Musik friin Albertus Pictors tid 1509 gick en av Sveriges storsta milare, Albertus Pictor, ur tiden. P i kyrkovaggar oeh i kyrkovalv har han berattat om Bibelns historier och om de stora livsfrigorna genom sin konst. Samma teman inspirerade ditidens kompositorer att beriira oss med musikaliska bedttelser om j u n g h Maria, om Kristi liv och om k'drleken* doden, smWan och gladjen i medeltidens och renassansens Eu- ropa.

Den medeltida miimiskan strwade stlndigt efter att fdrsiikra sig om en plats i himmelen ge- nom biiner och goda ggrningar. Framfiir allt vande man sig till jnngfiu Maria fdr att be om hennes fdrboner. Ovanfdr Albertus Pictors sjalvporkiitt i Lids kyrka, ddr han framfaller sig sjalv som en moderiktig man i sina basta fir, har han till och rned skrivit Memento mei Alberto pictor huius ecclesie - "Minns mig Albertus, denna kyrkas milare". Ett annat centralt tema, framfdr allt i konsten, var referenser till de gammaltestamentliga berat- telser som fdrebfidar - fdrutsiiger - handelser i det nya testametet. Att Jesu liv fdntspitts av profe- terna var ett avgiirande argument fdr att han verk- ligen var Messias, den smorde. Vi har Iitit Albertus Pictors konst inspirera oss

Maria-singer blandas med sival lovshger over den uppstindne Kristus som den dramatiska berattelsen om ropet i Rama, Rake1 som hegriter sina barn - fdrebidandet av kung Herodes dodande av gossebarnen i Betlehem. Och precis som Albertus liter vaxtsliigor och djur in- rama sina motiv, liter vi en gronskande f"agels8ng representera den medeltida - och alImBnmanskli- ga - fascinationen fdr livets iterkomst varje vir.

Albertus Pictor Albertus Ymmenhusen, Albrekt Milare eller Al- brekt Piirlstickare (ca 144&1509) kom ftin en liten stad i mellersta Tyskland, Immenhausen, efter vilken han ocksi tagit ett av sina tillnamn. I bevarade svenska kallor dyker ban fdrst upp som borgare i Arboga 1465, i Stockholm omtalas ban fdrsta gingen 1473. Detta h gifte han sig med Jo- han Malares tinka Anna och loste ut deras barns arvslott i det stenhus vid Norreport som Anna medfdrde i boet. I Stockholms handlingar for de fdljande decenniema kallas ban omsom milare, omsom pitrlstickate (dv.s. brodor) - han bedrev alltsi tvi yrken, uppenbarligen med stor ftamging att Coma av huwdstadens skattelangder.

1507 uppges att "han pi sangen ligger stadse" oeh miste fdretriidas av sin hnstm Anna i en ratts- sak. Bildema kompletteras med sprikband p i latin som fungerar som bildtexter eller pratbubblor i en tecknad serie. Sprikbanden hjalper ocksi till att binda samman bildens mhga dimensioner; samma bild visar inte sallan berattelsens biirjan, dramatiska hijjdpunkt och slut p i samma ghg .

Albertus kyrkom5lningar anviindes f6r att un- dervisa firsamlingen om Bibelns hisbrier och som stad fbr s e d e l h d e predikningar. Datidens kyrkobesokare skulle verkligen ha t in t igen sig i bilderna eftersom man portratterade aven bibliska och historiska personer i fdr tiden typiska kllder. Detta var praxis under hela medeltiden, aven om vissa symbolplagg anvandes, siisom Marias bli mantel.

Frodig berlttarglldje och hog teknisk kvalitet Tillsammans med sin verkstad har Albertus Pictor milat ett 30-tal kyrkor i huvudsak i Malardalen, sivitt vi nu vet. Den milade ytan i kyrkor som Harkeberga eller Taby, vilka hyser tvi av bans b i t bevarade miil- ningssviter, ar ca 600 kvadratmeter. De milningar som utf'drts av Albertus Pictors verkstad k t e t e c k - nas av en frodig berattargladje i kombination med en for svenska mitt oerhort hog teknisk kvalitet. Al- bertus livsverk - som ocksi omfattar ett ok;int antal figurbroderade skrudar- utmtirker sig fdr en overval- digande kvantitet och en imponerande kvalitet. Den kombinationen gor Albertus Pictortill en av de storsta i svensk konsthistoria.

Music from the time of Albertus Pictor In 1509 one of the greatest Swedish painters, Al- bertus Pictor, passed away. On church walls and church ceilings, he has told the stories of the Bible and of the eternal questions of life through his art. The same themes also inspired the composers of the time to move us with musical stories of the Virgin Mary, the life of Christ and of love, death, pain and joy in medieval and renaissance Europe.

