are all responsible for each other. Members of our Legislature come from our communities and it is our obligation to help them take stock and be accountable to us all.

Norman “Wally” ZirbelNovember 15, 1918 – August 5, 2013

Norman “Wally Zirbel” passed away in Tucson, Arizona on August 5, 2013 after a brief illness. He was 94.

Wally and his late wife, Rosemary, were 30-year residents of Mercer Island. It is where they raised their three children. In 1985, they relocated to Tucson but always maintained lifelong friendships with his island and Seattle area friends and former work colleagues.

Born in Detroit, MI, he settled on the west coast following a WWII posting in the Pacific where he was a Captain in the U.S. Army. He joined Pacific Northwest Bell where he worked for 40 years as an executive before retiring. In work and in life, he was known for his impeccable integrity, kindness, character and selfless devotion to his family.

Following the death of his wife, he married for a second time at 90 to Jean Detels, until her death in 2012. He led a happy and vital life taking excellent care of his health which allowed him to remain independent and happy up till the end.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie, Tucson; son Tom, Phoenix, son Curtis, Woodinville; sister Lenore, East Tawas, MI; three

grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.858464

Pauline Reed of Mercer Island passed away Sunday, August 4th, after an 18-month battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A fourth generation Alaskan and proud of it, Pauline was a small town girl from Anchorage born in 1942 in the territory of Alaska. She was the daughter of Alaskan pioneers Frank and Maxine Reed, and a woman who possessed a true pioneering spirit. She was the first Alaskan to attend Wellesley College outside Boston, followed by UC Berkeley. She broke down many boundaries during her life because of her fierce determination and positive attitude together with her remarkable ability to turn obstacles into opportunities. Pauline lived her 70 years with an incredible strength of character.

Pauline was so many things to so many people. She was, above all else, an unconditionally loving and supportive mother and grandmother. Though at times a crazy and embarrassing mother for her children, she was always unfailingly generous with her time and encouragement. She was always ready to do anything to help her children pursue their dreams. Pauline felt that the hardest part of her ALS diagnosis was that she would not be able to watch her grandchildren become adults, and would miss meeting her future great-grandchildren.

Pauline met her former husband, Don, an airline pilot in Alaska, while taking flight lessons. After earning her pilot’s license, she and Don would perform unexpected stunts such as buzzing her in-laws house-party while flying upside-down in an open cockpit bi-plane. Pauline also learned to pilot hot air balloons with her brother, Frank Jr., and enjoyed scuba diving with her friends from the Mercer Island Police Department.

Pauline was a social activist, accomplishing things most mothers and women of her time did not do: In 1973, fulfilling one childhood dream, she became King County’s first female fire fighter.

Pauline was a State Farm Insurance Agent for 30 years with her office on Mercer Island. She was known to her clients as the “go to” person when any home, car or other insurance issue would arise. She was always ready and willing to fight the bureaucracy in her client’s behalf.

Pauline wanted to keep her children too busy to get into mischief so she insisted they have a sport for every season. As part of this plan she spent 30 years as a ski patroller at Ski Acres and Alpental (every weekend come snow or rain). She became a National Patroller and was the first in the family to try snowboarding! In her extra time, she became an Emergency Medical Technician, a member of the Cascade Mountain

Rescue team (looking for people lost in the mountains and

setting explosives to cause controlled avalanches) and also joined the Mercer Island Public Safety Department Dive Team that was responsible for retrieving cars that flipped over the I-90 bridge into Lake Washington. She was definitely everyone’s favorite at “bring your parent to school” day.

She volunteered each summer at countless swim meets and hauled boats each fall to her children’s crew regattas. And she did not stop there. She believed education was all-important both inside and outside the classroom so she hauled her family around the globe and to rural parts of the USA, usually with backpacks, tents, and Youth Hostel cards. Itineraries were always loose and money often limited, which led to unexpected surprises like camping on park benches at Greek Police stations, sleeping in roadside fields or beaches, and leaving a lifetime of incredible memories. A few of her favorites included Denny Creek, Russia (while it was still the USSR), East Berlin (living out Glasnost by hat-trading with Soviet soldiers while camping on the shore of Lake Baikal, just north of Mongolia), Idaho’s Snake River, Ross Lake, the Greek islands, and Mount McKinley National Park (where she woke up the entire campground at 5 AM because the clouds had finally parted to display the sunrise over North America’s tallest mountain).

Pauline was an adoring grandmother and a friend and neighbor to many. She approached life with a simple and powerful philosophy: “One must NEVER put off the important moments, because they might not happen again. So pause to take time, even if it is inconvenient, to be with those you love, and make memories that last, for they are, what in life, can never be taken away.” Her presence will be missed greatly, but the wonderful memories she made while she was here will be forever cherished by her children, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends.

