APRIL 2018It All Starts with the Crossby Dr. Jody Bowser, Senior Pastor

Memory Care Workshop P.11 • New Wednesday Night Bible Study: Proverbs P. 17

MESSENGERIt all starts with the cross. I don’t mean that human history

started with the cross or that God’s Upper Story started with the cross. There were thousands of years (obviously) of very important history that came before Jesus died on the cross.

When I say that it all starts with the cross, I’m talking about us. I’m talking about our lives, our struggles, our marriages and our hope. I’m talking about today.

How many of you want to find joy in your life? It all starts with the cross. How many of you long to experience deep and satisfying love? It all starts with the cross. How many of you crave the power to overcome addictions or encounter healing in your marriage or long for the taste of true peace? It all starts with the cross.

You see, the cross isn’t just a historical fact that occurred 2,000 years ago when Jesus was hung on a wooden pole in Jerusalem. The cross is a daily reality and a transforming experience. The Apostle Paul states in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” The cross is ground zero of the gospel.

When we place our faith in Jesus, when we come to Him in prayer,

when we trust what Jesus did for us on the

cross, we receive the power to go on when it

feels impossible.

Without the cross, there is no gospel. There is no good news. The good news can be boiled down to the simple truth that Jesus took our sin upon Himself and bore upon Himself the punishment for all of our sins. He died in our place. And His death on the cross LITERALLY produces POWER in our lives to transform and change us.

I was recently reading an article by actors Kirk and Chelsea Cameron, describing the struggles that they’ve experienced in their marriage. They were asked what has made their “Hollywood marriage” work and they didn’t sugar-coat anything. There was a time when things weren’t going well at all. Chelsea described how she started keeping a record of how Kirk had wronged her and how she began keeping a list of what she called “the majors” and “the minors.” She said that it was like a wall that came up between them and she knew that if they didn’t figure it out, they weren’t going to finish.

Kirk then said this…It comes down to one thing: the cross.

That’s the secret weapon to defeating the sin in your marriage, or in your life and defending your relationship. It’s the cross, having an attitude of humility and repentance and saying, ‘God, I have sinned against you. Would you please forgive me? You died to pay the price for my sin because I couldn’t pay that big of a price. I deserve hell and you’re offering me for-giveness.

When you go to the cross, you see a picture of all the love that you need to show to your spouse. You receive power to do it when it feels impossible. How do you love your wife when she is just so cold and bitter and removed and how do you love her when you feel nothing? Or how do you love your husband when he’s hurt you, when he’s broken your trust, shattered your heart?

You do it the same way Christ loved

you when you were unlovable and not worthy of His love. The cross.

I want you to take note of the fact that these words aren’t coming out of a theology textbook. This is written by a husband and wife who were, by their own admission, headed toward the divorce court. When we place our faith in Jesus, when we come to Him in prayer, when we trust what Jesus did for us on the cross, we receive the power to go on when it feels impossible.

As we celebrate Easter once again this year, I want to encourage you to open up your heart in a new way to the supernatural, transformational power of the cross. Come to Jesus with humility and repentance. Truly believe that the power that raised Jesus from the dead can enable you to defeat the sin in your marriage or in your life.

Board of Administration Meeting Highlights

The Board of Administration met on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, in the Admin-istrative Office Conference Room. Chairman Glenn Watson called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Penny Poorman opened the meeting with devotions and prayer. Following are highlights from this meeting:

Senior Pastor's Report:Pastor Jody Bowser described his feeling of

celebration as he observes many accomplishing our church mission and living out our values. During a recent Sunday service, 11 people joined in partnership with the church not only to be members, but to walk in obedience in prayer and learning, celebrate in public worship, give to the church, join a small group and be accountable to one another. As they prepare to serve, they will be seeking every opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ. He spoke of his excitement for the growth of the Once More Ministries as they add more volunteers and serve more people in our community. There

are seven opportunities to worship on Easter. There will be one service on Saturday in the Baker Center and six services on Easter Sunday at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00. Pastor Jody reported he will be entering a week of study beginning on March 15.

Executive Pastor's Report:Pastor Don Baker announced that the

search for the Worship Associate is ongoing. He asked that we pray that God brings the right person for that job. He noted the plans for the upcoming Maundy Thursday service on March 29 at 6:00 in the Sanctuary. There will be a church survey coming soon that will be helpful in indicating momentum and clarity for the leadership. Pastor Don encouraged all to be in prayer for marriages and families within our church.

