2015-2016 Season Record: 7-1 (1st in OUA)

Playoff Record: 1-1 (beat McMaster in semi’s, lost to Queen’s in OUA Final)

The Gryphons matched a school record by posting a 7-1 record during the regular season. The first of those seven wins was the most impressive as the

Gryphons opened their 2015 regular season with a 35-28 victory over perennial power Queen’s. That victory marked the Gryphons first win over the

Gaels since 1998.

After defeating McMaster in an OUA semi-final, the Gryphons earned the right to host the three-time defending Turner Trophy champion Queen's Gaels

in what was a re-match of the 2014 OUA Final. The match was played on U of G's campus (Varsity Field) in front of a huge crowd. The Gryphons, who

were trying to win their first OUA title in Men's Rugby since 1998, and just the third in school history (with the other coming in 1974), ultimately fell just

short as they lost 24-23 to the Gaels.

The silver medal marked the Gryphons fifth straight season in which they earned an OUA medal. A total of six Gryphons were named OUA All-Stars

while head coach Darrell Devine was named OUA Coach of the Year for the third time in this his 9th season as head coach of the Gryphons.

2014-2015 Season Record: 7-1

Playoff Record: 1-1; OUA Silver Medalists

For a fourth straight season, the Gryphons men’s rugby team took home a medal. After three consecutive bronze medal finishes, this time around it was

silver as the Gryphons fell just short in the OUA Final versus the Queen’s Gaels.

The men’s rugby team matched the school record for most wins in the regular season by going an impressive 7-1 (the 2012-2013 team also posted a 7-1

regular season record). A four match win streak to start the season saw the Gryphons outscore their opponents by an astonishing total of 221-14. A 33-17

loss to the defending champions Queen’s would then be followed up with three more wins heading into the post-season.

After earning a bye in the first round of the playoffs, the Gryphons played host to the Brock Badgers in an OUA semi-final showdown. The match was

played at Alumni Stadium and saw the Gryphons come up with their strongest defensive performance of the season. The result was an 18-0 shutout over

the Badgers. While points were hard to come by, fourth year man Martin Damianoff electrified the crowd with a highlight reel 50-metre sprint for a try to

give the Gryphons an early lead. Joe Newman also converted a pair of penalty kicks on the day. As a result of the 18-0 victory, the Gryphons earned a

spot in the OUA Final.

In the OUA championship match, the Gryphons would go up against two-time defending champion Queen’s. The Gryphons got off to a fast start, jumping

out to a 16-0 lead 30 minutes into the match thanks in part to tries from Alexander Charest-Pekeski and Eric Howard. However, the Gaels were able to

respond with a strong second half in which they scored 29 unanswered points on the way to a 32-23 victory.

The Gryphons had a five players named OUA All-Starts (Eric Charest-Pekeski, Jeremy Wright, Joe Newman, Eric Howard and Byron Boville), as well

as two major award winners (All-Around Player – Jeremy Wright, OUA Rookie of the Year – Brandon McLeod).

2012-2013 League Results: 7-1

Playoff Results: OUA Bronze Medalists

The men’s rugby team had an incredible turnaround season in the OUA with a regular season record of 7-1 to finish second entering the postseason. Their

top two finish was good for a first-round bye to bring the Western Mustangs to Guelph for the semi-final game. After defeating the Mustangs 12-5 in the

regular season, the Gryphons dropped a heartbreaking 21-15 loss to keep them out of gold medal contention. They bounced back to take their second

consecutive bronze medal with a dominant 48-8 performance over the Brock Badgers.

The Gryphons were rewarded with five OUA All-Stars. Byron Boville (Barrie, Ont.) earned the most valuable player award and first career all-star nod

after scoring eight tries and added a convert for 42 points on the year. Fly half Jonathan West (Scarborough, Ont.), fourth-year prop Graeme

Mahar (Toronto), flanker Nicholas Walters (Mississauga, Ont.) and third-year eight-man Robert Paris (Barrie, Ont.) all joined Boville as all-stars. The

award is the second in as many seasons for West.

2011-2012 Season Record: 3-4-1

Championship Results: OUA Bronze Medalists

The Gryphon men’s rugby team finished the regular season with a 3-4-1 record in fourth place for a spot in the post-season. In the OUA quarterfinal, the

Gryphons defeated the Waterloo Warriors 27-10 at Varsity Field in front of an excited home crowd. The Gryphons were unable to overcome the top-

seeded Western Mustangs and dropped a 28-3 semi-final game. In the OUA bronze medal game, the Gryphons took on the McMaster Marauders and won

the bronze medal with a decisive win of 26-16.

Four Gryphons were named OUA All-Stars this season and Darrell Devine was recipient of the OUA Coach of the Year award. This is the second time

Devine has won a coach of the year award with his first honour coming in 2008. All-Star honors went to Joe Newman (Waterdown, ON), Jon West

(Scarborough, ON), Scott Beukeboom (Lindsay, ON), and Nathan Lippert (Oakville, ON). Newman, in his second season with the Gryphons, finished

The men’s rugby team finished the regular season in eighth place in OUA standings with a 1-7 record. The team’s one win this season was against

Toronto’s Varsity Blues, which they won by a staggering 56-12 lead. Many of their losses were close calls, with Guelph barely behind in points.

