MENYHEI SZABOLCS FESTMNYEIRL

Menyhei Szabolcs a valsgbl kivgott elemek sszeillesztsvel teremti meg realisztikusnak tn, de kpzeletbeli tereit. A perspektivikus brzols s festszet technikai ismeretnek magabiztos alkalmazsval hozza ltre vals kzterek illzijt kelt alkotsait. Elhanyagolt, a vros kevsb biztonsgos terletei trulnak elnk. Olyan, a hzak mgtt megbj krnyezet, melyet nem tesznk a kirakatba s eldugott siktorokba nyl hts ajtkon t kzeltnk meg. A lelt utckon csoportokba rendezett, statikus alakok tnnek fel. A graffitivel bortott falak a tglkig mllanak. A kpeken nem trtnik semmi, ugyanakkor mintha szrevtlenl s titokban mgis zajlana valami. Mintha az alkot a prbeszdek kzti csendet vagy a mozdulat eltti mozdulatlansgot rgztette volna. Az elhanyagoltsg s mocsok kellemetlen rzseket bresztenek. Ugyanakkor a bennnk jelen lv flelmekrl, a rejteni vagy szgyellni valrl, a vrosi emberrl, fogyasztsrl s lvezetekrl beszlnek, arrl a gyengesgrl, ami valakit egy ilyen krnykre hajt. Szabolcs kpeivel visszafogottan, trgyilagosan szemlli trsadalmunkat, s egy ltez llapotknt kezeli a jelensget. Menyhei Szabolcs a figurlis festszet krn bell alkot. Mveivel nem mesl trtneteket; a festszeti problmk legalbb annyira izgatjk, mint a tartalmi oldal. A vrosi ptett krnyezet remek lehetsget nyjt a tri jtkokra. A geometrikus formk a perspektva s a plasztikus fny-rnyk viszonyok segtsgvel vlnak hromdimenzis krnyezett. A holland fest mvein sokszor tallkozhatunk az rnykba borul eltr s a fnyl httr festi megoldsnak variciival, akrcsak Menyhei Szabolcs utcakpek sorozatnak legfrissebb alkotsainl. London tekintetben meg kell emlteni azt a msik nagyon jelents inspircis forrst, mely a mindennapi tapasztalat tjn megismert nagyvrosi atmoszfrbl tpllkozik. A belvros szrakoz-negyednek extrm alakjai, flrees utci, a fmlpcss hts ajtk, graffitik, a vros mocska s szemete ksznnek vissza jabb kompozciin. London kivl lehetsg a vrosi krnyezet vizulis mintavtelre. Menyhei Szabolcs kpeinek gazdag textri s faktri mr utcasorozatnak els kpeinl is jelents szerepet tltttek be. A vastagon felhordott, olykor kssel felkent vagy kvarccal kevert, esetleg visszakapart festk vltozatos felletet nyjt. Anyagksrleteiben Matteo Massagrande olasz festmvsz tapasztalatai nyjtottk szmra a legtbb tmutatst s segtsget. Ezek megismerse, illetve az eurpai galrik mvszeti anyagnak tanulmnyozsa rvn tudatosult benne, hogy mvszetnek fontos alappillre a fellet, a pasztzus anyaghasznlat s az anyagismeret.

Menyhei Szabolcs nagy mretben dolgozik, mely az vek elrehaladtval mgis egyre kisebbnek bizonyul. Az rzethez nyilvn hozzjrul ecsetkezelsnek szabadsga s formakvetse, mely a nagyobb felleteken felszabadultabban, korltok nlkl mkdik. Ebben a tekintetben nagy hatst gyakorolt r Lucian Freud, akinek munkssgt nagyra tartja mind a tma, mind a festszeti megoldsok tekintetben. Korbbi alkoti peridusban Freud munkival rokonthat, nagy test, telt aktokat festett, melyeket legtbbszr fejbl trva, formailag eltlozva brzolt.