Elders’ Report:Pastor Jody Bowser expressed his excitement

on the momentum in articulating our mission by the elders. He announced the addition of seven members being invited to share their thoughts in articulating a ten year vision state-ment. He described this statement as mentally charging for us to keep us on task.

Co-mission Reports: • Adult Ministries – Andrea Adams shared that

Men to Mend had a pizza party on March 7 to thank 25 volunteers who served to complete 22 projects. The group served 11 widows.

• Children’s Ministry – Sue Washabaugh described the Daddy Daughter Date Night as awesome. There were over 100 daughters in attendance with their fathers and grandfathers. Sue noted that Becky Hann and her team spent many hours to make this event special.

outlined items of interest on the Financial Summary for the month of March. He noted that they continue to monitor weekly average giving.

• Local Outreach – Tom Knepper announced that Cheryl Young is the vice chairperson for the co-mission. He described the ongoing discussion by the co-mission on their quar-terly meetings and how they could improve on them. The co-mission has made plans to conduct the meeting in such a way to assure there is time for praise and prayer. Tom noted that they are planning to invite more organi-zations to Bless Week in the upcoming year.

• Missions – Alyssa Heberlig reported on items discussed during the Missions Co-mis-sion meeting. Justin Sollenberger was elected as vice chairman of the co-mission. Rodney Mose gave an update on the exploratory trip to Haiti in January. They visited several churches in the Cayes area that were damaged during Hurricane Matthew in 2016. He shared that the Barnabas Team would like to assist the churches in Deveriell and Laurent by replacing the roofs destroyed by the storm. The co-mis-sion has given permission for the gathering of cost estimates for the construction of the roofs. Rodney also outlined the possibility of future partnering with the church in Laurent where there is land available to construct a new church and a school. The co-mission is supportive of the team’s proposals to assist with repairs and explore the possibility of a long-term partnership with the church at Laurent.Pastor Jay Brown was in attendance to add details for such a project and answer questions.

• Personnel Relations – Kim Shatzer reported on the ongoing search for a Worship Associate. There are 13 applicants and they are expect-ing more. As Easter services are approaching, Nate Hann will be using Matt Gish to cover some of the duties. Nate has some people lined up to conduct all areas of the services. Del Martin has started his custodial posi-tion. The Student Ministry and Worship Arts

are continuing work on choosing interns. • Property – On behalf of the Property Com-

mission, Jim Goetz presented six motions which were all approved. A staff member must be on site when the haze machine is in use in the Baker Center and the staff member must text the Facilities Manager when the alarm system is by-passed and when it is re-activated. The staff may seek bids to replace the Baker Center leaking roof. The lighting on the steeple and in the ministry center parking lot may be upgraded. Preparation for a conceptual plan and cost esti-mates for the demolition of the old office build-ing and construction of the parking area on that site may begin. Finalizing conceptual drawings and getting estimated costs for putting a roof over the courtyard to create usable space may begin. Ken Adams has authorization to begin conversations with land owners in the neigh-borhood about additional parking options.

• Student Ministry – Penny Poorman stated that the co-mission is looking at two Student Ministry interns. She announced the plans for a Night of Peeps to take place as an out-reach for students to bring their friends. On April 4 Senior Celebration Night will take place. Penny shared that the co-mis-sion is taking applications for mission proj-ects in Haiti and the Chambersburg Project.

• Worship Arts – Bryce Mentzer has volun-teered to take the lead on a photography min-istry. King Street Church has a Roku app that just went live and work is being done to get Apple TV up and running. This is just another example of how we can leverage technology to help spread the message of the Gospel. The Visual Arts Committee plans to display featured artists’ pieces in the front hallway on a rotating basis. The equipment inventory requested by the Board of Administration is ongoing. Stephen Flint and Carolyn Che-naille reported on the progress of the search committee for a new Worship Associate.

Administrative Report:Ken Adams announced that eight people

have taken advantage of the vision/dental plan offered to them at their cost. Ken shared that there were many thank you notes from the parents of the participants of Night to Shine.

New Business:Jim Goetz was elected vice chairman of the

Board of Administration.(These highlights are taken from minutes

written by Karen Byers, Recording Secretary for the Board of Administration. Board meetings are open to members of King Street Church. Unabridged copies of the minutes from the March meeting will be available at the church office after they are approved at the next meeting.)

