Will you be able to keep it under control as you descend steep, off-road tracks?If the surface is unfavourable? If the gradientis as much as 100%? Might you not be in fora free-fall descent under these conditions? There’s no need to worry: in the new M-Class you can enjoy the ride all the way down again,

too. Thanks to the patented Downhill Speed Regulation system, you can set a constant, pleasantly slow ground speed even when negotiating steep downhill stretches and difficult terrain. The cruise control lever allows the speed to be adjusted at any time. So you can always count on a safe, gentle and relaxing descent – almost as if you were floating back down under a parachute.

A welcome alternative to free-fall driving

Five centimetres of steel can have a remarkable effect. The five centimetres in question belong to the wedge-pin door lock, which has saved the lives of countless drivers and passengers around the world since it was patented in July 1958. By preventing the doors from bursting openin an accident this innovative design featuringa metal wedge pin and two safety detents stopped the occupants from being thrown out of the vehicle, previously a common and disastrous consequence of even relatively harmless collisions. But the wedge-pin door lock did more than just increase the stability of the occupant compartment: it also reduced the risk of the

doors being jammed, thereby simplifying thetask facing the rescuers to such a degree that lives were saved in many cases. Today, the enhanced version of the wedge-pin door lock remains the benchmark for car door safety.In fact, the wedge-pin door lock is a perfect example of how, thanks to their great attentionto detail, perseverance and willingness tothink outside the box, Mercedes-Benz safety researchers regularly come up with unexpected and exciting solutions. Mercedes-Benz is quicker at getting future technologies to where it matters most: on the road. By the end of 2012, you will have more than 140 Mercedes-Benz models with BlueEFFICIENCY technologies at your disposal, all of which help you reduce your impact onthe environment. Our BlueEFFICIENCY concept comprises innovations for efficient mobilityas well as optimised processes all the way along the value chain.

The BlueEFFICIENCY measures – the Mercedes-Benz efficiency package. This package consists of comprehensive vehicle optimisations which ease the burden on the environment. Each model combines the most efficient engine with intelligent, latest-generation aero-dynamic and energy-management measures. Such measures include the ECO start/stop function, which is being made available foran increasing number of models.

When we develop a new model, responsibility for the environment plays a crucial role. People’s awareness is increasing as emissions, fuel consumption and fuel prices become topics that affect us all. It is therefore only natural that the new M-Class models should also be BlueEFFICIENCY models. Measured against

comparable predecessor models, the new engine range for the new M-Class offers an increase in performance of up to 23% with a simultaneous reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of up to 28%. Confirmation of the environmental compatibility of the new M-Class, all the way from the production stage,

through use and on to re-cycling, is providedby the international environmental certificate “Design for Environment” (ISO/TR 14062). BlueEFFICIENCY comprises a whole packageof specific measures:

Diesel engines

Cleaner, more powerful and more economical: the new M-Class features the latest BlueEFFICIENCY diesel technology from Mercedes-Benz. Powerful and quiet, the engines also impress with their optimised emission and fuel-consumption figures,thanks to which they comply with the Bharat Stage IV equivalent emission norms.

The ML 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC impresses with effortlessly superior pulling power in every driving situation

V6 engine. The ML 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC also puts the emphasis on efficiency. Uprated and optimised for reduced fuel consumption, the V6 diesel engine develops 190kW/258hp. Precise and fast piezo injectors, a high injection pressure between 1600-2400, and an optimised turbo-charger combine to produce an immense peak torque of 619 Nm. This translates into effortlessly superior pulling power in all driving situations accompanied

by a reduced environmental impact and lower fuel consumption. The figures bring home the benefits: compared with the nearest equivalent predecessor model, output is up to 23% higher while fuel consumption is reduced by as much as 22%. Furthermore, this engine has excellent quiet-running characteristics. The ECO start/stop function ensures that the engine is switched off temporarily when the vehicle is stationary.

Transmission

Whether you favour an economical or a sporty driving style – the 7G-TRONIC PLUS is ideally matched to every engineand continuously adjusts to the current driving situation and driving style. What’s more, it is intuitive and ergonomic to use.

7G-TRONIC PLUS. The new M-Class is fittedas standard with the enhanced 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission and the DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering column. Seven forward gears allow optimum revs atall times, thus reducing fuel consumption.In city traffic especially, the 7-speed automatic transmission brings about a further reduction in fuel consumption thanks to the ECO start/stop function which stops the engine automatically when the vehicle comes to a halt. The further improved electrohydraulic control unit, together with optimised engine and transmission software, results in more dynamic gear changes and even greater shift quality. What’s more, the vehicle responds more directly to the driver’s use of the accelerator pedal.

