Facility UpdateApril 11, 2015 was the dedication of the Lauritsen/Wohlers Outdoor Golf Practice Facility and after a full year of use of the facility, we couldn’t be happier! The 24-acre practice facility continues to challenge the team as members can practice from a variety of grasses, off of

different contours and in various wind directions. They are able to practice hitting to specific targets with four target greens and two fairways. Illini golfers have ample opportunity to hone their short games with a 15,000 square foot putting green and three tremendous wedge areas.

The incredible facility was made possible through the generous donations of Jim and Kay Lauritsen and the Albert Wohlers family, in addition to Steve and Nicki Stricker, Don and Anne Edwards, Brent Wadsworth, Dr. Arthur Wyatt, Steven Wymer, Jeff and Madalyn Tinervin, the Demirjian family and Austin Apgar. With the input of Steve Stricker and Head Coach Mike Small, architect Jeff Brauer designed this one-of-a-kind facility, which was constructed by Wadsworth Construction Company.

During the spring, we were excited to complete the construction of a turf care center within the 24-acre facility, thanks to the generosity of Jeff and Madalyn Tinervin. Our turf care center houses our facility superintendent Mike Rayman, who came to us last February from Weibring Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois. We have Austin Apgar to thank for the incredible donation of the fleet of John Deere equipment in addition to all of the tools that keep the facility to the highest of standards.

Illini Golf Classic...Almost Here!We are quickly approaching the 15th Annual Illini Golf Classic hosted by Illini Tour Professionals, which will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club on August 21-22, 2016. This year’s event will be full of plenty of excitement as Steve Stricker, Scott Langley and Luke Guthrie will be in attendance. Stricker recently recorded his second-best major championship finish, and his highest major championship finish since 2012, at the 2016 British Open. In addition to playing at an extremely high level, next month Stricker will have the honor of serving as an assistant captain for Team USA in the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Langley and Guthrie have also posted some solid finishes on the PGA Tour this year, with Langley’s highest finish thus far being a T11 at the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach. Guthrie began the season with a top-10 finish at the Frys.com Open and recently recorded a top-20 finish at the Barbasol Championship.

Although we are already full for the golf portion of the 2016 Illini Golf Classic, there are still tickets available for the welcoming gala and auction on August 21st. Additionally, we are still in search for an On-Course Cart Sponsor. If you are interested in being part of the event and supporting the Illini Men’s Golf Team, please contact Jackie Szymoniak at 217-244-1142 or [email protected]. You can also view the event brochure by clicking here. We hope you will be able to enjoy this unique opportunity to spend some time with and learn from Illini greats!

Western Am Champ! For the first time ever, an Illini team member hoisted the Western Amateur trophy. The journey began with rising juniors Nick Hardy and Dylan Meyer both earning a spot in the Sweet 16 after the 54-hole stroke play portion. Hardy earned the No. 5 seed after finishing 4-under par for the 54-hole stroke-play portion. Meyer earned the No. 15 seed with a 54-hole score of even par. Hardy got knocked out in his first match against Davis Riley of University of Alabama. Meyer, however, stayed steady in his opening match, recording two birdies over the 18 holes and winning 1-up over Michael DeMorat of Liberty University. In the second match, he was 4-under par through 14 holes to win 5&4 over Doug Ghim of University of Texas. In the semifinalist match, Meyer faced Will Gordon of Vanderbilt and was once again victorious with a 4&2 win. Meyer went on to face the 54-hole medalist of the event, Sam Horsfield of University of Florida in the championship match. Meyer fell

two down after five holes, however, came roaring back to defeat Horsfield 3&1. To date, this marks Meyer’s most prestigious amateur victory as he joins a list of Western Amateur Champions such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus.

Illinois Am Champ!Nick Hardy recently added an Illinois Amateur Championship to his resume. Hardy posted a record-setting 54-hole total of 28-under par with rounds of 65-66-64-65 at St. Charles Country Club from July 19-21. In addition to finishing 10 shots ahead of the runner-up, Hardy’s total also beat the previous tournament record, held by Jerry Haas, by 15 shots.

U.S. Am BoundBoth Meyer and Hardy, plus incoming freshman Bryan Baumgarten, are all slated to compete in amateur golf’s greatest championship, the 115th U.S. Amateur Championship, at Oakland Hills Country Club in Township, Michigan, from August 15-21. Scoring will be available at www.usga.org and the match play portion will also be televised on Fox.

Another Major

Next week, you can see Head Coach Mike Small, as he competes in his 13th major championship. Small posted 65 (-7) last month to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open, which will be played at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, from August 11-14. This marks Coach Small’s first run at the U.S. Senior Open title as he celebrated his 50th birthday earlier this year.
