DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2014/15

ABOUT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

The Worlds first civic service organization, Rotary International is expanding into Nyali & Downtown, Mombasa. Rotary Club of Mombasa Nyali received its charter on 12th March 2015 and Downtown received its charter on 16th March 2015, to join RI’s global association of over 1.2 million Rotarians from over 34,282 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary International is an organization of service clubs known as Rotary Clubs located all over the world. It is a secular organiza-tion open to all persons regardless of race, colour, creed, gender or political preferences and is open to all cultures and creeds. The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago more than a century ago in 1905.

In more than 34,000 clubs worldwide you will find members who volunteer in communities at home and abroad to support education and job training, provide clean water, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation and eradicate polio.

The members of Rotary International are business and professional leaders who come together to form a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities and who encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The Rotary Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the association, awards millions of dollars each year to worthy projects carried out by Clubs and Districts working locally and in international partnerships. The Rotary Foundation also sponsors the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships program.

Since 1985, eradicating polio worldwide has been Rotary’s top priority philanthropic goal. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with Rotary in this endeavour in challenge grants that have seen Rotary raise US$200million matched by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the tune of US$355million

ABOUT DISTRICT 9212 The district and international structure is designed to support the Rotary Clubs and help them provide more service in their local communities and abroad. Clubs are grouped into about 535 RI districts each led by a district governor who is an officer of RI. The district administration guides and supports the Club.

We currently belong to a multi-country district designated District 9212 (D9212) which comprises Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. Our District Governor is Bimal Kantaria from the Rotary Club of Industrial Area. D9212 came into effect on 1st July 2013. This year has seen the District grow phenomenally with over 26 New Rotary Clubs coming on board of which Rotary Clubs of Nyali and Mombasa Down Town form a part.

ROTARY PRESIDENTIAL THEME 2014/2015 – LIGHT UP ROTARY: Each year the Rotary International President champions a theme and this year RIP Gary C.K. Huang has urged us to

Light Up Rotary by sharing our service, strengthening our clubs and letting our light shine in our Communities– at the

Kenyan Coast as around the world we continue to work to bring health, safety, education and human dignity to the

local communities.

Rotary’s primary motto is “Service Above Self”

which evolved from the earlier motto – “He profits most who serves best