Welcome to the Prayer Roomby Nancy FritzPrayer Ministry

A few years ago a lady at church asked me which Sunday school class I attend. I said, “I don’t go to a Sunday school class.” As she raised her eyebrows a bit, I said, “I’m in the Prayer Room on Sunday mornings.” “The prayer Room?” she said quizzically.

“Yes , we try to have one or more persons in the Prayer Room during every worship service.”

“What do they do?” she asked. “They pray,” I said. She was obviously puzzled, so I continued.

“God gives us many ways to learn, grow and serve Him. Two primary ways are to read and study His Word and talk to Him in prayer. On Sunday mornings at KSC, we’re learning to do both at the same time.”

“How does that work?” she asked.“While people are in worship or Sunday

school, others are in the Prayer Room, asking God to oversee everything that’s taking place. Those who are praying certainly don’t know

every person or every need they may have, but God does! So in the Prayer Room people pray about many things—pastor’s message, Sunday school class teachers, etc. They also pray for requests that come to us on a weekly prayer sheet.”

The lady asked, “You pray for anyone?” “Yes, we pray for anyone. The Bible tells us

to pray about everything! The more our hearts

Right now more people are needed in the Prayer Room on Sunday mornings. So if the Holy Spirit nudges you to consider participating in the Prayer Ministry, we would love to talk to you.

are focused on God’s presence, His power and His promises, the more we learn and the more God is glorified!”

By this time the lady looked as though she’d heard enough. I thanked her and told her she was welcome in the Prayer Room anytime.

Perhaps you’re a newcomer at KSC or the idea of a Prayer Room is foreign to you. No need to be embarrassed. God is at work! Every ministry is designed to point people to God and His Word. Regardless of age group, format, curriculum, leader, number of people involved, etc. every area needs to be bathed in prayer.

Right now more people are needed in the Prayer Room on Sunday mornings. So if the Holy Spirit nudges you to consider participating in the Prayer Ministry, we would love to talk to you.

We plan to have another article on this topic in the May Messenger. In the meantime please give some consideration and thought to the blueprint God designed—the one that shows serving, praying and walking hand in hand with Him to further His kingdom and bring Him Glory.

Spotlight on Staff: Adam Keathby Rose ZookPersonnel Relations Co-mission Member

Adam Keath joined the King Street team in February of this year and is serving as our Director of Restoration and Recovery Minis-tries. Adam was born and has spent much of his life in the Chambersburg area and he and his family have been attending King Street for six years.

He tells me that his role on staff basically says, “We want to help!” There is a tremendous

Melanie and Adam Keath

amount of hidden brokenness in our church community and his position was developed to help bring that brokenness to light and to walk the journey alongside those who are seeking help and restoration. “We need to recognize that all of us are broken and have messes in our lives. Those messes can oftentimes snowball unless we can find a safe haven in which we are comfortable reaching out and asking for help.”

Adam’s new position allows him the oppor-tunity to create that safe haven environment for the broken person or someone close to them so that they are willing to ask for help

and allow the brokenness to come to light so that lives may be restored. Since he began his new role, Adam has been blessed to hear many testimonies of healing from members of the congregation. He has also heard cries for help from those who are in need of God’s healing touch. Adam shared this thought: “It has also been a pleasure to be a part of a staff team that is seeking the Lord on behalf of the people of the church and discerning strategic vision from the Holy Spirit regarding our direction in engaging and blessing our community with the gospel.”

One of the biggest challenges for Adam as he fleshes out his new role is building a culture where recovery and restoration aren’t attached to a stigma … moving past shame in getting help. “We are all “eligible” for recovery and we all have need for restoration in our lives.”

Adam met his wife Melanie (“who is beau-tiful inside and out”) in Colorado Springs and fell in love in State College when they were both ministering at PSU with The Navigators. They have been married for 13 years and have four sons: Aaron is 12, Owen and Enoch are 11 and Cooper is 9. (If you have a chance, ask him to tell you the story about his boys and how they came to be part of his family!) “These days, our kids’ interests are our interests.” Adams shared they do a lot of sports—ice hockey, basketball and baseball. Any spare time is spent traveling, enjoying time outdoors, visiting different cities (and pretending they are locals) and watching TV.

