Welcome back!
This month’s newsletter will begin with information about local events and focus on the exciting opportunities for interaction hosted by UNM’s STEM Collaborative Center.
The articles in focus this month are aimed to show what kind of mentoring works for different populations and includes how to set up an effective mentoring network. The newsletter will continue with information about the upcoming conference and bios from some of our workshop and world café leaders and plenary speakers. Also included is information about sponsorship and membership. Finally, we will discuss the Mentoring Institute’s social media platforms and how to stay connected.

Happy July, Mentoring Community!
It has been an extremely busy month as our staff prepares for peer review! All of this year’s concurrent session speakers papers are under review as of July 1st and we are so excited! During the month of June, we have been working on preparing programs and proceedings, reviewing the past CMC articles, and preparing our website with speaker and workshop information. In light of this, we are looking forward to the influx of new material provided by this year’s submissions. As we go into the month of July, it is a wonderful time to reflect on all that the conferences have accomplished in bringing professionals together to communicate and define what kinds of mentoring will be useful, when, and where.
As stated in last month’s newsletter, this month will focus on mentoring diverse populations. Although we always make a point to diversify our networks, at this time we will take an especially in depth look at how different populations require different levels of support.
As an additional note, this month we have dedicated a page to our social media because we are looking to reach a broader audience. We ask that, if you have a moment, you please follow these pages and use them as resource to find information about the latest in mentoring.
At this time, I would like to recognize the hard work of my incredible co-workers, Wei and Aubrielle, and the Mentoring Institute Director, Nora, as they are working to prepare for the conference and make sure that every activity goes smoothly to ensure its usual high quality and increase the opportunity for collaboration.

“The need to increase the number of college graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines is a national issue. As the demographics of the United States’ population grow increasingly more diverse, the recognition that students of color are disproportionately under-represented among those individuals successful at completing STEM degrees requires exigent and sustained intervention. Although a range of efforts and funding have been committed to increasing the success of under-represented minority (URM) students at primarily white, or majority, institutions, widespread progress has been slow. Simultaneously, Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions have demonstrated disproportionate successes in graduating URM students with STEM degrees and those that proceed to completing graduate-level degrees in the sciences. The differential successes of particular institutions with promoting the achievement of diverse individuals in obtaining academic STEM degrees suggest that with committed and strategic leadership, advancements in creating academic communities that promote the success of a diverse range of students in STEM can be achieved in part through assessing and mitigating environmental barriers that impede success at majority institutions. In this paper, we address issues related to the engagement of URM students in majority settings and describe some efforts that have shown success for promoting diversity in STEM and highlight continuing issues and factors associated with cultivating diversity in academic STEM disciplines at majority institutions. Recommended efforts include addressing academic assistance, professional and cultural socialization issues and institutional environmental factors that are associated with success or lack thereof for URMs in STEM.”