Medieval man constantly strived to ensure his place in heaven through prayers and good deeds. Most of all, he turned to the Virgin Mary to pray for her intercession. Above ~lbe-rtus ~ictor'sseif portrait in the church of Lid, where he paints him- self as a fashion concious man in his prime, he has even written Memento mei Alberto pictor huius ecclesie - "Remember me, Albertus, painter of this church". He was probably hoping to be remembered by both congregation and divinity. Josquin des Prez expresses the same wish in Ave Maria ... vivgo sertzna: 0 Mater Dei! Memento mei! -"O mother of God! Remember me!" (see picture on p. 4).

Another central theme, especially in art, was references to the stories from the Old Testament that prefigures - predicts - events in the New Tes- tament. That the life of Christ had been predicted by the prophets was a decisive argument for Him being Messiah, the anointed.

We have let the art ofAlbertus Pictor inspire us to a musical story that brings us on a journey into the world of sight and sound that could surround the congregation in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Songs of Mary is mixed with praise for

the risen Jesus as well as the dramatic story of the cry in Ramah, Rachel crying for her children - the prefigurement of Ki ng Herod's killing of the chil- dren of Bethlehem. And just as Albertus lets floral ornaments surround his motifs, we let a flowering birdsong represent the medieval - and human - fascination for the return of life every spring.

Albertus Pictor Albertus Ymmenhusen, Albrekt Milare or Al- brekt P&lstickare (about 144&1509), a native of a small town called Immenhausen in Central Ger- many, is known from Swedish historical sources since 1465 when he was admitted a burgher of Arboga. Eight years later he moved to Stockholm where he, according to ancient custom, took over the workshop and the widow of a deceased paint- er. Mentioned during the following decades in the t o m records both as a painter and as an embroi- derer, AIbertus Pictor was reponsible for the mas- terly decorating of the vaults and walls of over thirty churches in the Malar region, for a third of which his personal signatures have been directly or indirectly transmitted to our time.

In the last year of his life, he is also known to have played the organ during a mass for the dead in the Church of St. Nicolas (now Storkyrkan) in Stockholm.

Good conquering evil Most of the motifs are biblical, but also more worldly motifs are present, such as witchcraft and ballad heroes. But the common theme for all the motifs is good conquering evil. Albertus Pictor often used the illustrated Biblia Pauperum, the so called Poor Man's Bible, as an inspiration.

The images are complemented by scrolls of text working as a caption or a speach balloon in a car- toon. The scrolls also help to tie the many diien- sions of the image together; it is not uncommon for the same image to show the beginning, the climax and the end of the story at the same time,

The church murals were used to teach the con- gregation about the Bible and to support moral preachings. The church visitors of the time would have been able to see themselves in the images, as even biblical and historical persons were pictured in clothes that were typical for the time. This was the custom for the period, even if certain articles of clothing were given symbolical value, such as the blue mantle of the Virgin Mary.

Three dimensional impression Albertus Pictor is set apart from his contempora- ries in Sweden by his vibrant and agile expression in the paintings. Different shadows have been used to create three dimensional impressions, which is especially evident in faces, where ligh- ter areas have been added to model the shape of foreheads, chins andnoses. Also glazes in various nuances have been used to create volume, for ex- ample in the folds of the garments.

The churches were probably painted shortly after the creation of the vaults, so that the painters could use the scaffolding for their work. The images and motifs were sketched in charcoal on the plaster. The images were coloured and then scrolls oftext, ornaments and stencils were painted.

Lush narrative zest and high technical quality As far as we know, Albertus Pictor has, together with his workshop, painted more than 30 church- es, mainly in the provinces around Lake Malaren.

The painted surfaces in churches such as Harke- berga or Tgby, which are two of the best preserved of his works, are around 600 square meters. The paintings &om Albertus Pictors workshop are characterized by a lush narrative zest in com- bination with an immense technical quality by Swedish standards. His life works - which also includes an unknown number of embroidered vestments - stands out for its overwhelming quantity and an impressive quality. This combim- tion makes Albertus Pictor one of the greatest in Swedish art history.

A Capella Holmiensis grundades 1994 i Stockholm och sjunger musik ft3n medeltiden och renassansen. Kvartetten ar- betar i forsta hand med egna produktioner, sisom konsertserien "Musica Pictoris" som genoln- fordes under Albertus Pictors jubileumsir 2009. Gmppen har ocksi medverkat i exempelvis Med- eltidsveckan p i Gotland, Gamla stans ievande julkalender, tv-produktioner och en ling rad pri- vata evenemang p i slott, museer och i medeltida kalla~alv.

A Capella Holmiensis was founded in 1994 in Stockholm and sings music from the middle ages and the renaissance. The quartet primarily produces their own concerts, such as the concert series "Musica Pictoris" during the Albertus Pictor jubilee 2009. The group has also participated in, for example, the medieval week on Gotland, the live advent calendar in Stockholm's Old Town, TV produc- tions and many private events at castles, museums and medieval vaults.

The repertoire includes works from the early middle ages to about 1600, such as Messe deNos- tre Dame by Guillaume de Machaut, works from Cancionero de Palacio, Cancionero de Upsala, Cantigas de Santa Maria and Carmina Burana, and also music by among others Giovami da Pal- estrina, Josquin des Prez and Francesco Landini.