Adam and Melanie serve in the College Age Sunday School Class and occasionally attend Feet to Faith. He is involved in Restoration and Recovery, Thailand, Orphan Care and Adop-tion and College ministries. Given an infinite amount of money and volunteer resources, Adam would like to see our recovery program celebrated as a part of the worship life of our church and known as such in our community and for our church family to worship, grow, heal, confess, and fellowship, leading people to meet Jesus. In terms of restoration, he hopes that King Street can become known as a safe

7

place to reach out and get help … for marriages, broken families, strained relationships, prodigal children, conflict resolution—and seeing our body of Christ loving and helping one another very, very well. If you see Adam in the hallway, stop and introduce yourself—you never know where the conversation may lead!

Once More Ministries Report

The distribution in March for OMM served 177 households for a total of 708 individuals with prayer requests for 144 households.

Thanks to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ being shared by you and the volunteers, the March distribution was another huge bless-ing for our community.

While OMM is a toiletry ministry, sup-plying necessary items to our neighbors, our primary goal is to build relationships and introduce Jesus to them. Through your extremely generous donations the volun-teers at OMM continue to touch many families. Thank you for supporting us as we reach out to these brothers and sisters.

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had” Acts 4:32.

Please continue to pray for this ministry and the volunteers that we may reach out and touch our neighbors so they too may know the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God,OMM Volunteers

Jesus calls his followers to publicly declare their faith through baptism. The next opportunity at King Street will be Sunday, April 29. In order to participate you must attend one of the preparation classes being held on April 8 and 15, at 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or noon in M17.

On Friday, March 9, nearly 200 daughters and their fathers or father-figures gathered in the Baker Center for Ties and Tiaras: a Daddy/Daughter Date Night. Throughout the evening they enjoyed good food, candy, treats, a photo booth, music and dancing, a message from Pastor Jody, the receiving of tiaras and a very special

time where the fathers prayed over their daughters. Dads received a booklet with ideas for other dates they could have with their daughters over the coming year. A large poster on the stage declared truths from Scripture such as “you are beautiful” (Psalm 45:11), “you are chosen” (John 15:16) and “you were created for a purpose” (Jeremiah 29:11). As they received affirmation from their earthly fathers, each girl was also being told that they are even more precious to their Father above.

This event was an oppor-tunity for the young ladies to have fun, to learn more vividly how they

should expect to be treated, and to see just how special they are in the eyes of their fathers. It was also a night to celebrate godly men and the great influence they have in the lives of the young women in their homes. What a powerful moment it was when each man lifted up his girl to our Heavenly Father in prayer! Thanks to all those who participated, and helped to make this night a success. We pray that the bond between daughters and their fathers or father-figures was strengthened and will continue to deepen with each passing day.

Greetings to my fellow book lovers. The first day of spring was a wonderful day to curl up with a good book and watch it snow! With the recent passing of Billy Graham, I wanted to encourage you to peruse

the many books we have in our library either written by or about him. The earliest published book we have (1964) is entitled World Aflame and reviewers agree it could have been written today. The truths contained in the book are timeless. Pastor Ron Cook agrees, “It’s a really good book!” Other titles available are: Answers to Life’s Problems, Storm Warning, Hope for the Troubled Heart, The Secret of Happiness, Billy Graham Answers Your Questions and the most recent one which was written in 2015, Where I Am: Heaven, Eternity and Our Life Beyond. We also have several copies of Just As I Am: The Autobiography of Billy Graham that was published in 1997. Pastor Ron Cook also highly recommends this book and says it has lots of history about the many crusades he conducted all over the world.

For a complete listing of not only his books, but all those in our library (now over 4000), visit www.librarything.com with user name: kingstreetchurch and the password: k1ngstr33t, both all lower case. Have fun and explore! Or if you have time, visit our library on the lower level of the Baker Center. We also have a chil-dren’s section available with books and DVDs like Veggie Tales. Come on down and check it out!!

NEW SUNDAY MORNING WOMEN’S STUDY

Why Her?Six Truths We Need to Hear

When Measuring Up Leaves Us Falling Behind

Friends in Faith Sunday School Class (M1), Beginning April 8

The ladies in the Friends in Faith Sunday School Class are about to begin a new study and you’re invited! Deb MacAskill will be leading this women’s group as they look at “Why Her?” by Nikki Koziarz.

Description:If success is defined in the eye of the

beholder, who are you letting behold your success? Nicki Koziarz is confronting the com-parison question: Why her?

