Key Aspects of Mentoring

Mentoring involves:

• Coaching and learning

• Includes mutual growth and fulfillment

• Is a two way relationship between mentor and mentee

A Comprehensive District Mentoring Program aims to:• Assist first year teachers in the performance

of their duties and adjustments to the challenges of their teaching assignment

• Reduce novice attrition

• Improve effectiveness of new teachers

• Enhance teacher knowledge and strategies of The New Jersey Student Learning Standards to facilitate student achievement and growth.

EffectivenessHow do we know mentoring is working?

• Mentee is achieving success as a professional staff member with students, staff and community during their first year

• Mentor continues to demonstrate a record of success in the classroom and with colleagues

• Mentor has earned a record of Effective or higher on teacher practice instrument

NJDOE Mentoring Program

• 1 full school year of 1:1 mentoring

• Mentor must meet once a week with mentee for first 4 weeks-for CEAS certificate mentee

• Mentor must meet once a week with mentee for first 8 weeks-for CE certificate mentee

• Mentor must lead mentee in guided self-assessment on Danielson

• Mentor must align support to mentee's preparation curriculum (CE)

Mentors: state requirements

• Mentor must have 3 years of teaching experience

• Mentor must earn a summative rating of Effective or Highly Effective on most recent summative evaluation.

• Mentor must keep logs of contact time and submit logs to the Personnel Office once a month

• Mentor must meet once a week with mentee for first 8 weeks-for CE certificate mentee

• Mentor must meet once a week with mentee for first 4 weeks-for CEAS certificate mentee

• Mentor must lead mentee in guided self-assessment on Danielson

• All payment transactions handled by Personnel Office

District Mentoring Plan

• District must specify a comprehensive orientation to the district for all new first year teachers

• Specify minimum mentoring requirements during the critical first weeks of employment

• Specify particular mentor support activities for novice teachers

• Update the training and experience requirements for teachers serving as 1-1 mentors

• Log for contact time for 1-1 mentor and novice provisional teacher

• Align the three required formative and summative evaluations of the novice provisional teacher with required observations through Achieve NJ
