Chip population is indication for # of ranks
• Double-sided Modules are either single, dual or quad rank
• Single-sided Modules can theoretically be dual rank, but
you don’t see this in the market unless chips are placed
above each other.

• Dynamic RAM needs many refreshes/sec
– recharges do consume power, especially in large memory footprint scenarios
– With low-power CPUs, the power budget may be even up for CPU and memory!
• DDR3L = Low voltage is specified as 1.35V by JEDEC
– Modules are classified as PC3L-xxx
• Kingston DDR3L modules support dual-voltage 1.35V / 1.5V
– Currently there is no extra charge for LV DIMMs, savings are for free!
• Supported on current and next-gen server platforms
– Intel Sandy Bridge (Xeon E3 Series)
– Intel Westmere-EP/Romley-EP (Xeon 5600/E5 2600 and 2400 Series)
– Intel Westmere-EX (Xeon E7 Series)
• Also available in Very Low Profile (~17mm) height, Suffix “VLP”
DDR3U (1.25V)

1GB SR SR n.a.
2GB SR or DR SR or DR n.a.
4GB SR, DR or QR SR, DR or QR n.a.
8GB DR DR or QR n.a.
16GB n.a. DR or QR Available
32GB n.a. n.a. Available
SR = Single rank
DR = Dual rank
QR = Quad rank
Ranks = Loads on memory bus (72-bit wide rows = 64 data + 8 ECC bits)
LR-DIMM Technology
• Similar to FB-DIMMs a few years ago, in LR-DIMMs an extra chip works as interface
between memory controller of the CPU and the memory chips on the module.
• It doesn’t matter how memory chips are organized from a CPU standpoint and
enables higher capacities with no “rank limitation”, at higher frequencies when
compared to quad rank.
• There is no frequency drop when populating all sockets, but LR DIMMs are more
expensive, of course
