This exhibition has been made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Bison: American

Icon was organized by the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana.

The National Endowment for the Humanities presents

An NEH on the Road Exhibition

Jan 28 – May 25, 2012Few animals conjure the power and symbolic

presence of the North American bison. Whether painted on a tipi or an artist’s canvas, minted on a nickel, or seen grazing at Shelby Farms

and Yellowstone National Park, the image of the bison stirs in us deep loyalties to the North

American landscape. Wild and fundamental, the bison is a familiar part of our shared heritage.

The Bison: American Icon explores the meaning and significance of this iconic creature for the Plains Indian culture of the 1800s through the

commercial and national symbol of the present. Along the way, The Bison charts the dramatic

changes that occured to the creature and its habitat, and to the people who depended upon it for daily existence. The exhibition also illuminates

the human response that eventually led to the bison’s preservation as a species and a symbol

in the twentieth century. The Bison includes Plains Indian artifacts, contemporary Native American

art, popular culture items, small models and sculptures, and some natural history materials.

In association with The Field Museum, Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Beginning with the 2006 exhibit One Day Is Not Enough: Memphis Desegregation Through the Lens of Ernest Withers, the Collections Department at the Pink Palace has curated a series of exhibits exploring the many and varied roles African Americans have played in the history, culture, science and politics of the Mid-South. With the new exhibit Women of Strength, Women of Color, which opened mid-February, Museum scientists and researchers continue the New Connections series, endeavoring to tell the full story of our dynamic community.

Curator of History Jestein Gibson spearheaded the collecting, research and writing of the exhibit, securing artifacts and stories from a diverse crew of important African American women, many included in New Connections for the first time. Among those whose personal effects are on display for the first time are Frances Smith, activist and spouse of Dr. Benjamin Hooks; Maxine Smith, 2003 recipient of the National Civil Rights Museum’s Freedom Award and important Civil Rights leader; writer and professor Dr. Miriam DeCosta-Willis (pictured left); and Claudine Penn, Memphis’ first African American policewoman.

Louella Weaver, Manager of Collections, sees the New Connections series as a path toward a more inclusive picture of the city’s history as the Museum moves forward. “I would prefer to see us explore the history of Memphis, and not its Black History and White History and Jewish History, parceled out,” says Weaver. “African-Americans make up half of the population of the region, and more than half of Memphis. All people are equally important to the story of who we are.”

Power

Thinking over what we have to offer you in the next few months, I realized it’s all about power.

Powerful weather. Powerful people. Powerful animals.

Tornadoes unleash amazing power. They really can turn our world upside down. So, we try to understand it. Some people try so hard they will even drive right into one. Well, not exactly some people. More like one person—Sean Casey who drives the Tornado Interceptor Vehicle (TIV 2). Sean and the TIV 2 are not only in the movie, they will be here at the PinkPalace March 1-3. The 16,500 pound vehicle comes with the usual standard equipment: 3/8” aluminum plating, 6 hydraulic flaps, a hydraulic lowering device, a self-leveling suspension, 4 hydraulic drop down skirts, and two 2 stabilizing spikes. No cup holders, though. Casey wants to make sure the folks inside are focused on the weather. There are powerful people portrayed in our Women of Strength, Women of Color exhibit. This is the eighth Connections exhibit we have done as part of our initiative to be better “connected” to the African American community, and to better grow our collection of African American artifacts. This exhibit features a group of amazing people ranging from journalist Ida B. Wells to athlete Rochelle Stephens and many others. All had or have powerful determination and drive.

In addition, our exhibit, The Bison: American Icon continues and will be followed shortly by Bigger Than T-Rex: Giant Killer Dinosaurs of Argentina. Q.E.D.

Frances Bacon is supposed to have said, “Knowledge is power.” It would appear he didn’t say exactly that, but it is telling that the phrase and the attribution have stuck around. So, I think there is truth in it no matter who said or didn’t say it. Knowledge, whether scientific or historical is power, the power to understand the world better. I hope you will visit us soon and experience these powerful programs.

Steve Pike, Director of Museums

With your help, this year as in years past, the Pink Palace Family of Museums will continue to provide unique and inspiring educational experiences to our area school children – many of them at no cost to the students. All student experiences are subsidized at approximately $10 per student.
