I swear, I almost had him... until he twisted my arm behind my back in some sick, demented hold called a Scrambled Chicken Wing Neck Brake or something. I had him.

Jerry Th e King Lawler was mine! Well not in the wrestling sense.

We met him at the radio station (Sports 56), where we record our weekly radio show (Memphis Sport Radio on Saturdays at 2pm). He proceeded to tell us that he only had a few hours to give us.

    Only a few hours?!?

Most people we interview are barely able to give us fi ft een minutes of their time... What are we going to do with him for a few hours?

So he sat in on our radio show for a segment (you can listen to it on memphissport.net). We took a bunch of photos (wherein my arm was nearly torn from its socket). And we asked questions... a ton of questions and he answered them all.

Other than the pain I endured (for the good of the magazine, of course), I have

    PUBLISHERS NOTE

    Mike Bullard, publisher

to say, we were overwhelmed by our interview with Jerry Th e King Lawler this month. We have been publishing Memphis Sport for more than two years now (in fact, what you hold in your hands is the fi rst issue of our third year), and not one athlete, manager, or business associate has been more forthcoming, more willing to participate or more giving of their time than the King.

Th e whole experience was truly a pleasure. Th is is one interview we will certainly do again. As soon as I brush up on my wrestling moves.

Ill get you next time Jerry Lawler!

Where do I shoot?Maggies article was great this issue, but I want to shoot some skeet, blast some

sporting clays and feel the kick of that big gun. But you didnt say where in Tunica I can go for shotgun thrills! - Jeremy B.

I normally hate Maggies take on the world of sports and this issue was no diff erent. You are welcome to stop printing her articles whenever you like. However, I would really like to know where I can go shooting in Tunica. I never heard of this place and Maggie didnt say where she was in the article. - Rodney N.

Staff Blogs From Grizzlies welcome O.J. Mayo... posted on Kevin Cerritos Blogo:

Nothing against Kevin Love, he just wouldnt have brought the star power, attention, and hope that comes with draft ing O.J. Mayo. Grizzlies fans are lucky that the only two Kevins at todays post-draft press conference were me and Kevin Kane. Of course this does mean, the printing of a Gay Love t-shirt line is not going to happen...

Let the O.J. Mayo era begin.

Move over Miss Cordelias, you are no longer the only place downtown where someone can pay a lot of money for some O.J.

Fridays promotion at Autozone was Jonesboro Community Night. Th e fun things about community nights are all of the booths they bring out before the games, featuring many local businesses. It is nice to see people who dont typically come to the ballpark come and instantly feel the community, not only their own, but that of the ballpark as well.

Th e price of gas is out of sightAnd from what I hear it even might;Go even higher and if thats the caseTh e motoring public may have to face,Th at since the oil companies feel no remorseWe all may have to get a horse. So, we get a horse and everything we needAnd then just watch the price of feed. So, what Im about to say may sound funnyBut I think its a conspiracy to get our money. Now, I certainly dont want to be thought of as rudeBut I think the American people are getting screwed.

    Really packs a wallop.

    1. What was your greatest athletic achievement while at Christian Brothers High School?

It was probably when we defeated Jackson Central Mary, then ranked third in the state, in the post-season on Th anksgiving Day. I broke off a couple of really nice runs in that game at the running-back position. It was either the 1973 or 1974 season. We went 10-1.

    2. What about while as a defensive back at Memphis?

Defi nitely the huge win over the Houston Cougars. Ranked third in the country, their players came in with very nonchalant attitudes about the game. Th en, Earnest Gray set the record for Memphis longest TD pass/reception, I think at 97 yards. I had a couple of really nice QB hurries and backfi eld tackles while splitting time at defensive back. Houston only lost two games that year, ours and the other aft er a last-second TD pass by Joe Montana and Notre Dame in the last game of the year.

    3. Why in the world did you start the go-to-commercial-off -camera-double-fi nger-point?

Man, I dont know. Just for the heck of it. Maybe I saw somebody do it or something. But once I did it and our producer (Brent Green) went with it, it stuck. And well be right...BACK!

    4. Have you ever grown your hair out?

I keep my hair short because I cant grow it! A long time ago I tried to see if I could grow out a beard and Ive tried the fro look, but it just aint happenin.