Through two striving sisters in the Bible, Nicki uncovered six truths we need to hear when trying to measure up leaves you falling behind. These six truths will help you:

· Stop staring at her success and find satisfac-tion in yours.

· Find contentment with your life without being complacent in who you are becoming.

· Gain godly wisdom to answer the Why Her silent question of your soul.

Someone will always be ahead. But that doesn’t mean you’re behind. Because Truth, like always, will set us free. And free women don’t have to measure up to anybody. Not even her.

New Wednesday Night Bible Study:

PROVERBS7–8:30 p.m., April 11–June 27

On April 11 Buck Summers will begin teaching a new class on the book of Prov-erbs. This study will explore what “to fear the Lord” means, how to be wise and live in obedience to God’s instruction, how to learn to trust God completely and more. Anyone is welcome. The class meets in M4.

EXCERPTS FROM RECENT COMMUNICATIONS

Emily SchoenleberMarch 2, 2018(Serving in New Zealand with Youth With A Mission)

What’s a Typical Day Like? I usually work Monday to Friday and my

days are basically split between YWAM and helping with OneVoice. In the mornings I do various sorts of administrative work relating to OneVoice—drafting emails, managing our social media, finding volunteers to help with our city-wide church gatherings, putting up posters, etc. There are only about four of us who organize these gatherings, so there always seem to be new jobs that pop up.

My afternoons are always spent out at the YWAM base. Each day I get about five to ten students and we chat a bit about what they learned in lectures, what God has been teaching them, etc. Then we break up into smaller groups to clean the base, exciting right? But this is definitely necessary when there are about 100 people living in one place. Everyday for a couple hours I oversee the cleaning of bathrooms, hallways, lounge areas, sweeping outside, etc. I really enjoy being able to spend time with the students, even if it’s not the most fun job.

MISSIONS NEWS

October DTS GraduationThis past week was very busy around the

base because we had five outreach teams return back from the nations. The January DTS cleared out and spent the week at the YWAM base in Matamata (a town just over the mountain). All of the October school students and staff returned and spent the week doing their debrief leading up to graduation on Thursday evening. Graduation is always such a special time as we reflect and celebrate what God has done over outreach and the entire DTS. The teams added up that during the seven weeks of outreach, 97 people accepted Jesus. This includes nations such as New Zealand, India, Vanuatu and places in the Middle East.

Part of my role at the base includes helping with graduation. Prep starts pretty early with

Emily with other YWAM leaderscutting lots of cake, preparing ice cream top-pings, baking cookies, and setting up chairs for the ceremony. Graduation begins with worship and then we begin to hear outreach reports from all of the different teams. Then the students receive their certificates and we all celebrate some more with dessert. It’s a long night but it’s worth it.

This graduation was special because some of the outreach leaders were students during the first school that I was around on staff. We were remembering two years back when they were just finishing their own DTS.

The Wider YWAM CommunityHere in Tauranga we have a few different

expressions of YWAM and for the past couple of years my heart has always been to see us

Armand and Jean LeBlancMarch 5, 2018(The LeBlancs are celebrating 41 years serving the Lord on three continents. Most of this was in the area of Ankara, Iran. They’re now officially “Emeritus Retired Status” and remain on staff with Christar.)

“Where are you from?” Armand asked the guy at the Subway sandwich shop near our house in Greensboro. Danesh explained that he was from Iran. A few weeks later we found out that he had been in the same city we were living in overseas—only he came to the U.S. before we moved here. He was thrilled to talk to someone who knows his language. He is not a believer, so pray for us to be a witness to him and that God would draw him to Himself.

Also, a recent blessing was being a part of kicking off a missions weekend at one of our home supporting churches. It was so wonderful to see the passion for the Lord and the desire to see Him worshiped all around the world. We have a few contacts that we will be following up with to help them see possible next steps in pursuing missions. Please pray.

We have been busy getting our house set up in North Carolina and arranging for and visiting supporting churches. This Friday we leave for a 10 day trip to Florida where we will be participating in a missions conference in one of our churches and sharing the next Sunday in another. Then a special treat will be visiting a Farsi fellowship as well. We hope to see some individual supporters and a couple of Iranian families along the way. Thank you for your prayers!

It was such a delight to have all of our chil-dren and grandchildren here for Christmas. Some of them had not been here for several years. We used to do our furlough (home assignment) times here when they were all little. Jean still has a lot of family in this area.

come together more often as a YWAM Tau-ranga family. One way this can happen is on Monday nights. There is a YWAM base about 20 minutes away who always opens up their doors for Community Night every Monday. I have so enjoyed taking groups of our students there each week. It is such an encouragement to my heart seeing the students from the dif-ferent bases excited about seeing each other and building friendships.