DIRECT SELECT. Ergonomically designedand intuitive to operate, the DIRECT SELECT selector lever on the steering column allowsthe driver to set the automatic transmission positions P, N, R and D simply by giving it a light tap. The function commands are then transmitted wholly electronically. Additional steering-wheel gearshift paddles also facilitate manual pre-selection of the seven gears, so drivers can decide whether they want to change gear themselves using the steering-wheel shift paddles or whether they prefer this to be taken care of automatically.

Chassis & suspension

The chassis and suspension of the new M-Class impress with their fine driving dynamics and ride comfort. Working in concert with the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, they enable the best possible traction and make for enhanced driving stability both on poor roads and in off-road use.

4MATIC all-wheel-drive system (standard).The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system offers dynamic handling and enhanced stability both on and off road. As 4MATIC is always active, it is able to respond almost instantaneously in poor weather conditions such as rain, black ice or snow. It is assisted by the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and the electronic traction system 4ETS with integral

ABS and ASR functions which provide additional support for the all-wheel drive. 4ETS enables controlled braking of spinning wheels and, as a consequence, directs the drive torque to the wheels offering good traction, allowing plenty of power to be planted on the road when moving off and when accelerating, especially on poor road surfaces. 4MATIC makes conventional differential locks

practically superfluous: the automatic braking pulses make it easier to move off on slippery ground and enhance stability during critical manoeuvres.

Off-road driving mode with off-road button. The off-road-driving mode supports the driver when using the vehicle off-road by adapting the settings for the engine output, automatic transmission, anti-lock braking system ABS,

Electronic Stability Program ESP® and the electronic traction system 4ETS. This modeis activated by means of the off-road buttonin the centre console.

Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR). When the vehicle is negotiating steep downhill gradients, Down-hill Speed Regulation allows the driverto set a speed of between 2 and 18 km/h which is maintained, within the bounds of physical

possibility, through automatic control ofthe engine and transmission as well as the application of braking force. In this way DSR makes for more relaxed descents and enhances active safety during off-road driving.

Chassis & suspension

Even in standard guise, the suspension of the new M-Class with its adaptive damping system is extremely well prepared for a dynamic driving style yet delivers a remarkably comfortable ride at the same time.

Direct-Steer system. The Direct-Steer system uses an increasingly direct steering ratio to reduce the steering effort required in the case of large steering angles – when parking or negotiating tight bends, for example. Conversely, straight-line running at high speeds is particularly stable. In this way, vehicle agility and steering comfort are increased by the precise steering response and good feedback. The outstanding handling of the new M-Class is also evident in what is the smallest turning circle in this vehicle segment at just 11.80 metres. Power assistance is provided electromechanically and diminishes as theroad speed increases. Another benefit of this system is that it helps save fuel as energy is only required for the actual steering movements.

Steel suspension with selective damping system. The new suspension with selective damping system combines agility with ride comfort, enhances the dynamic handlingand comfort characteristics of the new M-Class compared with the predecessor model,and also reduces noise and vibration.As the damping system adjusts automatically to the driving situation, the damping effectand stability are enhanced, especially on uneven ground. Featuring weight-optimised aluminium components, the new double wishbone front suspension works in concert with the sophisticated four-link rear axle to ensure low road roar and tyre vibration characteristics, good driving dynamics and off-road capability.

AIRMATIC package. Thanks to the Adaptive Damping System ADS, the AIRMATIC air suspension adjusts precisely to the prevailing road and driving conditions by modifying the setup in accordance with the road surface, driving style and load status. Compared with conventional steel suspension this reduces road roar and tyre vibration while enhancing handling safety in every driving situation.

The integrated all-round self-levelling function ensures the vehicle body is maintained at a constant level regardless of the load status.A manual control allows the driver to switch between a comfort-oriented setup or a sporty one. If necessary the vehicle also switches over to stiffer settings of its own accord. When running at high speed, the body is automatically lowered to a minimum ground clearance of 161 mm to optimise driving stability, aerodynamics and fuel consumption. Below 40 km/h the vehicle’s body is raised to its normal level again.

Safe drivingIn the “safe driving” phase, vehicle systems like those in the new M-Class are able to intervene before an accident can occur. Their awareness can help defuse even critical situations and thus forms the basis for relaxed driving.

ATTENTION ASSIST. This innovative drowsiness-detection system is especially useful on long trips. At speeds of between 80 and 180 km/h, ATTENTION ASSIST warns the driver as soon as it detects signs of increasing in attention or drowsiness. Sensors analyse driving behaviour and can detect deviations froma previously determined, individual driver profile.