    5. Do you compete in offi ce olympics with Dave Cera?

Sometimes during Friday Football Fever, we throw the ball around the offi ce. Yeah, sometimes we shoot some baskets into the trash can. But since (Nick) Paranjape moved to Nashville, Dave, Carrie and I have a lot more to do. Were always runnin.

    BRING IT ON

by KEVIN CERRITO photo by MIKE BULLARD

What do the Diamond Darlings do? We get the balls and the bats for players. If Stan (veteran U of M bat boy) is at the game, he does home bats.

What do you like most about baseball? Th at it is not fast-paced, but it is still exciting. I love the thrill of watching someone try to make the play to get the guy out.

Favorite Major League Baseball team? Braves.

Favorite concession stand food? Th e hot dog at Nat Buring Stadium is my ultimate favorite. Every time I work, I eat a hot dog.

Peanuts or Cracker Jacks? Peanuts. I dont like the caramel that gets stuck in my teeth when I eat Cracker Jacks.

Dan Uggla or DeAngelo Williams? Dan Uggla.

The Daily Helmsman or Commercial Appeal? Daily Helmsman. Ive posted some stories in there.

What is the weirdest thing to happen to you while at a game? I actually got a baseball from a visiting player with a love note and phone number on it, telling me I was pretty and asking what I was doing later.

    Did you call him? No.

What do you think about the new baseball stadium that the U of M is building this year? I am glad they are doing it. Guys are cramped in the locker room. It is good for the team, good for everyone. M

    Why do we play sports?

Why do we exhaust ourselves endlessly chasing

one another within fence enclosed grassy meadows or

frustrate ourselves by attempting to thwart the laws

of physics that dictate an object at rest will remain at rest

or punish ourselves with the unnatural pursuit of

conquering environments we have no business

    wading into?

Why? Because it is there. Because the human

spirit wont take no for an answer. Because adrenaline is

a drug that feeds the soul. And because for those lucky

few able to run faster, jump higher, throw farther and

    dive deeper, glory awaits.

    So we play.

But not all of us are built for speed. Fewer still are built

to absorb the punishment sports inflict. And

none of us are eternally sixteen years old.

    So we get hurt.

But we dont mind. Even the biggest,

strongest, and fastest of us get hurt. We

accept that as part of sport. What we

dont like, what we detest, is not being

    able to play.

    Thats where Campbell Clinic

    comes in.

Our sports medicine staff specializes in

getting athletes off the training table and

back on the field as quickly as possible. But

were not just experts in sports medicine,

were also the leader in general orthopaedics.

So is it any wonder that the most serious of

athletes, those from the professional and

    college ranks, choose Campbell Clinic?

And if people whose careers are dependent

upon healthy bodies think were the best, then

odds are were a pretty good choice for weekend

warriors, long-time couch potatoes, or anyone

who turns an ankle, wrenches a back or twists a wrist.

Because even if youre tough enough to play with pain,

theres no reason you should have to.

    Jerry Lawler

by KEVIN CERRITO photos by SHARON BICKS

Jerry Th e King Lawler is one of the most famous and beloved celebrities in the history of Memphis. Long before the world started watching him every Monday night on RAW, Memphians paid to see him every Monday night at the Mid-South Coliseum. At 58, the Treadwell High School graduate and WWE Hall of Famer is still a proud resident of Memphis, TN. Since the 70s, the King has been piledriving, throwing fi re, and pulling down his strap in the Bluff City and around the globe.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE FIRST BIG MATCH OF YOUR CAREER?It would have to be the fi rst time I wrestled for the world championship in 1974, against Jack Brisco for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Th e fi rst time I won a world championship was in May of 1978 when I beat Mr Perfect Kurt Hennig for the AWA World Championship. But without a doubt, the biggest match that Ive ever had in my career was in 1983, and it wasnt against a wrestler. It was against a 150 pound comedian, Andy Kaufman.

HOW DID THE WHOLE ANDY KAUF-MAN THING START? WHY DID HE CHOOSE MEMPHIS?Andy was a huge wrestling fan growing up. He started wresting women at his comedy shows, and eventually wanted to take his act to a more appreciative audience. So, he went to New York and

talked to Vince McMahon Sr. about wrestling women in WWE. With wrestling being so secretive back then, McMahon thought mixing a Hollywood actor with wrestling would make people think all wrestlers were actors. So, he didnt go for it.

