Ruth Adams1923-2019

Ruth Mullis Adams died quietly Aug. 4 in Rochester, Minn., at the venerable age of 96.

She was born July 13, 1923. A child during the Great Depression, Ruth (along with her three sisters) lost her father Frank (Pat) Mullis in 1929 when he died in an accident while working on the railroad.

Ruth and her sisters (Gayle, Doris and Joy) were raised by their widowed mother, Lily, in Grand Forks, N.D.

Ruth and Gayle spent their high school years away from home with their Aunt Edna and Uncle Dick (Hendrickson) in Great Falls, Mont. In 1941, following high school graduation, Ruth returned to Grand Forks to attend the University of North Dakota.

After college, Ruth had a variety of jobs as a young social worker. She worked for the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and Hot Springs, Ark., where she assisted in providing rehabilitation for returning soldiers.

In late 1949, Ruth took a job with the Welfare Department in Cheyenne. It was there that she met her husband-to-be, “Friendly” Bob Adams, on temporary assignment for his Denver-based employer. Bob recalled his “love at first sight,” and Ruth, undoubtedly, remembered it differently.

Ruth and Bob were married on the Bride and Groom Show in Los Angeles in March 1950. Within the next six years, Ruth and Bob became the parents of Marta, Bobby and Andi.

A study in contrasts, Ruth and Bob agreed on very little. What they did agree on was their dedication to their children and the importance of education for all children.

Ruth and Bob enjoyed a 54-year marriage until his death in 2004.

Ruth will be remembered by her loved ones for her honesty, integrity, eye for beauty and devotion to her family. She enjoyed music, art, history (especially British), travel, dogs, crossword puzzles, interminable Scrabble games and playing the slots.

Although a reliable homebody, Ruth was also a career woman, starting out as a social worker and later becoming a teacher. Ruth taught kindergarten for 22 years at Buffalo Ridge Elementary School in Cheyenne.

She leaves behind her three children, Dr. Andrea Adams (Dr. O. E. Millhouse) of Rochester, Minn., Dr. Robert Adams (Evie Diakakis Adams) of Ogden, Utah, and Marta Adams of Carson City, Nev.; as well as

her grandsons, Carson Adams Thomas and Colter Adams Thomas.

Ruth was our beloved mother and grandmother. Losing her has left us heartbroken, but determined to live our lives fully in her example, with grace, humility and gratitude. May she rest in peace.

Paul Liamos1925-2019

Paul T. Liamos hoped to top his father’s 94-year lifespan. Alas, he fell a few months short. He shuffled off mortal coils at 6 a.m. Aug. 27 in the hospice unit at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cheyenne.

Death was welcome; surcease of pain as well as the lingering loneliness, isolation and indignities inflicted by Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born Dec. 10, 1925, in Neihart, Mont., to Paul T. Liamos Sr. and Lucille J. Erickson; he was their only child.

For the most part and from a tender age, he was raised by his devoted father who was a somewhat peripatetic chef, but generally limited his wanderings to northeast

Wyoming and western South Dakota.Home for Paul came to be hotel rooms

and homes of friends, mostly Greek, who helped raise him. Things stabilized in Newcastle, where he attended high school. He was a gifted student, good athlete and regular participant in student government and social affairs. Then came World War II.

Paul finished high school a year early so he could enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps at 17 years of age. Like most Marines, he was assigned to the Pacific theater. For almost two years, he fought with the 4th Regiment of the 6th Marine Division. It was an island-hopping battlefield; three times he was in the first wave of Marine operations.

His last wartime posting was to Okinawa as part of the expeditionary force charged with establishing a stronghold from which an invasion of Japan could be launched. The campaign was a bloody one.

As with so many other Marines, Paul (then 19) was shot in combat for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. By the time he recovered from his wounds, the war was over and he became part of the occupying forces in Japan.

Like other survivors of bloody battles, he quietly suffered the memories of lost comrades. But some close lifetime friendships with Marine buddies transcended time and place. Though they were scattered about the United States, their reunions, correspondence and frequent conversations were a source of comfort and pride. Among the closest, “Scarbelly” Vana passed March 29, 2016; “Hogleg” Barr on Feb. 10, 2019. “Whitey” Liamos was left, alone.