In the event of danger or in an accidentThe new M-Class has one of the most comprehensive arrays of safety equipment in its vehicle segment and therefore assumes a leading role in its class with regard to safety.

PRE-SAFE® system. The PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system can detect critical driving situations as they start to arise and initiate preventive measures to protect the occupants. The front seat belts can be reversibly tensioned, while open side windows or the optional sliding sunroof can be closed, depending on the driving situation and the car’s specification. These measures allow the seat belts and airbags to be deployed as effectively as possible should an accident occur. What’s more, the optionally available Memory function can move the front passenger seat into a favourable position.If the accident is avoided, the seat belts revert to their original positions while the other components can be adjusted to the desired position. The system is then ready for action again straightaway.

Standard equipment includes windowbags over both rows of seats, airbags and sidebags for the front-seat occupants as well as a driver kneebag

Airbags. The new M-Class is equipped as standard with nine airbags which can help prevent injuries or reduce the risk of injury in the event of a collision. The two adaptive front airbags deploy in either one or two stages, depending on the severity of the impact. Furthermore, the M-Class has sidebags (combined thorax/pelvis airbags) in the front seat back-rests for the driver and front passenger as well as two large windowbags extending over both rows of seats. The kneebag can further reduce the forces exerted on the driver during an accident.

Climate controlA pleasant interior climate is paramount when it comes to ensuring a high level of stress-relieving safety. This is why the climate control system for the new M-Class is exceptionally versatile and can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of the individual occupants

In the event of danger or in an accident

THERMOTRONIC. This automatic climate control system allows the driver, front passenger and rear passengers to set the temperatures for their respective areas of the vehicle independently. There is a separate control unit with a display specially for the rear. Additional air outlets in the B-pillars, two pivoting air vents in the centre console and a booster blower ensure the ideal temperature in the rear. What’s more, the automatic mode can also be adjusted to meet the needs of the individual occupants.

Load compartment managementUp to five people can enjoy the spacious accommodation provided by the new M-Class, with the rear bench seat offering not only a large amount of kneeroom but also plenty of interior height and particularly generous shoulder and elbow room.

The interior of the new M-Class is so spacious that three child seats can be secured next to each other without any difficulty. What’s more, the outer rear seats are equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchorage points as standard. Getting in is easy, too, thanks to the extremely wide opening angles of the front and rear doors. The high, upright seating position means that all the occupants can enjoy a good view. Rear passengers can also adjust the angle of the backrests independently. Despite all this passenger space, the load compartment still

offers a capacity of 690 litres (measured up to top edge of rear backrest) with five occupants on board (1025 litres if loaded to roof level). Making full use of the space provided by the new M-Class is quick and easy. It takes just a few adjustments to fold the 1/3 : 2/3 split backrests and cushions of the second row forwards to create a flat load area. With the rear seats folded, the tailgate gives you access to a load area with a capacity of 2010 litres and an almost flat floor. This figure also includes a 90-litre stowage compartment under the load compartment

floor. With a maximum load area floor length of some 1.83 metres, the new M-Class certainly won’t cramp your style and even opens upnew possibilities for transporting items. Four load-securing rings on the load compartment floor, four bag hooks at beltline level and two clothes hooks on the tailgate facilitate flexible use of the load compartment. When open allows excellent freedom of movement for loading. The load sill has a stainless steel cover to prevent the bumper and load compartment from being scratched or damaged during loading and unloading.

EASY-PACK tailgate. The EASY-PACK tailgate which can be opened and closed automatically allows the load compartment to be loaded and unloaded conveniently. The tailgate is opened and closed using either a switch on the driver’s door, the pushbutton on the inside of the tailgate, the buttons of the remote control or the exterior tailgate handle. The motor is equipped with an obstruction sensor which triggers an automatic reversal function. It is possible to restrict the opening angle to any chosen point whenever required. Manual opening and closing is

possible by using the release handle on the tailgate.

EASY-PACK load compartment cover.The load compartment cover which canbe specified as an option makes for a tidy appearance while providing protection from prying eyes. The load compartment cover including safety net behind the second rowof seats can also protect the occupants from unsecured objects in the load compartment.

Multimedia systemsThe new M-Class can be optionally equipped entertainment, the COMAND Online multimedia systemand the Rear Seat Entertainment System for the rear passengers.

Assistance systemsAssistance systems provide the driver with additional support in various driving situations and further enhance the feeling of comfort and security which the new M-Class inspires.`

COMAND Online. This system is a combination of audio and navigation systems as well as telephone and internet functions. Entertainment is provided by the DVD drive and MUSIC REGISTER with a 10 GB hard disc. An internet-capable mobile phone allows access to the web as well as mobile services from Mercedes-Benz. USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth® interfaces are provided as standard, as is an SD memory card slot.