Pauline is survived by her three children, Shelley Elizabeth Reed Buhler (Frank), D. Scott Reed Mackay (of Sydney Australia), and Carrie Reed Scull (Grant), four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephanos Buhler, Samantha and Sophia Scull, and former husband Donald Mackay.  Her greatest joys in her life were her grandchildren who have said, “our biggest fan is gone and we will miss her.”

A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held at a later date. Please consider one of the following charities if you wish to make a donation in her name:

interested in public ser-vice and raising commu-nity awareness and involve-ment in civil rights issues are invited to apply for one of three positions on the King County Civil Rights Commission. If selected and confirmed by the King County Council, commis-sioners serve three-year terms.

The Civil Rights Commission is soliciting applications from indi-viduals in County Council District 1, District 2 and District 6, which includes Mercer Island.

The commission advises the county executive and County Council on mat-ters related to the county’s civil rights programs, and human and civil rights issues. This includes review-ing and reporting on the effectiveness and progress of the county’s affirmative action, non-discrimination enforcement, and minor-ity/women business utiliza-tion programs, as well as educating the community about preventing and elimi-nating discrimination. In addition, the commission works to educate the com-munity about the county’s Equity and Social Justice Ordinance.

Commission members must live in King County. If confirmed, commis-sioners serve without pay. Residents from diverse eth-

Potential candidates should have interests and experience related to the goals of the commission, live in the appropriate County Council district, and be able to commit eight to 10 hours monthly to commission meetings and work projects. This includes attending month-ly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m., and partic-ipating in committee work, which can require addition-al meetings.

Senior Foundation night at Island Books is Aug. 22

The Senior Foundation of Mercer Island will host its 10th annual Island Books night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22.

This year’s theme is “Sneak Preview,” featuring a special look at the soon-to-be published “Mercer Island History: From Haunted Wilderness To Coveted Community” book. Author Jane Meyer Brahm will be on hand for a special video presentation about the his-tory of Mercer Island, fol-lowed by a question and answer session.

Stop by the store and men-tion the Senior Foundation and 20 percent of the sales from the day will go back to the foundation.

At 8 p.m. on Aug. 22, there will be a raffle ticket drawing for six tickets to the Great Wheel in Seattle, as well as drawings for a copy of Brahm’s new history book and two bottles of wine. Tickets for the raffle are $5

each and can be purchased from any Senior Foundation board member. Winners do not need to be present to win.

Jamerson receives Congressional award

Mercer Island resident Isabel Jamerson, a senior at The Bush School, recently received the Congressional Award Silver Medal from Congressman Dave Reichert, R-WA, 8th District.

For the past four years, Jamerson has spent over 750 hours in volunteer commu-nity service, personal devel-opment and physical fitness. Her community service has been primarily focused on gleaning donated produce from the Mercer Island Farmers Market for MIYFS Food Bank, and serving weekly at the Cherry Street NW Harvest Food Bank.

This award represents Congress’ highest award for young people, and was established in 1979 by the Congressional Award Act.

Thrift Shop open house is Aug. 28

The Mercer Island Thrift Shop will host an open house in August about the proposed expansion of the store.

The first meeting will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the Thrift Shop. The meetings will include a brief presentation.

City staff is hoping to gather input on the pro-posed remodel changes to the current Thrift Shop building. The remodelling goals include: reducing con-stricted traffic flow on S.E. 34th Street, increasing park-ing for people using the park and Thrift Shop customers, while also reducing street congestion, creating a sepa-

rate donation drop-off zone, improving the storefront appearance and increas-ing revenues that help fund MIYFS counseling services.

Anyone with questions can contact MIYFS Director Cindy Goodwin at [email protected].

City roadwork to continue through September

City road crews are nearly finished with two significant summer street projects: chip sealing and asphalt overlays for various arterial and resi-dential roadways.

Work on streets in the Parkwood neighborhood are finished with just some work left to ‘raise’ manhole covers and other utilities to the new surface.

The chip sealing work is nearly complete on Mercerwood Drive and streets around Homestead Fields. Just striping remains on those streets.

For all construction activ-ities, residents should expect flaggers, alternating lane clo-sures and minor detours.

In late September, crews will re-surface a portion of

West Mercer Way between S.E. 24th and 28th Street and a block of 80th Avenue S.E. in front of the car wash in the Town Center. For proj-ect maps and updates, go to www.mercergov.org.