Upon discharge from the military in 1946, Paul returned to Newcastle where, on Aug. 26, 1947 (72 years and 1 day before his death), he married Wanda Boulden, a ranch girl he had known since the eighth grade. Shortly after they began their life together, Paul started his studies at the University of Wyoming, where he earned undergraduate and law degrees.

He practiced law in Newcastle and Cheyenne and eventually became a district judge in Northeast Wyoming. He was ambitious, enthusiastic and dedicated, with a prodigious work ethic. He routinely worked well into the night and almost all weekends.

When he wasn’t working at the courthouse, he was walking, for miles and miles, often carrying two large, heavy case folders. Over the years he tried cases in almost every county in Wyoming. He was often the “clean up” judge, disposing of aging cases allowed by others to linger on the docket. He finished his career in law (at age 86) as the librarian for the Wyoming branch of the law library of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit.

Paul was a gregarious, social person, a hale fellow, well met. But his friendly nature

was genuine, never manipulative. He liked people and as some would say, “he never met a stranger.”

He was ever there with a smile, a story, a joke, or words of encouragement, and he was famously generous. He quietly contributed to many charities, public and private.

His private charities were often forlorn individuals down on their luck; he would slip them money or help pay their bills. He seemed unable to pass a person in need without offering help. And he was a notoriously extravagant tipper, especially to waitresses. Most of them at his favorite haunts knew and called him by name – “Judge” – and all were aware of his reputation for good-natured, innocent teasing and lavish tipping. It didn’t end there.

He was a treat machine for every dog or cat that might come under his gaze and he regularly contributed to animal shelters. All in all, he was a good, kind man.

Paul had no siblings and outlived both his parents, collateral relatives and most of his close friends. His father passed Aug. 9, 1987, |and is buried at Black Hills National (Veterans) Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. His mother, Lucille J. Erickson Ryder passed Dec. 6, 1993. She is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, S.D.

In lieu of flowers or donations, please leave a generous tip for a server (deserved or not), tell someone a joke, entertain a friend with a story or flash a smile to a stranger. In doing so, conjure the visage of a truly decent human being; one worthy of respect, even admiration: Paul T. Liamos.

William Perrigo1948-2019

William L. (Bill) Perrigo, 71, peacefully passed away Sept. 4 at his home in Cheyenne.

Bill was born June 4, 1948, in Billings, Mont., to Arch and Betty (Erickson) Perrigo, the oldest of three children. After growing up in Laurel, he served in the U.S. Army, infantry. On Sept. 5, 1970, he married Donna Bernhardt (now former spouse). In their early military years, they explored many corners of the world and settled in Rapid City, S.D., where their children grew up.

Bill loved camping and fishing in Montana, the Black Hills of South Dakota and Alaska. He tied his own flies and was known for his kind and gentle heart, and for many, that was the first thing they said about Bill. He was a kind man. He was great at card games and was often accused of cheating – probably because he was the scorekeeper. He loved animals and, on more occasions than can be counted, tried to call animals that do not come when called by whistling as if to call a dog – ducks, turtles, fish, you name it. He loved every sci-fi movie that ever was made. Luke Skywalker, James T. Kirk and Lieutenant Starbuck were regulars in the Perrigo household. He was a man of faith and loved to sing in the choir. He loved that sunsets are blue and orange – “because God is a Denver Broncos fan.”

He will be known best of all for being a Papa. It was the most important thing to him on this earth and he was so proud of his grandchildren and grandpuppies. He kept track of every soccer game, band concert and gymnastics meet and knew all the stats on the opposing team. He was the loud grandpa on the sidelines.

He spent the past four years in Cheyenne

where he dedicated his time volunteering and serving on the board of directors for Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne. It was his passion. It was more than delivering a meal – he learned the clients’ stories, knew their struggles and valued them.