Active Parking Assist. This system automatically looks for a suitable parking space and also parks the vehicle automatically at the touch of a button, with the driver only required to operate the accelerator, transmission and brakes after stopping, accepting the proposed parking space and selecting reverse. During automatic parking, the system’s ten ultrasonic sensors measure the distance to the vehicles to the front and rear. A control unit processes the signals from the sensors and calculates the optimum way to manoeuvre into the space.

Reversing camera with guide lines in display. The reversing camera with wide-angle lens sends images of the area directly behind the car to the COMAND display. It is activated when reverse gear is engaged, thus enhancing safety when reversing into a parking space. The reversing camera is only available in conjunction with COMAND Online.

The very first encounter with the new ML 63 AMG is an electrifying experience: even when stationary, it conveys the characteristic sense of AMG power and performance through the energy and expressiveness of its charisma. This model combines the self-assured presence of a premium SUV with the design of a sports car: one glance is all it takes to be captivated by the compelling ensemble formed by the special AMG front wings, which are 20 mm wider than usual and bear “V8 BITURBO” lettering, the high-gloss black radiator grille with its three louvres, the darkened headlamps and the powerful AMG front apron with its integrated LED daytime running lamps and matt chromed underguard. The spellbinding effect is compounded by the AMG side skirts painted in the vehicle colour and the special AMG rear apron with a chromed underguard. An impressively sound footing is

provided by the 5-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey and equipped with 265/45 R 20 tyres while the sports braking system with internally ventilated and perforated brake discs at front and rear is ready to deliver suitably high-performance stopping power. The visual tour de force that is the new ML 63 AMG is completed by the AMG sports exhaust system whose two chromed twin tailpipes integrated into the bumper promise a no less thrilling acoustic experience. Beneath this stunning exterior lies something even more impressive: the new AMG V8 biturbo engine combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed sports transmission is characterised by compelling dynamics and a degree of efficiency which is exceptional in this vehicle and performance class. On the one hand, this combination is able to provide a stirring driving experience with a rated output of 386 kW and a maximum

torque of 700 Nm. On the other hand, it allows a reduction in fuel consumption of 26.5% compared with the predecessor model. Thanks to direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion, twin turbochargers, alternator management and Controlled Efficiency mode with start/stop function. The transmission offers three different driving modes: the first of these, (“C”), is designed to enable driving with optimum fuel consumption; driving dynamics are enhanced noticeably through “Sport” (“S”) mode and on up to “Manual” (“M”) mode.The sporty experience is also enhanced bythe automatic double-declutching functionas well as the characteristic sound. The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering has a deliberately direct ratio and offers the best possible steering precision at high cornering speeds. The stiff setup of the springs and gas-pressure shock

absorbers of the AMG sports suspension, which is based on the AIRMATIC suspension with integrated ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM, guarantees optimum road feel and minimises body movements with the support of the two-stage ESP® dynamic handling control system and the AMG high-performance braking system.

ML 63 AMG Performance Package and Performance StudioExpress to impress – the AMG Performance Studio offers many attractive individualisation options which bring out the sporty presence of the new ML 63 AMG even more emphatically.

As soon as the doors are opened, attention focuses on the stainless steel sill panels with AMG lettering which are illuminated for the front doors. AMG sports seats finished in single and two-tone leather and featuringa special upholstery pattern as well as AMG badges in the front and rear backrests createa welcoming ambi-ence and are complemented by the ARTICO man-made leather trim on the upper section of the dashboard, the beltline, the armrests and the door centre panels.The AMG performance steering wheel trimmed in nappa leather with perforations in the grip area and silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles contributes to the dynamic ambience. This impression is reinforced by features such as AMG floor mats, the AMG sports pedals in stainless steel with rubber studs and the AMG instrument cluster with its colour display.

The standard leather upholstery is available in three colours while two-tone leather upholstery and designo leather are available as optional

extras. The black headlining, heated front seats and the sliding glass sunroof add the finishing touches to the exclusive ambience.

The AMG Performance Studio offers a rangeof options to underline the dynamic side ofthe new ML 63 AMG. The AMG Performance Package, for example, boosts the output by 24 kW to 410 kW and increases the maximum torque by 60 Nm to 760 Nm. It also underlines the enhanced performance of the new ML 63 AMG with visual cues comprising red-painted

AMG brake callipers, an AMG engine coverin carbon fibre and the AMG performance steering wheel.
