Outreach Report for April 2017 Memo Submitted by Kay Ham, Program Consultant

Community Engagement:

1. Two events in early May provided great networking opportunities with various organizations in North York and Scarborough: “Walking Forward Together in Catholic Education,” on May 3, 2017 at the Catholic Education Centre, helped promote our program through Parenting and Family Literacy Centres (located in 19 TCDSB schools). “Hong Fook – Celebration of Community Partnership”, hosted by Hong Fook Mental Health Association on May 5, 2017. This event enabled promotion of our program with several ethnic, community and religious organizations in North York.

2. “Proudly Pinoy” is a pan-GTA Filipino celebration as part of Asian Heritage Month. This event, held at Dante

Alighieri Academy on May 13, 2017, drew over 500 adults and children. Our program was promoted at the event through distribution of program directories and flyers, answering enquiries and making an announcement at the workshop for parents.

3. “Toronto Newcomer Day” was a big success with over 1000 visitors! It was held at Nathan Philips Square on Monday, May 15, 2017. Big thanks to Almas Ghorbani, Gehan Guriguis, Lucia Zhang and Naomi Paramanantham, who assisted with program promotion at the event. Many thanks also to those instructors who brought their learners to the event. An instructor shared with Kay that it was so wonderful to see many people in the square with our red visors on. The weather was very cooperative with our promotion efforts, too. Two pictures were posted in our Instagram page.

Tips for Classroom Instructors Featured Resources of the Month Submitted by Justine Jun, Resources Consultant Follow-up Questions (from last month’s featured resources): Please contact me ([email protected] or 416-397-6071) to share your feedback on the resources listed in last month’s monthly memo.

If you used either of the two CLB 5-6 Open Educational Resources listed in the April Monthly Memo (titled In the Workplace, and In the Community), how did you like them? Did you have any trouble downloading the FREE worksheets and handouts from the website?

Featured Theme: Workplace English In section 15 of our Staff Binder, there is a detailed listing of instructional resources, including those related to “ESL/Workplace Preparation” on page 123. Contact me to let me know how useful this listing is, or if you would like to review or test out any of our new resources. The following include a newly-added resource, and reminders of three older resources that are still relevant to Workplace English:

International Express (Intermediate), Student Book (2014 edition) with Pocket Book and DVD-ROM: Oxford University Press (CLB 4-6): This student text includes both classroom exercises and self-study material (workplace phrases, classroom language, grammar terms and irregular verbs). It covers a range of grammar points, including present perfect, modals, past perfect, conditionals, and relative clauses. In each unit, there are four sections: Grammar, Vocabulary, Work Skills, and Functions. Each unit ends with a review. I especially recommend the Work Skills and Functions sections, which include writing a professional profile, emails, meetings, presentations, Job interviews, teleconferencing, networking, giving advice, reaching agreement, and checking understanding. Overall, the content in this text is authentic and current. International Express is also available at other levels from beginner to upper-intermediate.

English for Sales & Purchasing: This book is part of the Oxford Business English series, along with English for Customer Care. The topics include job titles and tasks, requisitions, relationship building, follow-up emails, sales pitches, offer letters, negotiations, contract terms, telephone orders, and dealing with problems (on the phone and in writing). The tasks can be used for role plays and group presentations.

ESL for Career Studies (CLB 5+): The TCDSB Adult Education Program compiled this short booklet in 2010. It lists possible topics and activity suggestions for teaching career exploration, workplace language, and employment search. Although many of its URL links are no longer working, it includes useful activity suggestions, resources, and needs assessment tools.

Canada Works: Workplace Training & Services: This book, produced by the TDSB some time ago, includes content

that is still useful. It’s five units include: Working in Canada, Organizational Culture, Rules, Policies and Procedures,

Workplace Tools for Doing Business. The unit on computers is less useful because of its dated content. The text comes

with the following workbooks: Workbook 1-Assess your skills; Workbook 2-A day on the job; Workbook 3-Guide to

Workforce Literacy; A Practitioner Guide to Workbooks 1 and 2; Guide to Blended Learning

AE Nursery Program

RECIPE FOR HOME MADE CLAY Submitted by Naomi Paramanantham, Nursery Program Consultant

What you need:

1 cup baking soda ½ cup cornstarch Warm water Measuring cups Pan Food coloring Cutting board Large spoon or whisk

What You Do:

1. Measure out 1 cup of baking soda and a ½ cup of cornstarch and mix them together in a pan.

2. Slowly add up to 2/3 cup of warm water as you gently stir the mixture until it is smooth.

3. Place the pan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. When the mixture reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes, pour it directly onto a cutting board to cool.

4. While the dough cools, select the colours to use.

5. When the dough is cool, knead it until it feels elastic, like Play-Doh.

6. Time to add colour! Add drops of food coloring and knead to blend.

7. Provide children with clay and encourage them to play, creating different shapes. To keep the shapes intact, let them dry and harden on newspaper overnight.