ABOUT THE PAINTINGS OF SZABOLCS MENYHEIIlona Istvnffyfine artist

Szabolcs Menyhei creates his seemingly realistic, but imaginary spaces by cutting pieces out of reality. The perspective representation and the confident usage of painting techniques allow him to create the illusion of lifelike plazas. Neglected and less safe areas of the city unfold in front of our eyes. Areas that are not to be put in display windows but that are reached through doors opening to hidden alleys behind houses. In the worn-out streets static figures gather in groups. The graffiti covered walls are coming off revealing the bricks. Nothing is happening in these pictures, though something is going on secretly and unnoticed. It is like if the silence between conversations or the stillness before a movement had been recorded. The forlornness and the filth arouse unpleasant feelings. Moreover they speak about our fears, shames and the people of big cities along with consumption, pleasures and the weakness which drive one to these areas. Szabolcs looks at our society through his artwork in a rather objective manner, dealing with the phenomenon more like a given state. Szabolcs Menyhei is a figurative painter, his artworks do not tell stories. He is just as fascinated by the technical problems as of the ones related to the content. The constructed city surroundings give excellent opportunities for playing with space. The geometric shapes become a three dimensional environment with the help of perspective and the statuesque light and shadow relations. The role played by the light in forming spaces has taken a leading part in the artists work during the last years artistic period. His interest of this matter was raised by the works of Pieter de Hooch, a prominent representative of the Delft School, whose pictures were studied by the artist in person during his stay in London. On the Dutch painters works we can often meet the variations of a shadowy foreground and a sunlit background, similar to Szabolcs Menyheis newest pieces of the street picture series. In relation to London, we also have to mention another very inspirational source which originates from the big city atmosphere experienced on an everyday basis. The extreme figures of the downtown entertainment district, its secluded streets, doors with metal staircases, graffiti with the dirt and filth of the city appear in the subsequent paintings compositions. London is an exquisite opportunity to take visual samples of urban surroundings. The rich textures and factures on Szabolcs Menyheis pictures played an important role even on the early works of his street series. The thickly applied paint, that is sometimes laid on by an artists knife or mixed with quartz or occasionally scraped back, gives a varied surface. The most help and guidance related to experiments with materials came from the Italian painter, Matteo Massagrandes experience. Getting familiar with these and studying the masterpieces of European galleries, Szabolcs came to the conclusion that the basis of his art is the heavy material usage with the strong knowledge of the material itself.

Szabolcs Menyhei works in big sizes which seem to be not big enough throughout the years. The sensation is probably evoked by the freedom of his brushstrokes and their way of following the contours that is looser on larger surfaces and works without limitations. Regarding this, Lucian Freud, whose work is greatly appreciated by him on the matter of theme and painting solutions, had a huge influence on him. In his earlier artistic period Szabolcs painted figures with enormous bodies that were usually somehow distorted, formally exaggerated. In contrast the figures in his street series are real people: friends, relatives, strangers who were photographed with the intention of theme collecting. The people in the pictures might exist in reality but they are only formally the same as the models, and they are neither works of portraits, nor collections of portrayals. Everyone is forced to play a role far away from or only partially similar to their personalities, that could come true under different circumstances. These nonexistent, but appearing to be real figures perfectly blend in the fictional, though realistic space where events that have never happened are shown as a possible version of the truth, emerging as an alternative reality.

BIOGRAPHYSzabolcs Menyhei was born in Kecskemt, Hungary in 1980 (His birth name is Joseph Szabolcs Menyhei). As a kid, he was always fond of drawing and later became interested in computer graphics as well. He had never thought of becoming a professional artist until his father advised him to learn from a reputed master. He went to the Free Art School of Kecskemt to study painting at the age of 20. He studied under the guidance of Andrs Bruncsk and also attended the life drawing classes of Pter Gyenes. He gained his first degree at the University of Szeged in 2005 and later graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2008. His master was Pl Lzr. He is also grateful to all the artists he has worked with since then: Istvn Szappanos, Ilona Istvnffy, Jzsef Balogh, Ferenc Farkas and everyone from the art camp of Hajs, Vernka, Kalocsa and Izsk. He is a founding member of the X group (community of young fine artists living and working in Kecskemt). The subjects and motifs of his paintings are contemporary, but technically his works are deeply rooted in the classical tradition of European painting. In that regard he considers Matteo Massagrande as a major influence from whom he learned a lot about the techniques of the Old Masters. He worked at the Katedra Secondary School of Arts between 2005 and 2011, where he was teaching traditional and digital art, art history. He also worked as a freelance graphic artist, painting background for animated features and series and later turned to movies. Most recently he worked for the prestigious Double Negative Visual Effects studio. He contributed to the visual effects of Total Recall, Rush (directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard) and currently working on Thor: The Dark World.
