Kosmopolis is a biennial literary encounter that is as old as the new century. It has been conceived as a laboratory-cum-fiesta, a space open to all genres and literatures with a work programme to be developed over the coming years. The project is a natural consequence of the Cities and Their Writers exhibition cycle begun at the CCCB in 1995.
Kosmopolis is a pluralist event which condenses and amplifies the emotion, pleasure and knowledge that the incessant search for meaning leads to, the mutations we are present at in our way of creating worlds, the creative energy and critical hope necessary to glimpsing new territories of sensibility.

To conceive literature as the (only?) Discourse that does not seek to model a world of absolute foundations,
disciplinary boundaries or ideological straitjackets.
To encourage non-conditioned readings of the wes-tern canon that will reappraise without prejudices or exclusi-
ve categories the major texts and authors of literary history.
To foment the progressive emergence of an evolving canon capable of changing in response to different rea-
ders and generations.
To contribute to the preservation of oral literatures as part of humanity’s shared cultural heritage.
To make a place for all literatures and genres, with a special focus on those that have historically been
neglected or undervalued.
To promote the visionary, experimental and ludic tradition in literature.
To address the transformation of written culture by means of approaches and methodologies that afford a basis
for reflection on the different supports through which this
has been transmitted, from the papyrus to the digital book.
To facilitate “contamination” between disciplines and interaction between writers, visual artists, film direc-
tors, musicians, actors, architects, designers, scientifics
and other key protagonists of the new cultural scene.
To activate the participation of the public in the co-creation of an international event that seeks to contribute
to the culture of creativity, of mutual understanding, of
dialogue and of peace.

2004 edition
In its second edition, Kosmopolis (KO4) took a new step towards its consolidation as an event that places literature on
the centre stage, in interaction with the arts and the sciences; a
next-generation festival aimed at reviewing the diverse formats
that can be used to present literature to the public.
New spaces were incorporated as a part of K04, such as the
Kosmopolis Patio, designed for the exchange of short stori-es, tales, poems, books, ideas, etc. A meeting point to imagine
and share new initiatives and tendencies from the cross-cultu-
ral and cosmopolitan city. With the special collaboration of the
Pachamama Foundation (Bolivia), members of BookCrossing
and of ANIN.
The Kosmopolis Patio also proposed reserved spaces for spon-
taneous poets, writers and artists: Speaker’s corner, where
they could read their texts, poems, proclamations or manifestos;
and the Word Wall Web, where each visitor left his or her
written mark on what turned out to be a great mural of collective
literary creation.

Alongside the activities programmes during K04, the public
could also visit the following exhibitions / installations:
The world of Gao. A look at the many-sided oeuvre of Gao Xingjian
A small-format exhibition devoted to the creative world of Gao
Xingjian, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (2000). The
show attempts to reflect the varying registers of a novelist,
painter, poet, essayist and playwright resistant to fashion and
classification.
Julio cortázar. Travels, images and other territorie
The aim of this exhibition is to penetrate into the personal and
literary world of Julio Cortázar via his travels, his letters and his
incursions into photography and film, disciplines the author of
Hopscotch gave special importance to, comparing them to the
short story and the novel.
Hyperiment. The hypertext brought into play
An experimental space which brings the different conceptions,
genealogies, dilemmas, treatments and promises of the Hyper-
text as a cognitive and creative tool into play. It can be visited as
a hybrid environment inspired by the changes that classrooms,
laboratories and libraries (as spaces for learning and research)
and the mutations of public places devoted to intelligent leisure
are undergoing.

The comprehension of the project and sensitivity shown by more
than 160 writers and artists1 who took part in K04, enriched the
complexity of the formats through which they displayed their
reflections and work to the public. Yet again, Kosmopolis reflec-
ted its international character by favouring dialogue, networks
and contacts between authors of different disciplines and lite-
ratures.

The three main themes of this edition were the printed word,
the spoken word and the electronic word. Their corresponding
codes and the connections between them converged in a single
space, Kosmopolis, allowing them to be contaminated by the
arts and sciences, and presented before the public with greater
richness and complexity.

Sponsorship and collaboration
This second edition of Kosmopolis was made possible thanks
to the valuable collaboration received from individuals, groups,
institutions and companies; the exchange network created with
them was essential to the success of the project.
External financing
In this edition, some collaborating organisations such as the
Zaragoza City Council and the House of America, not only
participated in the financing but also in the project’s extension
around the national territory. After Kosmopolis was held,
these organisations then hosted in their own cities the literary
activity of Café Europa – La Habana and the meeting of
professionals from reading clubs in Portugal.

broadcast live from the festival; as well as significant coverage

literature from an inter-disciplinary, experimental and recreati-
onal viewpoint.