What About Vanuatu? This is a question that I occasionally hear

from people, curious because I’m living back in New Zealand. The short answer is that I still plan on going back at some stage and I still dream of starting some type of house of prayer there. However, visa and immigration situations make things a bit complicated. I still hold a Religious Workers Visa in New Zealand and, while on this visa, I can only spend a couple months out of the country each year. I need to honor this visa while I have it, not just for my own sake of being able to get visas in the future but also for the sake of YWAM NZ. When immigration grants visas to foreigners, they want the visas to be used, fair enough. My visa runs out this coming September, so for the most part I will be living here and potentially include a couple of ministry trips. I still stay in contact with various people and pastors in Vanuatu and continue to develop a vision for this prayer initiative. I would appreciate your prayers as I continue to steward all these things with Vanuatu while I live in New Zealand.

Thank You and Prayer RequestsAs always, a huge thank you to each and

every one of you for your prayers, support and encouragement. I can’t do this without you all.

I would appreciate your prayers as I continue to seek God for timing and His will in a few different opportunities I have. Pray that I have a fresh desire to study the Word and seek the Lord. Pray that I would be walking in love, patience and grace.

Please pray for:• Danesh and his wife to come to the Lord.• Safety in travel this next week and that we

will be a blessing to the people we visit.• Us as we plan our trips and travel these next

couple of months.• Wisdom for our future ministry opportu-

nities.

Bernie and Sherry PierceMarch 7, 2018(Serving in Lincoln, Nebraska with Christar.)

New Life!Months ago a Muslim gal came to Lincoln to

stay with teammates to go to school here, con-nected through another friend. In February this gal prayed to trust Christ as her Savior, but sadly (for us all), days later she found herself back on a plane to return to her Muslim family on the West coast. Please pray with us for her spiritual protection and growth. Still, we Rejoice!

Being ConnectorsLast year Bernie befriended a new Ameri-

can/Mexican couple at our English church and we attended a couple of their children’s birthday parties. One of their daughter’s friends is a gal, “Flower,” whose parents are closely tied with our friends and the Arab church. However, there has been a shift in attitudes since getting into middle school and dealing with some painful family dynamics. This family thought about asking “Flower” to come to English church with them and asked our opinion. We were thrilled and told them to go for it. “Flower” has come for the last two Sundays. Please pray that she would truly blossom and come back to Christ.

Marriage in TroubleWe’ve asked you to pray for a Yazidi friend

that Sherry and Timothy visit. During the last visit she confessed that her marriage is in danger. Sherry prayed at the end of her visit and named some things specifically, which

“Stacy” hadn’t mentioned, and Stacy said after-wards that everything prayed for was “spot on.” Friends, thank you for praying for wisdom and discernment for us. This is a case in point of why. Please pray that this gal, with all the turmoil in her life, would eventually desire to trust Christ, and in the interim, that God would hold their marriage together.

Praises:1. Friends like you praying and giving to

Christar.2. We had a fun baby shower for a Muslim

lady married to an American Christian. She seemed to appreciate it greatly and His Word was shared.

Bernie and Sherry Pierce3. Joshua’s science fair partner spent lots of

time with us in February. We were able to get to know his mom (who has MS) and, in doing so, were able to share Christ some. Joshua has since recruited him for Scouts and he’s thinking to invite him to church. He prayed last night that it would be a stepping stone to knowing God.

4. We were delighted to have a weekend visit from our dear friend and former team-mate from France, “Aunt Alice.” We marvel at

Emily and Bryan GerlachMarch 21, 2018(Serving in Thailand with TEAM Global Missions)

We Are Having a Baby Girl!March is flying by and with it comes the hot

weather and smoke in Chiang Mai. But with it also comes some big news: Emily is pregnant with our second and the doctor is pretty sure that it’s a little girl. How exciting! She hasn’t slowed down though and continues to meet with girls at the juvenile center each week along with teaching Sunday school at church and reaching out to our neighbors.

Jameson turned two on March 13 and had a great party. He is not quite sure if he wants a baby sister, but we still have time before she arrives in September.