Guelph had one OUA leader this season in overall points: C Leonard (Toronto, ON) scored 20 points (8 GP, 4 tries) finishing 16th in overall OUA

scoring. Two Gryphons were named OUA all-stars including Leonard for the second time in two years and Scott Beukeboom (Lindsay, ON) for the first

time.

2007-2008 The Men’s Rugby team made their first appearance in the playoffs in four years finishing the season with a 4-3 league record and third in the OUA West.

In the quarter-finals, the Gryphons lost a 30-3 decision to the McMaster Marauders to end their season. Three Gryphons were named OUA West

Division All-Stars including fifth-year Matt Hendrie (Brantford, Ont.), second-year Harrison Brown (Toronto, Ont.) and fourth-year Kyle Binkley

(Barrie, Ont.). Hendrie and Brown both led the Gryphons in points and ranked 12th in OUA scoring accumulating 25 points with 5 tries in seven matches

apiece. The recent focus on building the program has begun to bring the Gryphons back as contenders in the OUA and the players and coaches alike are

excited about the prospects for the future.

the OUA playoffs. The Gryphons played hard until the end, closing out the season with a 1-point loss to the Windsor Lancers. Dave Neill and forward

Geoff Sinke were named OUA West Division All-Stars. Sinke led the Gryphons in points and ranked 13th in OUA scoring accumulating 30 points with

8 conversions in 6 matches. This marked Sinke’s third appearance in as many years on the All-Star squad.

2005-2006 The Gryphs had a tough season this year finishing at the bottom of the West Division standings with a 3-5-0 record, but it was not without highlights.

Matt Hendrie was 10th leading scorer in the OUA with 6 tries for 30 points in 7 contests from the outside centre position. Teo Schwartenztruber,

Guelph’s #8 man and wing Geoff Sinke were recognized as OUA West Division All-Stars. In 6 games, Teo accumulated 20 points on the season with 4

tries while Sinke accumulated 18 points with 8 conversions in 6 matches. This marked Sinke’s second appearance in as many years on the All-Star team.

2004-2005 The 2004 campaign was a carbon copy of the Gryphons’ first game of the year in which they lost to Windsor 20-17. The Gryphs dominated

possession and territory in most of their games throughout the season, but were unable to turn those advantages into points. Guelph’s hard working

pack led by the front row of Ron Hamilton, Dave Neill and Sean Maloney was definitely one of the bright spots. The other highlight was the

continued improvement of the back row sparked by Geoff Sinke who dominated lineout plays in the league this year. Overall, the Gryphs sported a 2-

5 league record and finished in 5th spot in the West Division. Captain Dave Neill and Geoff Sinke were named OUA West All-Stars.

2003-2004 With a 5-3 record, the Gryphons finished 2nd in Tier II and earned a berth to the playoffs. Unfortunately, a loss to Queen’s, the 3rd place team in Tier

I, kept the Gryphs from advancing to the semi-finals. Five Gryphons were recognized as OUA All-Stars including lock Geoff Brooks, hooker Dave

Neill, 8-man Matteo Schwartzentruber, scrum half Ryan Williamson and prop Chris Keillor who received honours for his second year in a row.

2002-2003 The Gryphons battled hard throughout an injury-plagued season seeing players bumped to different positions and young rookies gain experience in

pivotal roles facing tough OUA Tier I competition. Despite the overall season record of 0-6, the Gryphon side showed evidence of promise in their

young squad and ended the season on an upbeat note against the first place Western Mustangs. Chris Keillor was selected as an OUA All-Star at the

flanker position.

2001-2002 Sporting a large core of veterans, the Men's Rugby team hoped to repeat last year's unbeaten league performance. Unfortunately, the Gryphons were

unable to achieve a perfect record in their 2001-02 campaign finishing with a 5-2-1 record. They outscored the competition 352 to 104 scoring 91

unanswered points against Toronto, an all-time record and followed it up with a 90-5 victory over York. Throughout the season, the team lost three of

their starters due to injury. With a bye on the last weekend of league play and one late loss, the Gryphons were idle while fate determined their

playoff hopes. Regrettably, the Gryphs ended their season in 5th spot, without a berth to post-season action. Nonetheless, there was a silver lining in

that Steve Foti and James O'Shea earned First Team All-Star status while Ryan DeForge, Adam Seewald and Brian Fritz grabbed Second Team

honours.

2000-2001 Sporting an impressive 6-0-2 unbeaten record, the Men’s Rugby Gryphons ended up in a 3-way tie for top spot in the OUA. In a

semi final showdown, the Gryphs had their title hopes come to an end with a 31-13 loss to the defending OUA champion.

Western Mustangs. However, the 2000 season wrapped up on a positive note with 5 players receiving All Star recognition and

head coach, Gary Whitley, sharing Coach of the Year honours. Captain and centre, Steve Foti, flyhalf, James O’Shea and

fullback, Clayton Gillis, were named as First Team OUA All Stars with flanker, Ryan Ellement and veteran centre, Brendan

Murphy, placing on the Second Team. Gary Whitley’s award marks the second time in 3 years that he has achieved this honour.

1996-1997 Despite playing competitive rugby, particulary as the season progressed, the ‘96 Gryphons were hard pressed to find the winning column. Highlights

of the season were the tied game at Queen’s, the only point the Gaels dropped at home in their championship season and the win over Waterloo which

guaranteed a spot in division one next season.

1983-1984 Despite losing eight players from the team that finished in first place the previous year, the Gryphons finished with a 4-4-1 record