Community Center parking lot to be resurfaced

The Mercer Island Community and Event Center’s parking lot will be undergoing repair and maintenance work from Aug. 26 through Aug. 30. The large, 222-space parking lot will be receiving a seal coat and striping during this time. To minimize incon-venience to the public, the project will be completed in three phases, keeping a por-tion of the lot available for use at all times. However, less parking will be available during the project.

The starting date of this project is contingent upon weather and is subject to change.

The Mercer Island Community and Event Center is located at 8236 S.E. 24th Street on Mercer Island.

When her mother-in-law suggested three years ago that she could be the prin-cipal at St. Monica School, Anca Wilson didn’t give it much thought. But one day, the passing remark would come true.

Wilson is replacing long-time principal Pam Dellino, who has retired after leading the school for 14 years.

When asked what brought her to St. Monica, Wilson attributed this new opportu-nity to God.

“To me, it was meant to be,” said Wilson, a West Seattle resident who was born in R o m a n i a and came to America at age 17.

W i l s o n left Romania in the mid-1980s with her mother and older sister three years after her father, Viorel Lupsa, fled the country, which was then under com-munist rule. He received political asylum in the for-mer Yugoslavia and was placed in a refugee camp in Belgrade.

Religious persecution and inherent communist oppression had become a double burden on the fam-ily, Wilson said. As the son of an orthodox priest, Lupsa had been especially targeted.

Wilson remembers being stalked by police in high school, and days before her

departure with her mother and sister, their Bucharest hotel room was broken into — most likely, for their pass-ports.

“That made me all the more thankful for what I have, for being in the U.S., appreciating what this coun-try has to offer … and espe-cially, religious freedom,” Wilson said. “I try to keep it in perspective every day — the great blessing this coun-try is to my family.”

The family was reunited in the United States, where Lupsa had been granted a sponsor after interviewing with an American consul. Under President Ronald Reagan’s ‘Most Favored Nation’ clause, one stipula-tion was that the Romanian government would permit families to reunite in the U.S.

“Thanks to President Reagan, and God, I am here,” Wilson said.

The family’s sponsor resid-ed in Burien, Wash., and from there the family moved to the Eastside, and then to Seattle.

“I didn’t speak English,

but I was determined to succeed,” Wilson said. She had begun French studies in Romania. Now, in addi-tion to her native language and English, she is fluent in French and is learning Spanish.

Wilson’s mother, Lucia, who had been a school prin-cipal in Romania, opened a day care, where Wilson got to help with children of all ages. The day care became Wilson’s inspiration to pur-sue a teaching career.

“I was looking for some-thing more fulfilling than classical music perfor-

mance,” said Wilson, who studied classical music at Cornish School of the Arts, where she met her hus-band, Brian. Still, music has brought her great joy, she said. Flute is her primary instrument, and she also plays piano and sings.

After completing a mas-ter in teaching program at

Seattle University and sub-stitute teaching for a year, Wilson settled on the Holy Family Parish School, where she taught pre-K, fourth and fifth grade, and became the vice principal and music specialist. She also holds a master of science in educa-tional administration from National University in La

Jolla, Calif. Wilson married her hus-

band, Brian, in the Mercer Island United Methodist Church, and they had their marriage “blessed” in a Catholic parish. Brian is a Protestant, but the couple attends worship services together.

“We have a lot of con-nection with the Island and a lot of time invested here,” Wilson said.

Brian graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1982, and he grew up in the house that his parents built on Mercer Island in 1960. His mother, Bonnie, sold the house three years ago before moving into Island House.

“Mercer Island is like a second home because of my mother-in-law,” Wilson said. “We spent a great deal of time here.”

Bonnie died in December, but now through St. Monica the family’s Island ties remain.

Wilson’s daughter, Julia, is entering seventh grade at St. Monica this fall. She chose to play flute — following in her mother’s footsteps — and will be in band.

Enrollment at St. Monica is at 200 students, down from last year. Catholic schools’ enrollment is declining nationwide, Wilson said.

“More than anything else, Catholic schools’ greatest

“Sixty percent of the students (now) come from off-Island.”

By the first home football game in mid-September, there will be a new conces-sion stand and press box at Mercer Island High School.

The district, which has been working on the project this summer, expects con-struction to be done by the first home game.

As of early August, the framing of the project was complete, a process that took about two weeks, said Tony Kuhn, the Director of Maintenance & Operations for the district. Prior to that, crews poured concrete for the foundation of the new building.

The project was approved earlier this spring by the MISD board of directors, and started at the end of July.

The old press box is still standing, and Kuhn said it will stay put until the new building is officially ready

to go for the first game. The space where the old build-ing is will be converted into special dedicated handicap seating, something the sta-dium didn’t have before.