Fortunately, wrestling magazine editor Bill Apter overheard the conversation and directed Andy to Memphis. For weeks, Andy insulted the people of Memphis on TV and fought women at the Coliseum. I told him that his next step was to wrestle a man. So, I pitched him a scenario of a way he and I could wind up wrestling each other.

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR MATCH AGAINST KAUFMAN? Well, it wasnt much but a few piledriv-ers. But aft er that Andy just lay there on the mat motionless and, like, fi ve minutes went by and he was still there. Well, our fans were programmed not to leave until the wrestlers had left . So, I told Jerry Calhoun, the referee, to go over and tell

Andy that someone would come and help him up. Andy wouldnt move. He told Calhoun to call an ambulance. I tell Cal-houn to tell Andy it will cost 250 bucks to call an ambulance. Calhoun tells him and then comes back and says that Andy would pay for it. So we did, and he went to St. Francis and actually spent three days in traction.WOULD YOU SAY THE KAUFMAN STUFF WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMPHIS WRESTLING ANGLE EVER? It was without a doubt my favorite because it was the biggest thing to ever happen to wrestling. It made national news. Andy I were on the David Letterman show, it was on SNL. Immediately following that, Vince McMahon Sr. started bringing in celebrities like Cindy Lauper and Mr. T. Our match was so historic that it laid the groundwork for all the celebrity and Hollywood involvement in wrestling. A couple years ago, the thing we did on David Letterman got put in the National Museum of Radio and Television in Washington D.C. as one of the Top 100 Moments in the History of Television.

HOW MANY TITLES HAVE YOU WON? I have won more titles in my career than any other wrestler in history 126 titles.

HOW MANY TITLES HAS YOUR SOFT-BALL TEAM WON? My team, Lawlers Army, plays every Wednesday night. Last week, we got run-ruled. I dont know what happened. My guys are so tournament oriented. We did so-so in the league last year and then we won the city tournament. Th ats another good thing about being the King, a lot of the best soft ball players in the area want to play for you. Ive got guys that drive down from Somerville and out-of-state to come play on the team.

WHY DO YOU THINK WRESTLING HAS BEEN SO POPULAR IN MEMPHIS COMPARED TO OTHER PLACES IN THE COUNTRY? I think wrestling became the center of sports attention in Memphis for a period of time. Memphis was a city that didnt have other pro sports franchises. Professional wrestling was looked at by a lot of the citizens of Memphis as our pro sport.

Plus, we had a fabulous time slot on Saturday mornings at 11 oclock, hosted by two of the best wrestling hosts in the history of the business, Lance Russell and Dave Brown. Th e show was just so compelling and it wasnt me, it was the people before me Tojo Yamamoto, Jackie Fargo, Don and Al Green, the Interns, Sputnik Monroe and Billy Wicks. Th ere is a tradition of charismatic wrestlers that have come through Memphis. All the major stars came through Memphis at one time or another. Hulk Hogan started here. I cosigned for his fi rst car. Th e Rock started here on Channel 5 wrestling.

TELL US ABOUT JIMMY HART. Man, Jimmy went to Treadwell before I did. And he had this band called Th e Gentrys, which was huge the closest thing to the Beatles right here

in Memphis. Th ey knocked Th e Beatles off the charts back in 1965 with a song called Keep on Dancing. Aft er I got into wrestling in 74, a friend, Jim Blake put me together with Jim Dickinson at Ardent Studios to record a song and Jimmy Hart was there. Jimmy and I hung out cause we didnt drink and smoke and all the rest of the guys did. He had the charisma for it and he became my manager. Th e rest is history.

DO YOU SEE MEMPHIS WRESTLING EVER AGAIN HAVING THE SUCCESS IT HAD BEFORE? It is diffi cult now because society and times have changed so much. And the dominance of the WWE now. Th e main problem is getting the talent level we had before. Th e talent now wants to be seen on a worldwide stage. Th e WWE just got national TV in China and it is already on in India and all over Europe.