Bill is survived by his children: Erin (Shawn) of Cheyenne and their children, Byson, Ava and Slade; Allison (Jon) of Anchorage, Alaska, and their girls, Emelia and Evelyn; and Zachary (Missy) of Aberdeen, S.D., and their girls, Halle, Sarah and Lexi. He is also survived by his former wife, Donna Perrigo; and two brothers, John and Tom Perrigo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Betty; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne, 2015 S. Greeley Highway, Cheyenne, WY 82007 . . . and hug your Papa.

Paula Starks1949-2019

Paula Colleen Starks, 69, passed away Sept. 14.

Paula was born Nov. 15, 1949, in Indianapolis to Jack Thomas and Ramona Orlene Mitchell.

The daughter of a U.S. Navy man, Paula moved on to Kansas and graduated from high school in Colorado. She graduated from Emporia State College and began her teaching career in Sharon Springs, Kan., where she met fellow teacher, Michael E. Starks. They were married Dec. 27, 1975, in Rifle, Colo.

She was not only a wife but a partner. She supported Michael in everything he did and could always be found at his side when needed. Paula was independent and strong and ran her home with ease. If Michael was on the road, or if he was home, her family knew their refuge was safe. She was the manager of the family, and her family was her heart.

Her greatest joy was becoming a mother to her two daughters, Jessica and Marie. She was happiest when she was with them, whether it was when she took them

to school, went shopping with them or planned their weddings, it was the time they shared that she most cherished. A simple outing to the Bundt store was a cause for laughing and celebration. Her family enjoyed hearing her laugh and her quick wit. When her heart knew that her grandchildren needed a loving home, she welcomed them with open arms. Though there were days she was tired, she never questioned her commitment nor her decision.

Paula was known to all her friends as a problem solver. Be it a garment to create, a tear to be sewn or food to be prepared, Paula was truly a reliable friend. Paula loved to go out with friends. She loved luncheons, shopping or a night out for dinner. Music and theater were a big part of her life, and a chance to see “Wicked” or “Book of Mormon” was not to be missed. She enjoyed singing at church and was invited to sing for all occasions.

Paula is survived by her loving husband, Michael; daughters, Marie (James) Castleberry and Jessica Starks; grandchildren, Orlene Brown and Shawn Heinrich; brother, Orley (Thea) Mitchell; sister, Georgia (Steve) Carter; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family requests donations be made to Holy Trinity Education Fund.

Angela Dougherty1969-2019

Angela C. Dougherty, 50, passed away suddenly Sept. 13 at Swedish Medical Center in Denver as a result of a brain aneurysm.

She was born Sept. 7, 1969, in Kemmerer. She graduated from high school in Kemmerer and moved to Laramie. In 1999, Angela obtained her law degree from the University of Wyoming and moved to Cheyenne.

Angela had a distinguished career at the attorney general’s office, representing profession licensing boards at the Laramie County and Campbell County District Attorney offices, and in private practice. She argued numerous cases in front of the Wyoming Supreme Court with great success, notably winning a landmark case. Angela’s life was dedicated to the pursuit of justice, and advocating for those who did not have a voice, especially victims of domestic violence. Her zeal and passion fueled her to work tirelessly for the system and principles in which she believed.

There was no better daughter than Angela. She and Darlene were constant companions. They traveled together and routinely returned to Kemmerer, a place loved by both. Any friend of Angela’s quickly became a friend of Darlene’s. As Darlene’s health declined, Angela cared for her with kindness, patience and compassion. Darlene will miss her terribly.

With her quick wit and infectious laugh, Angela was a joy to be around. She was funny, passionate and full of life. But her best quality was her fierce loyalty to those she loved. Her lifelong friendships never wavered. A friend could always count on Angela to commiserate in bad times and celebrate in good times. Her death leaves a shadow over all of our hearts.

Though taken too young, Angela’s last

days were good days spent celebrating her 50th birthday with friends and family, doing the work she loved with people she loved, and filled with hope and excitement about the future. She will be sorely missed.

Angela is survived by her beloved mother, Darlene Dougherty; her sisters, Dr. Kelly Phipps and Ashley Dougherty; her aunt, Roberta Johnson; two nieces; a nephew; numerous cousins; and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Dougherty.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Angela’s memory to the University of Wyoming Foundation, 222 S. 22nd St., Laramie, WY 82070.