The new building is two stories — the bottom for concessions and the top

for the press box. The old concessions stand area will be converted to larger rest-rooms. Upstairs will have rooms for the coaching staff, videographers, and the high school radio station, along with the announcers and scorekeepers who had spots

in the old building.Kuhn said most of

the work is being done in-house by the district, which saves them a lot of money on construction costs.

The first home football game of the season, which is also Homecoming, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, against Lake Washington.

For the fifth year, Mercer Island will be the host of the Seattle area’s Swim Across America event on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The event, which raises money for cancer research by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, features a swim from the Mercerwood Shore Club to Luther Burbank Park.

Swimmers can choose between the two-mile swim that starts at the Shore Club, or the half-mile swim that takes place at the park. The Kids Splash will take place after both longer swims fin-ish.

Scott Whelan, a Mercer Island resident and co-chair of the event, said there are only a few small changes this year, mostly because they haven’t felt the need to mess with what has been a great event.

“The course is awesome in our minds,” said Whelan. “We think it’s the perfect community to run the event and the perfect location for it. A lot of other places

throughout the nation that do this have taken bits and pieces that we do because of the venue and the event has been so great. It’s our fifth year, and we didn’t want to move it because we still feel it’s the ideal location.”

This year the after-party at Luther Burbank will feature a catered breakfast and band, along with visits by local Olympians Ariana Kukors, Mary Wayte Bradburn, Rick Colella, Emily Silver, Dana Kirk and Margaret Hoelzer.

“We have some different Olympians coming and we’re going to have a band this year,” said Whelan. “They are all cancer survivors and were treated at SCCA; many of them for the very things we’re trying to raise money for.”

The event, still a few weeks away, already has a lot of par-ticipants signed up.

“There is a lot of growth,” said Whelan. So far, Whelan said, 260 swimmers are reg-istered and they are easily on pace to hit the $300,000 fundraising goal.

The registration fee is $50 for each adult swimmer, which applies to the mini-mum fundraising require-ment of $300. Participants can form teams in honor of someone who is bat-tling cancer or died from the disease. Last year, the open water swim in Lake Washington had 303 swim-mers participate, with 165 volunteers, which helped to raise more than $235,000.

The SCCA brings togeth-er cancer-care programs from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s. Money from this year’s Swim Across American event will sup-port research and treatment for patients with pancreatic cancer, along with research into the Cellular Therapy Laboratory.

To register or learn more about the event, visit www.swimacrossamerica.org.

explained. For the first time, audiences are laughing at our jokes. They even laugh at things that you don’t expect them to laugh at. Knowing that all of our hard work has paid off is just so satisfying.

Being in “Shrek” was such an important experience for me. Every time I do a show at YTN, it strengthens my bond with the YTN community. My friend-ships become better, and my passion for per-forming grows stronger. Also, I learned a lot as an actress. “Shrek” is written in such a way that the leads and ensemble members generally don’t work together on stage all that much. When I was just working with my fellow co-stars, I was able to develop my advanced acting abili-ties, which will help me if I pursue a career in theater (which I

hope to do). In the rare moments that I get to perform on stage with the ensemble, I get to

be a role model for the younger kids, and that’s an important life skill for me to learn. I inter-act with the younger actors a lot backstage, and I have met some of the sweetest kids ever through this backstage bonding. I remember thinking that the older kids in my first show (“Oliver!”) were super cool and that I wanted to be like them. Now that I am one of the older kids, I hope the younger actors will look up to me.

Hopefully this let-ter has shown you and the Mercer Island community just how important Youth Theatre Northwest can be to kids of all ages. There’s some-thing for everyone to learn at YTN, whether it’s about theater or about life.

I hope that the community will sup-port Youth Theatre Northwest so that it can live on for future gen-erations of YTN kids.

challenge is the increasing secularism of our society,” Wilson said.

With the coming school year quickly approaching, Wilson is most looking forward to getting to know the children.

Sixty percent of St. Monica students come from off-Island. That was not the case 20 years ago, when the majority of stu-dents were Islanders.

“The most exciting part is to be with them, see them in action, see teach-ers in action,” Wilson said. “We have a great, hard-working, talented staff.”

The school employs 18

teachers. With aids and other support, St. Monica has a total of 29 staff mem-bers.

“I’m very blessed to be here. It’s such an honor to be present, to serve the St. Monica community and also to serve Mercer Island. I believe that this community brings a great service to the Island and not just the Catholic com-munity, but all who come to our doors,” Wilson said. “St. Monica is a big part of the history of the Island. I intend to continue to build on the work that was done here by my predecessor.”