WHATS GOING ON WITH MEMPHIS WRESTLING RIGHT NOW? It has been in reruns because Clear Channel sold some stations and our CW30 was one of them. We were asked to go to reruns so they could show a better bottom line. Th ey were probably spending around $6,000 a week on the production of our show, and recouping the cost through sales. In the mean time, WWE decided to leave the CW and we are going to change as well. We are going to MyNetworkTV and back to Saturday mornings at 11 oclock. Th ey dont have a studio, but we are in talks with Southland Park about taping it there.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE WRESTLING MOVES OF ALL TIME, NOT INCLUDING THE PILEDRIVER? Th e standing dropkick.... the sleeper hold.... and the standing fi st drop.

WHY DO YOU DO THE FIST DROP OFF THE SECOND ROPE AND NOT THE TOP? Because off the top is too hard on my knees. If it was a big match, I would do it off the top rope. In thirty years plus years of doing that move almost every night, the only time Ive ever messed up my knee was in the match at AutoZone Park last year aft er doing my fi st drop off the second

rope. As soon as I hit it, my whole leg went numb.

HOW DO YOU LIKE WRESTLING AT AUTOZONE PARK? It was great last year. One of the last things Rick Ankiel did before he went to St. Louis was manage me and wave a baseball bat around. I think he even jumped off the top rope on someone. Th e next day he got called up to the Cardinals and started hitting all those home runs.

IF YOU COULD PILEDRIVE ANYONE RIGHT NOW WHO WOULD IT BE? George W. Bush.

DID YOU REALLY WANT TO BE MAYOR? When I started it was more or less a publicity stunt, but the more I became involved, the more serious it got... It was to the point where the week before the election I was thinking, holy crap, I could wake up in a week and be the mayor of the 18th largest city in the whole United States. What the heck am I doing here?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmLS3kQxEls

ARE YOU GOING TO RUN AGAIN? Oh, no. No

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED WITH JIM CARREY ON THE SET OF MAN ON THE MOON? Andy Kaufman was the nicest guy in the world... so respectful... loved wrestling. Jim Carrey was a big egotistical jerk. He thought he knew what Andy Kaufman was like, but he was way off base. Carrey was doing this method acting, living and channeling the character of Andy Kaufman. He was just being such a jerk to me on the set. I slapped him twice as hard as I slapped Andy.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN THE STORY BROKE THAT JERRY TATES SON WAS PLANNING TO ROB YOUR HOUSE? It was really weird. It wasnt so much that it was a celebritys son, but that it was a Memphis policeman. I found out about it aft er I had just landed in Buff alo, NY. I got a call from the FBI. I thought it was a

joke at fi rst. I called them back and they said they had arrested three Memphis policemen and a former girlfriend of mine who were planning to break into my house that day to get money they thought was in my jukebox.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY KEEP IN YOUR JUKEBOX? CDs. Not the kind you cash in at the bank. Compact discs.

WHEN DOES THE JERRY LAWLER SHOW COME OUT ON DVD? Th ats a good question. Were working on that. We had fi ve good seasons.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH3usmMSnnw

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COMMER-CIAL THAT YOUVE BEEN IN? Dunns Transmissions. Th e one when I push a guys car and it goes all the way to the Dunns Transmissions. At the end of the commercial, it is me standing there with with Danny Dunn and the driver from the car with hair sticking straight up.

WHAT ABOUT THE FIREWORKS CITY COMMERCIAL? Yea, the Oh no! I hate this part where I always explode on the rocket. Th ats a good one too. OK, its a tie.

WHEN EDDIE GILBERT RAN OVER YOU IN THE TV-5 PARKING LOT WAS THAT THE WORST CAR ACCIDENT YOU HAVE EVER BEEN IN? Well, it was the worst work-related accident. One time, I actually had a car wreck with a 75 year old plumber and was sued by his wife for loss of consortium.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqklcni4vPo

WHOS YOUR FAVORITE WEATHERMAN NEVER TO CALL WRESTLING? Well, it certainly wouldnt be that #@%# Al Roker. Th e dream of my life was to be in the Macys Th anksgiving Day Parade. So, a couple years ago, they call me up and the WWE is having a fl oat and they are going to let me be on the fl oat with Vince McMahon, Trish S