We really need your prayers as we prepare to expand our family. Situations like this remind us how hard it can be to live far from family.

how God knits lives together and that the boys can have a special connection and a current relationship from our “former lives.” What a blessing to sing and play Arabic praise music together as well!

4. God knows our needs and we’re never outside His care.

Requests:1. Joshua has a tooth extraction tomor-

row morning (Thursday). All his experiences in France were traumatizing, so would you please pray for God’s peace tomorrow instead of anxiety and for it to go smoothly?

2. Continue to pray for wisdom and dis-cernment, so we can boldly proclaim when and where He leads us.

3. It has been a weary month with another round of strep, colds, etc. Please pray for good rest and good health. We can’t make home visits when we or the kids are sick.

4. Another Yazidi friend is mostly home and depressed. We would like to visit her soon. Pray for ease in communication and that we could be an encouragement.

5. We really need God’s wisdom for school-ing next year, especially for Joshua (complicated scenario). Please pray that God would give clarity, and if necessary, provisions.

Update on Bryan’s Work at the Family Connection Foundation

Every few months we are going to write a little highlight of the work that one of us is doing. You are our partner in this ministry and having more details about our work here will enable you to effectively partner with us and pray for us. So, here is an update from Bryan about his work with the Family Connection Foundation (FCF).

Well, the CEO resigned in November and moved back to the United States. Needless to say, that caused a bit of turmoil in the FCF office. But maybe I need to back up a step first and fill you in on what exactly FCF is. The Family Connection Foundation is a Christian, social, non-profit foundation in Thailand. It was started in 2006 out of the vision of a local pastor who was leading an international church in Chiang Mai. He accepted the position of head pastor on the condition that the church would be missions minded, and out of that vision sprang FCF. There are currently 16

Page 23: Memory Care Workshop New Wednesday Night Bible Study ... · against you. Would you please forgive me? You died to pay the price for my sin because I couldn’t pay that big of a price

23

individual projects in FCF (with a few more in the works), with over 80 foreign volunteers and close to 80 Thai staff members working in those projects. FCF’s purpose is to seek out and empower like-minded missions organizations and independent projects to share the Gospel with Thai people. This happens through a full range of administrative services and ministry oversight tools that keep ministries running lean and effective on the field.

This is where I come in. Over the last eight months since beginning work in the FCF administrative office, I have changed roles and responsibilities many times to try to help fill the holes that were left when the CEO transitioned out. Currently, I oversee all projects joining and leaving FCF, head-up the in-house IT Team and

This is some of the leadership at our church. Bryan will be returning to PA for a week to host Pastor Ogaat (sitting next to Bryan) and his wife

Khru Taay (next to him) in May.

generally have my hands full with various other administrative tasks. I am sometimes referred to as the “general project problem solver” and I help track down answers to any questions that the project leaders might bring to FCF.

That’s all well and good, but the most important thing to me in this role is a heart of service. I want to help shape the culture of FCF, both within the administration office and with how we relate to the projects. The volunteers and staff that work with FCF are all so passionate about what they are doing, and what they are doing is so important, be it human trafficking prevention and interven-tion, running a children’s home, sharing Christ

through a community center, outreach in the red-light district, Bible training or education in city slum areas. I work to make sure that all these projects can run effectively and efficiently so that they can focus on their relationships and ministries.

The newest project that has joined FCF is called Friends of the City and is located in Bangkok, the first one for FCF there! I had the opportunity to help bring them on board by walking them through the application process and ensuring that they have the training and resources necessary to succeed. Friends of the City works in 15 slum communities in the heart of Bangkok where wealth and poverty meet. Their goal is to make life better for the urban poor through holistic education and they seek to incorporate God’s story into everything they do. They partner with the local Thai churches in the area and help them realize their own goals for ministry and they are having a great impact. This is just one of the many projects that is doing amazing work in Thailand and you are a part of that work. Through the work of the FCF projects, we are able to see that happen every day in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and in Northeastern Thailand (Isaan).

Prayers:• Healthy baby and pregnancy.• Relationship with our neighbor would grow

and God would work in her life. • Our Thai pastor and his wife are in the U.S.

for several months meeting with churches.• The girls at the juvenile center that Emily

visits would know the Lord.Praises:

• Emily has had great opportunities to have meaningful interactions with our neighbor.

• We had friends visit; it was a great encour-agement!

• Bryan is continuing to have opportunities to serve through work and church.

• So far mom and baby are healthy and doing great!
